Dame Barbara Windsor’s widower Scott Mitchell has taken on a new role as he continues his campaign in the fight against dementia.

Barbara, known for her portrayal of Peggy Mitchell in the BBC soap EastEnders, died in 2020 at the age of 83 from Alzheimer’s disease.

Scott, 61, will become the people’s champion of the Dame Barbara Windsor Dementia Mission.

He said: “I will never cease to be proud of the courage, dignity and generosity that Barbara showed in her efforts to raise awareness of Alzheimer’s for as long as possible, whilst dealing with her own illness.

‘She gave a voice to millions of people affected by this terrible disease and we are told her statement changed the entire conversation around dementia.

‘I know how proud she would have been when, almost two years ago, we launched the Dame Barbara Windsor Dementia Mission in her memory… but until we find a cure, there is still so much more for us to do.’

Experts predict that the number of people with dementia in Britain will increase from the current figure of 944,000 to well over a million by 2025.

WHAT IS DEMENTIA?

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of neurological conditions

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of neurological conditions

A GLOBAL CARE

Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a range of progressive neurological conditions (affecting the brain) that affect memory, thinking and behavior.

There are many forms of dementia, of which Alzheimer’s disease is the most common.

Some people may have a combination of different forms of dementia.

Regardless of which type is diagnosed, each person will experience dementia in their own unique way.

Dementia is a global problem, but it is most common in wealthier countries, where people are likely to live to a very old age.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED?

The Alzheimer’s Society reports that there are currently more than 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK. This number is expected to rise to 1.6 million by 2040.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting between 50 and 75 percent of those diagnosed.

There are an estimated 5.5 million people in the US with Alzheimer’s disease. A similar percentage increase is expected in the coming years.

As a person’s age increases, so does the risk that he or she will develop dementia.

The number of diagnoses is increasing, but it is believed that many people with dementia are still undiagnosed.

IS THERE A TREATMENT?

There is currently no medicine against dementia.

But new medications can slow its progression and the sooner it is caught, the more effective treatments can be.

Since Barbara’s death, Scott has moved on with ‘amazing’ fellow EastEnders actress Tanya Franks, who played Rainie Cross in the soap.

The couple had developed a close friendship over the years while working with the charity and Bab’s Army.

Scott told Kaye Adams about her How to Turn 60 podcast he is “very happy” in his new relationship with Tanya, 56, someone who is “very understanding.”

He said: “She is a wonderful lady who knew Barbara. It can’t be easy being with someone who was the other half of Barbara Windsor, especially since I still put myself out there and talk about her.

“So it says to me about the type of person Tanya is that she can handle that. She is very sure of herself as a person. Just because you’re not with someone for whatever reason doesn’t mean you’re just turning off a valve of love.’

Scott was Barbara’s third husband and they married in 2000.

‘I felt smart for the first time, but I also started to enjoy the appetite suppressant side effect of the drugs. I saw a way to banish the clumsy teenager in favor of a flighty fairy.”

She said that “the onset of rapid weight loss” led to a feeling of “unhealthy elation.”

She said she weighed 84 pounds in the spring of 2022 and faced significant health complications as a result.

“We are going through this as a strong family unit and wanted to include his fans because we know how much he means to you, just as you mean to him. As Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that.”

Barbara Windsor’s widower Scott Mitchell and his new partner Tanya Franks spoke about their romance on Monday’s episode of Lorraine.

In the wake of losing his wife of 20 years in December 202083 years old, after a seven-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Scott, 61, explained how his “incredible friendship” with Tanya, 56, turned into a romance.

Speaking to presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard, he said: ‘We have built an incredible friendship over the last four years and something wonderful has come from it…

‘The exact opposite of what dementia is. I’m lucky that I have a partner who doesn’t mind me talking about my late wife.’

Scott and Tanya have built a close friendship over the years while working together to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease with “Bab’s Army.”

Alzheimer’s disease is close to Tanya’s heart as she takes part in the London Marathon as part of Bab’s Army for her stepdad Derek.

Tanya, who knew EastEnders star Barbara and played drug-addicted prostitute Rainie Cross in the soap, admitted she could do ‘nothing but support Scott’ when discussing Barbara’s struggles and his work caring for the TV icon.

Tanya said: ‘There’s nothing I can do but support him by talking about it. You often feel alone when you care for someone with Alzheimer’s…

“The communication allowed the support system to grow. Barbara is as much about the legacy of Alzheimer’s as it is about me and my stepfather. It is hundreds of thousands that we have raised by doing the three marathons.’

Scott reiterated: ‘If anyone wants to give a million pounds for next year’s marathon, a big company or a big sponsor, I will do another marathon and shave my hair off too, and that’s the big one, shaving my hair off.’

“I don’t want people to go through the final stages of what I went through with Barbara.”

In January, Scott described Tanya as “amazing” because she “understands” that Barbara will “always have a place in my heart.”

Scott told Kaye Adams about her How to Turn 60 podcast he is “very happy” in his new relationship, with someone who is “very understanding.”

Before her relationship with Scott, Tanya was married to fellow actor James Barriscale, with whom she founded the film and theater production company Stock-pot Productions.

He played Jonathan Malnet, Jade Green’s adoptive father in the soap. Scott said his love for Barbara will always have a place in his heart.

He said, ‘Maybe I turn on the TV and suddenly she’s there and it takes my breath away sometimes because I don’t expect it.’

Scott said he began mourning Barbara on the day of her diagnosis and believes the actress would have given him and Tanya her blessing.

Emma Heming Willis opens up about the sensitive topic of women’s brain health, amid her husband Bruce Willis’ battle with dementia.

Emma, 45, who has been married to 68-year-old Willis since 2009, started wellness brain health brand Make Time in 2020.

She co-founded the brand with Helen Christoni and became curious about the topic of women’s brain health after her nine-year-old daughter Evelyn was born in 2014.

Heming Willis — who shared a sweet Valentine’s Day post with her husband two weeks ago — talked about her brand’s mission in an interview with People.

“My doctor will talk to me about the health of my breasts, my cholesterol, my heart, but not my brain,” Heming Willis said, adding, “I had never heard the term ‘brain health’ before.”

She co-founded the brand with Helen Christoni (right) and became curious about the topic of women’s brain health after her nine-year-old daughter Evelyn was born in 2014.

She admitted to experiencing brain fog after Evelyn was born, although her doctor dismissed it as what’s called “mommy brain.”

Heming Willis eventually sought out a specialist and the “fog” finally lifted thanks to a “handful” of daily supplement pills, starting her new mission.

She teamed up with her friend and business partner Christoni, 53, to create Make Time, described as a “wellness brand and movement to raise awareness of the importance of brain health,” especially for women.

Both women have experience dealing with brain health issues, with Heming Willis announcing that her action star husband Bruce Willis was diagnosed with ‘Frontotemporal dementia’.

Christoni lost her grandmother and mother-in-law to dementia, and her own daughter last year to mental health problems.

“All families are affected by this. We found ourselves in this position, with this mission. Your purpose finds you,” Christoni said.

The Making Time mission can be as simple as a quick adventure with friends, where the partners recently tried yoga with baby goats.

“I’ve been able to take advantage of this new community I’m in, so giving back to people who are on this journey as care partners has been super meaningful. Community is everything,” she said.

The brand includes a podcast and a Make Time Wellness product line of “brain-nourishing” vitamins and drinkable supplements.

No one talked to women about their brains. It was a very male-dominated conversation. I thought, ‘Let’s do it,'” Christoni said.

Heming Willis previously emphasized the importance of educating women about brain health,’not just when you get a diagnosis and it’s too late.’

“Brain health can happen at any point in our journey. We’re really just trying to empower women to think about it,” she added.

A portion of each sale is donated to Hilarity for Charity, a nonprofit organization that cares for families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

Wendy Williams’ son confirmed that his mother is suffering from alcohol-induced dementia for the very first time during Sunday night’s Lifetime documentary ‘Where is Wendy Williams?’

Kevin Hunter Jr., 23, revealed doctors have told him that alcohol had begun to affect ‘her headspace and her brain.’

‘I was able to really learn more about things going on with my mother internally. They basically said that because she was drinking so much, it was starting to affect her headspace and her brain. So, I think they said it was alcohol-induced dementia.’

The diagnosis by doctors goes some way in explaining Williams’ often unsociable and erratic behavior which, in the intrusive new documentary, has showcased her burping, sleeping the day away in bed with bottles of alcohol by her side and lashing out at over the slightest transgressions.

Williams was first told of her alcohol-related brain damage diagnosis years earlier in 2019 during her time at a rehab center in Delray Beach although her care team have said her’ dementia diagnosis only happened in 2023.

Williams’ care team stated the dementia diagnosis occurred in 2023 with the news only being made public last week, just before the documentary aired

Williams’ niece Alex Finnie also revealed she was told of her aunts diagnosis in fall 2022.

‘All I know is that it was dementia. You look back at little things, and it’s a slow roll. It’s little things like, “When’s your birthday again?’ You know? ‘What’s his name again?” -But after seeing my aunt and really spending time with her in a state where she’s in right now, I quickly realized that things were just not normal. It’s heartbreaking.

‘When it’s come to my aunt’s dementia, there are three things that didn’t help her: divorce, the pandemic and then losing my grandmother,’ Alex explains.

In one of the more shocking incidents of the documentary, which details her struggles with alcohol abuse and mental health in recent years, Williams could be dining out with her publicist Shawn Zanotti.

Eating at a restaurant overlooking Los Angeles, Williams could be seen consuming several glasses of vodka with her lunch, before openly burping out loud, on camera.

Following her lunch, Williams and Zanotti head to Universal Studios in Los Angeles to pitch a new talk show as part of the star’s ‘bounce back’.

NBC Universal declined to comment on her meeting with the producers.

Williams seemingly loses all sense of where she is as she can be heard stressing how she doesn’t want the show to be filmed ‘here in Miami’ – despite her being in LA.

When asked by producers if there was any concern over the amount of alcohol she was consuming, Zanotti replies: ‘Wendy knows her limits.’

Other family members would beg to differ including her son and nephew Travis Finnie who openly declare Williams ‘has a drinking problem.’

The devastating diagnosis was made public towards the end of last week, days before the airing of the four-and-a-half hour documentary.

‘As Wendy’s fans are aware, in the past she has been open with the public about her medical struggles with Graves’ Disease and Lymphedema as well as other significant challenges related to her health,’ her team said in a statement.

‘The decision to share this news was difficult and made after careful consideration, not only to advocate for understanding and compassion for Wendy, but to raise awareness about aphasia and frontotemporal dementia and support the thousands of others facing similar circumstances.

‘Receiving a diagnosis has enabled Wendy to receive the medical care she requires.’

Frontotemporal dementia is a rare disease that affects parts of the brain controlling behavior and language. These parts of the brain shrink as the disease gets worse.

The disease often includes primary progressive aphasia, which means it’s causing problems with language skills. A person with this type of FTD may have trouble finding words or understanding speech.

Williams’ self-titled daytime talk show ended in 2022 because of her health issues. Sherri Shepherd, who filled in for Williams as a guest host, received her own show.

Williams said in 2018 that she had been diagnosed years before with Graves’ disease, which leads to the overproduction of thyroid hormones and can cause wide-ranging symptoms that can affect overall health.

During Sunday night’s documentary family members revealed how they don’t know where she is and cannot call her themselves, but that she can call them if she wishes.

‘I don’t know the exact location of where she is, but I know that she is in an environment that is helping her to heal, emotionally, psychologically and physically,’ Wanda said when asked by the producers. ‘That’s what I hope happens when she gets home.

‘Wendy’s in a more positive place and in a stronger place than she was a year ago,’ Wanda explains. ‘It’s almost like I’m talking to Wendy from years ago. It really is.’

‘It has been a long journey in terms of the experience for our family and for Wendy,’ Wanda Williams, Wendy’s sister says in the documentary.

‘I hope to come out of this letting people see the love that we have as a family together for each other as well as the love we have for Wendy, and to understand the journey we’ve been through that has not always been perfect. Everyone wanted the same thing, which is to see Wendy healthy and happy.’

Wanda could be seen helping family members in their attempt o take back ownership of Williams’ care from her court-appointed guardian.

‘When the whole process started, all members of this family were contacted about Wendy and what we needed for her. My feeling as her sister was that Wendy needs to have somebody with her 24 hours a day for the next few months,’ Wanda detailed.

‘I was told that it involved taking some kind of class, and I said, ‘Yeah I’ll do it.’ I said, ‘Whatever I gotta do, I’ll be focused on Wendy’s health.’ And then all of a sudden, the wall came down and there was nothing.’

Family members share their concerns over who has access to Williams and the possibly intentions of those around her.

‘I still see glimpses of my mom very often. She still has a chance to live a good and healthy life, but she needs to want to live that. I think that she’s just weak and vulnerable and she needs to be around people who aren’t gonna take advantage of that,’ son, Kevin said.

‘I think that my mother should have family surrounding her. I’ve talked to her a lot about her staying in Florida and how much it would benefit her where she can’t harm herself.’

I think in the back of her mind, she knows she would be able to still drink up there and do things that she shouldn’t. I feel like my mom should never be by herself or alone.

Even before Williams was  placed under a court-ordered guardianship, her rights and those of her family began to be stripped away from them.

‘My power of attorney was taken away from me when the court proceeding started,’ Kevin explained. ‘And then they tried to say that while the court case was going on that if we wanted to bring her to Florida, it’d be considered kidnapping.’

The documentary crew set out in 2022 to chronicle Williams’ comeback but were forced to stop filming in April 2023 when, her manager ‘and jeweler’ Will Selby explained how she had to enter a facility to treat ‘cognitive issues.’

Her son, Kevin, says in the documentary that doctors had connected her cognitive issues directly to her excessive alcohol use.

In May of 2022 the New York State court system appointed an independent guardian to manage Williams’ finances.

The guardianship started when Williams’ bank Wells Fargo froze her accounts after her financial adviser at the time allegedly raised concerns that she was of ‘unsound mind,’ according to Williams’ subsequent court filings.

Wells Fargo then petitioned a New York court to have the talk show host put under a guardianship, which a judge approved later in January 2022.

At the time, the bank claimed it feared that Williams’ ‘cognitive issues’ put her at risk of being exploited financially.

Her son, Kevin, was accused of charging $100,000 to her American Express card, but he defended himself and in the documentary clarified that he had never spent a penny without his mother’s consent.

‘Do you think your mother should have a guardian?’ the show’s producer asks Hunter Jr.

‘I think that my mother should have family. The family’s side of the story hasn’t been told, so it’s kind of left this gray space of who’s really telling the truth or what’s really going on. I’ve always wanted the best for my mom. You know, I just stay strong,’ Hunter Jr. stated.

Wendy Williams spoke out about her recent health diagnoses for the first time in a statement on Friday.

The 59-year-old former host of The Wendy Williams Show addressed her fans a day after her team revealed she had been diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia.

“I want to say that I am extremely grateful for the love and kind words I have received after sharing my diagnosis of aphasia and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Let me say, wow! Your response was overwhelming,” she shared in a statement to The Associated Press.

“The messages shared with me have touched me and remind me of the power of unity and the need for compassion.”

‘I would also like to thank the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration for their kind words of support and their extraordinary efforts to raise awareness about FTD,’ she added.

Wendy concluded her statement by saying, “I still need personal space and peace to thrive. Please know that your positivity and encouragement are greatly appreciated.”

It was confirmed on Thursday that Williams has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and primary progressive aphasia.

The star’s care team announced her new diagnosis in a press release.

They said Williams underwent “a battery of medical tests” before arriving at the diagnosis, which came just days before the release of her Lifetime documentary Where Is Wendy Williams? comes, detailing her struggles with alcohol abuse and mental health in recent years.

The diagnoses are largely the same as those that film legend Bruce Willis received in 2022 and 2023.

The statement noted that Williams was diagnosed as early as 2023. The talk show host has reportedly been living in a treatment center since April 2023.

Wendy Williams, the former daytime talk show host, has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia, a condition that makes it difficult or impossible for a person to express or understand language, according to a statement from her representatives.

Ms. Williams, 59, who hosted “The Wendy Williams Show” on Fox for more than a decade, was officially diagnosed last year after “undergoing a series of medical tests,” according to a statement released Thursday.

The tests show that Ms. Williams has primary progressive aphasia, a form of frontotemporal dementia, her representatives said, adding that she was receiving appropriate medical care.

“In recent years, questions have occasionally arisen about Wendy’s ability to process information,” the statement said“and many have speculated about Wendy’s condition, especially when she began to lose words, sometimes act erratically and have difficulty understanding financial transactions.”

The statement was released ahead of this Saturday’s premiere of “Where Is Wendy Williams?” a two-part documentary on the Lifetime network about Ms. Williams.

The project stopped filming in April when, according to the documentary, Ms. Williams entered a care center where she has remained ever since. People magazine reported on Wednesday. Ms. Williams’ son, Kevin Hunter Jr., says in the documentary that doctors linked her cognitive problems to alcohol use, People reported. Ms. Williams’ family told People that a court-appointed legal guardian was the only person who had “unfettered” access to her.

Ms. Williams’ sister, Wanda Finnie, told People that her family did not know which center Ms. Williams was at. They can’t call her themselves, she said, but Mrs. Williams can call them.

In May 2020, Ms. Williams quit her talk show due to fatigue caused by Graves’ autoimmune disease, the show said in a statement at the time. She hosted the premiere of the next season in September 2020but health issues prevented her from returning the following season, and the show used guest hosts before it was canceled in 2022.

Her representatives said they were providing an update on Ms Williams’ health “not only to advocate for understanding and compassion for Wendy, but to raise awareness of aphasia and frontotemporal dementia and support the thousands of others who are in similar circumstances. ”

Frontotemporal dementia is the most common form of dementia in people under the age of 60. Actor Bruce Willis’ family announced in February 2023 that he had frontotemporal dementia.

Primary progressive aphasia is a form of frontotemporal dementia that affects people’s ability to speak and communicate.

“It doesn’t really look like dementia as people typically think of that word,” says Dr. Sami Barmada, a neurologist at Michigan Medicine. With primary progressive aphasia, people may have difficulty finding the right words.

“They may be talking and then suddenly pause – you see them trying to get the words out,” said Dr. Barmada.

Patients can also substitute words if they can’t find them, by saying something like “thing” instead of “remote control.” In some cases, patients may also have difficulty following conversations, especially in groups, and understanding what people around them are saying. The condition progresses slowly over time and there are few treatment options.

The statement from Ms. Williams’ representatives said she was “still able to do many things on her own.”

“Most importantly, she maintains her trademark sense of humor and receives the care she needs to ensure she is protected and her needs are met,” the statement said. “She appreciates the many kind thoughts and well wishes sent her way.”

Bruce Willis' wife, Emma Heming, shared a very touching and poignant Valentine's Day post for her husband.

The 68-year-old Die Hard star suffers from aphasia that has evolved into frontotemporal dementia.

On Wednesday morning, the 45-year-old former model posted a photo of the Moonlighting veteran kissing his wife's face at Niagara Falls.

“Love is a beautiful thing ❤ Wishing you all a happy Valentine's Day,” Emma wrote in a caption. Bruce's daughter Tallulah, who he shares with ex Demi Moore, said: “I love this,” while her sister Rumer added: “This is incredible.”

Emma said in the comments section that she thinks the photo is at least 10 years old. 'Yes! Many years ago! I think it was in 2010,” she wrote.

She later said the date was March 2010. They met in 2007, went public in 2008 and married in 2009.

Bruce and Emma attend the Motherless Brookly premiere during the 57th New York Film Festival in 2019

They have two daughters, Evelyn, nine, and Mabel, 11.

Willis has three daughters with his ex-wife Moore: Rumer Glenn Willis, 35, Scout LaRue Willis, 32, and Tallulah Belle Willis, 30.

It has been reported that Bruce's family is all staying under one roof amid his health issues.

A source recently told Us Weekly about his battle with dementia: “Bruce has good days and bad days, but over the past two months there have been way more bad days than good.

'This experience has brought the whole family even closer together. No one knows how much time Bruce has left, so they enjoy every moment they are with him.”

Another insider added: 'Once Bruce was diagnosed, everyone came together to keep his memory of the family intact and be there as a constant reminder [that they] love him. (Everything) revolves around him.

“Unfortunately, there is a ticking clock related to Bruce's condition. Everyone comes together for Bruce. They are grateful to have each other.'

In January, Willis' daughter Scout posted a photo of the actor stroking her hair as she lay on his bare chest amid his battle with dementia.

The 32-year-old and her mother Moore, 61, shared a ton of family snaps from 2023 over the Christmas holidays, including some never-before-seen of Bruce, who was forced to quit acting.

In February 2023, his loved ones revealed that his condition had worsened and he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

In one of the most poignant photos Scout and Demi shared of Bruce, she rests on her father's chest, with his tattoos on display – including the names of his daughters Mabel, 11, and Evelyn, nine, who he shares with his wife Emma.

Other snaps included Scout holding her father's hand as they rested at a table.

This comes a month after Moore said he's enjoying all the “clichés” of being a grandma.

The 61-year-old actress became a grandmother for the first time when she welcomed her eldest Louetta Isley with her partner Derek Richard Thomas in April 2023 and is loving being able to have “fun” with the little one before sending her back to her mother.

She told E! News: “She is just a pure joy. It really is all cliché. You get all the fun and joy, and you get to go to bed early and have a good night's sleep.”

Late last year, “House Bunny” star Rumer admitted that motherhood “exceeded” her expectations, even though she had dreamed of having children all her life.

She told People: “Honestly, being a mother is an experience I've dreamed of my whole life. And what was incredible to experience is that Lou far exceeded any expectations, ideas or dreams I had. Children are amazing and really getting to witness and be around these magical little creatures as they explore the world is incredible.”

She also revealed that the little one's name is a tribute to her 'Die Hard' star dad Bruce – who suffers from frontotemporal dementia – as she was named after his two favorite singers.

During an Instagram Q+A, she said: 'I've always loved the name Lou, so I thought about it for both a boy and a girl, but when we found out she was a girl we settled on Louetta.

“We wanted to give her options and mine and my dad's favorite singers are Lou = Louie Armstrong, Etta = Etta James, Isley = Isley Brothers.”
