A man has died and two more are fighting for life after being pulled unconscious from the water at a beach off Victoria’s Great Ocean Road.

The trio, who have yet to be formally identified, were swimming in the ocean at Marengo, near Apollo Bay, on Sunday afternoon when they got into trouble, police said.

A passing woman was able to bring the men to shore one by one while others attempted CPR on the beach.

“Despite their efforts, one man was pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said in a statement.

A man in his 20s was airlifted to Alfred Hospital. His condition was serious on Sunday evening.

A second man in his 20s was taken by ambulance to Geelong Hospital in a critical condition.

The three men have not yet been formally identified.

The police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Four people died on an unguarded beach on Victoria’s Phillip Island in January, in what was the state’s deadliest drowning event in about two decades.

There were 55 coastal drownings across the country this summer, 19 of which were in Victoria.

A few days later That Mother’s Day photo, and I must confess I’m none the wiser as to what the hell is going on with the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Let’s start with the latter’s mea culpa, her admission that it was she who edited the photo. It’s clearly meant to draw a line under the whole thing, but her statement has only added another layer to the millefeuille of conspiracies, raising far more questions than it answers.

For starters, the idea of the princess hunched over an Apple Mac, playing with a family snapshot in Photoshop just seems so strange.

Isn’t she supposed to be recovering from abdominal surgery? Doesn’t she have anything better to do with her evenings? Besides, what could be so wrong with a simple photo of her and the kids that warrants so much editing?

And even if some retouching might be needed (after all, most official photos these days have a little help from the filter fairies), doesn’t Kensington Palace have a professional on hand to make such improvements? I know King Charles wants a scaled-back monarchy, but surely the royal purse can still extend to proper technical support?

There is no doubt that audiences have enormous affection for Kate and William, and for their children – and great empathy for the challenges they face.

No fewer than twelve changes have been clearly identified, and there are questions about other aspects of it – ranging from the intriguing to the downright insane. Some crazy people are even suggesting that the image is from November last year – although there is no indication from the metadata (digital information about a photo, including details of the device used, plus location, dates and more) that it was taken remotely. WHERE. Nevertheless, it just seems so…well, amateur.

Even stranger to me is that the only thing that really stands out about the photo, the detail that probably sets the tongue wagging, has been left untouched.

I’m of course talking about the fact that the princess isn’t wearing any of her rings. It is true that she does not always wear the diamond and sapphire engagement ring for obvious reasons. But her wedding ring? When has the Princess of Wales ever been seen without it?

Now there may be a perfectly good medical reason why she isn’t wearing it. As Dr. Martin Scurr explained in the Daily Mail, her doctor could have advised her not to do this, in case her knuckles swell after surgery or as a result of certain medications. Or maybe she has lost some weight, which is not unusual after abdominal surgery, and she doesn’t want to risk it slipping off her finger.

Anyway, if you were to change something about the photo digitally, wouldn’t that be the case? Forget Charlotte’s sleeve, just put that wedding ring back on. If nothing else, to keep people from putting two and two together and making it five.

Especially since the prince hasn’t been quite himself lately, having failed to attend the memorial service of the late King Constantine of Greece in St. George’s Chapel a few weeks ago, and he has less than an hour of canceled in advance due to a ‘personal matter’.

This wasn’t just anyone, it was his godfather – and the prince’s name was on the order of service. Furthermore, the chapel is just a few minutes’ drive from his home in the grounds of Windsor Castle. How serious could a ‘personal matter’ have been that he couldn’t get away for an hour or so?

All of which makes the absence of that wedding ring in a photo that the princess says she spent a lot of time doctoring even more worrying. It almost seems intentional, a statement in itself. If it’s not there, could it be because she doesn’t want it there? You don’t have to think about it.

William and Kate were spotted leaving Windsor for Westminster Abbey yesterday afternoon

William and Kate were spotted leaving Windsor for Westminster Abbey yesterday afternoon

Certainly that photo of them leaving Windsor together in the car yesterday was not exactly encouraging. They didn’t look particularly cheerful, she with her back to the camera in a shadowed profile and he looking somberly at his papers.

Of course, all this can mean nothing. But it can also mean something. And that’s the real problem here. As much as I’d like to think that this, as is so often the case in life, is more nonsense than a conspiracy, at every turn the combined silliness of Kensington Palace and, let’s face it, the attitude of the Prince and the Princess of Wales herself conspires to make someone think differently.

I say this not out of criticism, but rather out of genuine concern for the couple and their well-being. After all, life in the royal fishbowl is far from simple. The princess has clearly undergone a very unpleasant operation and is coming to the end of a very difficult and destabilizing period for both of them.

One should not underestimate the emotional strain – affecting the entire royal family – resulting from the loss of their great matriarch, the late Queen. Add to that the King’s cancer diagnosis, and it has inevitably been a worrying few months.

It also goes without saying that the pressure that has been placed on them both as a result of the allegations made against them by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has been enormous, and the attacks on the Princess in particular have been particularly vicious.

It’s also worth remembering that things haven’t been so easy on Kate’s side of the family either. Her parents’ company, Party Pieces, was declared bankrupt last year with debts of more than £2.5 million. That will inevitably have taken its toll.

Is it any wonder the princess is sick? The body has its own way of telling you when it has had enough.

So I’m not saying that they don’t have good reason to feel a little confused or behave a little strangely. Just because you’re a royal doesn’t mean life is all diamonds and tiaras, far from it. And there is no doubt that the public has enormous affection for them both and for their children – and great empathy for the challenges they face.

But the trouble with the image is that it is, in fact, a lie. What’s worse, it now looks like a lie concocted to cover up other lies, a classic example of that old adage: It’s not the crime that gets you, it’s the cover-up. And there’s only one way to put an end to it: make it clear what’s really going on – or risk drowning in a swamp of their own making.

Sofie spends her evenings searching through trash cans in hopes of hitting the jackpot and stocking her refrigerator for the next few weeks.

And after sharing the results of her latest dive, we can say that her findings are quite impressive.

In a clip posted to TikTok (@dumpsterdivingwsoff), she can be seen looking into a giant black bin filled to the brim with produce.

Presumably they are close to their expiration date, or have simply been thrown away by the supermarkets for some reason.

Goodies include breads, wafer-thin ham and oranges.

And don't forget something to wash it all down with…

Sofie can be seen looking delighted as she stands beaming next to three crates of Pilsner beer and two twenty packs of Pepsi, which have also been thrown away.

“POV: You're a dumpster diver and you're constantly drowning in food and drink,” she says.

She takes her findings home and shows how much she has been able to avoid dumpster diving by putting her drink cans on the top of her cupboards.

She also shows off her fridge, which is packed with everything from orange juice to apro milk and condiments.

For those with a sweet tooth, Sofie also managed to get her hands on some custard pastries – and there's no doubt she won't have to worry about another dumpster dive anytime soon.

She opens the freezer door and struggles to put more food in.

I jump into bins and rummage through the rubbish looking for treats

“Please send help!” she jokes.

Sofie captioned the post: “I will never buy food or drinks again!! It never ceases to amaze me how much delicious food and delicious drinks are wasted EVERY DAY!!

“I'm literally drowning in drinks and food…”

The post has since gone viral, racking up thousands of views and several comments from social media users.

“I also dumpster dive and my freezer is the same,” wrote one.

Sofie replied: “It's crazy!”

A second enthused: “Great idea!”

A third wrote: “Wow amazing!”

And a fourth added: “I want this!”

Four family members who drowned on a Phillip Island beach were swept away by a rip in the surf, police say.

Two women and a man, all in their 20s and living in Melbourne, were pulled unconscious from the water near Forrest Caves, an unguarded beach in the south-west of the island, about 3.20pm on Wednesday.

Paramedics tried to save their lives, but they died on the spot.

Another woman, 43, was pulled to shore a short time later.

She was taken to Melbourne's Alfred Hospital in a critical condition and died on Thursday.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Karen Nyholm said at a press conference on Thursday that the 43-year-old was on holiday in Australia.

Two women and a man, all in their 20s and living in Melbourne, were pulled unconscious from the water near Forrest Caves, an unguarded beach in the south-west of the island, about 3.20pm on Wednesday.

“Yesterday afternoon there was an extended family at the beach and four of those family members decided to wade in the water,” she said.

“The waters down here are known for their rifts and treacherous conditions and unfortunately those four people have been swept into what we believe is a rift condition.”

A rip is a very strong and narrow current that pulls the water back to sea. They can pull swimmers from the beach at a speed of about one to two meters per second.

Ms Nyholm said the impact of the deaths would be 'profound' on the family, as well as the police, paramedics and life savers who tried to save their lives.

There were harrowing scenes on the beach as lifeguards pulled the bodies from the water on Wednesday.

Someone was heard shouting: 'I told them not to go; I should have been there.”

Alex Tzatzimakis, who was on the beach, said the situation was “terrible.”

She said beachgoers were in tears as bystanders who heroically brought the four people back to shore performed CPR.

“The family was very upset,” Ms Tzatzimakis told 7News.

'There seemed to be a group of ten people who came here to have a really nice day. Apparently it has become a tragedy.'

Life Saving Victoria director Kane Treloar said off-duty lifeguards surfing the beach tried to rescue the swimmers.

“When we arrived on scene, our lifeguards discovered that off-duty lifeguards had pulled three of those people from the water and one of our rescue boats had pulled that last person from the water,” he said.

He said Forrest Caves Beach was very dangerous for swimmers because of the tidal waves.

The beach is also not patrolled.

“It's almost 20 years since we've seen a single event that resulted in such a large loss of life in Victorian waters,” he said.

'Our thoughts go out to all those involved.'

The police do not consider the situation suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

On a crisp fall day at Birmingham-Southern College, students headed to class and stole a few chilly minutes under the golden ginkgo trees. Inside the red brick buildings on the 192-acre campus, professors were preparing finals week exams while administrators prepared the first round of acceptance letters for the next school year.

Yet a troubling question loomed over these typical scenes of college life: Would the school even make it through a fall semester?

The private liberal arts school in Birmingham, Alabama, has been plagued by financial instability for years, with the 2009 recession and the coronavirus pandemic exacerbating the effects of overly ambitious investments and massive debt.

Closure seemed imminent earlier this year, until Alabama lawmakers appeared to offer a lifeline: a law aimed at saving the 167-year-old school with a multimillion-dollar loan program. But in October, the state treasurer denied the school’s loan application, prompting administrators to once again scramble to save the school.

For many outside the school, the fate simply turns on whether a private school that has mismanaged its finances deserves any kind of taxpayer support, especially in a state that has chronically underfunded its public education system. But for alumni and the school’s supporters, there is also the question of whether classical liberal arts education is still valued at a time when colleges and universities face intense scrutiny of their curricula, admissions requirements and cultures.

In the middle sit hundreds of students and professors, drawn by the school’s promise and now forced to reckon with its mistakes.

“There was a time when I didn’t even want to do my homework, do my work or go to class because what’s the point?” said Jadynn Hunter, 21, who is one semester away from graduating with a media studies degree. Like many on campus, she was roiled by fears of a possible school closure a year ago, before the Legislature acted.

If Birmingham-South were to close, it would mean the end of one of the most prominent liberal arts colleges in a state that has very few of them. Her allies also claim that the city of Birmingham would be deprived of one famous institution that has funneled millions of dollars into the local economy and kept the state’s youth from leaving for opportunities elsewhere.

“If a state like Alabama loses Birmingham-Southern, it’s not good for anyone,” said Daniel Coleman, the school’s president and former Wall Street executive who commuted weekly to Chicago and New York from Birmingham.

He added: “It’s easy to complain about flyover country, but if you want to do something about it, you have to support the institutions that are doing something about it.”

There is no denying the college’s long-standing financial desperation, which has its roots in the founding of a Methodist university, Southern University, in 1856. Previous administrations borrowed money liberally to undertake a series of architectural improvements as a way to attract more students to attract. (A man-made lake in particular represents what is now described by many on campus as the folly of an “if we build it, they will come” attitude.)

And then, in 2010, the council heard from one multi-million dollar accounting error in the way federal student financial aid was calculated, plundering its relatively modest endowments without replenishing the funds. The debt quickly became insurmountable, and last year administrators quietly began seeking as much as $30 million from the state while also working to raise more private donations and rebuild the endowment.

Although Alabama has repeatedly ranked near the bottom of national rankings for money spent per student in kindergarten through high school, it currently has a surplus of education funds, boosted in part by federal pandemic relief.

“The challenge we face now is really a political issue, not an educational issue,” said Ream Shoreibah, associate professor of marketing at Birmingham-Southern.

Since December of last year, students have been struggling with whether to transfer and potentially lose credits, or stay and risk the school closing. Among the nearly 280 employees, professors talked to their families about relocating and worried whether cafeteria and prison workers would be able to find comparable jobs.

Enrollment at the school — which has an annual tuition of $21,500, although administration said every student received at least some financial aid — has fallen to about 731 students this fall. One-third of the student body consists of first-generation students.

“Some of my friends had to transfer to another college just because their parents wouldn’t let them come here anymore, so all of this happening a second time really had a negative impact on the students,” said Gabrielle Houston, 23, a junior studying for an English degree. Like other students, Ms. Houston believed that the Legislature’s creation of the loan program had finally averted the threat of closure.

But Ms Houston, who needs some classroom learning opportunities, said she couldn’t imagine continuing her education elsewhere without that level of support.

The school’s survival is also irrevocably intertwined with Bush Hills and College Hills, two predominantly black neighborhoods surrounding the school in west Birmingham. The precarious funding situation has once again sparked some pain and criticism, such as the way the school’s impressive exterior wall – built after a student was murdered just days after her graduation in 1976 – fueled the perception that a largely white institution was isolating itself from its black neighbors. (Black, Asian and Latino students now make up about a third of the student population, a figure the school says is higher than some of its peers in Alabama.)

But several community leaders are concerned about the prospect of nearly 200 acres sitting vacant in their midst. Closing Birmingham-South, they say, would end a thriving partnership: no more Halloweens where neighborhood kids can trick-or-treat on campus, no more student volunteers at the community farm or student teachers at their schools.

“The fact that we are a private university does not hinder us or hinder us from thinking about the ways in which we can educate this community around us,” said Marlon A. Smith, a visiting professor, who considered the opportunity established. of establishing a black studies program in a city shaped by the civil rights movement.

“So you’re going to take an institution that can make that investment?” he asked. ‘I don’t know how well they did, but I wasn’t here at the time. I’m here now.”

Some professors, who have watched the conservative overhaul of public schools like New College of Florida with suspicion, also said that working at a private institution gave them more freedom to challenge their students on sensitive topics.

“We are a liberal arts college — that doesn’t translate very well in the state of Alabama,” said Jim Neel, who graduated from the university in 1971 and now teaches sculpture there. “Liberal arts education is the foundation of all higher education. It is not something new and it has nothing to do with party politics, but that is how it seems to read.”

Although top Republicans failed to provide the school with a grant, the Legislature ultimately negotiated a loan program tailored to Birmingham-Southern’s circumstances.

Young Boozer III, the state treasurer, was given the authority to determine the worthiness of each candidate. In October, he denied applications from both Selma University, a historically black Christian university, and Birmingham-Southern.

“It’s a shame, it’s tragic what’s happening to the students — there’s no doubt about that,” Mr. Boozer said in an interview. “But it’s not my fault. It is the fault of the management and board of directors of the school.”

He added, “I have just been asked to try to assess whether or not the state of Alabama tax dollars will be used to save a school that is a private school.”

The school has unsuccessfully sued Mr Boozer and has also tried to amend the application to address his concerns, promising to prioritize debt owed to the state and mapping out an ambitious plan to raise enough outside money to collect.

He has remained unmoved, pointing to the school’s small enrollment and low teacher-student ratio — both part of its appeal to students and teachers alike — as reasons for skepticism that the school will be able to fill a deficit.

Birmingham City Council recently approved a $5 million loan to the school and joins the Methodist Church in providing financial support.

But, said Victor Biebighauser, a former president of South University, a private school in Montgomery, and a longtime friend of Mr. Boozer, “if they can’t solve their structural financial problems, namely their declining revenues and their excessive debt, they will are just band-aids.”

For now, the remaining students are waiting for something to change.

“People are really trying to bring this school down and we continue to rise above it,” said Anna Withers Wellingham, a 22-year-old senior and student body president.

“This is a school that teaches you much more than just a liberal arts education,” she added, “and it is worth fighting for.”

The man who drowned on a newly opened inland ‘beach’ spent his final moments trying to keep his son above water, it has been revealed.

Seti Tuaopepe is being remembered as a kind and gentle family man following the tragedy at Penrith Beach in Sydney’s west on Boxing Day.

Mr Tuaopepe, in his 30s, was paddle boarding with his children when they fell into the water.

It is understood Mr Tuaopepe kept his children above water until a rescuer arrived at 2.35pm on Tuesday, but was unable to save himself, the Daily Telegraph reported.

After the boy was pulled from the water, the beach was closed and rescue crews began a desperate search for Mr Tuaopepe.

NSW Police divers and a Toll rescue helicopter were called in as part of the extensive effort.

Mr Tuaopepe’s body was found at around 6.15pm, about four hours after he went missing.

There has been an outpouring of grief for Mr Tuaopepe, who grew up in Samoa, studied in New Zealand and moved to Australia for work.

“You were kind, quiet and a very gentle classmate,” a friend wrote on Facebook.

“You were a family man…condolences to your wife, children and family. Rest in peace and in the loving arms of our Lord.”

Penrith Beach officially opened last week and was immediately nicknamed Pondi, after the famous eastern suburb of Bondi Beach, and received mixed reviews from visitors.

A NSW government website bluntly lists what isn’t allowed on the beach, such as cycling, being dropped off by a family member and even visiting without a booking – with some dismissing the rules as ‘un-Australian’.

Penrith Beach is open from 7am to 7pm during the warmer months from December 19 to March 3.

Pro-Palestinian protesters disrupted Chanel Nine’s Carols by Candlelight extravaganza by storming the stage and grabbing the host’s microphone.

During the broadcast at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl, presenters David Campbell and Sarah Abo were drowned out by chants of ‘Free Palestine’.

Moments later, several protesters carrying Palestinian flags stormed the stage as cameras opened a wide shot.

‘While you’re singing, children are dying in Gaza!’ a voice shouted into the microphone before security dragged her away along with the other protesters.

A stunned Campbell tried to defuse the tense situation as young families looked on in horror.

“Just take it easy, it’s okay,” Campbell said. “Everyone, relax and unwind.”

‘Everyone can have their say, but we do have children here. We just want to make sure those kids are safe. They’ll be right back here,” he added, referring to the performers on stage.

“It’s a very difficult time in the world right now and there’s a lot of pain out there.”

Security and hosts were praised for their handling of the ordeal.

But many viewers lashed out at the protesters, calling it a “disgrace.”

‘Protesting Christmas carols is an interesting choice, especially when there are children on stage. I’m incredibly impressed with the way the hosts handled it,” someone wrote on X.

Another said: ‘What a shame to try and spoil a great Christmas Eve for everyone, this isn’t the place to do that.’

The ongoing protest followed a day of Palestinian protests in Melbourne and Sydney's Hyde Park (pictured) for the eleventh week in a row.

A third added: ‘I’m all for people having their say but there’s a place and a time and an event full of kids, right.

“I don’t condone or agree with what is happening to innocent people in Palestine, but I don’t agree with this either.”

A member of Australia’s Jewish community also spoke out against the protest.

“You can always count on anti-Israel extremists to go all out and scare off decent, ordinary people,” said Alex Ryvchin, co-CEO of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

“The chorus of boos tells them loud and clear that they are not wanted.”

Friends star Matthew Perry died from ketamine and drowning, his autopsy revealed.

“The County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner has determined the cause of death of 54-year-old actor Matthew Langford Perry to be the acute effects of ketamine,” the Los Angeles coroner’s office said Friday.

‘Factors contributing to Mr. Perry’s death include drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine (used to treat opioid use disorder). The manner of death is accidental.”

Perry, 54, was found dead at his Los Angeles home at 4:17 p.m. on October 28, stunning the showbiz world and breaking the hearts of fans around the world.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and the medical examiner performed the autopsy on October 29.

Ketamine can be prescribed as a medical treatment, but it is unclear whether the drugs in Perry’s system were purchased with a prescription.

Months before his death, he released a tell-all memoir with shocking details about his drug and alcohol addiction.

But he said in October 2022 that he had been sober for 18 months, although that was a year before his death.

Those who knew him claim Perry was clean and sober at the time of his death.

When investigators went to Perry’s home, they found no illegal drugs, but did find prescription medications that were properly labeled and kept in storage bottles.

WHAT IS KETAMIN?

Ketamine is a powerful general anesthetic used to prevent humans and animals from experiencing pain during surgery.

It was used as a party drug in the late 2000s, with people taking it before raves for a more intense experience.

What are the side effects?

Ketamine causes loss of sensation and muscle paralysis.

It can also cause people to experience a distortion of reality, which many call entering the “k-hole.”

This is when people believe they have spoken to God or a higher power, which can lead to addiction because they long for that experience.

Ketamine can also make people unable to move, experience hallucinations or lead to panic attacks, confusion and memory loss.

Regular users can seriously damage their bladder, which may require surgical removal.

Other risks include increased heart rate and blood pressure.

Muscle paralysis can cause people to hurt themselves, while not feeling the pain properly can cause them to underestimate the damage.

Many claim that ketamine withdrawal is worse than any other drug, and some feel so depressed that they consider suicide.

How is it taken and what is the law surrounding it?

For medical use, ketamine is liquid, but the “street” drug is normally a grainy, white powder.

In 1999, ketamine became a Schedule III non-narcotic substance under the Controlled Substances Act. It currently has accepted medical applications for short-term sedation and anesthesia.

In 2019, the FDA approved a version of the drug for treatment-resistant depression, which is only available at a doctor’s office or clinic.

In the memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry wrote that after his colon exploded in 2018, he was prescribed opiates that he deemed insufficient to deal with his pain.

This led him to turn to street dealers to supply him with potentially fatal fentanyl-laced OxyContin.

“The street pills cost about $75 a pill, so I gave the guy $3,000 a pop, many times a week,” he wrote.

Perry wrote that he spent $9 million to get sober, attended 6,000 AA meetings, went to rehab 15 times and was in detox 65 times.

At his lowest point, he was taking 55 Vicodin a day to fuel his addiction.

He said that in 2021, he overcame his addiction and lived a healthier lifestyle.

He started playing pickle ball — a game similar to tennis and table tennis — and usually played it twice a day, friends said.

Perry was found underwater by his assistant, who lifted his head in an attempt to give him some air, first responders previously revealed.

Captain Erik Scott of the LAFD said, “The Los Angeles City Fire Department responded [and] found an adult man unconscious in a free-standing hot tub.

‘A bystander had lifted the man’s head above the water and brought him to the edge, after which the fire brigade pulled him out of the water on arrival.

“A rapid medical assessment unfortunately determined that the man was deceased before first responders arrived.”

Perry was laid to rest in an intimate ceremony at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills, attended by his Friends co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox and David Schwimmer.

Perry wrote in his memoir that he was helped during his drug addiction and recovery by a female personal assistant whom he considered his rock and “best friend.”

Morgan Moses, mentioned in the book only by the pseudonym “Erin,” first met Perry when he was admitted to a rehab facility where she worked.

The pair went on to form a friendship that would last almost a decade, becoming the closest and most loving – though always platonic – relationship of his life.

Moses, 37, is a “down-to-earth companion” who described the troubled Friends star as “the nicest person in the world.”

On her LinkedIn page, Moses says she has been working ‘full-time’ as a ‘sober partner’ since 2018.

Her skills include ‘therapeutic crisis intervention’, ‘mental health first aid’, ‘behavioral intervention’ and ‘nutrition advice’.

Originally a website designer, she graduated from Full Sail University in Florida, while her social media suggests she has also had her own addiction struggles and sobriety journey.
