The Princess of Wales today revealed she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy following her shock cancer diagnosis.

Chemotherapy uses powerful drugs to attack tumors and is typically given to directly treat cancer or shrink a tumor in preparation for surgery.

As in the case of Kate Middleton, chemo can also be used as a preventive option in the hope of preventing the return of cancer.

Today, Kate, 42, said in a statement that she has undergone this preventive form of chemotherapy. She started treatment at the end of February.

At the time, it was believed that the reason for Kate’s surgery was not cancer.

Today she said subsequent tests showed it was cancerous.

Kate was then advised to undergo preventive chemotherapy and described herself as being in the ‘early stages’ of that treatment.

Preventive chemotherapy, also called adjuvant chemotherapy, aims to prevent cancer from returning once the main tumor has been removed from the body.

Cancer can spread to other parts of the body, a process called metastasis, in which small cancer cells break off the main tumor and take root elsewhere.

These “new” cancers can be difficult to detect, so doctors who specialize in treating cancer, called oncologists, often advise patients to undergo preventive chemotherapy in an attempt to eliminate any remaining traces of the disease.

Preventive chemotherapy is usually administered as an infusion or tablets, where they are then carried throughout the body by the bloodstream.

Depending on the type, chemotherapy can be administered in a hospital or at the patient’s home.

There are more than 100 types of chemotherapy drugs, but they all work in a similar way and circulate through the blood.

The drugs are cytotoxic, meaning they are toxic to cells and especially to cells that are dividing rapidly.

Because cancer cells divide more than healthy cells, they are more affected by chemotherapy, which is why it is used as a treatment for the disease.

However, other types of fast-growing cells, such as hair, bone marrow, skin and the lining of the digestive system, are also damaged.

This leads to some of the famous side effects of chemotherapy, such as hair loss or thinning, fatigue, easier bruising and bleeding, an increased risk of infection, diarrhea or constipation, nausea or vomiting, rash, and more.

Often a patient undergoing chemotherapy is also taking other medications intended to alleviate or combat some of these symptoms.

The specific dosage and type of chemotherapy used varies depending on the type of cancer.

The effectiveness of preventive chemotherapy varies considerably from patient to patient.

Factors that influence its success include the specific type of cancer, when the cancer was originally treated, the patient’s age, and whether he or she has any other health problems.

The specific type of cancer Kate has has not been revealed.

Around 375,000 cases of cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year, with 167,000 patients dying from the disease each year.

Survival rates vary considerably by type of cancer. In total, 50 percent of cancer patients will still be alive ten years after their diagnosis.

Kate’s battle with cancer in her own words: Full emotional video statement from the Princess of Wales

I wanted to take this opportunity to personally thank you for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding while I was recovering from surgery.

It’s been an incredibly tough few months for our whole family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.

In January I had major abdominal surgery in London and at the time my condition was deemed to be non-cancerous. The operation was successful. However, tests after the surgery revealed that cancer was present. My medical team therefore recommended that I undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.

This obviously came as a huge shock, and William and I have done everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.

As you can imagine, this has taken time. It took me time to recover from major surgery before I could start my treatment. But the most important thing is that it took us time to explain everything

George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that suits them, and to reassure them that I will be fine.

As I told them; I am doing well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirit.

Having William by my side is also a great source of comfort and reassurance. As does the love, support and kindness shown by so many of you. It means so much to both of us.

We hope you understand that we as a family now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.

At this time I also think of all those whose lives have been touched by cancer. To anyone facing this disease in any form, please do not lose faith and hope. You are not alone.

But as you get closer, the windows and doors are a facade: pieces of plastic to disguise the empty and dilapidated houses.

Locals now say Horden is some sort of ‘ghost town’ or ‘hell hole’ populated by ‘drug addicts’.

Full-time mother Sarah Smith, 32, is pregnant and desperate to escape the village before her baby is born.

Her terraced house is located between two vacant houses, both of which have been broken into.

She said: ‘The fake windows and doors are supposed to make the houses look better but they don’t work.

“How can a fake window look better than a real one? All they do is make it harder for people to break into.

‘The drug addicts are not fooled by it, they are not stupid.

“It’s too dangerous for my daughter, and she’s with my mother. The house needs repair after repair.

“Houses are being burned. They’re putting things through your mailbox in an attempt to set your house on fire.

‘The fake windows and doors don’t help anything.

We live in an abandoned ghost town where luxurious mansions are left to rot and overrun by squatters and drug addicts

‘People know they are fake. All they do is make it harder for the drugs to break in.

‘Nobody has a job here. The only job they have is to drink 24/7 and go crazy and steal to support their addiction.

‘I go out of the neighborhood to shop and visit family. There’s nothing here. It is forgotten, not cared about. It’s hell.’

Durham County Council describes the stickers as “decorative skins” used to cover properties that are uninhabited and in a state of disrepair.

Horden seems largely deserted and the residents speak of an eerie ‘ghost town’ during the day in a village that comes alive at night with antisocial people and ‘drugs’.

Sara Smith

Residents are attracted by cheap rental prices, while landlords buy properties for an average of £40,000, with some homes selling for as little as £5,000.

Full-time mother Liza Chapman, 45, said: “The fake windows and doors look horrible.

“I don’t really see the point of them.

“I have no idea why they did it. I’m a little baffled by it.

“I think the area actually looks worse.

“The municipality should put some money into helping the homeless, they should renovate the houses.”

The village was once a thriving mining community, but has struggled with unemployment and a stagnant housing market since the mines closed in 1987.

For decades, Horden Beach was a dumping ground for coal waste and one of the most polluted in the world.

Unemployed Thomas Galloway, 30, said there was now nothing for children in the city to do.

‘They use drugs, break into empty houses and destroy everything.

The fake doors and windows make the room look a little neater. At first I thought they were real.

Aleisha Summerhill

‘It should keep the community looking tidy and prevent windows from being smashed.

‘It does not work. There are many smashed windows.

“The landlords have no problem making the houses nice because the rent is so cheap. It’s a vicious circle.”

Full-time mum Aleisha Summerhill, 23, added: “The fake doors and windows make the room look a bit tidier. At first I thought they were real.

‘They should do the same with all vacant buildings.

‘It’s not the best place to live.

‘There are a lot of drugs and anti-social behaviour.

“It feels quiet during the day, but don’t let that fool you. At night it’s a completely different place.

“There will be fighting and shouting in the streets. It can be a nightmare.

“I’m trying to get out of here.”

Michael Kelleher, head of planning and housing at Durham County Council, said: “We are pleased that the friendliness and warmth of the people of Horden was picked up by visitors in this video.

“We of course recognize that the village, as is the case with many communities across the country, is not without challenges.

“That is why we are determined to do everything we can, with the resources at our disposal, to enable recovery and support community projects for the benefit of local people.

‘We also continue to look for funding to do more, including the opportunities that decentralization offers.

“Under phase one of our Horden Masterplan, we are investing more than £6 million in new and existing homes, with the aim of providing warm, safe and affordable housing for local people.

“Through the services we provide, and by working with other agencies through our Horden Together project, we aim to tackle issues that matter to local people, including crime, drugs, health, housing and the environment.

“Through our selective licensing system in the village, we seek to improve conditions in rental properties and tackle problems caused by absentee owners, for the benefit of residents and the community.

“Over recent years we have worked with landlords to provide decorative skins for doors and windows of vacant properties, to improve their appearance and security; Residents told us this has had a positive impact on the community.”

We live in a once thriving seaside resort where houses now sell for as little as ‘£1’

Horden was once home to Horden Colliery, which set a record for the most coal mined in a single day, with 6,758 tons extracted on 9 May 1930.

The colliery, which was famous throughout Europe, closed in February 1987 as Britain’s coal mining industry declined.

The once proud mining village, located 25 miles south of Newcastle, has suffered a sad decline in recent decades and is now littered with abandoned, boarded-up houses.

The area has now become so undesirable that some houses are now for sale for as little as “£1”.

Indian Coast Guard: In a joint night operation on the intervening nights of March 11 and 12, 2024, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), acting on intelligence information, arrested a Pakistani boat with six crew members and narcotics on board, worth around Rs 480 crore .

The boat was stopped about 350 km from Porbandar in the Arabian Sea during a naval air coordinated operation involving ICG ships and Dornier aircraft. The operation showed well-coordinated efforts between ICG, NCB and ATS Gujrat.

The Indian Coast Guard, based on specific intelligence inputs from agencies, strategically positioned its ships in the Arabian Sea on Monday, March 11.

ICG also ordered its Dornier aircraft to scan and locate the boat in likely areas. After an extensive search of the area, the ICG ships, with teams from NCB and ATS Gujarat, arrived at the location and positively identified the boat that was moving suspiciously in the dark. When challenged by ICG ships, the boat began to evade, but was deftly pursued and forced to stop by ICG ships.

The boarding team immediately boarded the ship for preliminary checks and investigations.

The boat turned out to be a Pakistani boat with six crew members. A search by the joint boarding team and a rummage of the boat revealed around 80 kg of drugs worth around Rs 480 crore.

The boat and crew have been arrested and are being taken to Porbandar for further investigation. This is the tenth arrest by ICG, along with ATS Gujarat and NCB in the last three years, amounting to 517 kg of narcotics worth Rs 3135 crores.

Jake Paul

“Alles in mijn leven viel uiteen. Er komen donkere gedachten in je hoofd, zoals: ‘Ik wil haar niet meer op aarde zijn’.”

Honduras’ former two-term president denied in court Tuesday that he had trafficked narcotics, offered police protection to drug cartels or accepted bribes — claims at the heart of a conspiracy trial taking place in Manhattan.

Former President Juan Orlando Hernández has been on trial in Federal District Court for two weeks on charges of conspiring to import cocaine into the United States. Prosecutors said he worked with ruthless drug gangs like the Sinaloa Cartel, led by Mexican drug lord Joaquín Guzman Loera, better known as El Chapo.

The government’s witnesses include a series of former human traffickers from Honduras who have said they bribed Mr. Hernández in exchange for promises that he would shield them from investigations and protect them from extradition to the United States.

Dressed in a dark suit with a blue shirt and tie, Mr. Hernández sat upright during his testimony, sometimes giving long, discursive answers that prompted the judge overseeing the trial to rein him in.

Other times his answers were curt.

“Have you ever received bribes from El Chapo?” one of Mr. Hernández’s lawyers asked at one point.

“Never,” Mr. Hernández replied.

He gave the same answer to successive questions about whether he had ever met El Chapo, his traffickers or anyone claiming to be a member of the Sinaloa Cartel.

When one of his lawyers asked whether he had promised cartels that he would protect them, Mr. Hernández replied: “On the contrary, sir. The problem was that we were going to end them.”

Throughout the trial, rows of benches in the courtroom have been filled with Hondurans who watched Mr. Hernández perform in a judicial process of the kind that some doubted could have taken place in Honduras. Those who couldn’t find a seat in the courtroom instead watched the proceedings on a large screen in an overflow room on another floor of the courthouse.

During Mr. Hernández’s direct testimony on Tuesday, some in the courtroom gallery were entranced. Sometimes others laughed derisively, and on one occasion a statement from Mr. Hernández was met with a long hiss.

It is almost always considered risky for a criminal defendant to testify, because friendly questions from an attorney are usually followed by sharp cross-examination by prosecutors.

Some defendants decide to testify because they believe they can influence jurors; Others may choose to take a stand if they feel the tide of litigation is turning against them and they have little to lose.

During cross-examination of Hernández on Tuesday afternoon, a prosecutor asked him why several accused traffickers whose extradition had been requested by the United States had not been turned over while he was president. Mr. Hernández responded that his government had referred all extradition requests to the Honduran Supreme Court.

Later, the prosecutor asked Mr. Hernández about a photo taken during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa that showed him with a man named Miguel Arnulfo Valle Valle, who was a leader of a violent drug gang. Mr. Hernández responded that he believed the photo had been the subject of a debate over whether it was a fake or a “photomontage.”

“The person with his arm around you is Arnulfo Valle?” the prosecutor asked.

Mr. Hernández replied: “Sir, I do not know Mr. Arnulfo Valle.”

During his political career as a member of the right-wing Honduran National Party, Mr. Hernández was seen as adept at amassing power and willing to use it, sometimes bluntly.

When the Supreme Court rejected laws he pushed through while president of the Honduran Congress, Congress simply replaced four justices. Later, the Supreme Court changed the rules to allow Mr. Hernández to serve a second term as president of Honduras.

Political opponents alleged that the presidential elections Hernández won in 2013 and 2017 were marred by fraud. Prosecutors in New York said he financed both with drug money. Distrust of the 2017 election results led to protests blocking roads and bridges.

Prosecutors said Mr. Hernández gave money to a political party colleague who paid gang members to commit violence, and that protesters died in clashes with security forces that followed.

By the time his second term ended, Mr. Hernández was deeply unpopular. His government had failed to reduce crime or create a healthy economy, which in part led to migration from Honduras. His successor as president, Xiomara Castro, accused Mr. Hernández of turning the country into a “narco-dictatorship.” Thousands of Hondurans celebrated when he was extradited to New York.

On Tuesday, Mr. Hernández portrayed himself as a loyal partner of American officials in their fight to stem the flow of drugs across the country’s southern border. He said he had had several meetings about this with U.S. officials, including Gen. John Kelly, then commander of the U.S. Army’s Southern Command.

“I asked General Kelly to help us in our fight against drug trafficking,” Mr. Hernández said, adding: “The Southern Command helped us create an elite force that we called the Tigers.”

As Mr. Hernández was questioned, onlookers in the overflow room were more animated than those who had watched in the courtroom. At times, laughter filled the room, including when Mr. Hernández expressed surprise at the World Cup photo showing him with Mr. Valle.

After the trial ended, Mr. Hernández buttoned his suit jacket, rose from the witness stand and was led back by a federal marshal to the seat at the defense table he had occupied since the beginning of the trial.

Desperate to get sober, Gazza admits he is now a ‘sad drunk’ who drinks ‘indoors’ instead of going out.

He told Jake Humprey’s High Performance Podcast: “People know Paul Gascoigne, but Gazza, nobody knows. Even me sometimes.

“If I’m really down, I grab a drink to cheer myself up.”

The Gateshead-born midfielder is regarded as one of the greatest footballers of his generation and played 57 times for England.

His most iconic moment came in Italia ’90, when he cried after being shown a yellow minute before England’s World Cup semi-final defeat on penalties against West Germany.

But it was after the ex-Newcastle and Rangers legend’s retirement in 2004 that his life spiraled out of control.

He explained: “The drinking side of it became more apparent when I finished playing. I don’t think I let any managers down, or the players or the fans, you know.”

Gazza’s battle with alcohol has seen him jailed or sectioned repeatedly over the years.

These include offenses of drink driving and drunk and disorderly conduct.

He entered rehab for a seventh time in 2014 for alcohol addiction and attended a £6,000-a-month clinic in Southampton.

Roy Keane told Paul Gascoigne ‘Gazza, stop it’ after England legend mocked Man Utd icon over his ‘wife’

At worst, he spent £20,000 having anti-drinking pellets put into his stomach to try to stop drinking.

In a 2021 interview, he admitted that he will “always be an alcoholic.”

Gazza’s demons have occasionally seen him seek help from Alcoholics Anonymous, which he says he recently started visiting again.

The father-of-three, who admitted violence against first wife Sheryl, now lives at the home of constable Katie Davies in Poole, Dorset.

He explained: “I called Katie in November a few years ago, crying.

“What I did to myself and other people, prison and rehab: taking cocaine off the toilet seat.”

Gascoigne says he now drinks six cups of coffee at 10am and barely watches football because he misses it too much.

But it hasn’t all been plain sailing as cruel neighbors are said to have left gin bottles on Katie’s doorstep in a bid to seduce Gazza.

He added: “I think I’ll give in when I’m in a wooden box.

“Apart from that, I’ll keep fighting.”

The unusual contraband is selling for hundreds of dollars on Craigslist and Facebook: canisters of a banned refrigerant, for use in outdated refrigerators and air conditioners, that is also a potent planet-warming gas.

On Monday, a California man was the first in the country to be arrested and charged with smuggling powerful gases into the United States, a felony. according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California.

Michael Hart, 58, of San Diego, is accused of purchasing coolants in Mexico and smuggling them across the border in his vehicle, concealing the canisters under a tarp and tools. Mr. Hart then posted the refrigerants for sale on OfferUp, Facebook Marketplace and other sites and sold them for a profit, federal agents say.

Mr. Hart pleaded not guilty. He is charged with conspiracy, importation in violation of the law and sale of goods imported in violation of the law. Attempts to reach lawyers for Mr. Hart were unsuccessful.

“This is the first time the Department of Justice has prosecuted someone for illegally importing greenhouse gases, and it will not be the last,” Tara McGrath, a U.S. attorney, said in a statement. “We are using every means necessary to protect our planet from the damage caused by toxic pollutants, including pursuing criminal charges.”

The refrigerant gases in question, called hydrofluorocarbons or HFCs, were used in the 1990s to replace another type of refrigerant that was depleting the ozone layer, the part of Earth’s atmosphere that protects life from harmful parts of solar radiation. But scientists found that HFCs can warm the planet hundreds or even thousands of times as much as carbon dioxide, causing climate change.

to land 2016 agreed to begin phasing out HFCs, and since 2020, the United States as well has banned imports of the coolant without permission. Domestic HFC production is also being phased out.

But environmental regulators and researchers have been warning for years about the illegal global trade in HFCs, which are used to keep older refrigeration and air conditioning systems running. They are also used in foam insulation, fire suppression systems and aerosol cans.

In 2019 and 2020, authorities in the European Union, which began phasing out HFCs almost a decade ago, more recovered then 250 tons of illegal HFCs in nearly 600 seizures in 24 countries.

In the United States, there are many advertisements offering bus HFC refrigerants, as well as the older type of coolant, chlorofluorocarbons, or HCFCs.

“Partial 10 lb can of R22 refrigerant,” read a recent ad on Craigslist in Severna Park, Maryland, referring to a refrigerant also known as HCFC-22, once a common refrigerant in residential and commercial air conditioning that is now heavily taxed . limited. “$200 cash only.”

Mr. Hart’s indictment alleged that he also imported HCFC-22. Most of the world agreed to phase out the use of HCFCs a milestone 1987 agreement.

Conspiracy charges carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The other two charges Mr. Hart faces carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

David M. Uhlmann, chief enforcement officer at the Environmental Protection Agency, said in a statement that the illegal smuggling of these gases “undermines international efforts to combat climate change.”

“Anyone who seeks to profit from illegal actions that worsen climate change must be held accountable,” he said.

Anna Parker found the image online: a teal onesie with a handwritten note on the front. “One day,” it said.

It was a word Mrs. Parker kept repeating to herself. She and her husband have been trying to have a second child for four years and are now undergoing in vitro fertilization. She posted the photo on her Facebook page in January, along with a message about her weight, the highest weight since her first pregnancy. Her blood sugar levels were also disturbingly high.

“I’m scared of getting pregnant,” she wrote in the Facebook post. “I’m so afraid that I will have a miscarriage due to unhealthy living.”

Ms. Parker, 38, wrote in the post that she had just started taking a new diabetes drug, Mounjaro, which is also widely used for weight loss. She felt “miserable” after her first few doses, Ms. Parker said in an interview. She was recently cleaning out her 5-year-old son’s lunchbox, and the smell of ketchup from his dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets made her throw up in the sink.

Doctors say they are seeing more and more women like Ms. Parker trying weight-loss medications in hopes of having a healthy pregnancy, or getting pregnant at all. Obese women are sometimes advised to lose weight before pregnancy, as research shows that excess weight can make it more difficult to conceive and increase the risk of miscarriage and pregnancy complications.

For patients taking these medications, the side effects are just one challenge. What some say they find more alarming is how little information there is about the risks of taking these medications before or during pregnancy. Because there is virtually no data on Mounjaro, Ozempic, and similar medications during pregnancy, doctors typically recommend women stop taking them at least two months before trying to conceive.

This leaves women with a narrow window: stay on the drugs long enough to see results, but not so long that they could endanger a fetus.

For “a journey as unpredictable and individualized as fertility,” that can be extremely difficult to navigate, said Dr. Akua Nuako, a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital who focused on anti-obesity and weight-loss medications.

Although some patients hope that these medications can help them become pregnant, they do unclear but whether weight loss always makes it easier to get pregnant. In theory, the body ovulates most regularly and reliably when a person is not overweight or underweight, says Dr. Jessica Chan, a reproductive endocrinologist at Cedars-Sinai.

That’s one reason fertility doctors and clinics sometimes advise patients to lose weight. Some clinics won’t even treat patients with a body mass index of more than 40. Weight-loss medications can be a valuable tool especially for these patients, fertility doctors say. Researchers are also investigating whether these drugs can help women with polycystic ovary syndrome, a leading cause of infertility that leads to irregular periods and is more common in obese women.

“I advise patients, especially if they are not using birth control, that weight loss, especially if there is a significant amount of weight loss, can improve ovulation,” says Dr. Sarah Lassey, physician of maternal fetal medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. . She said she has consulted with more than 100 patients who are taking weight-loss medications and trying to plan a pregnancy.

Part of the appeal to patients like Ms. Parker is the speed at which these drugs can work. For women aged 35 and over, who already have a greater chance of becoming pregnant, that promise can be particularly attractive.

“My husband and I are not getting any younger,” Mrs. Parker said. “So I have to do this quickly.”

And there are the risks of what Ms. Parker sees as an alternative: starting a pregnancy with excess weight or high blood sugar.

While many miscarriages are the result of… chromosomal abnormalitieswomen with uncontrolled diabetes are at higher risk miscarriage. They also develop more often preeclampsia or has a premature birth. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that providers encourage obese women to lose weight before pregnancy. Studies have suggested a link between obesity and an increased risk of birth defects, stillbirth, premature birth and other concerns, said Dr. Andrea Shields, the vice chair of the organization’s clinical guidelines committee for obstetric care.

It is not clear whether obesity directly causes these problems, or whether other lifestyle factors or health problems, such as diabetes, may play a role.

The conversation around weight, fertility and pregnancy is “already complicated and stigmatized,” says Dr. Nuako, the physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. These medications, she said, only add “an extra level of difficulty.”

When a nurse prescribed Mounjaro to Marcela Romero in November 2022 to lower her blood sugar levels, she balked at the idea of taking a “diet pill,” she said. But Ms. Romero had been trying to get pregnant for three years. She was planning to start in vitro fertilization and was concerned about her weight and risk of gestational diabetes.

At Mounjaro, she stopped thinking about food, lost five pounds in a month and saw her blood sugar levels drop. But she also felt a change in her body that she couldn’t place. Hours after injecting her fourth weekly dose, she took a pregnancy test. When two pink lines appeared, she ran down the stairs of her home in Fort Myers, Florida, and held it up to her father, who was visiting from Colombia. He started crying on the spot.

Ms. Romero was excited but also terrified that she had taken Mounjaro while pregnant. “My first thought was, this is great and all, but do we know if there are any complications during pregnancy? Are there defects that children are born with?” she said. She immediately stopped taking the drug.

She tried not to worry. But she couldn’t shake the fear and found little to ease her worries.

“Obviously there’s no information because it’s so new,” she said.

As in many clinical trials, studies of these drugs excluded women who were pregnant. The companies that make these drugs have said they plan to monitor pregnancy outcomes. One of the few human studies so far, it has been found that women with type 2 diabetes who took these drugs when they became pregnant or during early pregnancy were at no greater risk of having babies with serious birth defects than those who took insulin.

But animal studies have suggested that the drugs can harm a fetus. This is especially concerning if people use the drugs without realizing they are pregnant. And experts also noted that some of these drugs – particularly Mounjaro and the weight-loss drug Zepbound, which contain the same substance – can also make the birth control pill less effective at certain points. in the dosing schedule.

Until more human research comes along, Dr. Shields said, “we’re all just holding our breath.”

Ms. Parker plans to stay at Mounjaro long enough to lose 40 pounds, she said, and then undergo the embryo implantation. Still, she worries about the possible long-term effects of the medication on her body. “It’s a little concerning,” she said. “You think, ‘Is this just the 90s, where we take diet pills that you get at the gas station?'”

Some doctors also said they were concerned about what might happen in the period between patients stopping these drugs and becoming pregnant. Patients often regain weight after stopping the medications and may eventually enter a weight cycle, a term doctors use for weight fluctuations can strain the cardiovascular system.

For patients, every choice during pregnancy can feel like a risk. Mrs. Romero felt like she had reached a point where she could no longer physically control all her worries. “I thought, I’m going to trust the universe,” she said. “It is what it is. Because right now there’s nothing I can do, right?”

In September she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Ms. Parker sometimes finds herself searching Facebook posts of other women who have become pregnant after taking these medications. With so little data to look at, all she has are these anecdotes. “Maybe the weight loss outweighs the downsides,” she said. “But I don’t know if we know the disadvantages yet.”

She once described herself a ‘little girl from Croydon with a dream’ – and at last night’s Brit Awards, they all seemed to finally come true for Raye.

The singer-songwriter, 26, from South London, made Brit Award history when she scooped six accolades in one night – beating records set by Blur, Harry Styles and Adele.

Raye, whose full name is Rachel Agatha Keen, won Best New Artist, Songwriter of the Year, Song of the Year, Best R&B Act, Artist of the Year and Mastercard’s Album of the Year.

For the final award, the star – who was forced to release her music independently after being restricted by a previous record label – was in floods of tears as she was joined by her grandmother on stage.

She said: ‘You just don’t understand what this means to me. I’m ugly crying on national television.

Pictured: Raye seen hugging her emotional grandmother Agatha Dawson as she wins Album of the Year at last night’s BRIT Awards

‘All I ever wanted to be was an artist, and now I’m an artist with an album of the year. Thank you so much, this is too much – come on Grandma, let’s go.’

As a teenager, Raye attended BRIT school for two years before then dropping out because she ‘hated being told how to write a song’.

When she was 17-year-old, the rising star was assaulted by a music producer – and revealed how she turned to alcohol and drugs to cope.

Since then, Raye has appointed her father as her manager while she also works closely with her sister.

In June 2021, Raye revealed that her record label, Polydor Records, had been withholding her debut album for several years – forcing her to then release her music independently.

Here FEMAIL delves into Raye’s incredible rise to fame and her remarkable musical comeback.

South London upbringing and dropping out of school

Rachel Keen was born in Tooting to a Ghanaian-Swiss mother and English father and was one of three daughters.

When Raye was still a child, the family relocated to Croydon – where she attended Woodcote High School.

In an interview with F Word magazine, Raye said Croydon was a ‘really great place to grow up’.

She explained: ‘[It is] very down to earth, very multi-cultured, very fun, really great. I grew up in the church as well, so I go to church every Sunday with the family.

‘That’s where I learnt how to sing and understand my love for music.’

When she was 14 years old, Raye was accepted into Brit School – whose alumnae include Adele, Ella Eyre, Jessie J and Leona Lewis.

Speaking to The Times earlier this month, Raye explained how she dropped out of the school after two years because she ‘hated’ being told how to write a song.

She said: ‘It’s not in my nature to follow rules. I didn’t get on with them in school and I don’t understand why they even exist in music.

‘I love songs that don’t do what you expect them to. For me it’s liberating to write something sonically different every time that doesn’t sound like anyone else. Otherwise, what’s the point?’

What’s more, the star also told the BBC that she felt ‘confined’ as a student at Brit school – as other students were all ‘cool, underground, indie artists’.

Bagging first record deal

When she was 16 years old, radio host Clara Amfo played Raye’s music on her show for the first time.

The following year, she signed a four-album deal with the record label Polydor.

In 2017, she was shortlisted for the BBC Music Sound of… award and came in third place.

After this, she won at the ASCAP London Music Awards and was nominated for a BRIT award for her You Don’t Know Me single in 2018.

Around this time, Raye was assaulted by a music producer – who forced his hand between her legs when she was 17 years old.

Whilst performing on the Pyramid Stage last year at Glastonbury she paused between singing the song saying: ‘This next song is about sexual abuse, and rape, and sexual violence. And I know that’s heavy, okay.

‘But I also know one in four men and women will experience that in their lifetime. So I know that I’m not alone when I sing this today.’

In an interview with Cosmopolitan last year, she said she still suffers from panic attacks and PTSD regularly.

‘When I think about the panic attacks, the PTSD…you realise that someone’s actions become your burden to carry, and there is nowhere you can put it other than a therapy session,’ she said.

‘Every girl I know in this industry has some sort of story to tell me. The studio is such a vulnerable space.

‘And if you say something, you create an enemy who will spread rumours or blacklist you – and you need those connections to open doors for yourself.

‘Even though the people decide very much what’s consumed on the outside, inside, the music industry is still very much a gatekept society.’

Despite the buzz around her music and her regular appearances at festivals, Raye’s debut album never materialised – as she later revealed she was in a stand-off with her record label.

In an emotional interview with Lous Theroux last November 2023, Raye revealed that she was ‘constantly in some kind of sedation’ when she first started her career.

During the television interview, Raye said all she wanted was to be ‘in control of her life’ as she discussed her frustration with her old label Polydor for not allowing her to release an album.

During the conversation, Raye admitted to taking ‘codine’ and ‘MDMA’ as she ‘reached her limit’ and had ‘nothing left to lose’.

She said: ‘I think I wasn’t able to get along with my career because I was just constantly in some form of sedation just to get along with it. Whether it be weed or other things which I write about on my album.

‘This is the thing, when I became sober, I realised, wow, I can’t do this sober. Like, this is deep. It’s actually deep.

‘It’s so deep what I’d realized I’d actually been doing to myself as a person to try and be somebody that they wanted me to be.

‘And it’s so sad. So I just got into that point where I was just like, “What is my life right now?” “What is the point?”

‘Yeah, so I just was at a point where I just had nothing left to lose. Yeah, so I was just like, “F*** it.” I’ve absolutely reached my limit.’

Raye says she reached breaking point when her label would not let her release an album – which led to her venting her frustrations on social media.

She continued: ‘But that is how far you push me. They either listen to me now, listen to their artists in pain, or we part ways, and they can save themselves this headache because I’m about to make it a headache.’

After Raye started giving interviews about her label not allowing her to release her debut album, she was able to part ways with Polydor in 2021.

The singer touches on substance abuse, assault and sexual violence and anxiety in her lyrics, and previously explained why she didn’t want to shy away from ‘difficult’ topics.

She told MailOnline: ‘I just want to be a woman discussing uncomfortable topics that we don’t talk about, these are all things I battled with in the darkness and in silence.

‘You hope in writing about these songs and putting them out into the world, you just hope that people hear them, and and relate to them also.

‘It’s very much medicine in a way that you have a different feeling to to put quite a painful emotion to it.

‘For me is just very empowering, and I hope it can be medicine for anyone else who who needs it.’

During her interview with F Word magazine, Raye revealed that her dad is her manager while she also works closely with her sister. One of her younger sister has also had music featured in a Target advert in the US.

Raye added: ‘Music is in all our genes. Mum is the next one, she’s taking some of the workload with Dad. She’s worked in the NHS all her life so she is the next, hopefully in a year or two she will be able to join the team and it’ll be a full family empire.’

TikTok support

In January 2023, Raye’s single ‘Escapism’ went to UK number one and became a huge hit on TikTok. The single now has been used in over 700,000 videos on the social media platform.

The star partnered up with TikTok for the launch of their #ElectronicMusic campaign in September and her single Call on Me was also named the platform’s Song of the Summer in 2021.

Speaking to Cosmo Middle East, Raye explained how she never expected to gain such success on TikTok.

She said: ‘I think my sister pointed it out [it was blowing up on TikTok]. I checked, and it had like 1000 videos made to the sound.

‘I was like “oh that’s exciting!” and then the next day it was 2000 and it just kept doubling out of nowhere and I was like “wow!”

‘It’s the kind of thing you can’t plan. You can’t be like “Okay I’m gonna have a viral hit”. You know, it just doesn’t work like that. I’m just grateful that TikTok was like “Yeah we like that. Let’s make so many videos to it”. I was very overwhelmed.’

Despite her music’s sudden surge in popularity, Raye told The Times she does her own makeup and hair while on tour.

She also bought a house in Streatham, South-West London two years and continues living with her two sisters.

 Career-defining turnaround at BRITs

Raye’s incredible sweep at the Brits last night marks one of the music industry’s greatest ever comebacks – just three years after Polydor refused to release any of her albums.

This led to Raye leaving the company and releasing her critically acclaimed, and now award winning, debut My 21st Century Blues as an independent artist.

The singer/songwriter scooped the Song of the year award for her hit Escapism ft 070 Shake, shortly before also taking home the R&B Act gong and Best New Artist.

The 26-year-old has been shortlisted in seven categories - the most by any artist in one year- including two separate nods in the Song of the Year category for 'Prada' and 'Escapism'

‘I’m shaking. I don’t really know what to say right now, but… thank you. I’ve always dreamed of saying that,’ she said as the reached the podium to accept her first award of the night.

Referencing her new beginning in her Best New Artist Speech, Raye said: ”I have to thank my mum and my dad who are also part of my team, and my grandma. Yes grandma! I, in ways, do feel like a new artist. I released my first song when I was 15, my first mixtape when I was 16, don’t go and listen to it because it’s not that good any more.

‘But I do feel like a new artist, I got to start again. The artist I was three years ago would not believe what she’s seeing today. I’m my own boss now, I’m in control. Thank you!’

She also scooped the first ever BRIT Award for R&B act, which is voted for by the public via Instagram and is a new standalone genre category after musicians and fans complained about R&B being conjoined with the pop last year.

Raye acknowledged the the uproar in her speech, telling the crowd: ‘Look I just wanna say, when I was about 16, 15 years old, I wanted to be an R&B artist, that’s what I would say. And I was told, I think, a lie that R&B doesn’t sell in the UK so I needed to learn how to make different kinds of music.’

‘I know that’s a bit shady but I need to say R&B is so important and there are so many R&B artists in the UK eating it up. I wanna shout out to Mahalia, who campaigned for this award, Cleo Sol, who’s immaculate, Sault. This really is a lot – thank you.’

Raye also won Songwriter of the Year, which was announced ahead of the live ceremony, with host Clara Amfo handing her the gong in a surprise moment after her Best New Artist win.

Clara – who gave Raye her first ever radio play – told the star: ‘There is no such thing as an overnight success, I am so proud of you.’

Three years ago, when Oregon voters approved a landmark plan to decriminalize hard drugs, advocates seeking to end the incarceration of drug users believed they were on the brink of a revolution that would soon spread across the country.

But even as the state’s landmark law took effect in 2021, the scourge of fentanyl increased. Overdoses soared as the state stumbled in its efforts to fund improved treatment programs. And while many other city centers emerged from the dark days of the pandemic, Portland continued to struggle, with scenes of drugs and despair.

Lately, even some liberal politicians who had embraced a new approach to drugs have supported an end to the experiment. On Friday, a bill that would reimpose criminal penalties for possession of certain drugs passed the state Legislature, joining Gov. Tina Kotek, who has expressed alarm about open drug use and helped craft a plan to prohibit such activities.

“It’s clear that we have to do something to try to adjust what’s happening in our communities,” Sen. Chris Gorsek, a Democrat who had supported decriminalization, said in an interview. Soon after, senators took the floor, with some telling stories about the impact of addiction and overdoses on their own loved ones. They passed the measure by a margin of 21-8.

The abrupt rollback is a devastating turn for decriminalization advocates, who say the high number of overdose deaths stems from a confluence of factors and failures largely unrelated to the law. They have warned of a return to a “war on drugs” strategy and urged the Legislature to invest in affordable housing and drug treatment options instead.

“This Legislature has not passed any real solutions,” said Sandy Chung, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon. “This is about politics and political theater.”

In recent decades, states across the country have taken steps to legalize medical and recreational marijuana. But no state other than Oregon had moved to eliminate criminal penalties for possession of hard drugs like fentanyl, heroin and methamphetamine.

Oregon’s decriminalization initiative, known as Measure 110, was driven by growing concerns that drug laws disproportionately incarcerate people of color and punish those in need of addiction treatment. Under the measure, which was approved by 58 percent of voters, people found in possession of small amounts of hard drugs would face a $100 fine, which could be avoided by completing a health assessment.

But when law enforcement began handing out tickets, officials found that few people opted for a health assessment, and the state stumbled in distributing funds to expand the availability of treatment options.

Meanwhile, fentanyl flooded the region. In downtown Portland, streets already barren due to the pandemic felt threatening, with people openly using drugs or expressing themselves in crisis.

Overdose deaths skyrocketed. From September 2022 to September 2023, deaths in the state rose by an estimated 42 percent – the highest increase in the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (The death rate nationwide is up 2 percent.) Since the beginning of 2020, Portland’s Multnomah County has recorded more overdose deaths than Covid-19 deaths.

Decriminalization advocates pointed to research showing no link between the law changes and rising overdose deaths the first year of implementation. Instead, they argued, the crisis was rooted in the abundance of fentanyl, a lack of social services, the lingering effects of the pandemic and, especially in Portland, widespread homelessness, all factors that appeared to exacerbate dangerous drug use.

But the tide of public opinion was already turning.

The Drug Policy Alliance, a nonprofit that spent millions in support of the 2020 decriminalization effort, envisioned Measure 110 as the start of a series of similar campaigns in states such as Washington, Vermont, Maine and California.

But over time, and as images of public drug use and widespread deaths continued to emerge from Portland, Washington state’s initiative stalled and failed to make it onto the ballot. Also, no other state has proposed a decriminalization plan. On the contrary, California could vote this year on an initiative that would increase penalties for drug possession and trafficking. Had Oregon lawmakers not introduced the bill Friday, a proposed new ballot initiative — backed in part by Nike co-founder Phil Knight — would have sought to recriminalize drugs.

“For me, it has been incredibly frustrating to have this momentum on our side and then have these external factors change the winds so significantly,” said Lindsay LaSalle, director of policy at the Drug Policy Alliance.

The debate in the House of Representatives this week became emotional at times, as lawmakers shared stories of addiction and fatal overdoses in their own families. The measure passed the House of Representatives by a wide margin on Thursday, although some Republicans opposed it as still too lenient on drug users, and some Democrats expressed other concerns.

“It is an unacceptable compromise that we know will have disparities that impact Oregonians of color,” said Jennifer Parrish Taylor, director of advocacy and public policy at the Urban League of Portland.

The plan approved by lawmakers creates a new offense of possession, which could result in jail sentences of up to 180 days. But the language focuses on a range of cases that lawmakers hope will fall out of the criminal justice system.

The measure encourages the expansion of local programs so law enforcement can choose to take someone directly to a treatment provider instead of to jail. Those who do go through the courts can request probation and full treatment to have the charges dismissed. Those who do not complete treatment may be sentenced to a longer probation period. If that fails, the person could be sentenced to 30 days in jail instead, which could focus on treatment. Further violations may result in a longer prison sentence, with the possibility of parole for treatment.

Lawmakers have added a range of other measures, including funding for mental health and substance abuse programs and policies that make it easier for people to access withdrawal medications.

Kate Lieber, the Democratic majority leader in the Senate and a key architect of the new plans, said the approach is unique — the result of difficult negotiations between Republicans who wanted to reinstate penalties and Democrats who wanted to prioritize treatment.

“I cannot emphasize enough: doing nothing is not an option,” Ms. Lieber told her colleagues on Friday, urging them to support the changes. “Our current response to the drug crisis is not working.”

Several prominent Democrats have expressed support for a rollback, including Mike Schmidt, a progressive prosecutor in the Portland area. After the decriminalization initiative passed in 2020, Mr. Schmidt implemented its provisions early, saying it was time to move past “failed practices” and “focus our limited law enforcement resources on high-level commercial drug crimes.”

But he has reassessed his position, he said in an interview this week. The proliferation of fentanyl requires a new approach that treats addiction as a health problem while holding people accountable, he said. Open drug use downtown and near parks and schools makes people feel unsafe, Mr. Schmidt said.

“We’ve been hearing from constituents for a while that this has been really harmful to our community and to our streets,” he said.

Mr. Schmidt said the new bill still prioritizes treatment and uses prison as a last resort. That, he said, could eventually become the model Oregon offers to states across the country.
