And finally, there are the heat waves: weeks of hellish temperatures that literally mean death for residents of Western states who spend too much time outside. “The places in the world where we think we can live now,” explains Abraham Lustgarten in “On the Move,” his fascinating new look at the population changes caused by the climate crisis, “will not be the same as the places where we will live. can live in the future.”

Now that TikTok is under fire, brands that rely on it are worried

Amid the debate in Washington over whether TikTok should be banned if its Chinese owner doesn’t sell it, one group is watching with particular interest: the many brands – especially in the beauty, skin care, fashion, and health and wellness industries – they used the video app to increase their turnover.

Youthforia, a makeup brand with over 185,000 followers on TikTok, is considering moving more marketing to other platforms, such as YouTube and Instagram. Underlinings, from popular brand Nailboo, planned to launch a product with TikTok at a major retailer in August and is now wondering whether it should change course. TikTok is “just too big, especially in the beauty industry and in certain sectors, I think, to go away,” said Yaso Murray, BeautyStat’s chief marketing officer.

Companies and creators have known for years that TikTok could be in danger. But those fears seem more real now that the House of Representatives has passed a bill that would ban TikTok in the United States unless its owner, ByteDance, sells it. Some lawmakers in Washington believe TikTok is a platform for Chinese government espionage. Parents worry it will rot their children’s brains. But many companies – big and small – credit TikTok and its group of influencers for bringing their products to potential customers, especially young ones.

Retailers, whether Sephora, Walmart, Target or Amazon, have also been big beneficiaries of TikTok, says Razvan Romanescu, CEO and co-founder of Underlinings and 10PM Curfew, a company that connects content creators with brands.

“When something goes viral on TikTok, they sell out,” Romanescu said. “So I feel like the whole ecosystem is powered by the discoverability that TikTok provided.”

For some brands, TikTok has become an integral part of marketing strategy and revenue growth. This is partly because the short videos are easily digestible for consumers and partly because marketing on the platform is relatively cheap for smaller brands. TikTok Shop, which launched last year and allows shoppers to purchase products directly through the app, has become especially popular among beauty and fashion brands.

“Before Covid, the beauty category was quite flat and growing maybe a few percentage points per year,” says Anna Mayo, vice president of beauty and personal care at research firm NIQ. But during the pandemic, as consumers had more time on their hands and Zoom calls became more popular, TikTok’s beauty and skincare videos exploded.

“Since then it has been all about growth in the beauty industry and it has not slowed down,” Ms Mayo said. “TikTok is a major driver of that growth.”

New products or clothing can be promoted by individuals who, unlike movie stars or models, feel more recognizable to viewers. The short how-to videos can show you how to best mix and match spring sweaters and jeans, or how to apply toner, serums, moisturizers and sunscreen in a morning skincare routine. Some people say they’re more likely to go to TikTok than Google for shopping.

“For a direct-to-consumer company like ours, the platform is very unique,” says Nadya Okamoto, who started posting TikTok videos about her company’s organic menstrual products, August, in the summer of 2021.

Julie Bundrock’s employer, Domain Residential Northern Beaches, was ordered to pay $862,315 to the owner and four tenants for negligently causing a fire that burned the house to the ground.

A little-known streaming service full of free TV shows and movies has gotten a big boost in its offerings.

Rakuten TV has signed a new agreement with A+E Networks, the company behind channels such as Blaze, Crime & Investigation and Sky History.

This means that a new channel called Deal Masters will be launched on the streaming app, with shows about making extra money.

Hardcore Pawn and Flipping Bangers are among the shows coming, with about 40 series new to free streaming.

Another new station is History Hunters with historians and celebrities including Sir Tony Robinson, Professor Alice Roberts, Dan Jones and Al Murray.

A third offering is the RTV Biography Channel.

A FORMER pub worker is doing the devil’s deeds – after creating Scotland’s hottest sauce.

Former chef Ewen Mackenzie, 50, makes the infernal concoctions under his Mack Chilli label, which he exports around the world.

Red Hot Chilli Fifer, owner of Something Different gift shop in Cowdenbeath, said: “The first thing people often ask me is ‘Where’s the hottest sauce?’

“But with chili it’s not about the heat, it’s about the taste. There are more than four and a half thousand peppers in the world and it would be foolish if they were all hot.

“It’s quite a difficult balance to find what people want and what they can actually handle.

“People try the hottest and finish dancing kind of like idiots because they panic. You’d be surprised how many people I’ve seen cry.”

Ewen named one of his sauces Valhalla, after the location in Norse mythology where Viking warriors killed in battle go.

He adds: “I think some of the people who tried Valhalla are there now.”

Ewen worked in pubs and kitchens for years until he got serious raid left him with major health problems.

Forced to reconsider his futurehe chose to become self-employed and took over a gift shop.

It was during that time that he learned all about hot sauce and realized it was going to be big company. Since launching his own brand in 2021, Ewen has been flogging more than 1,500 bottles a year around the world.

With dozens of different options, there is something for everyone on their sliding scale of heat. His most infamous offering, however, is Angel of Dead.

This extreme seasoning is Scotland’s hottest sauce and contains 90 percent Carolina Reaper – the second hottest chili pepper in the world – with 9 million Scoville extracts.

These units range on a spectrum from zero, meaning no heat at all, to 16 million and higher for pure firework. The measurement is carried out by diluting a pepper extract with sugar water and asking human testers to identify the heat level.

The more water needed to beat the heat, the higher the number of Scoville Heat Units (SHU).

Ewen’s scariest offer amounts to being over a thousand times hotter than even the angriest jalapeño.

It’s no surprise that Mack Chilli has a disclaimer accepting no responsibility for misuse of the product.

Despite his reputation for making some of the world’s most fearsome sauces, Ewen would rather people enjoyed the taste than simply see them as a challenge.

He doesn’t recommend that people throw themselves in at the deep end, but instead advises people to build their tolerance level the right way.

HOT TAKES

I had never tried anything other than Tabasco before visiting Ewen, so the thought of this taste test made me warm under the collar.

And while I was pleasantly surprised by the fruity flavors at the lower end of the spice scale, I’ll leave the extreme options to the masochists with a stomach of steel.

Here is my hot version of chili sauce:

LEAVE THE LIGHT ON (charity bottle, £3 per sale to Andy’s Man Club) BBQ sauce with flavors of cherry, cola and smoked chipotle.

CHIQUILA SUNRISE A tasty, fruity sauce with notes of strawberry and plum. Goes very well with game meat.

TROPICAL TEMPTATION This is truly tropical with hints of mango, peach and orange and a moderate burn.

CELTIC GHOST With a serious kick it’s still tasty, with flavors of mango that can shine.

ANGEL OF DEATH This will blow your mind: it has fruits like cranberry and orange in it, but all you feel is the burn.

Ewen adds: “If you can tolerate the heat, that’s fine, but for a beginner I would avoid anything that is too much.

“Start with jalapeño and don’t go straight in and don’t go too far because you’ll hurt yourself and throw yourself off.

“I’ll take my sauce to the pub and see if they can take it.”

Ewen jokes, “They ask me if I’m trying to kill them.

“There was a man who thought he could handle the heat, but he couldn’t finish his pint and had to go At home.

“Many schoolchildren like it. And girls seem to have a higher tolerance than the boys.
