After months of facials, touch-ups, juice cleanses, makeup mishaps, hair prep, intensive Ozempic jabs and heated debates with stressed-out stylists, you might imagine that when the curtain fell on Sunday night, guests at the 96th Academy Awards ceremony would have their goody bags packed and left, glad they had fallen in a heap on their bed.

However, that would have been a missed opportunity.

Because it’s at the after-parties that the stars get the chance to shine with a different kind of shine than required on the Oscars red carpet. And this year it was clearer than ever.

To be successful, Oscar appearances require a very specific dress code – one that respects Hollywood traditions. Dresses are often long, elegant and classic, decorated with embroidery, beads and sequins. Rarely are the fabrics simple prints: that would be considered too ‘daytime’.

For men, the classic black tuxedo is the go-to look.

That’s why the afterparties are so much fun for many guests – and not just because of the free bar. Just as a bride might swap her wedding dress for an outfit better suited for dancing at the reception, Hollywood’s A-list sheds its glamorous skin and dons something more comfortable. Or, if not more comfortable, then certainly something more experimental and striking.

Of all the post-show events, the Vanity Fair Oscar Party is by far the hottest ticket, and never more so than this year, when it celebrated its 30th year.

Billed by the magazine as “the city’s most lavish, decadent, impossible-to-crash soiree – a fantasy canteen of Hollywood’s megawatt stars getting smashed together in a bar,” it offered guests the perfect chance to flex their fashion muscles .

No matter how exhausted they were, as long as there was still breath in their bodies, they continued to party – always in dresses that the Oscars would not tolerate.

Leading the charge was Margot Robbie, wearing a beaded gold Thierry Mugler corset that would have been displayed on the red carpet, with inevitable cries of “Where’s your skirt?”

Making waves: Lupita Nyong’o – in Armani Prive dresses – topped off her later appearance with halo-style hair

Worn with a brown satin scarf, the look, from Mugler’s Spring/Summer 1996 collection, was perfect for Vanity Fair.

In contrast, Robbie’s Oscar look was a long, black column dress with sequins from Versace – a more sober choice than expected, as she has spent the duration of her promotional activities for Barbie wearing pink variations, all created by various top designers in tribute to her character.

Sheer is a divisive trend that can be missed on the red carpet: it usually comes into its own after dark, when any revelations are made less revealing.

After Charlize Theron chose an elegant silver dress from Christian Dior haute couture for the Oscars, she donned a sheer black dress, also from Dior, with a more casual halter neck bodice and a sheer skirt.

Florence Pugh has long been a fan of plain mash, but wisely avoided it at the Oscars. She also opted not to wear her usual Valentino – despite being the face of the brand – and instead opted for a silver dress with a satin skirt and crystal-embellished bodice from lesser-known label Del Core.

A daring dresser, she still couldn’t resist incorporating a ‘talking point’ – this time in the form of straps that seemed to float above her shoulders.

By evening, Florence was back on her nipple-freeing mission, wearing a sheer cream dress with strategically placed embroidery across the bust, designed by Simone Rocha x Jean Paul Gaultier.

Emma Stone is another fan of sheer. As a brand ambassador for the house, it was a given that the Oscar-winning actress would be dressed in Louis Vuitton for the ceremony and, apart from a zipper malfunction on stage, her light mint green dress with an exaggerated peplum waist was perfect. .

For the Vanity Fair party, she wore a less streamlined Vuitton dress with silver embellishments, which subtly exposed her bra. While the asymmetrical hem might have caused a shock at the Oscars, it worked well for a post-awards celebration.

But there were countless ways to stand out other than wearing sheer. After opting for an understated powder blue, feather-trimmed dress from Armani Prive at the Oscars, actress Lupita Nyong’o looked ready to party in a halterneck sequin column dress, also from Armani Prive.

Even her hair looked cheerful, done up in halo-like sculptural swirls. Anya Taylor-Joy was another participant whose hair was a topic of conversation. At the Oscars, her Christian Dior corset dress was styled with a simple center parting that didn’t compete with the dress’s complex fishscale embroidery.

At the Vanity Fair afterparty, her hair took center stage, thanks to a jewel-encrusted headpiece, worn with a black round-front minidress from South Korean couture brand Miss Sohee.

For some, however, the afterparty seemed more of an opportunity to sober up than to dress up.

Emily Blunt’s soft peach Dolce & Gabbana dress was a much more traditional choice than the Schiaparelli dress she wore to the Oscars. Beaded at the cross in the unmistakable shape of a pair of Y-fronts, the dress may have embodied Schiaparelli’s long affinity with surrealism, but some fashion enthusiasts thought it was a joke that went too far for the Academy Awards.

Jennifer Lawrence was another guest who many thought mixed up her dress code, with her polka dot Christian Dior dress being too casual for the red carpet.

Her white flower-embroidered Givenchy dress, on the other hand, was a subtle, delicate choice for an after-party, whose train was surely destined to leave revelers down three champagnes. Maybe Lawrence, like everyone else, was too cheerful to care.

One thing’s for sure: the real winners in Hollywood today will be the dry cleaners.

It’s awards season and that means one thing: eagle-eyed fashion fans are watching the events as intently as movie buffs.

For some viewers, seeing what the A-listers choose to wear as they strut down the red carpet is just as important as seeing who picked up the gong.

And two actors who get a lot of attention – much of it unwanted – for their ensembles are Florence Pugh and Emily Blunt.

The two theater makers opted for a trend that upset some fashionistas – with one even wondering if their dresses had fallen victim to the dreaded ‘wardrobe malfunction’.

And the feature in question is “floating straps,” a design where the stars wore dresses with the shoulder straps placed several inches above their shoulders instead of resting on top.

The big winners of the evening were Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy, Emma Stone, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Robert Downey Jr.

Best Supporting Actress nominee Emily Blunt may not have won her category, but she did appear on several best-dressed lists, thanks to her champagne-colored, beaded Schiaparelli dress with floating shoulders.

Stylist Jessica Paster, who helped Emily choose the dress, shared Vanity fair: ‘Did I know that people started talking over their shoulders? Absolute. Do I care what anyone else has to say? Absolutely not.’

Jessica added: ‘At the end of the day she looked absolutely beautiful. It was such a beautiful dress.’

She also noted that she was surprised to see Florence Pugh wearing a similar detail on her silver Del Core dress, as she “thought” [Blunt] would be the first to wear it [the floating shoulder]’.

While the stylist may have liked the details, it was surprisingly controversial among some viewers, who shared their negative thoughts on social media.

One Instagrammer said: ‘I thought it was a wardrobe malfunction.’

And an X user (formerly Twitter) wrote: ‘The floating bands need to go. one of the worst trends in years. I just want to push them all DOWN.”

Another said: ‘Why are Emily Blunt’s dress straps just floating in the air?’

The majority of online fashion watchers seemed to hate the 'floating straps' trend, but some were fans of the new look

In a similar vein, another commenter wrote, “What’s going on with Emily’s top dress straps? They look like they’re floating.’

Meanwhile, another wrote: ‘Apparently there are floating straps in there?’

However, a small minority of viewers seemed to be fans of the trend and shared positive thoughts about the new look.

One wrote: ‘I didn’t know what to think at first… but I love Emily Blunt and Flo Pugh’s floating shoulder straps.’

And another added: ‘OMG FLOATING BANDS OF BEAUTIFULNESS. Charlize! I live!’

Additionally, Emily’s figure-hugging sequined Schiaparelli couture gown faced a backlash due to the dress’s quirky, bejeweled Y-front.

Emily’s stylist Jessica Paster took offense to fans who said the girth of the underwear ‘ruined the whole look’ when she shared photos on Instagram.

She replied: ‘because you have absolutely no refined taste.’

When another criticized: ‘I just think this is too cool a dress for her and the glamor didn’t help’, Jessica hit back: ‘I didn’t see you on the red carpet???’.

The cream-colored dress was covered in sequins and had gravity-defying straps, but as Emily walked the red carpet, all viewers could talk about was the beaded outline of a pair of Y-fronts on her dress and the bizarre shoulders.

One wrote: ‘Is Emily Blunt wearing the tight white men’s underwear dress? Yes she is’, while another said: ‘thanks Emily Blunt for bringing back the handball goalkeeper jockstrap’.

Others said: ‘Why does Emily Blunt’s dress have rhinestone fronts?’ and “Emily Blunt’s dress has shopping bag handles for shoulder straps.”

“Emily Blunt wearing that dress makes me miss Joan Rivers and Fashion Police. Joan would have made great jokes.”

‘What’s going on with Emily Blunt’s dress? Miranda Priestly frowns.’

Jessica has been a stylist for over twenty years and has dressed a number of stars, including Eva Longoria, Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Aniston, for major red carpet events such as the Emmys, Golden Globes and the Met Gala.

Cate Blanchett once raved about her when she said, “The great thing about Jessica is [her ability] to inhabit the fashion world and be human and real.”

Emily’s film Oppenheimer won a whopping seven Oscars at Sunday night’s Academy Awards, while rival Barbie won just one.

The two actors weren’t the only ones looking unusual: Also sporting modernist ensembles, Kim Kardashian and Emily Ratajkowski pulled out all the stops for the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty.

Kim opted for a sculptural white satin dress from Balenciaga for the ‘do at the Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills.

However, the 43-year-old mother of four contrasted the ultra-modern dress with a classic cosmetic look.

She styled her hair in waves, stunning in an old Hollywood style, and then finished her look with a smokey eye and nude lip.

Also dressed in a futuristic dress was Emily Ratajkowski, 32, by French fashion label Jacquemus.

Emily posed sideways and showed off the backless gown, which had an unusual asymmetrical bodice.

The bodice tilted slightly to the left and almost seemed to detach from her figure.

The biggest night in British film returned with actor David Tennant as host and an array of guest presenters on hand to deliver awards throughout the night.

Prince William attended the ceremony in London solo as his wife Kate Middleton continues her recovery from last month’s abdominal surgery.

Oppenheimer won Best Film as well as sweeping the board in the major categories at the EE BAFTA Film Awards at The Royal Festival Hall.

The epic biographical thriller led the wins with seven gongs, including Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. It had the most nominations with 13.

Murphy, 47 – who plays the titular role in Nolan’s atomic bomb saga – picked up the prize at the prestigious awards ceremony.

He triumphed against Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, Barry Keoghan for Saltburn and Teo Yoo for Past Lives.

Accepting the trophy, he said: ‘Oh boy, holy moly, thank you very, very much BAFTA.’

He paid tribute to ‘the most dynamic, kindest producer-director partnership in Hollywood: Chris Nolan and Emma Thomas, thank you for seeing something in me that I probably didn’t see in myself.’

The Irish actor said to Nolan: ‘Thank for always pushing me and demanding excellence because that is what you deliver time and time again.’

Nolan also acknowledged his ‘fellow nominees and my Oppenhomies’, adding: ‘I know it’s a cliche to say, but I’m in awe of you.’

He said J Robert Oppenheimer was a ‘colossally knotty character’, adding: ‘We have a space to debate and interrogate and investigate that complexity and it’s a privilege to be a part of this community with you all.

Downey Jr, 58, also collected a BAFTA for his role as Lewis Strauss in the Hollywood blockbuster, which has swept the board during the 2024 awards season.

He admitted he owes the award to Nolan, producer Emma Thomas and leading man Murphy, as well as ‘British influence’.

Gesturing to Nolan, he said: ‘Recently that dude suggested I attempt an understated approach as a last ditch effort to resurrect my dwindling credibility.’

Downey Jr’s win set a new record for the longest gap between wins by any performer as it comes 31 years after his previous BAFTA, for the 1993 film Chaplin.

The previous record was 27 years, set by Sir Anthony Hopkins in 2021 when he won the award for best actor for The Father, nearly three decades after his 1994 win for Shadowlands.

Nolan won the Best Director BAFTA for Oppenheimer, his epic tale of how the nuclear bomb was created.

Before accepting the award from actor Hugh Grant, Nolan hugged Murphy.

Nolan joked that his brother ‘beat him up here’ by being in a chorus of a production 40 years ago.

Nolan has previously lost out despite numerous commercial successes such as Inception and The Dark Knight, the UK-born filmmaker won out against Jonathan Glazer [The Zone of Interest], Justine Triet [Anatomy of a Fall], Alexander Payne [The Holdovers], Bradley Cooper [Maestro] and Andrew Haigh [All of Us Strangers].

He paid tribute to Murphy and added to those who backed the film: ‘Thank you for taking on something dark’.

The director also acknowledged the efforts of nuclear disarmament organisations to bring peace.

Oppenheimer swept up in the big name categories, but it was closely followed by the surreal black comedy Poor Things.

It marked five awards for the film, as Emma Stone collected the Best Actress gong for her turn as Bella Baxter.

Accepting her award, she said: ‘Since we’re in London, I want to start by thanking dialect coach. She praised him for not laughing at her when he taught her how to say ‘water’.

‘I really wanted to thank my mum, because she’s the best person I know. Without her none of this would exist, including my life, so thank you for that Mum.’

The American actress said she was ‘in awe’ of all of the team behind the film, where she plays the part of a woman who is reanimated and implanted with the brain of a baby.

She paid tribute to the writers for coming up with the line ‘I must go punch that baby’ in a memorable dinner scene, and also hailed director Yorgos Lanthimos for ‘our friendship and the gift of Bella’.

Also thanking her mother, Stone said: ‘She kind of made me believe this crazy idea that I can do something like this.’

Meanwhile, Da’Vine Joy Randolph crowned victorious in the Best Supporting Actress category for her part in The Holdovers as she continues her march to Oscars glory.

Randolph took to the stage and told Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was presenting the award, ‘you are so handsome’ – prompting laughter from the audience.

On a more serious note, she said: ‘Thank you for trusting me with this beautiful character.

Becoming emotional, she said being able to ‘wear this beautiful gown, standing on the stage in London, is not a responsibility I take lightly’.

Randolph plays school cook Mary in the film set at a boarding school in the early 1970s.

Next up, Director Jonathan Glazer and producer James Wilson’s The Zone Of Interest won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film.

Wilson told the audience they were ‘stunned’ the film had won three awards during the ceremony, and while it was shot in Poland, the team who made it was assembled from the UK.

The night kicked off with French legal drama Anatomy Of A Fall winning the Original Screenplay award after premiering in Cannes back in May.

Collecting the award, co-writer and director Justine Triet, said: ‘The last time I I was in London, a woman said to me: ‘After I saw your movie I called my ex and told him to see it to understand why I dumped him.’

‘Someone else said ‘Did you put a mic in my kitchen?’

Gesturing to her co-writer and partner Arthur Harari, Triet said ‘I would like to make a statement tonight: it’s a fiction and we are reasonably fine.’

Harari referred to the plot of the courtroom drama when he joked that he had recently found himself near a window in an attic.

He added: ‘I want this room as my witness, if something happens to me, I loved insulating that attic and I’m quite happy tonight.’

Next up, Poor Things has won the BAFTA for special visual effects.

VFX supervisor Simon Hughes said receiving the special visual effects BAFTA for the the film was a career highlight.

‘It’s the peak of my career, absolutely for me. And to have it happen on such a unique film like this is just a real eye-opener, it’s been such a surreal and such a rewarding experience.’

Following this, drama film Earth Mama was honoured with the BAFTA outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer, presented by David Beckham.

Director Savanah Leaf was sobbing as she took to the stage to be presented with the award for her tale of a pregnant single mother.

Leaf said ‘this is crazy’, adding: ‘Our lead had never acted before and she poured her heart into this and she was so fearless.’

The director was given the award alongside Irish producers Shirley O’Connor and Medb Riordan.

The Zone Of Interest won the BAFTA for a film not in the English language.

Director Jonathan Glazer said it was ‘an out of body experience’ to win the award as he paid tribute to his collaborators.

Producer James Wilson thanked Glazer for his ‘virtuosity and his friendship’.

He continued: ‘Walls aren’t new from before or since the Holocaust and it seems stark right now that we should care about innocent people being killed in Gaza or Yemen or Mariupol or Israel.’

He added: ‘Thank your for recognising a film that asks us to think in those spaces.’

The BAFTA for Casting was awarded to Susan Shopmaker for private school-set The Holdovers, while the editing award has gone to Jennifer Lame for Second World War biopic Oppenheimer.

Comedy drama American Fiction has won Best Adapted Screenplay.

American writer and former Gawker journalist Cord Jefferson said winning a BAFTA was ‘surreal’, and that he had his speech written for him because he did not think he would need it.

Jefferson said in a ‘risk-averse industry’, he is thankful for his film – about a novelist who spoofs the ‘black genre’ of books, which becomes a ruse he has to maintain – was made.

The Boy And The Heron won the Best Animated Film Bafta.

Filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki was not at the ceremony so the award was collected by presenters Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott.

The Documentary BAFTA went to 20 Days In Mariupol, which highlights the work of Associated Press journalists in the besieged Ukrainian city during the Russian invasion.

Ukrainian filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov said: ‘This is not about us’, this is about the country invaded by Russia and the bombed city they filmed in was just ‘a symbol of everything that has happened’.

‘Thank you for empowering our voice, and let’s keep fighting,’ he added.

Composer Ludwig Goransson won the BAFTA for Original Score for Oppenheimer while Johnnie Burn and Tarn Willers scooped the honour for best sound for Holocaust film The Zone Of Interest.

The BAFTA for Production Design went to Shona Heath, James Price and Zsuzsa Mihalek for surreal comedy Poor Things, about a woman who is reanimated and begins a new life.

It was previously announced the BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema would go to programmer and archivist June Givanni, founder of the Pan African Film Archive, who collected the prize during the ceremony from Bridgerton star Adjoa Andoh.

Northern Ireland actor James Martin, from Oscar-winning film An Irish Goodbye, presented the British short film Bafta to Yasmin Afifi and Elizabeth Rufai for Jellyfish And Lobster, a tale about care home residents.

Accepting the prize, Afifi said the film was about elderly people who find the ‘magic in their final days’, before wiping tears away from her face.

Egyptian actor Sayed Badreya, who appears in the film, got down on his knees and prayed on stage.

The British Short Animation BAFTA was presented to Ross Stringer, Bartosz Stanislawek and Aleksandra Sykulak for Crab Day, about a father and son in a fishing community.

Stringer thanked his parents in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and said the film was about ‘standing up for yourself, no matter what the world thinks of you’.

Poor Things won two more BAFTAs for best costume design, and make-up and hair.

Samantha Morton collected the BAFTA Fellowship from producer David Heyman, who she worked with on Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.

There were tributes from her Minority Report co-star Tom Cruise, as well as collaborators Susan Lynch, Molly Windsor and Daniel Mays, while Heyman described her as a ‘rare breed and true artist’.

Morton was visibly emotional and overwhelmed as she said: ‘This is nothing short of a miracle. When I first saw Ken Loach’s Kes on a huge telly that was wheeled into my classroom I was forever changed.

‘Seeing poverty and people like me on the screen, I recognised myself – representation matters.’

She said she would tell her younger self: ‘You matter, don’t give up, the stories we tell, they have the power to change people’s lives.

‘Film changed my life, it transformed me and it led me here today.’

She added: ‘I dedicate this award to every child in care, or who has been in care and who didn’t survive.’

The BAFTA Rising Star award was won by Mia Mckenna-Bruce following a public vote.

The star of coming-of-age film How To Have Sex appeared emotional on stage as she thanked her family and her ‘beautiful baby boy’.

The 26-year-old joked that she hopes her little sisters, who do not think ‘I’m cool’, will change their mind after her win.

Margot Robbie, Emily Blunt, Emma Stone and Florence Pugh were among the star-studded arrivals earlier in the evening on the glitzy red carpet.

Zendaya and Florence Pugh sizzled while attending the star-studded Dune: Part Two premiere in Mexico City, Mexico, on Tuesday.

The Euphoria star, 27, showed off a hint of underboob in a unique brown cropped top with structured shoulders and a turtleneck.

The actress – who recently admitted it's “weird” to kiss her co-star and boyfriend Timothee Chalamet, 28, in the film – paired the look with a matching brown skirt with a thigh-high slit.

She added height to her body with a pair of black heels, and wore her short brunette locks parted to the side and slicked back.

Meanwhile, Pugh, 28, showed off her curves in a figure-hugging white dress with ruffles.

After multiple delays, the film will now hit theaters on March 1, 2024.

The sci-fi sequel, directed by Denis Villeneuve, is co-produced with Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Film Group produced.

Dune: Part One and Part Two are based on Frank Herbert's novel of the same name, originally published in 1965.

The official logline for Dune: Part 2 reads: “Paul faces a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe. He is trying to prevent a terrible future that only he can foresee.”

One of the first attempts to adapt the novel into a film was led by director Alejandro Jodorowsky, and although the project was ultimately canceled, his efforts were documented in the 2013 feature film Jodorowsky's Dune.

David Lynch subsequently directed an adaptation of Dune, which was critically panned upon its release in 1984.

Villeneuve became attached to the new versions of the project in 2016, and Dune: Part One was finally released in 2021.

The feature film received positive reviews from critics and currently has an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Dune: Part One also won six of the ten Academy Awards it was nominated for, including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound.

The feature film sequel wasn't formally greenlit until after the first film's release, though it was put into production just a few days after Dune: Part One debuted.

Filming for the feature film took place from July to December last year, with filming taking place in Budapest and Abu Dhabi, among others.

Villeneuve has also expressed a desire to direct a third feature film in the series, which would be based on Herbert's 1969 novel Dune Messiah.

Paris, Amsterdam, Venice, Bali and Florence… all places that most people love to visit or dream of doing so one day.

Yet some of the most popular destinations for holidaymakers are fed up with British tourists and are actively trying to deter them from visiting.

Indeed, Parisians have recently hit out at Emily In Paris fans who are ‘invading’ Europe’s City of Light to take selfies with the sites made famous by the Netflix series.

Furious locals scrawled angry graffiti across the shutters of a café used in the hit show, while an editorial in Le Monde, a French daily newspaper, even bore the headline: ‘They think they own the neighbourhood! Emily In Paris – an invasive neighbour.’

But Paris isn’t the only destination that’s fighting against tourism. Here, FEMAIL reveals the places that aren’t so keen on tourists…

Paris, Amsterdam, Venice, Bali and Florence… all places that most people love to visit or dream of doing so one day. Yet some of the most popular destinations for holidaymakers are fed up with British tourists and are actively trying to deter them from visiting

PARIS

It’s become even more of a hotspot for tourism following the popularity of Netflix’s Emily In Paris – but not everyone is excited by the added number of visitors.

Furious locals have scrawled angry graffiti across the shutters of a cafe used in the series, with new pictures showing the shopfront painted with the words ‘Emily ‘f**k off’, while another reads ‘South Paris is not yours’.

The store sits on the same square as lead character Emily’s house, as the American marketing executive – played by Lily Collins – lives above a restaurant nearby.

Tourists regularly pose outside the eatery – which in real life is called ‘Terra Nera’, as compared to its stage name ‘Les Deux Comperes’.

Another cafe’s shutters on the same street has the words ‘Emily Not Welcome’ penned on it in huge black letters in protest at the show’s fans.

Meanwhile, on the square’s water fountain, further graffiti against the series calls the Chicago-born protagonist a ‘s**t’. The beautiful feature also boasts further writing: ‘Emily Not Welcome’.

The French capital has previously dubbed the hoards of fans of the programme ‘l’invasion des imbéciles’, which translates as ‘the invasion of the morons’.

An editorial in Le Monde, a French daily newspaper, even bore the headline: ‘They think they own the neighbourhood! Emily In Paris – an invasive neighbour.’

It comes as visitors themselves may be at risk of ‘Paris Syndrome’ – the term given to tourists who have been given unrealistic and romanticised expectations of France from books and films, and more recently, TV shows such as Emily In Paris.

In the Netflix show, the main character lands in the country, wins over the locals despite not speaking any French and lives a lavish lifestyle.

As a result, visitors to the city can experience culture shock when the reality doesn’t match up to their expectations.

Paris Syndrome has even been said to cause hallucinations, convulsions and panic attacks.

The reality of messy streets, the language barrier or an uncomfortable run-in with a local can trigger the psychological disorder.

But tourists have not been put off from visiting the charming square – with social media teeming with people posing outside the shops.

In 2023, Amsterdam launched a ‘digital discouragement campaign’, telling young Brits to ‘stay away’ if planning to visit the city for its notorious red light district and cannabis coffee shop culture.

This included a cap on the number of flights landing at Schiphol, partly citing environmental reasons and trying to improve the lives of beleaguered city residents.

The Dutch capital launched its discouragement campaign in March to deter would-be sex and drug tourists from travelling to the city for short, disruptive stays.

It would issue special warnings to potential travellers when they searched for terms such as ‘stag party Amsterdam’ or ‘pub crawl Amsterdam’.

‘The campaign will commence in Great Britain, aimed at males in the age category of 18 to 35 years,’ Amsterdam city council said in a statement.

‘This online discouragement campaign is aimed at nuisance tourists who want to visit Amsterdam to ”go wild”, with all the ensuing consequences.’

It would be expanded to ‘potential nuisance-causing visitors from the Netherlands and other EU-countries’ in the coming year, the statement said.

The campaign featured a staged video showing a young man being arrested after he was found stumbling along the city’s streets.

‘Coming to Amsterdam for a messy night and getting trashed = 140 euro fine and a criminal record,’ the video warned in its caption.

Months after in November, Amsterdam revealed that its campaign to keep rowdy Brits away was working, with data showing a 22 per cent drop in arrivals from the UK compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Figures were presented at the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) by ForwardKeys, which studied booking data for the industry.

Olivier Ponti, the vice-president of insights at Forward- Keys said: ‘The Netherlands has put a cap on air connectivity. That is obviously a hurdle and they have launched demarketing campaigns telling people to stay at home.

In February, Lanzarote’s President María Dolores Corujo said she wanted to see the island rely less heavily on ‘the British market’, and focus on tourists from mainland Europe.

She added: ‘It’s essential to work on the diversification of the sector and the growth of markets like the German market, which adapt to our intentions of aiming at higher-quality tourism and holidaymakers who spend more when they’re here and moves us away from mass tourism.’

But the comments angered British visitors, who make up nearly half of the tourists who visit Lanzarote every year.

Lanzarote tourist board information shows Britons also spend an average of €34.94 per day on the volcanic islands, more than most foreign visitors.  On top of this, British expats make up five per cent of Lanzarote’s 130,000 population.

She came under heavy fire from opposition leaders and industry groups, who said her comments were damaging to British-Canarian relations.

Francisco Martinez, vice-president of Lanzarote’s Island Association of Hotels and Apartments, said political leaders were opening an unnecessary debate and being ‘badly-advised’.

Jet2 boss Steve Heapy wrote to Corujo asking her to explain what she said and clarify whether or not she wanted British tourists coming to the island.

Lanzarote’s opposition leader Astrid Perez also waded into the debate, saying Corujo had been ‘irresponsible’ but adding: ‘I don’t expect the British to boycott Lanzarote just because of the irresponsible comments of a politician whose words don’t represent islanders’ feelings.’

Corujo was later forced to allay the fears of British tourists by insisting: ‘You are and will always be welcome here.’

She insisted in an open letter to a newspaper on the island: ‘It’s categorically false that in Lanzarote we do not want British tourism or that we want to reduce the numbers of British tourists.

‘I will say it once and for all. British tourism has always, is and will always be welcome on the island of Lanzarote.

‘In Lanzarote we are also lucky to have an excellent long-time resident British community, a community that is sensitive to the environment and involved in caring for and defending sustainable development for our island.

‘We share our island character with the British and that makes the existence of limits in an insular, fragile and small territory like ours very well understood.

Venice has recently tried to crack down on mass tourism by announcing plans to test a new day-tripper fee and new limits on the size of tourist groups.

Starting in June, groups will be limited to 25 people, or roughly half the capacity of a tourist bus, and the use of loudspeakers, ‘which can generate confusion and disturbances’, will be banned, the city said in a statement in December.

The city official charged with security, Elisabetta Pesce, said the policies were aimed at improving the movement of groups through Venice’s historic centre as well as the heavily visited islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello.

It came after the city announced plans to test a new day-tripper fee. The five euro (£4.34) per person fee will be applied on 29 peak days between April and mid-July, including most weekends.

It is intended to regulate crowds, encourage longer visits and improve the quality of life for Venice residents.

The UN cultural agency cited tourism’s impact on the fragile lagoon city as a major factor in it twice considering placing Venice on UNESCO’s list of heritage sites in danger.

The city escaped the first time by limiting the arrival of large cruise ships through the Giudecca Canal and again in September when it announced the roll-out of the day-tripper charge, which had been delayed when tourism declined during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Seville is world-renowned for its beautiful architecture, flamenco shows and tapas scene – but it would rather certain tourists didn’t rush to experience this.

The Spanish city’s Mayor José Luis Sanz said the city council is planning to ban groups from wearing underwear in the streets and engaging in ‘obscene acts’ as he declared the area has ‘no interest whatsoever’ in party tourism.

Speaking to The Times, Mr Sanz said: ‘Anyone can celebrate their bachelor party in Seville.

‘What we don’t view favourably are groups of people dressed as whatever, with brass bands behind them, disturbing the many residents of Seville — especially in areas of the historic centre — who also have the right to enjoy their city.

It comes amid increasing fears from locals that the religious city – famed for its architectural heritage and Seville oranges – is being overrun by youngsters who see it as a thrifty option to party abroad thanks to its good weather and cheap alcohol.

IBIZA & MALLORCA

The neighbouring islands of Mallorca (pictured) and Ibiza have been trying to change their party-destination image in recent years

The neighbouring islands of Mallorca (pictured) and Ibiza have been trying to change their party-destination image in recent years

The neighbouring islands of Mallorca and Ibiza have been trying to change their party-destination image in recent years.

Mallorca has added ten five star hotels since 2018. Ibiza has doubled its own number of high-end resorts since 2016.

The director of tourism for Mallorca, Lucia Escribano, previously declared her industry chiefs ‘are not interested in having budget tourists from the UK’.

But this move away from ‘budget’ British tourists and toward ‘upmarket’ visitors from the likes of France, Italy and the Netherlands has meant that rental costs and housing prices have ‘skyrocketed’.

Therefore, for some locals in Mallorca and Ibiza the situation has become so desperate that they have been forced to live in camper vans as they cannot afford to live in apartments or houses.

‘More and more people are moving into campers,’ said Matias Vidal, director of the real estate agency Inmovisa in Mallorca. ‘It’s still a minority but an increasing trend that we didn’t see some years ago.’

Vidal, who has been selling properties in Mallorca for decades, added: ‘Foreigners have more money available usually and they don’t look so carefully for bargains so that makes prices skyrocket.’

In the wake of the Covid pandemic to discourage ‘cheap tourists’ and boost revenue, Bali announced plans to introduce a ‘tourist tax’, costing around £26 per person per visit.

Meanwhile in June, it was announced caps on tourist numbers could mean holidaymakers have to meet a certain criteria before entering the Indonesian island as the government looks to impose restrictions to prioritise ‘quality’ visitors over ‘quantity’.

The restriction on visitor numbers is just one of many changes being introduced as locals lose patience with boisterous and littering foreigners not respecting local customs and sacred sites.

Bali has a population of 4.3 million people but there were 6.3 million visitors in 2019 before travel was interrupted by the Covid pandemic.

The steady rise in tourists – up from less than 2 million in 2008 – has government officials worried the number could skyrocket over the coming years.

The sheer volume of visitors pouring in combined with the island’s reputation as a party hotspot has resulted in a string of controversies.

Last year a tourist filmed himself naked at a sacred Hindu site. The episode was just one of a series of similar incidents. Another tourist was seen screaming and lunging at security officers outside a religious ritual.

While yet another group of travellers filed an official complaint about roosters crowing at dawn which infuriated Bali locals who rely on the poultry to make a living.

A figure of seven million tourists is being considered for the cap, which could see tough competition for places as Bali becomes increasingly known across the globe as a holiday destination for those on a budget.

Applicants could have to show they have enough cash to fund their entire trip to successfully gain entry, while the slightest trouble there could result in a ban from returning.

The island’s governor Wayan Koster told local media: ‘These foreigners are very arrogant but I am not anti-foreigners. A comprehensive evaluation is necessary to regulate the entry of foreign tourists.

‘For instance, there might be a consideration of a limit of seven million individuals based on certain criteria.’

Mr Koster said the island should focus on ‘quality tourism’. ‘This is to maintain Balinese culture and local wisdom which must be dignified,’ he said.

The island has already banned some tourists from driving mopeds following anti-social behaviour.

Bhutan’s tourism only started in 1974, according to The Independent – and is highly regulated to preserve the country’s picturesque landscape.

It reportedly has a policy of ‘high value, low impact tourism’ and the number of tourists is restricted

It also boasts an expensive ‘Sustainable Development Fee’ (the equivalent of tourism tax), which is now around nearly £79 per day.

Bhutan is 70 per cent forested with six-sevenths of the woodland ‘protected’. It claims to be the first net carbon-positive country in the world.

The national speed limit is 30mph as dogs and cattle tend to wander over and sleep on the roads.

In 2019, Florence registered over 15 million tourist overnight stays, which was 20 times its population of 708,000 at the time, according to Statista.

Fighting against messy tourists, visitors are no longer allowed to eat snacks outside in four central streets in Florence.

But one of the city’s museum directors said on Monday that mass tourism has now turned Florence into a ‘prostitute’.

‘Once a city becomes a prostitute, it is difficult for it to become a virgin again,’ Cecilie Hollberg, director of the Accademia Gallery that houses Michelangelo’s statue of David, told reporters on the sidelines of an event.

‘Florence is very beautiful and I would like it to return to its citizens and not be crushed by tourism,’ the German historian added, complaining about a lack of normal shops in streets filled with souvenirs.

But ‘it is already too late,’ she said, according to La Repubblica daily, warning that if there was not an ‘absolute’ brake on numbers, ‘I do not see any more hope’.

The Gallery later issued a statement in which Hollberg apologised ‘for having used the wrong words’ about ‘a city that I love’.

‘What I meant to say is that Florence must be a witness for all of Italy of an increasingly conscious tourism, not ‘hit and run’ tourism,’ she said.

But Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said her words were ‘serious and offensive’ to Florence and the whole of Italy – and threatened to take action, saying he would ‘evaluate all appropriate initiatives’ under current legislation.

The deputy mayor of Florence, Alessia Bettini, also weighed in against Hollberg, saying that if the city was a prostitute, ‘are then Florentines the children of a prostitute, and tourists clients of a prostitute?’

Former premier Matteo Renzi, a senator for Florence, said Hollberg ‘should apologise or resign’.

The gallery director is the latest official in Italy to express concern about the impact of overtourism, particularly in cities such as Florence – where the historic centre is packed with crowds for much of the year – and Venice.

Florence Pugh commanded attention as she struck a number of dramatic poses on the streets of Rome in Italy for a Valentino photoshoot on Saturday.

The actress, 28, is the fashion company’s latest muse and she looked very glamorous as the camera snapped her as the face of the brand.

Movie star Florence looked stunning in a floor-length beaded chainmail dress with a plunging neckline.

She wore a floaty cream semi-sheer cloak over the top to match the colour of the garment.

Florence could be seen waving the piece through the air as she posed for the camera during the shoot in the Italian capital.

She wore a pair of gold heels which were visible as she lifted her dress as she walked.

Florence was surrounded by a large crew who tended to her make-up and hair, with her blonde locks slicked back over her head.

The camera followed her around as she posed on the streets against the surroundings of the beautiful European architecture.

Florence has worked with Valentino before, having done a number of shoots for the high-end label.

Last year she experienced controversy when she posed in a sheer pink dress which left her nipples on show.

But she branded the criticism ‘vulgar’, insisting people have become scared of the human body.

The Don’t Worry Darling star wrote on Instagram at the time: ‘What’s been interesting to watch and witness is just how easy it is for men to totally destroy a woman’s body, publicly, proudly, for everyone to see.’

Florence also told Elle: ‘I speak the way I do about my body because I’m not trying to hide the cellulite on my thigh or the squidge in between my arm and my boob: I would much rather lay it all out.

‘I think the scariest thing for me are the instances where people have been upset that I’ve shown ‘too much’ of myself. When everything went down the with Valentino pink dress a year ago, my nipples were on display through a piece of fabric, and it really wound people up.’

It comes after Florence made her debut starring in Rachel Chinouriri’s new music video last week after she reached out to the singer on Instagram.

The star, who features in the video as the musician’s best friend, looked incredible as she wore a plunging chainmail mini dress.

In the accompanying video for Rachel’s latest song, Never Need Me, Florence teamed the 90s number with a pair of heels.

She styled her bright blonde hair into a quirky, textured look and topped her outfit off with a grungy makeup palette.

Rachel was nominated for the 2021 Ivor Novello Awards Rising Star Prize, which recognises the achievements and ambition of young musicians in the industry.

Her new track comes ahead of the release of her debut album What A Devastating Turn of Events, due 3rd May via Parlophone/Atlas Artists.

Explaining how her appearance in the music video came about, Florence said: ‘Recently I was in LA and I was listening to a few of her songs and I thought, you know what, I’m actually going to reach out to this amazing artist.

But Florence – who was introduced to the charity via a friend who works closely with them – admitted she knew ‘barely anything’ about dementia and doesn’t want people to think she is an ‘expert’.

She said: ‘The first thing people always ask is, “So what’s your personal connection to dementia?” But I find it quite interesting that I don’t have one? I don’t have anybody in my life living with it, but I do have people in my life that are living around it, and I’m very aware that it’s something that’s not just a disease to the person, it’s a disease to the family, and there’s so little information that’s commonly known…

‘I am in no way saying I am an expert, I do not want people to think that. I think it can be so confusing in this era, when everybody is an “expert” on everything and everybody has an article to share on Instagram… While that’s equally important, it’s also important to let people know we are also learning, and it’s OK to not know. That’s definitely my angle in this.’

The Fighting With My Family actress has already raised over £20,000 via her Cooking with Flo Instagram Live programme and through her Florence Pugh Race Against Dementia Team fundraiser, she aims to raise £750,000 to fund the work of a group of elite dementia researchers for five years.

Kylie Jenner looked sensational on Thursday night as she showed off her toned body in a sultry bedroom look in Paris.

The reality TV veteran wore a jet black push-up bra with thin straps and a matching robe that fell off her shoulders and exposed her bare legs as she left a group dinner with friends at the Costes Hotel.

The Calabasas cutie wore sky-high Louboutin pumps and clutched a black satin clutch bag while in the historic city.

Paris Fashion Week was quite an experience for Kris Jenner's daughter.

The 26-year-old makeup mogul has been spending time with Florence Pugh, Jennifer Lopez and her sister Kim Kardashian as they attended event after event.

The siren is being praised for her elegant looks as she has finally shed her teenage bad girl image.

It seemed like maybe the only thing Kylie had under that robe was a pair of underwear as she struggled to keep the robe closed.

It seemed like maybe the only thing Kylie had under that robe was a pair of underwear as she struggled to keep the robe closed.

She was heavily made up and her long raven hair appeared wet, a look she has embraced lately.

The Thursday outfit was really something to take in.

Billionaire Jenner essentially wore lingerie and a bathrobe, making it look like she had just walked out of the bathroom before she had to put on clothes.

But the mother-of-two pulled off the look with confidence.

On Wednesday, the reality star was the picture of glamor in a sheer dress with silver sequins that clung to her curves as she walked alongside her cheering fans.

She was eventually joined by her mother Kris Jenner, who embraced her edgy side in a black blazer with sunglasses.

It comes after Kylie wowed fans at the Jean Paul Gaultier show in Paris in a corset minidress with flowing champagne tulle over it, and her artfully tousled bedhead looked more like a longer version of her boyfriend Timothée Chalamet's Indie boy curls.

It was quite a style transformation for Kylie, who is usually all lip fillers, pneumatic curves, contours and skimpy clothes.

When she arrived at the fashion show, Kylie had a high fashion look and looked angelic in a strapless dress with soft pleats.

To complete the elegant ensemble, Jenner added a pair of very Cinderella-esque bright heels.

And fans were quick to notice the star's 'soft girl era' look as she showcased her new understated style, ditching smokey eye make-up and fake lashes for a minimalist glow.

She also waved to boyfriend Jordyn Woods.

The Kylie Cosmetics founder's natural moment stands in stark contrast to some of her more over-the-top looks.

And perhaps it's no coincidence that the style switch has happened since she sparked a romance with 28-year-old Chalamet, considering the Indie darling and the reality star make such an unlikely couple.

Kylie's fashion week fun comes after some bad news.

Her boyfriend Timothée Chalamet had to deny that Jenner had rejected his girlfriend Selena Gomez at the Golden Globes.

The 31-year-old actress was caught on camera with close friend Taylor Swift, deep in conversation at the star-studded bash in Los Angeles, and while it is believed she had gossiped about the 'Kardashians' star and her boyfriend, rumors have been suppressed.

The Wonka star spoke out to pour cold water on any speculation about a feud between his A Rainy Day In New York co-star and himself and his partner.

When asked if he and Selena are “cool,” he told TMZ, “Of course.”

Then pressed if Kylie was “being a mean girl and disapproving of Selena,” he simply said “no.”

Fans on social media claimed Selena asked Timothée for a photo at the glitzy awards show, but Kylie allegedly said no.

A source told People: “She made absolutely no reference to Timothée or Kylie and never even saw or spoke to them.”

Meanwhile, Timothée is said to be 'incredibly grateful' for Kylie's support during awards season.

The 28-year-old movie star and the mogul turned the ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Hollywood into a date night.

An insider told Entertainment Tonight: 'Things are going really well between Kylie and Timothée. They support each other enormously and enjoy being there for each other.

'Kylie is extremely busy and has so many things of her own, but she does her best to stand up for Timothée. It means a lot to him to have her support and that she goes out of her way for him and the things he is passionate about. He's so incredibly grateful and sees a side of Kylie that she doesn't necessarily show to everyone.”

As Hollywood's most bankable actresses, they certainly have the money to hit the red carpet with a million dollars.

But despite their deep pockets, some still seem unable to find suitable clothing.

Oppenheimer star Emily Blunt showed up at the AFI awards luncheon in Los Angeles on Friday wearing a cream Louis Vuitton tuxedo-style jacket that made her petite frame look so small it looked more like a poncho.

The British star, 40, of The Girl On The Train and The Devil Wears Prada, who is reportedly worth more than £60 million, paired her oversized suit with a £5,000 calfskin Petite Malle Bag, also from the French fashion house.

Emily's Oppenheimer co-star Florence Pugh followed with an almost identical look, but seemed to have the opposite problem.

Her jacket, by Stella McCartney, looked unflatteringly tight and was only buttoned halfway down Florence's toned midriff.

The outfit is part of the British designer's Spring 2024 collection, which Florence, 28, paired with a silver clutch.

Elsewhere on the same red carpet, Emma Stone – who recently won best actress at the Golden Globes for her role opposite Mark Ruffalo in sci-fi comedy Poor Things – showed off a set of billowy sleeves on a Louis Vuitton shirt that extended past her. fingertips.

She wore it with a black and white checked waist belt, also from Louis Vuitton, and a flowing black skirt.

They may be the toast of Tinseltown, but with clothes that don't fit, they're all money – and no cachet.

Jennifer Aniston, Ryan Gosling, Selena Gomez and other A-list stars were caught having a blast during commercial break and backstage at Sunday’s Golden Globes in Beverly Hills.

Hollywood’s latest and greatest looked excited for the opportunity to mingle, laugh and celebrate another successful year of film and TV with their peers inside the famed Beverly Hilton hotel.

Aniston — who wowed on the red carpet just hours earlier — was photographed holding hands with Barbie star Gosling before sharing a warm hug with nominee Selena Gomez.

On the other end of the room, Margot Robbie put on an animated display chatting her hunky husband while Succession stars Kieran Culkin and Nicholas Braun jokingly scowled at one another for a photo.

Oppenheimer star Florence Pugh cracked up with laughter with her arm wrap around Matt Damon after presenting a jovial Christopher Nolan with the award for Best Director.

And while to audiences it might look similar on the surface, it’s been tumultuous few years behind the scenes following a bombshell report in the Los Angeles Times.

The 2021 report found that there were no black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association – which votes on the awards.

Stars and studios boycotted the Globes and NBC refused to air it in 2022 as a result.

After the group added journalists of color to its ranks and instituted other reforms to address ethical concerns, the show came back in January 2023 in a one-year probationary agreement with NBC. The network did not opt to renew.

In June, billionaire Todd Boehly was granted approval to dissolve the HFPA and reinvent the Golden Globes as a for-profit organization.

Its assets were acquired by Boehly’s Eldridge Industries, along with Dick Clark Productions, a group that is owned by Penske Media whose assets also include Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, Rolling Stone and Billboard.

In mid-November, CBS announced that it would air the ceremony on the network on Jan. 7. It will also stream on Paramount+.

The group nominating and voting for the awards is now made up of a more diverse group of over 300 people from around the world.
