Farmer volcano and flowing lava dent tourism in the Icelandic region

The Blue Lagoon resort in southern Iceland is a picturesque network of steaming azure pools surrounded by dark rocks, where tourists dip in the geothermal waters, receive spa treatments and enjoy what the resort advertises as ‘a universe of radiant well-being’ .

But last week, a stream of radiant lava erupted from a crater several miles from the resort, forcing the resort to evacuate hundreds of guests, in yet another eruption of a volcanic system on the Reykjanes Peninsula that has been dormant for 800 years.

The eruptions started in 2021, and the eruptions and earthquakes on the peninsula have destroyed some houses and displaced villagers from their homes. One construction worker went missing in the city of Grindavik after falling into a crack caused by an earthquake.

The effects of the volcanic eruptions have spread beyond the peninsula, disrupting tourism activities in a country that relies heavily on visitors.

Arnar Már Ólafsson, director general of the Icelandic Tourist Board, said that when a threatened volcanic eruption led to the evacuation of Grindavik in November, it resulted in global unrest, causing a drop in tourist numbers.

“A spouting volcano doesn’t sound very inviting,” he said.

Icelandair, the country’s flag carrier, said it also saw a “significant negative impact on bookings” in the final months of 2023. And low-cost Icelandic airline Play said news of the eruption “cooled demand for Iceland as a destination.”

The Tourism Board has not released an estimate of the financial losses, and the airlines, while saying they have experienced significantly slowed revenue, have not quantified them.

Airline officials and the director of the Bureau of Tourism emphatically stated in interviews and in national news media that the response was unwarranted because the eruptions posed no immediate threat to visitors or flights. They accused the news media of “alarmism.”

“The international press makes it seem like Iceland is ruined,” said Birgir Jónsson, CEO of Play at the time, said in an interview published in December by a financial magazine.

Tourists used to flock to the Reykjanes Peninsula to view the Northern Lights or bathe in the waters of the Blue Lagoon resort. But since the earthquakes in November, the Blue Lagoon had to close for a few days. It said in a statement on Wednesday that it was also closed from March 16 until at least Thursday and would continue to follow authorities’ safety guidelines.

The Northern Light Inn, a family-owned hotel, has had to evacuate its guests four times since January and close for weeks, said Fridrik Einarsson, the inn’s owner. Now they are compensating for the drop in tourists by serving lunches to the construction workers building protective walls in the area.

“If this continues for a long period of time, it will ultimately be a very, very challenge for us,” said Mr Einarsson.

Mr Ólafsson said any threat to the Blue Lagoon geothermal resort undermines an important part of Iceland’s tourism industry.

“Without the Blue Lagoon it would be a different destination,” he said, “like Egypt without the pyramids or Paris without the Eiffel Tower.”

The resort is especially popular with visitors from the United States, and according to the Blue Lagoon website, hundreds of thousands of people visit the spa every year. The spa is now protected by barriers.

The resort owes its existence to the geothermal energy generated by the volcanic system, which heats the water. But that same system is now also the biggest threat.

Many say this paradox is at the heart of Iceland’s identity as an adventure travel destination where tourists seek out untouched nature in the form of waterfalls, glaciers and hot springs. And 130 volcanoes.

During last year’s volcanic eruptions, when tourists flocked to places where they could see the glowing river of lava, the government had to warn people to avoid the area as the situation could become dangerous.

Now concerns have subsided somewhat, Icelandic tourism operators say, and demand for tourists has risen again since January. But for those left on the peninsula, there appears to be no immediate end in sight to the disruption of their businesses.

When Mr. Einarsson, the inn’s owner, evacuated his guests to another hotel last week because of the volcanic eruption, he said they could see lava from the parking lot.

“It’s a very beautiful experience to see a volcano,” he said.

Mr. Einarsson called his relationship with volcanoes a “tricky love and hate situation.”

On the one hand, he said, “people are understandably concerned about staying in a hotel next to an eruption site.” On the other hand, he said, people come to Iceland for the nature, and nature wouldn’t be the same without the country’s volcanoes.

“And I wouldn’t be in the business,” he said.

Despite being in her seventies, the American woman has never lost her passion for fitness and has even become a fitness instructor.

Allison Williams cut a fashionable figure as she left the Good Morning America studio in New York City on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old artist put on several warm clothes after she finished her appearance on the daily talk show and stepped out into the cold streets of the city.

The actress, who recently attended a star-studded SAG screening of Fellow Travelers, wore a gray sweater under a navy blue coat that fell over her shoulders.

Williams also wore a dress that almost matched the color of her sweater, as well as a pair of leather high-heeled shoes.

The Get Out cast member wore several necklaces and her beautiful brunette hair fell to her back and shoulders.

The artist’s appearance on Good Morning America came just two days after she promoted her true crime podcast, Erased: The Murder of Elma Sandsduring an episode of CBS News.

The podcast centers on the murder of a 22-year-old woman, whose body was discovered in a Manhattan well in 1800 after disappearing the month before.

Sands’ partner, Levi Weeks, was subsequently charged with her murder, and he was defended in court by Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr.

During her appearance on CBS News, Williams was joined by the podcast’s creator and narrator, Allison Flom.

The media personality first heard about Sands’ story when she was working as a tour guide in New York City, and later discovered that the murder site has since become part of the basement of a luxury clothing store in SoHo.

The Girls actress opened up about her first meeting with Flom and what attracted her to the project, on which she serves as executive producer.

She recalled, “When she approached me and said, ‘Do you want to do a historical podcast in modern language, kind of in the style of a radio show,’ I was like, ‘Absolutely.’

Williams went on to speak about the historical significance of Sands’ murder case.

“It gave me context for what was broken from the beginning, and it has only continued to deteriorate over time,” she said.

The first episode of Erased: The Murder of Elma Sands was released last October, and the finale debuted in November.

Hailey Bieber showed her more than 50.7 million Instagram followers how to be “best dressed” at any party in Calvin Klein’s latest holiday campaign.

Wearing a flowing silver dress and delicate gold chain, the 26-year-old Rhode founder posed with both hands on her hips as she stared intensely into the camera.

In another image, she sat on the floor with one leg elegantly extended in front of her as she leaned forward.

Hailey went braless in several photos, including one of her rocking nothing under a structured black blazer.

Her latest post comes just a week after she shut down the constant and “disheartening” pregnancy rumors.

“I can’t be bloated once and not be pregnant?” she vented GQ hype.

Hailey further admitted that it “would be a lie” to say she “didn’t care” about comments about her body.

When she and husband, Justin Bieber, decided to start a family, the beauty said that “the internet will be the last to know” when she is expecting.

Hailey further revealed that she’s “looking forward” to motherhood, but noted that it’s “a private, intimate thing.”

She revealed she’s in no rush to get pregnant anytime soon, adding: ‘It’s so hilarious how many people care. Let me do what I want to do with my body and you can do whatever you want to do with your bodies – and let’s leave it that way.’

The couple tied the knot at a New York City courthouse on September 13, 2018, just months after Justin’s final split from his on/off girlfriend Selena Gomez.

Justin wrote a heartfelt tribute to his wife on his Instagram page in honor of their five-year anniversary.

The Peaches singer wrote, “To the most precious, my love… 5 years.”

Talking about his wife, he added, “You have captivated my heart. I know from the depths of my soul to my bones that this journey with you will only exceed our wildest expectations.”

She summed it up with “I love you,” including intimate shots of her and her husband in the photo dump where they posed together and shared a kiss.

And Myleene Klass certainly embraced the British heat wave in a flowing leopard print maxi dress as she headed to work at Smooth FM on Saturday.

The presenter, 45, looked stylish in her flowy dress, perfect for the hottest day of the year, as she arrived at Global Studios in London.

Myleene accessorized her look with chunky black sandals and hoop earrings as she walked into the radio studio.

She added a cheeky pop of color to the proceedings and topped off her look with a bold red lip.

Myleene made a bold statement with her eye-catching printed dress as she entered the studio to host her Smooth show.

It comes after Myleene indignantly claimed Maria Caulfield, the government’s women’s health minister, has ignored her requests for a meeting.

Myleene, who has had a miscarriage in the past, said she wanted to meet in person to discuss a potential rule change to help patients, but said she had had no response.

The TV and radio personality took to social media to express her frustration.

Myleene has expressed her wish for the law in Britain to be changed so that women are not forced to have three miscarriages before they are eligible for help.

She originally tweeted on Tuesday that she was “still waiting for a meeting” in hopes of “closing” the proposed changes.

Referring to “250,000 women (p/a) and their dead babies,” Myleene raged: “They all deserve more than a zoom call as currently suggested by you.”

The next morning, she was equally persistent, adding, “Tomorrow @mariacaulfield. I have messaged you (again) requesting a personal meeting with you.

The emotionally charged situation is close to Myleene’s heart, as she herself has had four miscarriages.

She also had three successful births — daughters Ava, 15, and Hero, 10, plus son Apollo, three, but she swears she’ll never forget the devastating pregnancies she lost.

Myleene also raised the delicate issue with MailOnline and other members of the press during a campaign last year.

“If I disappear from the planet tomorrow, I’ve done my part,” she reasoned about her decision to go political.

“I have beautiful babies and they will know I marched into Parliament with the likes of Olivia Blake [MP],’ she explained.

“We’re changing the law so no woman has to be told, ‘You’re going to have this experience two more times, three times in total before we look at it,'” she vowed.

However, she added, “It’s taken forever, as most things do when it comes to government.”

She had previously admitted on Instagram that her baby loss journey had left her “mentally weakened,” especially when she saw other mothers’ success stories online.
