Last year on this day, the last king of Greece died at the age of 82.

King Constantine of Greece was cousin of the late Duke of Edinburgh and godfather of Prince William.

Constantine, the only son of King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece, lived much of his life in exile in London after a decade of political turmoil and a 1974 referendum that rejected the monarchy.

He was the brother of Queen Sofia of Spain, wife of former King Juan Carlos.

The end came after months of illness and several hospital admissions. He died after suffering a stroke at the private Hygeia Hospital in Athens.

Constantine II was a young monarch who was only 23 years old when he came to the throne in 1964.

He was an enormously popular figure and had already achieved fame as an Olympic gold medalist in sailing.

By the following year, he had squandered much of that support thanks to his involvement in the machinations that toppled Prime Minister George Papandreou’s popularly elected Center Union government.

This episode, still widely known in Greece as the ‘defection’ – which involved the defection from the ruling party of several politicians – destabilized the constitutional order and led to a military coup in 1967.

Constantine eventually clashed with the military rulers and was forced into exile with his wife Princess Anne-Marie, the youngest daughter of King Frederick IX of Denmark and his family.

The dictatorship abolished the monarchy in 1973, while a referendum after democracy was restored in 1974 dashed hopes of Constantine’s return.

In the following decades he was reduced to only fleeting visits to Greece, each time causing a political and media storm, and in his last years he was able to settle back in his home country, when his opposition to his presence no longer made the currency a token of vigilance. republicanism.

He would not return to Greece for decades, where he was deeply unpopular due to his decision to swear in the colonels who seized power in April 1967.

He worked with them briefly before staging a failed counter-coup, which led to his exile.

The military junta abolished the monarchy in 1973. In a referendum after the fall of the junta in 1974, Greece rejected the monarchy again.

After the referendum, his relationship with Greece was problematic.

In 1981, he was allowed to return for only a few hours to bury his mother, Queen Frederika, at the family estate in Tatoi, about 20 kilometers north of Athens.

In the 1990s, Constantine was stripped of his Greek citizenship and the state seized Tatoi and a palace on the island of Corfu, where Prince Philip had been born in 1921.

Throughout his life, Constantine maintained a close relationship with other European monarchs.

Constantine’s father, King Paul, was a cousin of Prince Philip and father-in-law of Juan Carlos I of Spain.

Constantine was also godfather to Prince William.

For many years he had a palatial home in Hampstead Garden Suburb, north London.

Diana, Princess of Wales, was a frequent visitor to the home in the 1990s and reportedly dropped off Prince William and Prince Harry there for playdates and family vacations in Europe.

Constantine died on January 10 in the Greek capital of a stroke, at the age of 82.

His widow, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, paid a moving tribute at the funeral.

The 77-year-old widow had tears in her eyes as she wore the same cross pendant she had worn at her 1964 wedding.

Last weekend, members of the royal family from across Europe – including Queen Margrethe of Denmark and King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain – flew to the Greek capital to attend the funeral.

Princess Anne – the Greek king’s second cousin – appeared stoic as she entered Athens Cathedral with her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

Among the other European royals in attendance were King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, as well as Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands.

The public funeral was followed by a 18-mile procession to the Tatoi Palace, from where a separate private ceremony took place in which Constantine was buried with other members of the Greek royal family.

A friend of Princes William and Harry has said it’s ‘incredibly sad it has come to this’ after the Duke of Sussex was not invited to a close friend’s wedding over the potential awkwardness the rift with his brother could cause.

Harry and his wife Meghan were snubbed by Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, who decided not to invite them to his nuptials with Olivia Henson next year in a bid to avoid ‘drama’, it is claimed.

Despite the fact he is godfather to the Sussexes’ son, Prince Archie, and one of Harry’s oldest friends, it is claimed the Duke has not invited him so the row won’t overshadow his big day.

It’s believed William and Kate and the King and the Queen are all invited to the June 6 wedding at Chester Cathedral, with the Prince of Wales even thought to be in the running to be best man.

It comes as tensions are already high between Harry and William – after King Charles III and Kate Middleton were named as the royals alleged to have made comments about the skin colour of Harry and Meghan’s son Archie prior to his birth in the Dutch edition of Scobie’s latest tome, Endgame.

William is said to ‘want action’ after his wife Kate was named alongside Charles as the two Royals identified by Meghan in a private letter to the King, which claimed ‘concern’ was expressed about her future son’s skin colour. Pictured: Harry and Meghan with Archie in 2019

The Sussexes are yet to speak on the book publicly and a meeting between Charles and William is now set to take place next week to discuss the topic.

It could have serious consequences for Harry and Meghan as William is believed to ‘want action’ after his wife Kate was named alongside Charles as the two royals who expressed ‘concern’ about Archie’s skin colour.

The Duke of Westminster had originally planned to invite Harry and Meghan to his wedding, but the 32-year-old aristocrat changed his mind, fearing their presence would overshadow the day, The Sunday Times reports.

Another serious consideration was the feelings of Charles, Camilla, William and Kate, who are all likely to be there.

A friend of the pair told the paper: ‘It’s incredibly sad it has come to this. Hugh is one of very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both.

‘He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realises it’s unlikely to happen before the wedding. He wanted to avoid anything overshadowing the day, especially for Olivia, and doesn’t want any awkwardness.’

A spokesman for the Duke said last night: ‘We are not in a position to comment on the guest list.’ Buckingham Palace also declined to comment.

Known as Hughie to this friends, the billionaire Duke is also godfather to William’s son Prince George, ten.

A life-long friend for each of the brothers, he is thought to be the only pal both chose to mentor their children.

Archie’s other godparents have not been named publicly by his parents – but include Tiggy Pettifer, Harry and William’s former nanny, Mark Dyer, his minder, and his school friend Charlie van Straubenzee.

Meghan is likely to be less disappointed than her husband to miss out on the Duke’s wedding celebrations, expected to be held at his 10,872-acre Eaton Hall estate in Cheshire. Scobie has said she is loathe to return to England and ‘dive back into the soap opera’.

Grosvenor, who is thought to own more land than the King, has an estimated net worth of £9.42 billion and has a long history with the royal family – with his late father Gerald acting as King Charles’ own godfather.

The Duke was the third child and only son of Gerald Grosvenor, the 6th Duke of Westminster, and his wife Natalia who is a descendant from the Russian Imperial House of Romanov, specifically from Nicholas I of Russia.

When he was baptised on 23 June 1991, the King – then the Prince of Wales – agreed to officiate as godfather.

He even had an official role in the King’s coronation procession – carrying the Standards of the Quarterings of the Royal Arms and Standard of the Principality of Wales alongside the Marquess of Anglesey, the Earl of Caledon and Scottish peer and Conservative politician the Earl of Dundee.

Grosvenor was raised at Eaton Hall with his three sisters: Lady Tamara, Lady Edwina, and Lady Viola. They attended a local public primary school before he attended the small, private Mostyn House School, followed by Ellesmere College in Shropshire where fees are £40,635 a year.

He later studied at Newcastle University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Countryside Management

The Duke, whose Latin family motto Virtus Non Stemma means Virtue not Ancestry, was originally titled Earl Grosvenor from his birth until 2016, when his father died and he became the seventh Duke.

At the time he was labelled Britain’s most eligible bachelor but in April this year he announced his engagement to Olivia Grace Henson.

Ms Henson, the Duke’s girlfriend of two years, works for an ethical food company. She attended Princess of Wales’s old school, Marlborough College, where Princess Eugenie was a contemporary.

He confirmed the engagement through a statement, which said: ‘The Duke of Westminster and Miss Olivia Henson are delighted to announce they are engaged to be married.

‘The couple, who have been together for two years, recently became engaged at the Duke’s family home at Eaton Hall in Cheshire.

‘Members of both their families are absolutely delighted with the news.

‘Hugh Grosvenor, The Duke of Westminster, is Grosvenor’s Chair as well as Chair of the Westminster Foundation. Miss Henson works for Belazu, a B-Corp certified food company based in London.’

MailOnline has contacted the Sussexes for comment.

It comes as the King will ‘confer’ next week with William over how to handle the fallout from Scobie’s book.

Determinedly, the Royal Family has adopted a ‘business as usual’ stance, but the possibility of legal action remains. The final decision on the next step rests with Charles, who, according to sources, will not act hastily.

A Palace source said: ‘Most right-thinking people would expect an apology – who wouldn’t?

‘Being falsely branded a racist in print is a serious allegation that must be treated seriously. All options are still on the table.’

The King is said to be taking the taking the furore over the book ‘very seriously’ and will consult senior advisers next week on the family’s next step, with ‘all options’ including legal action set to be considered.

But sources close to the Duchess of Sussex , who allegedly wrote down the names of the two family members in letters to King Charles, have insisted to that she ‘never intended for them to be publicly identified’.

One source close to the Royal Family has now called on Harry and Meghan to speak out publicly on the issue.

‘For the couple that talked about ‘death by a thousand no comments’, the silence at this point is deafening,’ the source told The Telegraph.

Another insider added that the decision not to respond was ‘interesting’ given the Sussexes’ previous complaints about not being supported against negative press stories.

The scandal – which Scobie has been forced to insist was not a publicity stunt – has kept Endgame in the headlines for more than a week as excerpts were published in the days before its release in a French magazine.

The most eye-grabbing extract serialised in Paris Match claimed that there was a second so-called ‘royal racist’ – after Harry and Meghan alluded to a member of the Royal Household expressing discomfort over Archie’s skin colour in 2021.

The pair were allegedly identified in the Dutch version of the book – and were named widely by media organisations around the world tonight, including the Guardian and the Times, as King Charles and Kate.

The inclusion of the names led to 5,000 copies of the book – called ‘Final Battle’ in Holland – being withdrawn from sale on the bookshelves and pulped.

Bookstores were ordered to remove the paperback from their shelves and return to the publisher. The book will go back on sale next week.

And newly revealed extracts from the Dutch version of the book – which have been changed or omitted from the UK edition – look set to further heighten tensions within the firm.

The text called the Prince of Wales ‘heartless’ – a term that does not appear in the UK edition, The Sun reports.

It further claimed that the reason why William was still angry with Harry when the Queen died was because of the couple’s interview with US TV star Oprah the year before.

A series of quotes – which are attributed to ‘sources close to the Sussexes’ – calls William ‘heartless’ and ‘petty’ as it claims he ‘ignored’ Harry as the royals rushed to Balmoral.

Meanwhile,  Conservative MP Bob Seely has revealed his intention to introduce a Bill calling on Parliament to strip the Sussexes of their titles in wake of the row.

Writing in The Mail on Sunday, he said that he felt compelled to act because of the ‘use of race to smear the Royal Family’ – and proposes to revive First World War laws that could pave the way to making the couple plain Mr and Mrs Sussex.

The Isle of Wight MP wants to adapt laws originally passed to deny enemy German nobles their British titles. Mr Seely said he had to act because of the attempt to use race to smear the Royal Family, which he called ‘poisonously insidious’.

He is applying for his Titles Deprivation 1917 Amendment Bill to be listed on the Commons’ Order Paper next week. It would resurrect the wartime powers by removing references to ‘enemies’ and ‘present war’. He has cleared the wording with Parliament’s Table Office, which oversees draft legislation.

Pressure is mounting on Harry and Meghan after Prince William demanded action on allegations of racism made in Omid Scobie’s incendiary book – and their son’s godfather snubbed them from his high-society wedding to avoid drama.

William is said to ‘want action’ after his wife Kate was named alongside Charles as the two Royals identified by Meghan in a private letter to the King, which claimed ‘concern’ was expressed about her future son’s skin colour.

And further difficulties are massing on another front for the Montecito-based pair as Parliament could consider the ‘nuclear option’ of stripping Harry and Meghan of their royal titles under bombshell legislation to be proposed this week.

Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, is said to have decided against inviting the Sussexes to avoid clashes on his big day amid soaring tensions following the release of Omid Scobie’s new book.

Mauled by critics, Endgame portrays the King as ‘inept’, William as a power-hungry company man and Kate as a ‘Stepford wife’. Only Meghan and Harry escape censure.

One of Prince Harry’s closest friends and godfather to his son Archie, the devastating snub will be seen as a consequence of the couple’s increasingly bitter rift with the rest of the Royal Family.

A life-long friend for each of the brothers, he is thought to be the only pal both chose to mentor their children.

And to rub salt in the wound, it is thought Prince William is in the running to be Grosvenor’s best man.

The broadsheet understands that the Duke wanted to invite Harry and Meghan but eventually decided against it as he feared the tension it would cause with the other Royals who have been invited – including the King and Queen.

‘It’s incredibly sad it has come to this,’ a friend of William and Harry’s told The Sunday Times.

‘Hugh is one of very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both. He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realises it’s unlikely to happen before the wedding.’

‘He wanted to avoid anything overshadowing the day, especially for Olivia, and doesn’t want any awkwardness.’

A spokesman for the Duke said last night: ‘We are not in a position to comment on the guest list.’ Buckingham Palace also declined to comment.

Archie’s other godparents have not been named publicly by his parents – but include Tiggy Pettifer, Harry and William’s former nanny, Mark Dyer, his minder, and his school friend Charlie van Straubenzee.

It comes as tensions are already high between Harry and William – after King Charles III and Kate Middleton were named as the royals alleged to have made comments about the skin colour of Harry and Meghan’s son Archie prior to his birth in the Dutch edition of Scobie’s latest tome, Endgame.

The King is said to be taking the taking the furore over the book ‘very seriously’ and will consult senior advisers next week on the family’s next step, with ‘all options’ including legal action set to be considered.

Harry and Meghan, meanwhile, have not commented publicly on the scandal. Scobie has been accused of acting as a ‘mouthpiece’ for the Sussexes, an allegation he has denied, writing on X, formerly Twitter: ‘I’m not ‘Meg’s pal’.

Prince George’s billionaire godfather was robbed of £42,000 worth of watches after hiring decorators to spruce up his family seat, it emerged today.

Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, lost a £30,000 Cartier London Tank JC wristwatch, plus a Panerai Luminor Marina watch and a Breitling watch, each worth £6,000, after a workman sneaked into his bedroom and helped himself during redecorating rooms at Eaton Hall in Cheshire.

The 32-year-old duke, who is believed to own more land than the king, only discovered the precious timepieces were missing three weeks later while looking for the Cartier to wear.

It is believed the aristocrat, who has an estimated net worth of £9.42 billion and whose late father Gerald was King Charles’ godfather, had commissioned workers to decorate the rooms in the mansion but not his bedroom.

The raid on the 10,872 hectare estate took place in August last year, but details have only now emerged after two men were arrested and charged in connection with the burglary.

Last Friday, Matthew Turner, 24, from Great Sutton, near Ellesmere Port, pleaded guilty at Chester Crown Court to burglary between August 7 and 31, 2022.

He also admitted an unrelated theft of £60 from a tire shop and will be sentenced later at Chester Crown Court.

Nathan Elliot, 30, of Whitby, Ellesmere Port, was charged with handling the stolen Cartier but pleaded not guilty and will stand trial.

Prosecutor Scott Woodward said: “The Crown says this is not appropriate to be heard in this court. The charge concerns a residential burglary. The value of the goods from the burglary amounts to £42,000, a significant sum.

‘If we take that value into account, the starting point is a year in prison. The sentencing guidelines clearly go beyond those of this court, so I invite you to send them to the Crown Court.”

Turner’s lawyer Steven Alis said: ‘The damage category here relates to the value of items and I agree that the starting point is 12 months. But I’m not saying he’s going to get that.’

Turner was released on bail for preparing background reports. He is expected to be sentenced after Elliott’s trial. The duke who was not present in court was the third child and only son of Gerald Grosvenor, sixth Duke of Westminster, and his wife Natalia, a descendant of the Russian Imperial House of Romanov, specifically of Nicholas I of Russia.

They will marry on June 7, 2024 at Chester Cathedral.

Eaton Hall has been the country home of the Grosvenor family since the 15th century. The first large house was built in the 17th century, but in the early 19th century it was replaced by a much larger house designed by William Porden.

This in turn was replaced by an even larger house, with outbuildings and a chapel, designed by Alfred Waterhouse. Construction began in 1870 and was completed about twelve years later. By 1960, the house’s structure had deteriorated and it was demolished.

The latest house takes on the appearance of a French chateau and is surrounded by its own formal gardens, parks, farmland and woodland.

India Hicks grew up surrounded by royalty. Her mother was maid of honor and lady-in-waiting to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

India herself is the goddaughter of King Charles and was a bridesmaid at his first wedding.

It is therefore more appropriate that she spends time supporting the King’s youth charity, the Prince’s Trust, which serves as its patron.

And she recently put her vacation home in the Bahamas up for rent for the summer, with a percentage of the proceeds going to the trust.

Designer and entrepreneur India Hicks is the daughter of interior decorator David Hicks and Lady Pamela Hicks, lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth and daughter of the last Viceroy of India

At £18,000 a week to rent, it’s not exactly cheap, but the location is certainly striking.

She shared details of the property on Instagram, writing, “Our guest house is located in a grove of palm trees, on top of the dunes.

“Designed to look like it’s been there forever. According to tropical traditions, we built the house on four pylons, to keep it as cool as possible all year round.

‘The sitting room and two large guest rooms are upstairs, the dining room, kitchen and other bedrooms are downstairs.

‘Late morning you may want to wander down the private path to three miles of pink sand beach and lay on the sunbeds under our thatched cabanas, or alternatively there’s a hammock hanging between two trees in the garden somewhere for a siesta after a long lunch.

‘Looking south, you’ll have the chance to sit on the top porch with a rum cocktail in hand as the sun sets and watch the light change over both the bay and the Atlantic.

“Up here you can hear the wind in the casuarina trees and below the rustle of palms and see a lost guest or an escaping child.”

Photos of the property, designed by India and her husband, David Flint Wood, show comfortable furnishings and white walls and windows.

Speak against The timesIndia said the house and furnishings were built by local carpenters and aimed to ensure that the property does not interfere with the island’s atmosphere.

She added: “It has a private part of the beach with beach cabanas so it’s a really nice, beautiful property and we thought [renting it more widely] would be another way to raise money for a cause I am very, very involved with.”

Although she has rented the property on a small scale before, the king’s goddaughter thought she would complete her new project before hurricane season arrives.

India added that the island is a “coveted destination” that also offers beautiful hotels.

Aristocrat India was born in Lambeth, London, but moved to the Caribbean with her partner David in 1996 before welcoming their first child a year later.

They have shared the property with their children Felix, Amory, Conrad, Domino and Wesley, whom the couple adopted when he was 15, after his mother – a Bahamian waitress – passed away.

As the daughter of famed interior designer David Hicks and Lady Pamela Hicks, one of the late Queen’s former ladies-in-waiting and the daughter of India’s last Viceroy, India was exposed to both the design world and royal circles.

Now working as a designer and entrepreneur, the mother-of-five launched a podcast recording conversations with her mother.

She also devotes her time to charitable work and serves her godfather’s charity, the Prince’s Trust, as a patron of Women Supporting Women.

After attending Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral last year, India revealed she would be taking a bike ride from Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle in an effort to raise money for the monarch’s charity.

India wrote on Instagram that she would be joining thousands of others for the ride, in which she would be part of the Women Supporting Women team.

In the post she said: “Tomorrow I will be cycling from Buckingham Place to Windsor Castle, along with several thousand other people, in the hopes of raising awareness and raising money to help transform the lives of young people facing a frankly s*** ** future.

King Charles (still feels weird saying that) founded the charity in 1976 with a few thousand pounds of his navy severance pay, to tackle high youth unemployment, which he feared would marginalize young people.

‘The Prince’s Trust has now helped over a million people, believing that every young person should have the opportunity to succeed, regardless of background or challenges.’

India’s work for her godfather’s charity coexists with her support for Global Empowerment Mission, a non-profit organization that provides relief in the aftermath of international disasters.

In May last year, she and her son visited Ukraine to support the organization, transport clothes and spend time in a therapy shelter to help Ukrainian children.
