It sank in the North Sea almost 700 years ago, ravaged by rough weather.

But scientists are searching for what’s left of Ravenser Odd, a short-lived medieval town on an island in the Humber estuary.

Described as ‘Yorkshire’s Atlantis’, the important coastal town – which is the subject of a new exhibition in Hull – flourished in the late 13th century.

It lay just west of Spurn Point, the very tip of the sinuous peninsula that separates the North Sea and the Humber Estuary.

Since 2021, two Hull academics have been conducting research into the city’s remains on the seabed using high-resolution seabed mapping equipment.

What was strange about Ravenser?

Ravenser Odd was a prosperous town on an island at the mouth of the Humber Estuary.

It was founded in the mid-13th century and had more than 100 houses and a thriving market on April 1, 1299, when it was granted city rights.

But by the mid-13th century, storms and strong tidal currents began to take their toll on the settlement.

It was gradually abandoned before disappearing into the sea around 1360.

One of them is Dr Steve Simmons, a lecturer in energy and environment at the University of Hull, who said Ravenser Odd was once a ‘prosperous settlement’.

They hope to recover any remnants of the city, such as the foundations of the sea wall and the harbour, but so far they have had no success.

“Despite its relative importance in 1299, Ravenser Odd is largely forgotten today – because it disappeared, swallowed up by the North Sea,” said Dr. Simmons in an article for The conversation.

“Conditions in the estuary make it difficult to search for traces of the lost city.”

Both Ravenser Odd and its neighbor, Hull, received their charters from Edward I on the same day: April 1, 1299.

The charter made Ravenser Odd a recognized municipality and exempted merchants from certain taxes.

This allowed the city to build its own court, prison and chapel.

At its peak it had around 100 houses and a thriving market – and was an even more important port than Hull further up the Humber.

Within about half a century, the city’s fortunes faded.

‘By the mid-14th century, the storms and strong tidal currents of the North Sea began to take their toll on the settlement,’ said Dr Simmons.

‘A devastating blow was dealt in 1362 by the storm surge of the Sint-Marcellus flood, after which the city began to be abandoned.’

A historical map shows that other islands west of the Spurn Peninsula were also lost, with names such as Orwithfleet and Sunthorpe, but Ravenser Odd was the largest.

As a result of coastal erosion, it is not likely that entire islands will be weakened and lost over time, Dr. Simmons warns.

The Holderness coastline, north of the Spurn Peninsula, is the fastest eroding coastline in Europe.

The crumbling cliffs of soft boulder clay are retreating at an average rate of 2 meters per year.

Ravenser Odd is the subject of a new exhibition at the Hull History Center running until Thursday 30 May.

It contains important documents, including maps of medieval Hull and the original charters of Hull and Ravenser Odd, borrowed from the National Archives.

“Despite its proximity to Hull, the story of Ravenser Odd is relatively unknown,” says councilor Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for Leisure and Culture.

Both Ravenser Odd and its neighbor, Hull, received their charters from Edward I on the same day, April 1, 1299. Pictured, portrait erected in Westminster Abbey sometime during the reign of Edward I, believed to be an image of the king

‘An understanding of the Ravenser story and its implications for the wider Humber will enable Hull people to reflect on their own 800 years of maritime history and the opportunities to explore themes around Hull’s own development.

‘This exhibition will tell the story in many different ways and capture the imagination of residents, children and young people.’

While there is little doubt based on contemporary evidence that Ravenser Odd existed, the same cannot be said about Atlantis to which it is being compared.

It is said that the so-called ancient city was destroyed and submerged under the Atlantic Ocean, but that is not the case it is generally believed to have been invented by the Greek philosopher Plato.

Last year, another research team revealed that they had found the German equivalent of Atlantis: the city of Rungholt, which was sunk by a storm in 1362.

Is this the first look at a lost civilization linked to Atlantis? Archaeologists in Spain discover 2,500-year-old statues that may resemble the faces of an ancient society that mysteriously disappeared

Archaeologists in Spain have discovered 2,500-year-old statues that resemble the faces of a prosperous yet mysterious ancient society.

Five stone busts from the 5th century BC were found in Casas del Turuñuelo, a historical monument in Guareña, southern Spain.

The site was built by the Tartessos – a civilization that settled on the southern Iberian Peninsula about 3,000 years ago.

But the Tartessos have inexplicably disappeared – and what they looked like has long been a matter of speculation.

Tartessos has been associated with Atlantis – a mythical ancient city that was said to be destroyed and submerged under the Atlantic Ocean.

Before it was turned into a pub, this pub was an old cinema.

In the 1920s, the building of the former Palladium cinema was built in the Markthal.

The now Wetherspoons retains many of the historic features of the Edwardian era.

  • The Opera House, Tunbridge Wells

Every year the Opera House in Tunbridge Wells celebrates the building’s past use.

For three days a year, the location is transformed into a theater where punters can watch the opera.

  • The Winter Gardens, Harrogate

This Wetherspoons has beautiful winter gardens where punters can stroll after having a pint.

In the 1920s, café visitors could relax with their favorite company while listening to music played by the Municipal Orchestra.

  • The Knights Templar, London

Lovers of drinking can get married at The Knights Templar Wetherspoons in London.

For just £3,000, the popular pub chain is offering an all-inclusive package, consisting of a three-course meal, DJ and table wine for 100 guests.

  • The counting house, Glasgow

This location was previously owned by the Bank of Scotland.

Gamblers can still see the designs inspired by the Italian Renaissance.

  • The Velvet Rollercoaster, Blackpool

The Velvet Coaster overlooks one of Britain’s most visited tourist attractions.

The pub is less than 150 meters from Blackpool Pleasure Beach and South Pier.

It’s one of the largest pubs in Britain and has a buzzing roof terrace.

  • The North West, Lime Street Station, Liverpool

A £2 million redevelopment saw a Spoons pub emerge on the site of the former North Western Hotel.

The building is Garde II listed and has a vintage train station theme.

The North Western has a striking interior and features steam-inspired lighting fixtures and rail-themed artwork.

  • The Rochester Castle, Stoke Newington, London

Founded in 1801, Rochester Castle remains the oldest Wetherpoons site.

Gamblers have been drinking there for more than 300 years.

Rochester Castle replaced a former pub, The Green Dragon, which was founded in 1702.

  • The Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, Keswick

This quirky drink is inspired by the last place you want to end up after a night out: a prison.

The site in Keswick, Cumbria, is a renovated magistrates court and police station.

Pub visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy their drink from the ‘comfort’ of a former cell.

The unique pub has been renovated from an old church built in 1845.

Some of the original church features have been retained and the pub features a beautiful original stained glass window.

Perhaps punters will visit this Scottish Spoons venue to atone for all their drunken sins.

Aussies have been warned it is unfair to tell Centrelink recipients to ‘get a job’ – as the debate over welfare benefits reignites and benefits rise again.

From this week, five million Aussies will receive a cash boost of up to $20 every fortnight on Centrelink payments.

Centrelink’s payments are indexed for inflation every six months, with the 1.8 per cent increases that came into effect on Wednesday reflecting the combined Consumer Price Index increases in the September and December quarters.

Amid the rise in payments, many of those receiving Centrelink have heard the words ‘dole bludger’ or ‘get a job’ – but experts say these comments unfairly characterize those receiving benefits.

Elise Klein, senior lecturer in public policy at the Australian National University, recently set out the top four reasons why securing a job is not as easy as it seems to many at Centrelink.

She said many recipients are hampered by other volunteer commitments, have health issues, face financial challenges or are affected by the area where they live.

Finding a job with Centrelink payments isn’t as easy as it seems, according to experts (stock image)

“Many people who are on social security do enormous amounts of unpaid work, especially unpaid work in healthcare,” Dr. Klein told ABC News late last year.

‘Another important part of this is that many people on JobSeeker have a disability or illness, so there is a tightening of eligibility for a disability pension.’

The tightening of disability pension criteria 12 years ago has meant that those on Centrelink benefits battling cancer and those with disabilities deemed unable to work part-time have been forced to receive lower Jobseeker’s Allowance, she explained out.

Dr. Klein called for the system to be reclassified.

“If you’re fighting cancer or know you have a disability, you’re not looking for work,” she added.

“You can’t be looking for work; You’re trying to stay alive.

‘The whole rationale behind JobSeeker is a complete mismatch with where people are.’

Location is also another big factor, especially in remote areas where there aren’t enough jobs.

The policy also creates a barrier for job seekers and Youth Allowance recipients, who have mutual obligations to actively look for work, attend job interviews, make appointments and receive training, she says.

Dr. Klein believes that the mutual obligations should be eliminated or revised.

“The payments are so low that it puts people below the poverty line, and that’s a big barrier for people to get out and look for work,” she said.

‘There is a huge amount of Australian-specific research showing that mutual obligations work against people.

‘People who are actually subject to mutual obligations don’t want them and say they are really damaging and affect their self-confidence and ability to go out and look for work.

‘They consume people’s valuable time and are at odds with reality.’

The Australian Council of Social Service has made calls for the federal government to increase income support payments following routine indexation increases.

According to CEO Cassandra Goldie, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Youth Allowance and related payments should be increased to the new pension rate of $80 per day so that recipients can afford basic necessities.

“The changes will still leave more than a million people dependent on JobSeeker and associated payments struggling to survive, with JobSeeker rising by just 96p a day to $55 a day,” Ms Goldie said this week.

“It is completely inadequate for people who are barely surviving, forced to ration food and medicine or suffering from the sweltering heat because they cannot afford to cool their homes.

‘With unemployment expected to rise this year, lifting income support is not only the right thing to do; it provides an essential buffer against falling living standards and increasing job losses.’

Old-age pension, disability pension and healthcare allowance: Increase every two weeks by $19.60 every two weeks for singles and $29.40 for couples.

Singles get $1,116.30 and couples get $1,682.80 per fortnight.

Recipients include job seekers and people taking an ABSTUDY course who are over 22 years old: Increase by $13.50 every two weeks. Total payments of $771.50 per fortnight

Single parents: Boost of $17.50 every two weeks. The total number of biweekly payments increases to just over $1,000.

ADDICTED locals shouted “not our hidden gem” as their beloved garden center was threatened to make way for MORE homes.

The proposal to demolish the Dillywood Garden Center in Medway, Kent, has sparked a backlash as residents reject new plans for 12 four-bed houses.

1

Dillywood Garden Center is in danger of being demolished to make way for more homes

Fans have been singing the praises of the independent, ‘great value’ garden center for years, while raving about its ‘excellent’ tea and cakes.

The social center is now at risk as Medway Council considers an application from Planning Insight, on behalf of Provectus Developments.

The controversial developer wants to demolish the nursery in a bid to bring more housing to the area, as reported by KentOnline.

Their application statute stated: “The continued use of the site as a garden center is no longer feasible.

“The integrated development proposal makes efficient and effective use of the existing underutilized garden centre.

“The new homes would not result in significant damage to or loss of public or private land that contributes positively to the local character of the area.”

TRAFFIC HELL

But residents fear that even more housing will stretch the area’s already narrow roads to their limits and create travel chaos.

Elizabeth Turpin, Strood Rural ward councilor, explained: “Dillywood Lane is incredibly narrow so there may be an increase in transport.

“With multiple cars per home, this will probably cause problems, because it is not a location where you can really live without a car.”

Locals said it would be “a shame” if Dillywood were forced to pull down the shutters for good, destroying “job losses”.

Meanwhile, parish secretary Emma Johnson argued that new housing development would be “unsustainable” along the “single railway”.

The concerned official was concerned about the increased traffic flow “with limited passing places”.

“There were also concerns about development on green belt land, and councilors also wanted to ask whether the old Medway railway tunnel passes through this area and whether this has been investigated,” she added.

Frindsbury Extra Parish Council has also objected to the plans due to traffic fears.

HIDDEN GEM

A disappointed local resident said: “It’s a shame to see the garden center disappear, it’s a great shop.

“We have always used them because they are much cheaper than some of the other local ones.

“The people who work there are all so nice too.”

Another praised the location: “There was a nice range of gifts and plants and there was room for tea and cake.”

Someone else wrote: “The food is excellent, the shop itself is a hidden gem, by that I mean hard to find – but well worth the trip.”

“The cafe is fantastic and great value,” praised a fourth.

FEAR OF THE COUNCIL

It comes after developers originally submitted an application for 36 homes but were advised to scale back the plans.

Medway Council rejected the large number on several grounds, including road safety and flooding.

If Provectus Developments gets the green light, the controversial new homes will each have three parking spaces.

In addition, there will be another 48 bicycle sheds on the estate.

A decision is expected to be made on May 20.

It comes after locals in Kent were outraged by a neighbour’s ‘alien’ hut.

They claim the structure was built without permission and has turned their area into a ‘shopping centre’.

There have been angry protests after the property sales hut was erected in a Kent beauty spot.

Elsewhere in Kent, a hotelier was so concerned about the demolition of a neighboring pub for new housing that he bought it himself.

What are your rights?

If you believe your developer has not shared relevant information with you or sold a property under false pretenses, you can take them to court for misrepresentation.

If this is successful, you can claim the amount that your home has decreased in value, as determined by the court.

Other defects in homes, such as problems with the furnishings or complaints that construction work was not completed on time, are usually covered by the developer’s code of conduct.

Issues can be resolved privately with the developer and insurers.

If the handling is not satisfactory, you can submit the complaint to the independent Housing Ombudsman

This month, Airbnb announced that the company would do so from April 30 ban on the use of surveillance cameras in his rental. The news was welcomed by those concerned about privacy.

“Cameras are both creepy and a threat,” said Albert Fox Cahn, executive director of the Surveillance Technology Monitoring Projectwhich has been campaigning for a ban on cameras in Airbnbs since 2022. “People are terrified that their intimate moments will be photographed without their consent and that owners will be able to monitor their activities within a rental property.”

For many travelers, Airbnb’s new policy has raised some fundamental questions: What were the cameras even doing there? And what are the rights of travelers when it comes to privacy in hotels and rental properties?

Cameras are, of course, everywhere in public life, from the self-checkout kiosks at big box stores to airport terminals.

Like other businesses, hotels and vacation rentals use surveillance cameras for two reasons, says Michael McCall, a Hilton Hotels Fellow at Michigan State University’s School of Hospitality Business: to protect their customers and their property.

For example, a traveler may feel safer going to a hotel room or rental apartment with a security camera in the hallway. And a hotel or host can use cameras to monitor property damage or theft, although whether surveillance is effective in preventing crime is a long-standing debate among privacy and security advocates.

“There’s a balance between ‘How do I protect my stuff’ while at the same time not invading the guest’s expected privacy,” Mr. McCall said. “Airbnb said the inside is off limits.”

States differ on whether and to what extent consent is required for surveillance, and there are different rules for audio and video recordings.

“U.S. privacy law is fragmented at best,” Doris DelTosto Brogan, a law professor and Heller McGuinness Endowed Leadership Chair at Villanova University’s Charles Widger School of Law in Villanova, Pennsylvania, wrote in an email. She noted that some federal privacy laws apply to all states, but each state can develop its own privacy laws.

Airbnb previously navigated these schools by requiring that indoor cameras in common areas, such as hallways and kitchens, be disclosed to the tenant.

The short-term rental platform since 2022 VRBO has banned the use of indoor cameras, except those that are made public to guests and can be deactivated by them.

In a statement, the American Hotel and Lodging Associationwhich represents 80 percent of all franchised hotels in the United States, said surveillance cameras in hotels should be limited to common areas – such as lobbies and swimming pools – for security reasons.

While regulations vary by state, more legal protections also cover video recording without consent in private spaces such as bedrooms and bathrooms.

At the federal level, the Video Voyeurism Prevention Act of 2004 prohibits “knowingly videotaping, photographing, filming, recording in any manner, or broadcasting an image of a private area of an individual, without that individual’s consent, under circumstances where that individual has a reasonable expectation of has privacy.”

Many states and federal laws rely on the expectation of privacy. “So that would often be a bedroom or a bathroom, for example, but not necessarily a common area like a living room,” says Raymond Ku, the John Homer Kapp Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio.

But it is the illegal use of hidden cameras that has shocked travelers.

Earlier this month, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship cabin crew was arrested on federal charges of producing and possessing child pornography by installing video cameras in guests’ bathrooms and capturing intimate images of passengers as young as 10.

In February there was a man arrested in Palm Beach County, Florida, on charges of video voyeurism for secretly filming sixteen different people, sometimes at Airbnb locations.

In September, a 14-year-old passenger on an American Airlines plane discovered an iPhone taped to a toilet seat, which her family said flight attendant was installed.

Legal and security experts believe such invasions are exceptions given the millions of people who travel every day, but warrant vigilance.

“People who want to use cameras for nefarious reasons are still participating,” said Kenneth Bombace, the intelligence agency’s CEO. Solutions to global threatswhich describes a new generation of recording devices that are small, subtle and cheap.

In his company, Mr. Bombace uses high-tech devices to conduct searches — from hotel rooms to corporate boardrooms — for hidden recording devices.

For travelers without a high profile or celebrity status, he recommends a “common sense location search.”

This includes looking for small recording devices or telltale lenses in anything plugged into a power source, such as a clock radio, electrical outlets themselves, and battery-charged electronics like smoke detectors and Bluetooth speakers. Turn off the lights and use a flashlight (a cell phone flashlight is sufficient) to look for flashing lights that could reveal a camera.

If you’re not sure, you can throw a towel over an electronic device or tape up the electrical outlets.

Because many recording devices require an Internet connection to stream footage, check the Wi-Fi network on any connected devices and ask the homeowner or property manager what they are. Apps like Network analyzer And Ubiquiti WiFi guy scans networks and detects connected devices.

Numerous portable gadgets on Amazon, priced at less than $150, it claims to detect hidden cameras.

“None of the technologies are 100 percent effective, but they minimize and reduce the chance that a recording device will go undetected,” Mr. Bombace said.

If you find a hidden camera in a hotel room or short-term rental, collect evidence by taking photos or videos and contacting the police. Then look for new accommodations.

Airbnb directs guests to report privacy violations to it customer support team. HomeAway does the same and notes website that if you leave a property because of the violation, “the host may be required to refund the entire stay” and be kicked off the platform.

Landlords still have methods to ensure their property rules are not abused. Both Vrbo and Airbnb offer hosts the option to use devices that measure sound decibels outdoors without recording conversations if disclosed to renters. Vrbo mentions its use to ward off potential noise complaints from neighbors. Airbnb, which is banned party housessays the devices can detect “unauthorized parties.”

The platforms still allow remote cameras at rental properties as long as they are disclosed to the guest before arrival. The disclosure is usually included in the listing and the device should not be used for indoor peeking. HomeAway goes even further when it comes to outdoor pool cameras, requiring notice both in the property descriptions and on site.

  • The big cat hides on an Indian hill in Rajasthan known as Leopard Hills

You’ll need 20/20 vision to spot the elusive leopard hiding in plain sight on this Indian hill.

This majestic place is known as Leopard Hills and is surrounded by the Pali district of Rajasthan. It is home to up to 100 leopards that are experts at blending in with the landscape around them.

The images, taken by British wildlife photographer Stuart Benson, show the beautiful cats lounging on the hills, perfectly camouflaged by the texture of the hills and surrounding terrain.

But can you find the wild cat hiding from the lens in this tricky optical illusion?

Can you find the hidden leopard in this tricky optical illusion?

As the natural, earthy colors blend together in the photo, your eyes may be tricked into thinking that there is nothing suspicious lurking in the landscape.

But among the rocks and plants there is a big cat somewhere, and we challenge you to find it.

If you are having a hard time, don’t worry because you can find the solution below.

In the incredible photos, Benson, 66, from Anglesey, Wales, said: ‘We had been looking for leopards since dawn and after a few hours of driving around we were able to locate them.

‘The leopards were so beautifully camouflaged in the rocks that we could not see them until they started moving, even though they were in our direct line of sight.

“Once we located them, we were concerned they would move away before we could get a good photo, but two of them stayed around.”

Have you spotted it yet?

Another image also shows two of the cutest cubs peeking out of their cave and looking directly at the photographer.

“Initially there were three females and two cubs, and one adult female moved away,” Benson said.

‘One cub stuck its head out of the cave and after a few more minutes the second cub peeked out from behind a rock.

‘Even though we had located them, it was difficult for us to see them through the lens because they just disappeared into their environment.

‘We were amazed that our guide was able to spot these beautiful animals, given how well they were camouflaged and how difficult they were to see. They were real experts.’

Time is up!

If you haven’t spotted the leopard yet, check out the photo below to see where the predator is hiding.

This mind-blowing optical illusion can reveal whether you have a high IQ if you can see the hidden details in the photo.

Sounds easy, right? But there’s a catch: you only have 20 seconds to identify them all.

At first glance, the mind-bending drawing is just a sketch of a black tree and its branches, against a white background.

However, there are five hidden animals in the monochrome image, which are harder to spot because the color has been removed.

To take on the challenge, simply set a timer for 20 seconds and cast your gaze between the branches.

This mind-blowing optical illusion can reveal whether you have a high IQ. All you have to do is discover some hidden details

If you can find all five animals before time runs out, you may have a higher IQ than most.

Challenging yourself with a visual teaser is a great way to engage your brain power and some of your senses.

However, if this has you scratching your head, here are a few pointers:

  • All five animals you are looking for are birds
  • Three are smaller and two are larger
  • On the left side of the tree are three animals

If you’re still struggling to find all the hidden creatures, stop scrolling now as the answers are revealed in the image below.

Revealed: The animals you had to spot were three smaller chicks and two roosters, which are now shaded orange so you can see them

The animals to spot were three smaller chicks and two roosters, which are now shaded orange so you can see them.

If you didn’t manage to solve the mind-boggling puzzle this time, don’t worry because there are many more brain teasers and illusions you can try.

Another optical illusion can reportedly reveal a person’s true personality depending on which animal he sees first.

The black and white photo, shared by Times nowshows both a cat and a mouse.

The test can show whether someone is independent and curious or has a more cautious personality.

Simply look at the image below and see which animal catches your attention first. Then read on to find out what it means.

The black and white photo, shared by Times Now, shows two animals – which one you see first will determine your greatest features

The black and white photo, shared by Times Now, shows two animals – which one you see first will determine your greatest features

If your eyes have naturally wandered to the black cat, which is most of the image, it means that your personality traits are similar to those of the feline animal.

You are independent and curious, but also mysterious and playful.

Like most domestic cats, you are not dependent on others and prefer to do things yourself.

You are naturally curious and always looking to learn new things and ask more questions.

You switch easily between work and play and often lure others in with your mysterious personality.

If you saw the mouse first, which is smaller on the page, it means you are more careful.

You may be quite shy and reserved, but this does not mean that you are unaware of your surroundings.

Those who first saw the mouse are both observant and timid: they always look at what is happening around them.

You are also flexible and resourceful and know what to do when faced with problems and difficult situations.

They are often cleared out to charity shops or left to gather dust in the attic, but your favourite books from childhood could actually be worth a fortune, experts have revealed.

A perfectly intact copy of the first edition The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969) could fetch more than £12,000, while a first edition of Dr Seuss’s The Cat In The Hat (1957) could be worth £13,300.

It comes after a misspelled proof copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone which cost just 13p sold for £14,432 when a private UK buyer made the winning bid at Hansons Auctioneers at Bishton Hall in Staffordshire.

The novel – which was bought at a second-hand book shop in 1997 as a ‘throw in’ with a couple of other novels for a total of 40p – misspells JK Rowling’s name as ‘JA Rowling’ on the inside cover and uses the author’s full first name ‘Joanne’.

Could your children’s book be valued for thousands of pounds? Find out what the novels on your bookshelf could be worth below:

THE CAT IN THE HAT

Many adults will have happy memories of reading the Dr Seuss stories as children. A hardback first edition (1957) could get you £13,300

Most adults will have happy memories of reading the Dr Seuss stories as children, with their whimsical rhymes and magic illustration.

‘Books and stories can really shape us as children, and classic stories such as these hold a lot of really special memories for us as adults,’ Oxbridge’s Head of Digital, Riman Verma, previously told MailOnline.

It might be time to make a new memory, as a hardback first edition (1957) of Dr Seuss’s The Cat In The Hat could get you a staggering £13,300, depending on the condition of your copy.

A first edition (1957) was recently valued at £13,300.

THE HOBBIT

Published in 1937, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien is a children's fantasy story which could fetch you up to £45,000 if you have a first, second or second revised edition of the story

Published in 1937, The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien is a children’s fantasy story which could fetch you up to £45,000 if you have a first, second or second revised edition of the story

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien remains popular today and is regarded as a classic in children’s literature.

Set in Middle-earth, the novel follows Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit, on a quest to reclaim his home from the dragon Smaug.

If you have a first, second or second revised edition of the story, you could be sitting on a fortune as research shows that copies of this book can reach up to £45,000 in value.

The 1,500 first edition copies published in the UK in 1937 by Allen & Unwin are the most sought after. A 1937 first edition sold for £45,050 in 2003.

THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR

A perfectly intact copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar could fetch more than £12,000.

The plot follows a caterpillar who eats a variety of food before pupating and transforming into a butterfly.

British antiques expert David Harper, who conducted research in 2019 in collaboration with HomeProtect Insurance, explained that unlike obvious investment pieces like vintage watches or rare designer handbags, children’s books are more likely to be overlooked.

‘A children’s book worth hundreds or thousands of pounds, may have an old price ticket inside the cover of just a couple of pounds,’ Mr Harper previously explained.

‘It could be that it’s a bit thumbed and looks valueless, so it’s likely to be thrown away or given to a local charity, only later to be discovered by an eagle-eyed collector.’

ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is considered Lewis Carroll's best work

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is considered Lewis Carroll’s best work.

The story is based on a young girl who falls asleep in a meadow and dreams that she follows the White Rabbit down a rabbit hole – where she meets a number of eccentric characters, such as The Mad Hatter.

But only 2,000 copies of the 1865 edition were printed as illustrator John Tenniel disliked the print quality.

Subsequently, these coveted editions now come with seven-figure price tags.

The following edition, released in December of 1865 but dated 1866, only had 4,000 copies – and also carry high price tags.

HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE

JK Rowling's Harry Potter series gained worldwide popularity, and if you have a true first hardcover edition (1997), you could have over £70,000 sitting on your bookshelf

JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series gained worldwide popularity, and if you have a true first hardcover edition (1997), you could have over £70,000 sitting on your bookshelf

The first book of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series, which spanned seven books and eight films, was released in 1997.

It has since gained worldwide popularity, selling more than 500 million copies worldwide, having been translated into eighty languages.

If you have one of the original versions, you could have up to a staggering £95,000 sitting on your bookshelf.

The first paperback edition first impression, published in 1997, could be worth £30,000.

A true first hardcover edition, also published in 1997, was valued to be worth around £95,000.

But it is only worth the five-figure sum if it is a hardback copy with the numbers 10 to 1 printed down the back of the title page, Matthew Haley, director and head of books and manuscripts at auction house Bonhams, previously told MailOnline.

THE WINNIE THE POOH COLLECTION

Winnie-The-Pooh by AA Milne

The House At Pooh Corner by AA Milne

AA Milne’s Winnie-The-Pooh stories were some of the most popular stories to read to children and now a full collection of the well-loved classics (Winnie The Pooh, The House At Pooh Corner, When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six) could be worth £17,500

Estimated as the most valuable of all the author’s works, if you find one of these lying around it could fetch you £12,500

Roald Dahl’s first children’s book was written for Walt Disney Productions in 1943.

The UK first edition from 1944 and US first edition from 1943 are sought after by collectors of both Dahl and Disney.

The book tells the story of the mischievous creatures, part of Royal Air Force folklore, who use them as an explanation of mechanical mishaps.

Their motivation for sabotaging British aircraft is revenge for the destruction of their forest home, which was destroyed to build an aircraft factory.

Estimated as the most valuable of all the author’s works, if you find one of these lying around it could fetch you £12,500.

THE BFG

For a 1982 first edition and first impression copy of the book, collectors are willing to splash £3,250

For a 1982 first edition and first impression copy of the book, collectors are willing to splash £3,250

One of Roald Dahl’s most popular novels, many millennials read the story of The Big Friendly Giant during childhood.

The plot is an extension of an earlier book – Danny, Champion of the World – and follows an orphan named Sophie as she goes on an adventure with the BFG.

For a 1982 first edition and first impression copy of the book, collectors are willing to splash £3,250.

However for a book to be successful, it must be both complete – no missing pages – and in excellent condition.

‘Any damage or missing pages can decrease value significantly,’ Mr Harper said. ‘Most 20th century books also need to have their original dust-jacket to be of collectable value.’

THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT

Beatrix Potter's famous The Tale Of Peter Rabbit (1901) could fetch you £14,700 if you have a hardback first edition of the classic tale

It has remained popular among children for more than a century and has seen many adaptions through new book editions, TV series and films.

This beautiful classic from Beatrix Potter can reach almost £15,000 if you have a version sitting on your bookshelf.

A first UK edition (1903) could be worth £1,500 while a first deluxe issue (1907) could get you £2,500.

A first trade edition, deluxe issue, was valued at £12,500, while a hardback first edition, first printing, could be worth a whopping £14,700.

‘If you have an extremely old, rare or a book similar to the ones on this list, which is in good condition, you really could be looking at a small fortune,’ Mr Haley told MailOnline.
