Chimeras, also called “ghost sharks,” are a type of cartilaginous fish related to sharks and rays.

Cartilaginous fish are among the oldest fish alive today. Living Science noted.

The newly described species is a type of short-nosed chimera, researchers explained.

Scientists documented this discovery in an article published March 6 in the journal Raffles Bulletin of Zoology.

The paper notes that ghost sharks live in the dark waters of the deep sea, where sunlight does not reach.

Specifically, they are found at depths below 1,640 feet around the continental slopes and ocean ridges.

The fish species tend to feed on bottom-dwelling animals such as crustaceans and molluscs, according to LiveScience.

Chimaera supapae can grow up to 50 centimeters in length, with long, broad pectoral fins.

Scientists believe the fins help the creature move across the seabed.

Perhaps most interesting is where the species was discovered: off the Andaman coast of Thailand.

It is important to note that the fish was found dead as part of a deep-sea research project conducted in 2018.

Chilling story of the world’s heaviest great white shark, torn by scars and bite marks – and how he suffered battle wounds

“Chimeras are rare in this region of the world,” David Ebertlead author of the study and program director of the Pacific Shark Research Center at San Jose State University in California, told LiveScience in an email.

“There were only 53 known species of chimeras in the world; these are 54,” Ebert said.

The discovery of Chimaera supapae is exciting for scientists because it helps us learn more about the diversity of life in the deep sea.

“Evolutionarily, these chimeras are among some of the oldest lineages of fish, with the lineage dating back 300 to 400 million years,” Ebert said.

“The discovery of new species like this chimera tells us how little we know about the marine environment and how much remains to be explored.”

In between training sessions and healthy meals, the Gypsy King showed off his beautiful green £190,000 Lamborghini Urus.

And the father-of-seven – who lives in a £550,000 Morecambe mansion – also took the rubbish out by the skip.

But to end the evening, Fury and his wife Paris visited Asda – their favorite supermarket since they married 16 years ago.

The boxing superstar filmed childhood sweetheart Paris looking for pajamas for one of their children.

And he insisted Lancashire cheese – which cost £2.75 – was “the best”.

Fury then hilariously refused to pay the £6.10 premium for Nutella spread, opting for Asda’s own spread instead.

He said: “Decisions, decisions. Do you spend £6.10 on a jar of Nutella or spend £1.85 on chocolate spread? I think we’ll take this one, Paris.”

The couple instead settled for Asda’s cheaper hazelnut chocolate spread, which cost £2.75 and saved £3.35 at Nutella.

Fury continued his savings campaign after refusing to let Paris buy a box of Ferrero Rocher popsicles for £5.

He said, “Put them back! They cost a fiver for a couple of popsicles. I don’t think so! Five quid for a couple of popsicles, buy the one pound one.”

They opted for a £1 Vimto lollipop after Fury said: “Value for money.

“After spending all the money on the Lambo in Paris, I think we should save some money on groceries.”

Ultimately it came down to paying the bill and Fury joked about the price increases over the past twenty years.

He said: “Paris, we have been coming to this Asda for 16 years since we got married.

“We built our first shop here and it only cost about €40 for the two of us, but with all those children it doesn’t cost €40 anymore, does it?

“Costs about £140! But there you go, married all these years and we still shop in the same store in Paris, in the same location, Paris”

The happy couple welcomed their seventh child in September: son Prince Rico.

He joined Venezuela, 13, Prince John James, 11, Prince Tyson II, seven, Valencia Amber, five, Prince Adonis Amaziah, four, and Athena, two.

Despite a day of sober savings, Fury then showed off a private jet with the caption: “Business call.”

The two-time champion returns in an undisputed title fight against Oleksandr Usyk, 37, in Saudi Arabia on May 18.

The fight was scheduled for February 17 until Fury suffered a cut in sparring, but he has insisted the cut has healed and training is back on.

An earlier study claimed the gigantic creature weighed 187,000 to 750,000 pounds.

That’s double that of a large modern blue whale.

A new study recently published in the journal PeerJ challenges this idea.

The team behind the study thinks the ancient whale probably weighed between 130,000 and 250,000 pounds.

Researchers analyzed the older research and created 3D models of Perucetus colossus and blue whales.

They wanted to see how such a huge whale would have moved in the ocean.

“With their weight, this animal couldn’t stay on the surface,” said lead author Ryosuke Motani, a paleobiologist at the University of California, Davis. Living Science.

“This animal would have been swimming vertically upwards the entire time, which is impossible.”

“There is a particular fascination with identifying extremes in the highest dimensions among the largest vertebrates, given the challenges and difficulties in measuring extant and extinct candidates for the largest animal of all time, such as whales, non-avian dinosaurs on the land and extinct marine reptiles,” the researchers wrote.

Paelontogolist Eli Amson was the leader of the first study.

Creepy mammoth cemetery with HUNDREDS of bones of 4-meter-high Ice Age beasts discovered

He told LiveScience that he stands by the original study and that his team gave a wider range, which was a conservative estimate for the creature’s size.

Amson is also quoted as describing the old whale as a “complete oddball.”

The Perucetus colossus is said to have lived on the coast.

This is very strange for large aquatic animals, which are usually associated with deep open water.

However, his side have failed to reach the same heights as last season after an early exit from the Champions League.

Newcastle are currently 15 points behind the top four and in tenth place, but reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Tuesday.

With Champions League qualification looking unlikely, Newcastle are interested in appointing Nagelsmann for next season, report says Image.

The 36-year-old is currently in charge of the German national team, having taken charge in September until this summer’s European Championship.

However, according to the report, he has yet to decide whether to extend his contract or return to club football.

Nagelsmann has been away from the club management since being fired by Bayern Munich in March 2023.

In another potential boost to Newcastle’s hopes, Nagelsmann is represented by the same agency as defender Fabian Schar.

Euro 2024 hosts Germany will face Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland in the group stages this summer, with Nagelsmann currently preparing for his first tournament as boss.

He is still in high demand, with both Manchester United and Liverpool linked with the former RB Leipzig manager in recent months.

Nagelsmann is reportedly on a two-man shortlist at Anfield if the Reds fail to land Xabi Alonso as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement.

Good morning. It’s Monday. Today we look at a construction site in Central Park, next to a favorite hunting ground of Flaco, the famous Eurasian eagle owl that died last week.

Before we look at the construction project, here’s what else you need to know about Flaco.

  • The Central Park Zoo said an autopsy showed injuries “consistent with death due to acute traumatic injury.” Flaco was found on the ground Friday after apparently hitting a building on West 89th Street in Manhattan, the Wildlife Conservation Society said in a statement.

  • Did he fly well? Some bird watchers speculated that he may have eaten a pigeon or a rat that had ingested poison, which could have entered his system. Toxicology tests on Flaco are underway. The association said results would not be available until weeks later. In 2021, testing on Barry the barred owl, another well-known bird that died unexpectedly, high concentrations of rat poison found in her blood, according to news channel The City.

  • Can bird strikes be reduced? The city now needs new buildings and major window replacement projects that use glass that birds will recognize and avoid. As for existing windows, New York City-based Audubon is proposing small dot-shaped stickers, which it says can reduce collisions by as much as 90 percent.

The construction in Central Park involves redesigning a portion of the park that serves as a backyard for nearby blocks in East Harlem that don’t have much green space.

A monolithic above-ground structure from the 1960s has already been demolished. It was topped by the Lasker Pool, which doubled as an ice skating rink in cold weather.

“This right’s a wrong,” Elizabeth Smith, president of the Central Park Conservancy, said one recent morning. “What was here divided the park and kept the residents of East Harlem from enjoying the rest of the park. It feels like you’re in the park now.”

The demolition of the Lasker Pool was one of several perspective-changing changes in the project that will open the way to the park south of 110th Street. The project will cost $160 million; the city is investing $60 million, and the conservancy has raised the rest. The new complex, which will include a swimming pool that can also be used as an ice skating rink, is expected to open next winter, a few months later than originally planned. “Covid has set us back a bit,” Smith said.

The differences between the old Lasker layout and what will replace it are already clear. The new building – with toilets, changing rooms and a snack area – is hidden in a hill and the path from the north side of the park runs over the green roof on top.

Hidden inside is the equipment to pump water for swimming and cool it for skating. Outside, the new swimming pool and ice rink will have an artificial grass covering, creating an open green space for park visitors to walk across. Or just laze around, if they feel like lying down and stretching out during the “shoulder seasons,” as the conservation community calls the times when the weather is too cold for swimming and too hot for skating.

Christopher Nolan, a landscape architect who helped conceive the project, said it was all very “Olmstedian” – as in Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed Central Park with Calvert Vaux. Nolan said the new structure was carefully “integrated into the landscape” in a way that Olmsted would have liked, unlike the old design, “where the idea in the 20th century was to put buildings on top of the landscape.”

Another Olmstedian touch was the diversion of a stream that flows through the area. Since the 1960s it has been diverted underground via a culvert. Now it will be visible again. And it will once again flow into the Harlem Meer, the small lake created by Olmsted and Vaux.

Smith, the conservation leader, said the new building would be open year-round. The Lasker location, which was operated by the Trump Organization until 2021, was closed for almost six months, between the swimming and skating seasons. Additionally, conservation officials said anyone who entered during skating season had to pay, even if they were just spectators who had no plans to lace up and hit the ice. Admission to the new building will be free, although there are still fees associated with renting skates and getting on the ice.

Following the January 6, 2021 riot at the US Capitol, Mayor Bill de Blasio decided to terminate contracts with the Trump Organization for four concession operations in the city, including those at Lasker Rink and Wollman Rink on the city’s South Side. the park.

The Trump contract for the Lasker concession expired in March of that year, and because the construction project was already planned, the contract was not renewed. The conservancy will take over year-round concessions when the new center opens, with pool operations handled by the parks department.

METROPOLITAN diary

Dear Diary:

In 1953, at the age of twenty, I fulfilled an old dream and moved to New York City from Ohio.

Eager to participate in life in my new city, I applied to be included as a future jury member.

A few years later I was called to serve on a civil court jury. I was the only woman.

The case was a lawsuit seeking damages against Horn & Hardart, which operated the Automat cafeterias. It was brought by a woman who claimed to have found a worm in her salad. As proof, she had kept the worm in her freezer for over a year and brought it to court.

The judge, a tall, dark-haired, middle-aged man with a booming voice, had a real New York accent that was impressive for this former Ohio resident bent on erasing her own Midwestern accent.

After the prosecutor testified to her extreme distress at discovering the worm, the judge ordered that “Exhibit A, to wit da woim,” be distributed to the jurors.

Then he paused and said with a smile and a nod to me, “Except the lady.”

I tried to protest by shaking my head, but the clerk carrying the worm passed me by.

Back in the jury room, no one doubted that the prosecutor had indeed found a worm in her salad, but we were unimpressed by the suffering she claimed it had caused her.

Hadn’t she willingly, perhaps eagerly, extracted the noxious worm, wrapped it in napkins, transported it home and stored it in her freezer?

The death of a young Melbourne man found in a mushroom field with an 18cm hunting knife lodged in his chest was initially treated as non-suspicious.

But now there's a terrifying theory behind how 26-year-old Jackson Stacker – whose severely decomposed body was found under a tree on August 25, 2021, with his scalp and dreadlocks found separately – died.

When Mr Stacker's body was found in Pottsville in the NSW Tweed Shire, police believed it was a suicide, but at an inquest in Lismore on Monday a police officer was asked if there was a more sinister explanation.

Byron Bay Detective Donna Tutt was questioned about whether she was aware of human sacrifices or cults in the northern NSW region, but she said she knew nothing about them.

Mr Stacker's mother, Sandey MacFarlane, insists her son did not commit suicide and says there was no history of suicide or poor mental health in their family.

Ms MacFarlane said Mr Stacker never told her he was depressed and there was no note or evidence to suggest it was suicide.

“I don't believe my son would have taken his own life, there was so much going on with him,” she told the inquest into his death. Byron News reported.

The last time she spoke to him was July 22, 2021, and he sounded worried and said he had lost his job.

A few days later, she deposited $300 into his bank account and wrote “call me” in the payment description.

When she didn't hear from him, she became concerned but didn't tell anyone else about her fears because she didn't want to cause panic.

Mrs MacFarlane couldn't get through once when she tried to call her son, saying it sounded like his phone was switched off.

Mr Stacker, who had been traveling in his Toyota Hiace van since 2020, was reported missing by his family on August 23, 2021, after they were contacted by a person wanting to buy his abandoned vehicle.

The inquest heard that when his skeletal remains were found two days later, he was lying face down, covered by his fur coat and with an 18cm knife protruding from his chest.

His scalp and dreadlocks were found separately, some of his teeth were missing and his boots were found meters away from his body.

But a fox or wild dog could be responsible for the condition of the body, which may have been in the field 25 miles north of Byron Bay for as long as a month, the inquest heard.

Detective Tutt said the type of knife found in the deceased's chest was a common type used by someone camping or living in a van.

State Coroner Magistrate Teresa O'Sullivan heard that valuables, including a phone, laptop and Nikon camera, were missing from Mr Stacker's van.

His friend John Winegarden said Mr Stacker visited his home in Nimbin in early August 2021 to collect tools.

“He was angry about the whole Covid lockdown, he wasn't happy that he couldn't do what he wanted to do,” he said. Byron News reported.

Mr Winegarden told his friend he could stay with him but he said no, he was going to Byron Bay beach.

He said he found Mr Stacker's behavior “strange”. “He seemed upset… he wasn't the happy Jackson… he was definitely quite depressed.”

Jackson Stacker had been traveling in his Toyota Hiace van since 2020 (pictured).

He said he later saw the Hiace van on a Facebook page but couldn't remember when because he “brought too much weed, mate.”

Mia Kieis, 25, another friend of Mr Stacker, told the inquest about an incident where he appeared to be in a manic state and had worrying thoughts.

She also said her friend felt down at times and was deeply affected by a murder-suicide involving a person they both knew.

The investigation continues.

Tragic deaths and disappearances in and around Byron Bay

Theo Hayez

Theo, an 18-year-old Belgian backpacker, disappeared in May 2019 after a night out at the Cheeky Monkeys nightclub.

He was not reported missing for five days.

In June 2020, Hayez's cousin Lisa revealed that Google data had tracked him walking through dense bushland on the night of his disappearance, suggesting he could not have done this alone.

The strongest theory for Mr Hayez's disappearance remains that the backpacker fell off cliffs and was washed into the sea.

Erwan Ferrieux and his British boyfriend Hugo Palmer, both 20, were reported missing during their holiday of a lifetime in 2019.

Police feared they had drowned in Port Macquarie after their belongings were found in the sand at Shelly Beach.

In June 2019, two human bones washed ashore – and forensic examination showed they most likely belong to Mr Ferrieux.

Palmer's femur was discovered in the sea by spear fishermen. DNA tests showed it was his.

Ghostly images reveal an abandoned Highland hunting lodge, left as a shrine to Winston Churchill and the royal family, with dozens of stunning photographs uncovered.

Discovered by an urban explorer who goes by the name Escapade, the house resembles a time capsule from the bygone era, containing an old copy of a 1951 newspaper.

Forgotten but untouched memorabilia in this lost Scottish mansion includes old military jackets, battle armor, a sword and portraits of Napoleon Bonaparte.

There are also dozens of old photographs, including photos of the Royal Family when they were young, signed photos of Winston Churchill during his military service and the Queen Mother from 10 Downing Street.

The enormous property also features numerous taxidermied animals, including an eagle and a deer, an old Victorian dollhouse and a centuries-old piano.

Nestled deep in the Scottish Highlands, surrounded by lush greenery and boggy land, this isolated building sits peacefully in the Thurso countryside.

The house was apparently owned by Archie Sinclair, leader of the Liberal Party from 1935 to 1945.

He served in Churchill’s all-party coalition government during the Second World War as Secretary of State for Aviation.

A man named Escapade moved into the house and discovered these hidden gems.

Escapade is an urbex explorer, where urbex is short for urban explorer, which means you enter abandoned and dilapidated buildings, often fenced off or hidden in some way.

He said: ‘I don’t know much about all the portraits and photographs we found in the mansion, but I could tell I was surrounded by history.

‘It’s a huge room and completely full. I’m just thankful no vandals disturbed it.

‘The floors had started to rot, the wallpaper was peeling and we found old copies of The Scotsman newspaper, one of which was dated June 18, 1951.

“Even though we knew this was Archie’s hunting lodge, it was still very creepy and exciting to come across the stuffed animals.”

This building was a dilapidated lodge before the Sinclairs took it over and transformed it into their home.

They came to this place every year for a short period of time and left the politics of the world behind.

Escapade said, “Not everyone was allowed into the mansion. The guests have been selected with great care.

‘Archie also followed his own time; he refused to switch to British Summer Time before his sabbatical was over.

‘This habit caused him to arrive an hour early for meetings and lunches.

‘When Winston Churchill’s government fell in 1922, there were rumors that Archie was shooting grouse here with Robert Boothby, former parliamentary secretary.

“This house was almost frozen in time, waiting for the Sinclairs to make their annual summer trip home.”

Prince Frederik of Denmark has been photographed hosting a yacht – despite first meeting Genoveva Casanova ‘on an exclusive yacht trip’.

The heir to the Danish throne, 55, was photographed in his camouflage clothing on the Royal Household’s Instagram account as he explored Gribskov, Denmark’s fourth largest forest.

It comes amid furore in recent days after photos appeared in Spanish magazine Lecturas of the royal family on a night out in Madrid with glamorous Mexican socialite Genoveva – and without his wife, Princess Mary of Denmark, 51.

But it appears to be business as usual for Frederik as he took part in the traditional royal hunt – even after reports he met reality star Genoveva – the former daughter-in-law of the billionaire Duchess of Alba – for the first time during a luxury hunting trip in the mountains.

Genoveva, 47, who just a few days ago issued a blistering statement decrying “malicious” rumors that she is romantically involved with the prince, is currently seeking peace and quiet in San Sebastián at a home owned by the family of her ex-husband.

Wrapped up warm to brave the snowy conditions, Prince Frederik appeared relaxed in the collection of images from the traditional royal hunt, which takes place from October to January.

The caption read: ‘In the rain and sleet, a king hunt was held today in Gribskov. The Royal Hunts are the official hunts of the Royal House, which take place during the hunting season from October 1 to mid-January in the Danish national forests.

‘His Royal Highness The Crown Prince hosted today’s hunt, while Her Majesty The Queen hosted a hunt board tonight in the Dome Hall of Fredensborg Palace, where it is a tradition to toast “to all the good hunters”.’

One of the images shows a grinning Frederik, surrounded by his hunting party, as he warms himself by a roaring fire.

Susanna Griso, presenter of the Spanish TV show Espejo Público, recently claimed that Genoveva had become close to the heir to the Danish throne after they met during a luxury hunting trip in the mountains.

The host explains: ‘These are exclusive meetings, for which you have to pay a lot of money. All members of the royal family and the children of the major families are present. The trips are mainly organized in Germany and Austria.’

On these types of trips, usually in mountainous regions, guests pay thousands of euros to hunt European big game animals such as red deer, Alpine ibex, wild boar and wild mouflon sheep.

Yesterday, Denmark’s royal family broke their silence on the scandal, telling Danish publication BT that they “do not comment on rumors or innuendo.”

Both Frederick, King Charles III’s fourth cousin, and his wife Mary have yet to personally comment on the rumors.

The Danish royal family was shocked last week by reports that Frederik had spent a day and evening with Genoveva in Madrid.

Photos showed the couple strolling in Barrio el Jerónimos, where Genoveva lives, after taking a walk in El Retiro Park in the center of the Spanish capital.

Spanish magazine Lecturas reported that the pair had visited a Pablo Picasso exhibition earlier in the day, before heading to a restaurant to have dinner and watch a flamenco performance.

Amid the commotion caused by the photos, Prince Frederik has been going about his business at home this week, while Genoveva seeks peace and quiet in San Sebastián at a home owned by her ex-husband’s family.

The socialite, who has also dabbled in acting in the past and recently appeared in the Spanish version of Celebrity Masterchef, was married to Cayetano Martínez de Irujo for two years.

Spanish magazine Hello! reports that the socialite is staying at the Palace of Arbaizenea, a property once owned by the Duchess of Alba and left to her son Cayetano Martínez de Irujo. The magazine reports that Genoveva goes to San Sebastian when she wants to “disconnect” from public life.

It also reports that the socialite and her ex-husband, Cayetano Martínez de Irujo, have “excellent” terms, meaning she can stay at his family properties whenever she wants.

While Lecturas reported details of Genoveva’s night out with the Danish prince last week, it shared details of how the evening would unfold.

The magazine claimed that after visiting a Pablo Picasso exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, the couple strolled through El Retiro Park in central Madrid on the afternoon of October 25.

After the walk, around 7 p.m., Lecturas claimed that both Frederik and Genoveva went separately to her apartment building, and both emerged around 9 p.m., two hours later, both having changed their clothes to evening wear.

In photos from the evening, Genoveva has ditched her chic camel coat with a tie belt in favor of a white shirt, black wide-leg trousers and a black jacket worn on her shoulders.

Meanwhile, Frederik seems to have changed from a navy blue jacket and brown trousers to a white shirt and dark trousers with a neat dark jacket. Again, they are said to have come out of the building separately, but got into the same white car.

The magazine claimed the pair had seen a flamenco performance at a Spanish restaurant, El Corral de la Moreria, which ended at midnight.

Genoveva and her ex-husband (pictured together in 2020) are said to have an 'excellent' relationship

It was also claimed that they remained seated at their table, which was flanked by two of the Danish prince’s bodyguards, while other customers left, waiters finished their shifts and the lights were switched off.

Lecturas claimed the pair didn’t leave the restaurant until 1 a.m., when they walked out onto the street and got into a car. As a ‘courtesy gesture’, Lecturas reports that Crown Prince Frederik opened the car door for his dinner companion.

The next day, the magazine claimed that the heir to the Danish throne was taken by car to the airport, where he flew to Denmark.

Following the publication of the photos, Genoveva issued a statement to Hola! denies any romantic involvement with the prince.

A statement from the socialite said: ‘I categorically deny the statements indicating a romantic relationship between Prince Frederick and me.’

She added: “Any statement of this type not only completely lacks the truth, but also maliciously misrepresents the facts.

“This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take care of the relevant steps to protect my rights to honor, truth and privacy.”

Primo and Scilla led us deeper into the forests near Amandola, in central Italy. Over a babbling brook, up a muddy slope, over mossy tree branches, through a tangle of brambles and vines, the dogs covered acres of ground. For nearly three hours, their olfactory senses were on high alert for white truffles, a delicacy with rising prices, largely because they are extremely threatened by climate change.

Gram for gram, the white truffle is one of the most expensive foods in the world. In Italy, fresh white truffles cost as much as 4,500 euros per kilogram (or almost $2,200 per pound), according to Coldiretti, Italy’s largest agricultural trade group. As soon as they are shaved onto a plate of risotto or roasted quail in the best restaurants in the world, the price will multiply again, which will make their “white goldnickname. Acquerello in San Francisco offers a $495 truffle tasting menu (excluding wine and tax). Trufflephiles in London And Dubai can expect an equally expensive check.

Last year, a one and a half kilo specimen was sold at an auction in Alba, Italy fetched a record price of €184,000 (almost $200,000). Despite the supply constraints, bidders will converge on Alba, Italy’s truffle capital, on Sunday to do it all again.

With more extreme weather, shrinking forest habitat and high demand, sky-high prices will be the norm. say truffle experts.

The Tuber magnatum Pico, or white truffle, has always been difficult to find. (Attempts to grow it on truffle farms have resulted in some breakthroughs from scientists, but these are not enough to meet the rising demand from truffle fans.) In Italy, the truffles grow in selected places and colonize near the roots of oak, beech and poplar trees.

Truffles obtain nutrients from and nourish their woody neighbors. Given enough moisture and cool air, they fruit and ripen underground, signaling to dogs and woodland creatures where they are.

During the recent hunt in the woods near Amandola, Alessio Galiè, a 38-year-old tartufaio, or truffle hunter, pointed out the scenes of previous conquests, including the six he unearthed earlier this week. Meanwhile, Primo and Scilla patrolled with their noses to the ground. Every now and then they picked up a scent. The anticipation of a score seemed as thick as the morning mist.

As the hours passed, Mr. Galiè resorted to some tricks to keep the dogs focused. Whenever he lost sight of them, he hid a few truffles deep in the ground. When the dogs noticed a scent, they would walk back and dig it up, earning a treat. But that’s as much action as the dogs got. There were no truffles that day, Mr. Galiè concluded gloomily, waving his catch ghetto, a harpoon-like kick.

If there are no truffles to be found, something is wrong.

A bone-dry summer and a drought in the fall have thrown this year’s truffle trade into disarray. The same can be said of last year and the year before that. “The climate is not good,” said Mr Galiè. (The climate has also been blamed for Italy’s olive oil crisis.)

The ancients called these aromatic fungi, which appear on the market for a few weeks every autumn, ‘the food of the gods’. Some consider them aphrodisiacs for the endorphin-rushing essence they pack.

“The calls start coming in the summer,” months before the official start of the season in mid-October, says Roberto Saracino, founder of Liaison West Distribution, an Italian truffle distributor based in Vernon, California, whose clients include top restaurants in Las Vegas, San Francisco and neighboring Los Angeles. It’s important that he lives up to their expectations, he said. “I don’t have a crystal ball.”

It was even worse last year, when the usual spring and autumn rains failed to materialize and yields dropped. The price at the time was €5,000 per kilogram. “Global warming, or whatever we want to call it, is definitely driving a downward trend in the availability of truffles,” Mr. Saracino said.

The high price tag is a big point of discussion among Italian truffle hunters, including Coldiretti estimates more than 73,000 to count. Most Italian truffle hunters see the chase as an excuse to bond with nature, dogs and other truffle lovers, says Giancarlo Marini, who runs an Italian truffle export company. Marini Tartufiin the Italian region of Marche.

“But in the back of his mind, every time the hunter goes into the woods, there’s a chance that today will also be a good day’s work,” he added. The big payout mentality has a dark side; the pastime is marred by a spate of dog poisonings by territorial truffle hunters.

After arriving empty in the forest, the next stop was a truffle fair in Amandola. In a room near the community theater, vendors displayed their aromatic finds. A seller took a truffle out from under a glass and weighed it: 16 grams, no bigger than a walnut. Price: €40. The seller refused to negotiate. Sold!

A man has revealed how his identity was stolen by fraudsters who used it to scam people out of thousands of pounds – before his story was shared in a new documentary.

James Blake, from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, joined Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary on This Morning to share his harrowing experience, which resulted in tonight’s BBC Three programme, Hunting for the catfish Crime Gang.

The 30-year-old entrepreneur revealed he received messages from women accusing him of defrauding them of tens of thousands of pounds.

James, owner of a digital marketing agency, decided to track down the fraudsters and discovered that not only are the victims being scammed, but the scammers themselves are often victims of human trafficking and abuse by the gangs that orchestrate these crimes.

Speaking on the ITV show, he said: ‘A few profiles popped up and initially I thought this was someone in their bedroom messing around and I thought nothing of it.

James Blake, from Lisburn, Northern Ireland, joined Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary on This Morning to share his harrowing experience, which resulted in tonight’s BBC Three programme, Hunting The Catfish Crime Gang

‘[The accounts] I had all my photos, photos of my family, my cars, my team in the company and at first I thought, this is funny, kind of bizarre, but it’s probably a kid messing around.

‘But over time it got worse and worse, to the point where I was waking up to five to 10 messages a day from people saying I was chatting with you on dating apps and on social media.

“Unfortunately, I also got the strange notification of someone saying I had invested money with this person, or that I had sent him money and he had lost.”

James explained that it all came to a head when a man left a one-star review on his company’s page and said: ‘Don’t use this company, this man likes to mess with other people’s wives.’

He said: ‘Obviously I see that going ‘what the hell is this’, so I messaged him and we chatted.

‘He had shared screenshots with me. His wife had been talking to a fake of mine online and decided to divorce him. She sent him an email throwing him out of the house.”

James admitted that at that moment he knew the situation was serious because people had a lot to lose.

The entrepreneur revealed that he reported the fake profiles on Instagram, but they were not removed because they “didn’t violate the community guidelines.” He also said he spoke to police, who told him there was nothing they could do.

After going to the press as a last resort, James said it helped a bit and decided to make a documentary about his experiences.

He traveled to Thailand for the program, where he learned about the sophisticated operation behind the scam.

He said: ‘I end up traveling to South East Asia and what I discover is just astonishing and I don’t think most viewers of the documentary will expect it to go this way.

‘It turns out the people behind these fake profiles aren’t kids in their bedrooms, in fact there are people who are in huge office facilities, these offices wouldn’t look out of place in Canary Wharf.

‘This type of fraud is a multi-billion dollar industry, but the sad thing is that these buildings are filled with thousands of people who are actively defrauding people, but even sadder than that, they are being forced to do so.

“A lot of these people come to these places thinking they’re going to get legitimate jobs and then they’re forced to rip people off. It’s terrible, they are trafficked through criminal organizations, they are dehumanized, they are beaten and electrocuted.

“They are given insane sales targets for scamming people and if they don’t meet them they are taken advantage of. It’s terrible.’

James warned others to protect themselves online by branding their content so scammers can’t use it.

A spokesperson for the Police Service of Northern Ireland told Mail Online: ‘Police received a report in September 2021 but no criminal offenses were identified.

‘Information was provided on online security and advice on reporting fake profiles to the relevant social media companies.’

Anyone who feels they have fallen victim to any form of scam, online or otherwise, should report it to their local police.

Hunting The Catfish Crime Gang airs on BBC Three on Monday, October 23 at 9pm.
