A young lawyer has been identified as the man killed in a suspected hit-and-run in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

Mitch East, 28, was found with serious head and chest injuries by a passer-by on Fletcher Street, Tamarama, just after 4am on Sunday.

Despite the efforts of police and paramedics, he died at the scene.

Mr. East, who grew up in New Zealand, had been dropped off on the street by an Uber driver moments before he was hit, police said. Daily telegram.

Mr East studied law in his home country and held notable positions as a senior adviser to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch terrorist attack and as a lawyer at the major national firm Meredith Connell.

He moved to Australia around mid-2022 to work for his current employer, the large firm Arnold Bloch Leibler.

A spokesperson for Arnold Bloch Leibler told Daily Mail Australia that all staff had been informed of the tragedy via an email on Monday morning.

Police have revealed they are looking for the driver of a white Subaru Outback, which was spotted on CCTV in the area around the same time as the crash.

Appearing at Sunrise on Monday, NSW Police Inspector Jason Hogan urged the driver to come forward.

“It is a cowardly act to drive away after colliding with another human being,” he said.

“They really need to go to the local police station before we knock on their door.”

Inspector Hogan would not confirm whether detectives believe the driver is local, but said police are currently following ‘all lines of inquiry’ as to where the person may live.

A man who died in a water-skiing accident on the Murray River near the NSW-Victoria border has been identified as a loving father and husband.

Matthew Arnall, 42, was injured while racing in the Robinvale Euston 80 race at around 11am on Saturday and could not be resuscitated by paramedics.

Ski Racing Victoria canceled the event for Saturday and Sunday.

“As a ski racing community, we are here to support the affected family and team members and the wider ski racing community at this very sad time,” the statement said.

‘We would like to thank everyone for their efforts and support, our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.’

Heartbroken friends and family have paid tribute to the father-of-two, who lived with his wife Tara in the town of Crookwell, near Goulburn.

Kaly Smith said he was a “true legend of a guy,” a beloved member of the “ski racing family.”

“You were a giver, the kindest yet roughest soul, but always put others first. We are heartbroken for Tara and the boys,” she wrote on social media.

“We will miss your crazy antics, a true gentleman taken too soon. How life isn’t fair.’

‘I’m sure the boys will have a few beers for you tonight. Rest in peace friend.’

The latest incident comes after the death of a man during the Southern 80 water ski race last month, also on the Murray River.

Trucker Luke Wentworth, in his early 40s, died after suffering catastrophic injuries in the first hour of the event.

It is understood the speedboat Mr Wentworth was towing was traveling at high speed when it made a sharp turn, causing him to crash into a tree.

A source who crashed in the early hours of the morning, killing four people, was chased after a drug deal went wrong, a source has claimed.

James Doherty, 41, Benjamin Watego, 47, and Sophie-Lee Fullagar, 24, all died at the scene, along with another passenger, when their Mazda BT-50 ute left the road in Wardell, near Ballina in the north of New South Wales, on February 24.

A passing motorist discovered the mangled wreckage on Back Channel Road around 5:45 a.m. and called emergency services.

A source close to the victims claims that Mr Doherty – who previously dated Ms Fullagar, was a known drug dealer in the Bryon area – and another car chased the car to rob him.

“I know who they are after, but I don’t want to say because I don’t want to be involved in the drama,” the source told Daily Mail Australia.

“He had drugs and cash on him.”

Once the vehicle flipped and hit a tree, the source claims the other car sped away.

“I think the other car saw what happened, but they drove away.

“They would never stop after a crash like that, especially if they were chasing them.”

When Daily Mail Australia asked NSW Police whether it is investigating a second party involved in the crash, a spokesperson said: “The matter is being investigated by detectives and a brief of evidence is being prepared for the coroner.”

An outpouring of grief follows for the three identified victims.

A friend of Mr Watego wrote: ‘My brother, I will miss you very much.

“You were by my side through the good, the bad and the lows.

One of the acquaintances who unknowingly helped NSW police officer Beau Lamarre-Condon after he allegedly killed two men is a fellow officer.

Lamarre-Condon has been charged with the murders of Channel Ten presenter Jesse Baird and his Qantas flight attendant friend Luke Davies at a house in Paddington, in Sydney’s east.

Police are desperately trying to find out what happened to Baird and Davies who were last seen a week ago – with the search also including locations in Cronulla, Newcastle and several dams in the Southern Tablelands.

One of the alleged crime scenes, identified on Saturday, is at a residential home on Karoola Road in the Newcastle suburb of Lambton.

Daily Mail Australia visited the site on Monday afternoon, where a vehicle belonging to an acquaintance of Lamarre-Condon is covered in fingerprint dust after being examined by forensic specialists.

That acquaintance was identified by 7News on Monday evening as fellow officer Renee Fortuna.

Police alleged another vehicle – a white van – was used to transport and dispose of the bodies of Baird and Davies. Lamarre-Condon is not believed to be assisting officers in the search for the remains of the two men.

A neighbor said Ms Fortuna had not returned to her home after the police raid and even left her fingerprint-stained car behind.

Police alleged at a press conference on Monday that Ms Fortuna had let Lamarre-Condon borrow her hose to clean the inside of his Toyota HiAce van, which he had rented from Sydney Airport.

There is no suggestion that Ms Fortuna knew what Lamarre-Condon allegedly did or was involved in any criminal offence.

Former homicide detective Charlie Bezzina said the fingerprint powder on the car would have been used to find fingerprints of the suspect or the deceased.

Police allege the 28-year-old senior officer was in Newcastle on Thursday evening he cleaned the van before returning to Bondi p.m. on Fridaypolice station.

“We can advise that the suspect remained in the Newcastle area until approximately 5am and returned to the city at around 6.15am on Friday morning,” Deputy Commissioner Dave Hudson said.

Police allege Lamarre-Condon left Sydney in the rented HiAce van on Wednesday and stopped in Goulburn to buy an angle grinder, padlock and weights.

He has been charged with two counts of murder and remains in police custody after being denied bail while investigators continue to figure out how the two men were allegedly killed.

NSW Police continued the search for the remains of Baird and Davies on Monday, deploying divers and focusing on dams at Bungonia, near Goulburn.

“As part of the ongoing investigation… police have determined this [an alleged] crime scene on Hazelton Road in Bungonia in the Southern Tablelands,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Divers searched for ‘objects of interest’ at two dams on Hazelton Road, about 35km south of Goulburn, after intelligence last week placed accused murderer Lamarre-Condon at a rural spot and on Monday revelations from the police commissioner that he had a female acquaintance had brought along.

That acquaintance, police said, was an “innocent party” and was unaware of Lamarre-Condon’s alleged crime and cooperated with police.

‘The acquaintance is not a suspect in this case. We believe she was an innocent officer,” he said.

“We believe he may have been connected to that property in some way through a previous relationship of his.”

Alipur factory fire: Eight of the 11 people killed in a devastating fire that engulfed a paint factory in Delhi's Alipur suburb on Thursday have been identified by their families as Delhi Police consider conducting DNA test on the unidentified victims to determine their identity. , If necessary.

The eight identified victims are: Jain (62), Ram Surat Singh (44), Vishal Gaund (19), Anil Thakur (46), Pankaj Kumar (29), Shubham (19), Mira (44) and Brijkishore (19) .

An officer said some victims were identified based on the clothing they were wearing at the time of the incident and other items.

If necessary, DNA test will be conducted on the unidentified bodies, he added.

The factory was run illegally?

In a statement, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said the building in which the fire broke out was being used illegally for mixing chemical paints. The municipality says it regrets the tragic incident.

A senior police officer said an investigation is underway to determine whether the paint factory was being operated illegally and what led to the fire incident in which the owner of the establishment, Ashok Kumar Jain, was killed in the incident along with ten of his staff. staff.

The factory – Om Suns Paint – has been operating since 2017, he said.

The victims were locked inside and could not escape

“It has come to light that the owner locked the factory from inside while work was in progress,” the officer added that it is suspected that the factory gate was locked from outside, preventing workers from escaping from the building after it was enveloped. in flames.

Forensic experts have collected samples from the scene, the officer said, adding: “Prima facie, it is suspected that the fire broke out due to a short circuit and spread to an area where chemicals were kept, triggering several explosions has lead.”

Fire preceded by explosion

The incident took place at Dayal market in Alipur. The factory housed chemical factories. The fire was preceded by an explosion and quickly spread to nearby buildings, including a drug rehabilitation center and eight stores.

Locals claim that the fire brigade arrived too late, causing the fire to spread to other buildings.

A Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said a call about the fire was received at 5.25 pm and the fire brigade rushed to the spot, but there was a delay due to a massive traffic jam near GT Karnal Road.

Delhi Police has barricaded a number of roads leading to Alipur due to farmer unrest.

Delay in fire brigade response?

Sources claimed that the delay was due to unavailability of firefighters at a nearby fire station as they were sent to another place, news agency PTI reported.

Police said while the factory owner was killed in the incident, his son, Akhil Jain of Sonipat in Haryana, is being questioned.

A case has been registered against the factory owner's son under sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 308 (attempt to culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The DFS official said 22 fire tenders had been pressed into service to douse the flames.

Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa was being interviewed live from Times Square by Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday night when their exchange took a surprising turn.

The topic was what both men seemed to agree on: a migrant-fueled wave of crime and chaos that they said had engulfed New York, amid a surge of arrivals from the southern border into the city over the past two years.

Suddenly, Mr. Sliwa had a prime-time example. As he spoke, the six angels in red jackets flanking him slipped out of frame.

“Our guys just took down one of the migrant men here at the corner of 42nd and Seventh where this is all happening,” Mr. Sliwa said, pointing away from the camera.

“Can you pan the camera?” Mr. Hannity asked his cameraman.

The cameraman turned and captured the angels confront a slightly built man in a hooded sweatshirt, throw him to the ground and put him in a headlock.

“He's out of control,” Mr. Sliwa said as the camera turned away and Mr. Hannity switched to criticizing President Biden over his administration's border policies.

However, on Wednesday, police said the man was not a migrant, but a Bronx resident. They also said he was issued a summons for disorderly conduct after trying to disrupt the interview and for being “noisy, disorderly and threatening on a busy sidewalk.” He was not charged with shoplifting, as Mr Sliwa had suggested on air.

The episode came in the wake of two high-profile criminal cases that have provided fodder for those critical of the migrants' effect on the city: the arrests of about a half-dozen people during a robbery and an attack on two police officers in the city. a brawl in Times Square.

While Mr. Adams and other administration officials have been clear in saying that the vast majority of migrants coming to New York are law-abiding, the mayor has also repeatedly said the influx will “destroy” the city, and Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban said in announcing the arrests that “a wave of migrant crime has swept our city.”

Murad Awawdeh, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, said Wednesday that rhetoric from the mayor and others had emboldened a “vigilante” like Mr. Sliwa to take the law into his own hands in a way that threatened all new citizens. Yorkers.

“This is what happens when Eric Adams and Republicans go to great lengths to scapegoat immigrants for every problem they have failed to solve,” Mr. Awawdeh said.

“It has to stop,” he added.

A spokesman for Mr. Adams declined to comment on the episode involving Mr. Sliwa, saying New York City had provided shelter and care to more than 175,000 migrants while Republicans in Congress continued to block comprehensive immigration reform.

Asked about the live broadcast of the confrontation on Mr. Hannity's show — and Mr. Sliwa's claim, without evidence, that the man being detained was a migrant — Fox News said in a statement that “the situation occurred during a live television broadcast” and that the network had “updated its audience as more information became available from the NYPD”

The Guardian Angels have been present in New York since the late 1970s, when Mr. Sliwa founded the group to patrol the streets and subways in an era of rampant crime. Mr. Sliwa admitted years ago that he fabricated some of the group's early crime-fighting efforts to gain publicity and raise its profile.

After distancing himself from the confrontation on Tuesday evening, Mr. Hannity returns to Mr. later in the broadcast. Sliwa for an explanation of what the public had seen.

“He had shoplifted first, the Guardian Angels saw him and stopped him – he resisted and let's say we gave him a little pain relief,” Mr Sliwa said. “His mother in Venezuela felt the tremors.”

He added, “We have to take back 42nd Street, Sean. These illegal immigrants think this street is theirs. They think they control the night. This is our country.”

In an interview on Wednesday, Mr. Sliwa, who as a Republican candidate lost the 2021 election to Mr. Adams, said he had merely repeated what he had heard from people in the crowd.

He also said the Guardian Angels confronted the man after he attacked a female member of the group. It was after the initial encounter, he said, that people gathered nearby said the man had stolen items from area stores. A backpack found by police, Mr Sliwa said, contained about 10 items of children's clothing that still had anti-theft tags.

When asked why he would tell Mr Hannity with such certainty what the man's background was, Mr Sliwa again said he had simply passed on what he had been told.

“Is it possible he wasn't a migrant?” he said. “Naturally.”

A swimmer who went missing from a Victorian beach on Sunday has been identified as Jona Kinivuwai, 20.

Mr Kinivuwai was swept out to sea while swimming with two friends at Number Sixteen Beach in Rye on the Mornington Peninsula, 100km south of Melbourne.

His older brother, Joji, said it has been a terrible time for the family.

“He is the youngest of four and we are all very protective of him,” he told the newspaper Herald Sun on Monday.

“When we heard the news last night, we were all going through a really hard time.”

He said Jonah, whose birthday was on Australia Day, loved sport, especially rugby.

Family members, including Joji, another brother and their father, have remained on the beach since Jonah's disappearance, desperately hoping for good news.

“The police and SES have done a great job and we really appreciate it,” Joli said. “We just want him back with us.”

Bad weather conditions, including strong winds, complicated the search on Monday.

Police said search efforts are being conducted primarily by land and air because conditions are too “treacherous” for water searches.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 7 p.m. on Sunday evening after reports that some swimmers were in trouble.

The two men swimming with Jonah managed to make it back to shore safely and were taken to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition.

The police assume that the men ended up in a crack.

Earlier this weekend, a man drowned while diving in the waters off a nearby pier.

The man, who has yet to be identified, was found at 10am on Saturday by other divers who pulled him ashore at Rye Pier.

Other divers attempted to revive the man, but emergency services arrived shortly afterwards and confirmed he had died.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his drowning and will prepare a report for the coroner.

Earlier on Saturday, another man drowned when his boat capsized after being hit by a large wave at Barwon Heads, about 20km south-east of Geelong, Victoria, about 6.50am.

There were two men on the boat, one who was trapped underneath and subsequently drowned and another who was rescued by a jet skier.

The 61-year-old Moriac man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 66-year-old man from Anglesea was pulled from the water by police and pronounced dead at the scene.
