Shuen Chun-wa, 81, and her husband rushed to a green bus along with 20 other Hong Kong residents, dragging empty suitcases. They had purple tour stickers on their jackets and were heading shopping in Shenzhen, a bustling Chinese city north of the border with Hong Kong.

It was Ms. Shuen's second trip to Shenzhen to find bargains in a year. The last time she got dental implants. “You can count how much I have to pay,” she said. She paid $9,000 in Shenzhen for a procedure that would have cost $25,000 in Hong Kong. 'I don't have the money. So I went to Shenzen.”

Since China opened its borders in January 2023 after several years of pandemic isolation, Hong Kong residents have made Shenzhen a weekend destination for shopping, dining and, yes, even the dentist.

Fed up with high costs, poor service and limited choice at home, Hong Kongers are heading to Shenzhen to shop for groceries, eat out and discover new bubble tea shops. Hong Kong remains one of the most unaffordable cities in the world, and its battered economy and plummeting stock market have made everyone more money-conscious. In China, a stagnant economy has led to a steady decline in prices, which have fallen the most since the 2009 global financial crisis and are bordering on a phenomenon known as deflation.

The retail migration is a reversal of the days when mainland Chinese flocked to Hong Kong to buy everything from luxury bags to baby food. For Hong Kongers, the slowdown in China offers a rare price drop. All it takes is a short bus or metro ride across the border to the mainland.

On social media and chat groups, hundreds of thousands of Hong Kongers are talking about new food offerings in Shenzhen, such as pastries filled with seaweed and pork floss. They share tips on where to find bubble tea, including a place where the tea is brewed by a robot. Tour operators that once focused on package holidays to Japan and Thailand are now also organizing buses to shopping centers in Shenzhen to visit stores such as Sam's Club.

Some weekends there are so many Hong Kongers in Shenzhen's malls that locals joke that the visitors are 'occupying' them.

Their presence in Shenzhen, a city of 17 million inhabitants, is visible everywhere. Some stores are adapting their advertisements by using Cantonese, Hong Kong's local Chinese language, to attract tourists to their stores. Restaurants offer discounts to customers with phone numbers that include Hong Kong area code 852. In a large shopping center near a border crossing, opticians and dental clinics promise a cheaper service than Hong Kong, requiring only a short journey. “Cross the border to check your teeth without any distance,” enticed a giant neon pink ad.

On a busy day, the GoodFeel Dentist clinic could see more than 100 customers from Hong Kong, said Lan Xinghua, a sales director at GoodFeel Dentist. He said the company's turnover doubled when the border with Hong Kong opened last year. To generate even more sales, the clinic set up a stall near the border crossing at Luohu Port. Employees are expected to speak both Cantonese and Mandarin, the official language of China.

“Hong Kong customers spend more money and generally don't bargain too much,” Mr Lan said. Sometimes entire families come to have their teeth cleaned and repaired.

The two cities are separated by a border that distinguishes mainland China from Hong Kong, a Chinese territory that long operated with a degree of autonomy but has increasingly come under Beijing's rule.

Many Hong Kongers who traveled to the mainland for shopping had not been there since 2019. Then pro-democracy protests swept Hong Kong and the government responded with a crackdown, eradicating the political tolerance that had distinguished Hong Kong from mainland China.

Now people in Hong Kong, using online forums that are censored or inaccessible on the mainland, are discussing whether it is safe and politically acceptable for people who disagree with the Chinese government to visit Shenzhen, even just to shop and to dine.

For many, the answer is 'yes'.

“Life and political opinion can be separated,” said Chak Yeung, 31, a Hong Kong resident who works in the technology industry. He has been involved in student organizations participating in protests in the past, but he doesn't see any conflict between his political views and what he does for fun on the weekends.

Hong Kong has a separate currency from that of China, and its merchants still rely heavily on cash for payments. The main form of payment in China is digital: the two main payment apps, WeChat and Alipay, have only recently become available to Hong Kongers and not everyone is familiar with them. To help visiting shoppers, posters in Shenzhen's stores and subway stations explain how Hong Kong residents can use WeChat and Alipay. Tourists can also pay in Hong Kong dollars and not convert their money into Chinese renminbi.

But paying is not always smooth. On her most recent trip, Ms. Shuen used cash to buy dandelions that her son uses in his Chinese medicine practice in Hong Kong, as well as some dried shrimp. But she said paying in cash was difficult.

Exploring Shenzhen can also be difficult. Two women from Hong Kong had to ask a Shenzhen resident, Kristen Lu, 28, how to use local navigation apps on their phones. They didn't realize that Google Maps doesn't work in mainland China because the company is blocked.

Mr. Yeung, the technical assistant, has visited Shenzhen twice in the past year. He enjoys eating hot pot and playing archery and basketball in a sports and entertainment complex. He said the workers he encounters in Shenzhen are more pleasant.

The service in Hong Kong is grimmer and more hasty, he said.

For Iris Yiu, 29, a student pursuing a master's degree in Hong Kong, going to Shenzhen is all about food. She said she is a fan of spicy food, a staple in parts of southern China, and in November she and two friends went to Shenzhen and ordered “crazy” from a famous Sichuan food chain called Taier Sauerkraut Fish. They weren't ready yet. Next they stopped at Bobo Chicken, a restaurant that serves vegetables and meat in small bites on sticks that cost 14 cents each.

Ms Yiu said local customers stared at them as they grabbed as many sticks as they could. Someone at a nearby table said, “This is the style of Hong Kong people, as if they don't need money!”

Snow Wong, 28, heard about Shenzhen when her friends and colleagues returned from weekend trips. After so many rave reviews, Ms. Wong decided to try it herself.

She visited arcades and karaoke bars and discovered that the city had more interesting escape room games, her favorite pastime, than Hong Kong. She used Hong Kong dollars to pay for a visit to a spa near the Luohu border crossing.

Above all, Ms. Snow said, Shenzhen offered something that Hong Kong famously lacks: a slower pace.

“The pace of Shenzhen and Hong Kong is so different,” Ms Wong said. “Shenzhen is the place where I go to relax.”

A social media star who is addicted to plastic surgery has revealed the results of her latest procedure.

Mary Magdalene, 31, was left with an ‘alien uniboob’ earlier this year after one of her size 38J breast implants exploded in her chest.

She fixed it by having smaller implants put in, but now has much larger 1000cc implants installed in her breast.

The new implants contain expanders, a small port in the side of the implants that allows them to be filled with saline through a needle.

Many women with expanders choose to fill their implants themselves at home, increasing the size little by little over time until they reach enormous proportions.

Mary decided to go under the knife again to get new implants and explained to X that she wanted to get her nipples symmetrical and that she was excited to continue expanding her new breasts to epic dimensions.

‘My surgery went great!! My nipples are finally centered!!! Went from 900cc silicone implants to 1000cc expanders, which I will safely fill every few months until I reach the size I want,” she said.

‘I’ve had several lifts this year, so to be on the safe side I’ll probably have to fill less per session than before and I’m fine with that!’ she continued.

‘Last time I was in a hurry and it was all about SIZE and not about aesthetics. This time I’m going to treat my body with more care and focus more on the perfect ROUND bolt-on shape versus just the size.’

In a follow-up post, Mary reflected on her personal journey into plastic surgery.

‘Reducing has been a roller coaster, but if I hadn’t done that I wouldn’t have been able to achieve symmetry. It took me so many breast surgeries to correct the placement of my nipples, so I’m very excited about my new journey with big tits.’

Mary’s new outlook comes less than a year after she vowed to reverse her surgeries and return to a more natural look.

The Canadian model said at the time that her exploding implant was a “sign” for her to finally turn away from the surgeon’s scalpel once and for all.

“I’m not only going back to naturalness in my breasts, but also in other parts of my body,” she told her followers at the time.

In another post, the OnlyFans artist admitted that she was “trapped in an endless cycle” of plastic surgery, constantly going under the knife to fix botched procedures.

“It’s not a fun adventure anymore, it’s just exhausting in every way,” she said.

‘My time is being lost, my bank account, my energy, my health. And in the long run, you’re just digging yourself into a very expensive, time-consuming hole.”

Mary got her first boob job at the age of 21 in Mexico by a local dentist, which failed.

Over the years, her surgeries have included a brow lift, fat transfers, multiple nose and breast jobs, veneers, liposuction, BBLs on top of butt implants, porcelain veneers and more.

Some of her surgeries nearly killed her, including a dangerous procedure to ‘inflate’ her vagina so she could break the Guinness World Record for ‘the world’s thickest vagina’.

Because many of her operations were illegal, Mary traveled all over the world, from Colombia to Russia, performing various procedures.

She almost died several times and at one point her buttocks began to ‘rot’ after having illegal butt injections, which she sealed with superglue.

Lauren Goodger has declared she wants to get ‘really skinny’ and claims she’s ‘tired of her curves and big bum’ after admitting she’s had a bum lift and breast implants.

The TOWIE star, 37, previously promised another health kick after admitting earlier this year she found herself ‘ordering takeaways’ when she became a mum.

And it seems Lauren is determined to achieve her fitness goals as she revealed she is determined to lose weight.

Speaking to Closer Magazine, she explained: ‘I want to get really thin. I’m bored with my curves and a big *** – I’m over it.’

Lauren admitted that while she has no idea what dress size she is at the moment, she can fit into Zara size 12 trousers, but added that they are stretchy.

She continued: ‘I don’t know what size I want to get, it’s more about how I feel.’

Lauren eventually admitted she had a Brazilian butt lift in April, after previously denying she had the procedure to plump up her bum.

As the TOWIE star prepares to return to a more natural look, she revealed she had the surgery in 2017 and also had her breasts enlarged from a 34D to a 34E in 2013.

Lauren said she has “been unhappy for a while” and plans to soften her appearance to be “more natural.”

She said OK! Magazine: ‘For a few years now I’ve been thinking: ‘Why did I ever get my breasts done?’ I haven’t been happy for a while, but when I got pregnant with Larose, my breasts got even bigger and I hated the way I looked.

‘I look back at old photos from before breast enlargement and I had nice breasts. I wish I could go back to natural Lauren.”

The TV personality explained how she went to Turkey for a BBL, describing it as ‘the worst experience’ of her life.

Lauren said she desperately wants to have a “natural bum” again, but isn’t sure how to get it because “there is no procedure that can reverse the BBL.”

Lauren reportedly tried the Francis Diet earlier this year – a three-month program that requires her to control her calorie intake and follow a new exercise regimen – after expressing her determination to undergo a fitness overhaul.

She already told her followers in May that she wanted to ‘do something for myself’ and therefore started following a new training program.

She said: ‘Very intense but amazing results. This is my time. I’m starting with a three-month plan.’

Lauren has been sharing her gym workouts with her followers on Instagram, as she tests herself with weighted Russian twists with a medicine ball, sledding and lunges with her two-year-old daughter Larose.

A source then told OK! Magazine: ‘For Lauren, it’s not about losing weight or changing her body. She wants to feel good inside. When you eat better, you feel better.

‘She is so busy as a mother and is always on the go. She cooks healthy, home-cooked meals for Larose, but when it comes to herself, she orders takeout or goes to a drive-thru.

“She now has meal preps from Woo’d By Food, including things like chicken and rice, and fish and potatoes, and she does a lot of walking, yoga and stretching.”

Still, it seems like her attitude has changed now and she wants to lose weight to her pre-baby weight.

Lauren gave birth to her first daughter Larose in July 2021, and weeks afterward she quickly became pregnant with her second daughter.

Tragically, her second daughter Lorena died in July 2022, minutes after she was born after the umbilical cord was tied twice around her neck.

Lauren shares both children with her ex-boyfriend Charles Drury, who is eleven years her junior.

Charles was accused of assaulting her on the day of their daughter Lorena’s funeral.

He is also accused of “controlling or coercive behavior” against Lauren between August 1, 2020 and August 5, 2022.

Charles pleaded not guilty to the charges during a brief preliminary hearing at the court in the east London borough of Redbridge.

Judge Oscar Del Fabbro adjourned the case ahead of a further hearing at the same court on February 12, 2024, followed by a five-day trial, which began on March 18, 2024.

Meanwhile, the star also revealed this week that she is returning to the cast of The Only Way Is Essex after an 11-year absence.

The influencer told Closer that she plans to return to the reality show in February and has already started thinking about possible storylines.

Lauren was part of the original 2010 line-up for the show, which focused on her long-term relationship with Mark Wright, and left in 2012 following their breakup in series six.

She returned briefly in 2015 for The Only Way Is Essexmas and, looking to the future, said she wants to “meet Amy Childs and have lunch with the kids!”

Traumatic brain injuries leave more than five million Americans permanently disabled. They have difficulty concentrating on even simple tasks and often have to quit their jobs or drop out of school.

A study published on Monday has offered them a glimpse of hope. Five people with moderate to severe brain damage had electrodes implanted in their heads. As the electrodes stimulated their brains, their performance on cognitive tests improved.

If the results hold up in larger clinical trials, the implants could become the first effective therapy for chronic brain injury, the researchers said.

“This is the first evidence that you can switch the dial on this problem,” says Dr. Nicholas Schiff, a neurologist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York who led the study.

Gina Arata, one of the volunteers who received the implant, was 22 when a car accident left her with fatigue, memory problems and uncontrollable emotions. She abandoned her plans for law school and lived with her parents in Modesto, California, where she was unable to hold down a job.

In 2018, 18 years after the crash, Ms Arata received the implant. Her life has changed dramatically, she says. “I can be a normal person and have a conversation,” she said. “It’s amazing how I’ve seen myself improve.”

Dr. Schiff and his colleagues designed the test based on years of research into the structure of the brain. Those studies suggested that our ability to focus on tasks depends on a network of brain areas connected by long branches of neurons. The regions send signals to each other, creating a feedback loop that keeps the entire network active.

Sudden movements of the brain – for example in a car accident or a fall – can sever some long-distance connections in the network and cause people to fall into a coma, Dr. hypothesizes. Schiff and his colleagues. During recovery, the network may be able to power itself again. But if the brain is severely damaged, it may not recover completely.

Dr. Schiff and his colleagues have identified a structure deep in the brain as a crucial node in the network. Known as the central lateral nucleus, it is a thin layer of neurons the size and shape of an almond shell.

The human brain has two such structures, one in each hemisphere. They seem to help the brain calm itself at night for sleep and restart the brain in the morning. Stimulating the neurons in these regions can wake a sleeping ratDr.’s research has shown that Schiff demonstrated.

These studies raised the possibility that stimulating the central lateral nuclei could help people with traumatic brain injuries regain focus and attention.

Surgeons regularly implant electrodes in patients with Parkinson’s disease. The little electrical pulsesreleased by the implants hundreds of times per second commands neighboring neurons to fire their own signals, restoring some brain functions.

In 2018, Dr. Schiff and his colleagues recruited volunteers like Ms. Arata, who suffered from chronic problems for years after their accident. Before inserting the electrodes, the researchers gave the volunteers a series of tests to assess their ability to concentrate and switch tasks. For example, in one exam, the volunteers were each given a sheet of paper full of letters and numbers and had to draw a line connecting them as quickly as possible.

Before the surgery, the researchers scanned each volunteer’s brain to create an accurate map. Dr. Jaime Henderson, a neurosurgeon at Stanford University, guided the electrode through the brain to the central lateral nucleus.

Dr. Henderson implanted the electrodes in six volunteers, but one of them had to stop the study after developing a scalp infection. Starting one month after surgery, the remaining five volunteers underwent follow-up testing. On the letters and numbers exam, their scores rose anywhere from 15 to 52 percent.

To gain a broader understanding of the volunteers’ experiences, Dr. Joseph Fins, a medical ethicist at Weill Cornell Medicine, conducted a study series of interviews with them and their family members. Most volunteers, like Ms. Arata, said the implant made them look more like their former selves.

In contrast, the volunteer who saw the greatest improvement on cognitive tests responded tepidly. “I don’t think it hurts,” he said. “I just don’t know if it helped much.”

And yet that patient’s son observed significant changes, especially in his father’s self-awareness. “It is day and night,” said the son.

Dr. Steven Laureys, a neurologist at the University of Liege in Belgium who was not involved in the study, said the results supported the theory that attention and other forms of thinking depend on the brain-wide network. “There’s plenty of reason to believe it’s worth pursuing,” he said of the study.

Dr. Schiff and his colleagues are planning a much larger study of brain implants. “We’ll have to see how the data shakes out,” he said.

The central lateral nuclei are not the only regions that show promise as nodes in the brain network, said Dr. Alex Green, a neurosurgeon at the University of Oxford who was not involved in the study.

“We don’t really know yet what the best place to stimulate is,” said Dr. Green. He and his colleagues are preparing a brain injury study of their own to try electrodes in an area called the pedunculopontine nucleus.

Dr. Laureys acknowledged that implant surgeries would be expensive, but argued that society should recognize the millions of people who suffer from traumatic brain injuries. “This is a silent epidemic,” he said.

Selling Sunset star Chelsea Lazkani shared a video to her Instagram on Monday detailing her Thanksgiving preparations.

Specifically, the Netflix star, 30, shared her recipe for Potatoes Au Gratin with her 622,000 followers.

The well-produced video showed the glamorous bombshell going through the steps of putting together the dish.

She shared the exact recipe in the comments. But instead of embracing the spirit of Thanksgiving, one person decided to give her appearance a pointed barb.

“Implants ripple,” the troll noted.

“Kind of what happens when you exclusively breastfeed two children for four years,” she clapped back.

In the video, the luxury real estate agent wears a white, low-cut tank top as he makes the dish.

Unfortunately, the first troll wasn’t the only commenter to criticize her breasts.

“She probably should have replaced them. They look a bit strange and extremely asymmetrical,” another critical person commented, while another wrote: “Never do cheap implants.”

“They look horrible,” someone said from the safety of their keyboard.

Luckily, not everyone is so cruel and many of her fans came to her defense.

“She is still beautiful and no one has a body, enhanced or not, that is perfect,” one wrote, while another aptly said: “I will never understand why people shame strangers.”

And the cooking video wasn’t a one-off for the mother of two. She regularly shares food content on her Instagram.

Chelsea competed on the hit real estate show in season five of 2022, leaving Heather El Moussa, Chrishell Stause and Davina Potraz worried about their own jobs and clients.

She grew up in London with Nigerian parents and received her BA from the University of Birmingham and her MA from the University of Dundee in Scotland.

Chelsea moved to the US when she met her husband Jeff Lazkani. She met him while visiting Los Angeles in 2015. ‘I stayed because I fell in love. It was the best decision I ever made,” she explained on Instagram.

The couple married in 2017 in Newport Beach, California and welcomed two children, a son named Maddox, five, and a daughter named Melia, four.

Denise Richards opens up about her feelings toward her daughter, Sami Sheen, who wants breast implants.

“I’m trying to talk her out of it because, and the reason why I’m talking her out of it is because I didn’t know how toxic [they are] when I was 19,” Richards, 52, said Rush. “And it is not an easy operation. It is painful!”

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum, who plans to remove her own breast implants, had hers done at the same age as her daughter, 19, whom she shares with her ex-husband Charlie Sheen. (The two, who called it quits in 2006, also share daughter Lola, 18.) “As a teenager I was made fun of [because my boobs] They were mosquito bites,” she said.

For Sami, who has been ordered to quit vaping before getting D-cup breast implants, plastic surgery has been on her wish list for years. “I was ten years old and said, ‘I can’t wait to have big boobs like my mom.’ All my friends were getting boobs and I was like, ‘Okay, when’s my turn?’ I used to stuff my bra with socks and stuff,” she said.

It’s no secret that many Hollywood stars have breast implants. But what you may not know is that no matter how popular the cosmetic enhancement is, celebrities aren’t afraid to say goodbye to them for good either. Sami made a name for herself as a model on OnlyFans, a subscription-based website where creators share NSFW content. Fans must pay $19.99 per month to access all her posts.

At first, Sheen, 58, told me We weekly that he was not involved in this career decision. “This didn’t happen under my roof,” he said Us at the time. “I don’t condone this, but since I can’t prevent it, I urged her to keep it classy and creative and not sacrifice her integrity.”

Since this statement, the Two and a half Men alum told Rush that he has changed his position. “I had a knee-jerk reaction to it because of the reputation that preceded it. I was like, ‘Oh, this can only end badly,'” he explained. “That goes against my normal approach to things, but I think if your child is involved, it’s a whole different alternative altogether of circumstances.”

He continued: “She is doing this and it can only be a much more successful and enjoyable experience with the support of myself, her mother and others. I have to have faith and just know in my heart that all her virtues and everything wonderful that is her, her, goes with her. I believe she is incorruptible.”

For her part, Richards wasn’t entirely on board with her daughter’s career at first either. But now she has changed her tune and even launched her own channel.

In July 2022, Richards explained her decision to support Sami Us. “My parents have always supported my career and they did not judge me for the decisions I made when I was working and starting out as an actress,” she said. “I think it’s important – whatever my daughters do – to support them no matter what. I want them to feel empowered and [to be] empowering them… and that is something that I find very important and something that I will always support.”

A rebellious mom who was criticized by ‘mean moms’ for setting up a fundraising page that ‘begs’ for breast augmentations has hit back – claiming they also want mommy makeovers ‘but can’t afford it’.

Jennifer Bodzasiova, from north London, revealed she had “perfect” perky breasts before she had her two kids, but claims breastfeeding made them flabby and droopy.

The mother-of-two says she “hates” looking in the mirror with her nipples “pointing down” and jokes that they “say good morning to my navel every day.”

Jennifer says she’s forced to wear clothes that cover her and she has to keep changing outfits to make sure her cleavage doesn’t “look too bad.”

The 21-year-old is raising £5,000 for a breast lift and implants, claiming the procedure would be ‘life-changing’ and boost her confidence.

Since sharing the GoFundMe on her TikTok channel, Jennifer says she’s surprised by the negative comments from other moms criticizing her for fundraising during the cost-of-living crisis.

The TikTok influencer says they have accused her of “begging” for money when many “can’t afford food” but has hit back by claiming that those criticizing her probably want surgery themselves but “can’t afford it” .

Jennifer said, “I never thought about getting a breast augmentation [before] because my breasts were perfect before I had kids.

“I don’t remember what bra size I was, but I was quite short, maybe an A cup.

“They were pretty perky and I could wear dresses or braless camisoles without them falling down.

“After I had my first and breastfed him, they subsided a bit, which I wasn’t too worried about, but they weren’t too bad because I only breastfed him for a short time.”

“When I got pregnant with my second and I breastfed her for about three to four months, my breasts went all saggy.

“I really don’t like them because I can’t wear nice bras – either they don’t fit me or I can’t wear nice dresses because they look very saggy.

“I hate looking in the mirror and seeing them like this. I have to keep changing my outfits to make sure my cleavage doesn’t look too bad.

“I posted a vlog of me going to my consultation and explained why I want to have it done.

“I really expected people to support me — a lot of moms follow me, so they know exactly how it feels.

“But as soon as I said I’d set up a GoFundMe to pay for it, I got quite a bit of a negative response.

“People said, ‘we’re in a cost-of-living crisis, a lot of people can’t afford food and you want them to pay for it.’ ‘Begging for money’ is how they say it.

“I’m not forcing anyone to pay for it, I just said if you can help I’d appreciate it. I expected that the mothers would at least understand.

“But when I looked at the profiles, most of the commenters were moms who were pretty mean about it because I think they want mommy makeovers too, but they can’t afford it.”

Jennifer’s GoFundMe page says, “Hello, I’m Jennifer, a mother of two.

“As a mother of two who breastfed her babies for a few months, it changed my body dramatically, especially my breasts, now that I’m uncomfortable in my own body, it just doesn’t feel like me.”

“I’ve been thinking about this a lot, if it’s really necessary, and if it’s going to make me happier, make me feel a little bit more like myself, and finally have the confidence to look and feel good about everything. I wear, and it will.

“My breasts were perfect before I had kids and if they were still the same I wouldn’t need breast implants and a lift but unfortunately breastfeeding has changed them and I hate my breasts saying good morning to my belly button every day (yes, that’s how saggy they are).

“At first I thought I just needed breast implants, but after my consultation I need a breast lift (for how flabby they are) and then breast implants for volume.

“I didn’t expect it to be so expensive, but I know it’s something that will be worth it.

“I would be so grateful if you would help me raise the money I need and change a mother’s life.

‘If 5,000 people donate £1 each, I will reach my goal. Thank you for your understanding and your support.’

Jennifer said, ‘It affects quite a bit what I wear, it’s changed my whole confidence and the way I look.

“I’ve been feeling this way for a few months and I started researching a boob job two months ago.

“I tend to choose things that usually cover me more. When I wear dresses, I wear stretchy dresses with long sleeves and a square neckline.

‘I sometimes wear a v-neck, but it’s a short v-neck, it’s not the décolleté.

“My partner didn’t agree because of the risks involved in any procedure, but he totally supports me if it’s something that makes me happy and takes care of me afterwards.

“At the consultation, the surgeon said I also need a breast lift.

“My nipples are in the wrong direction, they’re pointing down, so he has to lift my breasts first before he can put in an implant.

“If we lift first and then implant in an all-in-one surgery, I’ll get those lifted ‘perfect cleavage’ breasts.”

Jennifer has chosen a target of £5,000, despite the surgery at the clinic where she had the £7,250 consultation.

Jennifer said, “I feel like it’s life changing. I know it sounds a bit cliche, but once I’m healed it will be great to dress the way I want and show it off too.

‘Because I’m a mom, the rest of my body isn’t perfect, so getting those boobs done would make me look prettier.

‘I think it’s important that mothers can feel and look as good as possible.

‘On the days when I don’t wear make-up, I feel a little down and I don’t feel like filming.

“When I have makeup on, I feel like making as many videos as possible. A breast augmentation would give me more confidence.

“I think it’s something that people won’t understand until you’re a mother and struggling with that problem yourself.”

Gert-Jan Oskam was living in China in 2011 when he had a motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the hips down. Now scientists have given him back control of his lower body with a combination of devices.

“For 12 years I’ve been trying to get back on my feet,” said Mr. Oskam in a press briefing Tuesday. “Now I’ve learned how to walk normally, naturally.”

In a study Published Wednesday in the journal Nature, researchers in Switzerland described implants that formed a “digital bridge” between Mr Oskam’s brain and his spinal cord, bypassing injured parts. The discovery allowed Mr Oskam, 40, to stand, walk and climb a steep incline with only the aid of a walker. More than a year after the implant was inserted, he has retained these abilities and has actually shown signs of neurological recovery, walking with crutches even with the implant disabled.

“We captured Gert-Jan’s thoughts and translated those thoughts into spinal cord stimulation to restore voluntary movement,” Grégoire Courtine, a spinal cord specialist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, who helped lead the research, said. during the press conference.

Jocelyne Bloch, a neuroscientist at the University of Lausanne who placed the implant in Mr Oskam added: “It was quite science fiction to me at first, but today it became true.”

There have been a number of advances in the technological treatment of spinal cord injury in recent decades. In 2016, a group of scientists led by Dr. Courtine managed to restore the ability to walk in paralyzed monkeys, and another group helped a man regain control of his crippled hand. In 2018, another group of scientists, also led by Dr. Courtine, a way to do this stimulate the brain with electrical pulse generators, enabling partially paralyzed people to walk and cycle again. Last year, more advanced Brain stimulation procedures allowed paralyzed subjects to swim, walk, and cycle within one day of treatment.

Mr. Oskam had undergone stimulation procedures in previous years and was even able to walk somewhat again, but eventually his improvement leveled off. During the press conference, Mr. Oskam said that these stimulation technologies had made him feel like there was something strange about his motor skills, a strange distance between his body and mind.

The new interface changed this, he said, “The stimulation used to control me, and now I control the stimulation.”

In the new study, the brain-spine interface, as the researchers called it, took advantage of an artificial intelligence thought-decoder to read Mr. Oskam’s intentions — detectable as electrical signals in his brain — and link them to muscle movements. The etiology of natural movement, from thought to intention to action, was preserved. The only addition, as Dr. Courtine described it was the digital bridge over the injured parts of the spine.

Andrew Jackson, a neuroscientist at Newcastle University who was not involved in the research, said: “It raises interesting questions about autonomy and the source of commands. You keep blurring the philosophical line between what the brain is and what the technology is .”

Dr. Jackson added that scientists in the field have theorized about connecting the brain to spinal cord stimulators for decades, but that this was the first time they had achieved such success in a human patient. “It’s easy to say, it’s much harder to do,” he said.

To achieve this result, the researchers first implanted electrodes in Mr. Oskam’s skull and spine. The team then used a machine learning program to observe which parts of the brain lit up as he tried to move different parts of his body. This thought decoder was able to match the activity of certain electrodes with certain intentions: one configuration lit up when Mr. Oskam tried to move his ankles, another when he tried to move his hips.

Then the researchers used a different algorithm to connect the brain implant to the spinal cord implant, which was set up to send electrical signals to different parts of his body, causing movement. The algorithm was able to account for small variations in the direction and speed of each muscle contraction and relaxation. And because the signals between the brain and spine were sent every 300 milliseconds, Mr. Oskam was able to quickly adjust his strategy based on what worked and what didn’t. Within the first treatment session, he was able to twist his hip muscles.

Over the next few months, the researchers refined the brain-spine interface to better suit basic actions like walking and standing. Mr. Oskam regained a somewhat healthy-looking gait and was able to negotiate stairs and ramps with relative ease, even after months without treatment. In addition, after a year of treatment, he began to notice marked improvements in his movement without the aid of the brain-spine interface. The researchers documented these improvements in weight-bearing, balance, and gait tests.

Now Mr. Oskam can walk around his house with restrictions, get in and out of a car, and stand at a bar for a drink. For the first time, he said, he feels like he’s in control.

The researchers acknowledged limitations in their work. Subtle intentions in the brain are hard to discern, and while the current brain-spine interface is suitable for walking, the same probably can’t be said for restoring upper body movement. The treatment is also invasive, requiring multiple surgeries and hours of physical therapy. The current system does not resolve all spinal cord paralysis.

But the team was hopeful that further progress would make treatment more accessible and systematically more effective. “This is our real goal,” said Dr. Courtine, “to make this technology available around the world to all patients who need it.”
