The British Embassy in Moscow was today forced to issue an official statement confirming that King Charles III is still alive, after Russian media claimed he had died.

A host of Russian news sites and their associated social media accounts reported earlier today that the king had died at the age of 75 due to cancer complications, citing unnamed “media” sources in an unexplained flurry of messages.

It came after an image of a patently false statement from ‘Buckingham Palace’ reporting Charles’ ‘unexpected death’ was circulated on social media.

“King Charles III of Great Britain has died at the age of 75, according to media reports,” Russian news channel Sputnik reported.

‘There is no information about this on the royal family’s website or in the British media.’

Minutes later, their stories were updated after they were forced to climb down following reports that the king was indeed not dead.

The British Embassy in Moscow then furiously posted to X: ‘Reports of the death of King Charles III of Great Britain are fake!’

The British Embassy in Kiev followed shortly afterwards with a statement saying: ‘We would like to inform you that the news of the death of King Charles III is fake.’

Several prominent media outlets reported on the fake news, but it was not immediately clear whether they had made a mistake or whether Vladimir Putin’s propaganda machine was directly behind it.

The sick stunt involving the monarch followed criticism in Britain and other Western countries over Vladimir Putin’s “victory” in a “rigged” presidential election.

The British Embassy’s Telegram channel posted a message in Russian to emphasize that the reports were fake.

“Reports of the death of King Charles III of Great Britain are fake,” the announcement said, shortly after the British embassy in Ukraine issued a similar message.

The first media outlets to publish the false report were RIA, Sputnik, Readkovka and Mash – staunchly pro-Putin channels – but they all later corrected their stories.

Mashmedia wrote: ‘British King Charles III has died, Buckingham Palace reports. Elizabeth II’s son took the throne less than a year ago; the coronation took place on May 6, 2023. He was 75 years old.’

It was updated to say ‘the message turned out to be fake’ and added: ‘Let’s not forget that he was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago.’

But the newspaper later stated: ‘The fake news about Charles III’s death spread quickly and was just as quickly debunked.

‘The King of Great Britain is alive and going about his business. At least that’s what Buckingham Palace says.‘

Even Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, joined the fray, writing: “London looks pathetic.”

Pro-Kremlin BAZA online media reported: ‘The Russian media reported the death of British King Charles III with reference to a document allegedly published by Buckingham Palace.

Germany is facing anger today after an air chief revealed secret British operations in Ukraine on an ‘unsecure’ telephone line.

Berlin has been labeled ‘unreliable’ after a telephone conversation between Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz and senior Luftwaffe officers was intercepted by Russia.

The discussions included confirmation that British personnel are being deployed to Ukraine, and details of how Storm Shadow missiles will be deployed in the country.

The talks also exposed a division between the German military and Chancellor Olaf Scholz over whether Kiev should be supplied with its own Taurus missile system.

Mr Scholz confirmed that the recording broadcast by Moscow’s state broadcaster was authentic and described the security breach as “very serious”.

The breach could jeopardize arms supplies from Britain and France to Ukraine and hamper Kiev’s crucial use of cruise missiles in the war against Russia.

It will also further inflame tensions between NATO allies, after Scholz previously publicly referred to the British military presence in Ukraine.

De ervaring van mijn vriend was geen geïsoleerd incident. Ik heb verhalen gehoord over paspoorten die in beslag zijn genomen en over persbendes die opduiken in kantoren.

De Odesa-markt is tegenwoordig een vreemd gezicht, verstoken van mannen van militaire leeftijd, van wie velen steeds meer thuis blijven naarmate er steeds meer video’s op sociale media verschijnen van persbendes die mensen fysiek op straat vastgrijpen en in busjes bundelen.

Het is een teken van wanhoop. Oekraïne wordt geconfronteerd met een ernstige rekruteringscrisis.

Kiev beweerde deze week dat 31.000 van zijn soldaten zijn gedood. Maar al in augustus schatten Amerikaanse functionarissen dat er 70.000 oorlogsdoden en maar liefst 120.000 gewonden waren.

Elke keer dat ik naar het platteland ga, groeit mijn lijst met overleden vrienden en kennissen. Elke keer zie ik meer gewonden op straat.

Volgens een Amerikaans inlichtingenrapport uit december 2023 heeft Rusland 315.000 slachtoffers gemaakt. Maar met ruim 140 miljoen inwoners telt het land minstens drie maal zoveel als de Oekraïense bevolking van grofweg 40 miljoen.

Bovendien is het een dictatuur. Het kan zoveel mensen van de straat halen als het wil – en dat doet het ook. In een berucht voorbeeld werden meer dan 200 mannen van het bouwbedrijf Mipstroy1 in één keer naar de strijd gestuurd.

Het jaagt de behoeftigen uit daklozenopvangcentra en, berucht, uit de meedogenloze gevangenissen van het land. Eén hulpbron waar Rusland nooit zonder komt te zitten zijn mensen. En wie gaat protesteren? Wiens stem doet er werkelijk toe?

Na Poetins totale invasie van Oekraïne in februari 2022 sloten duizenden zich aan om de Russische indringers uit hun land te verdrijven.

En lange tijd waren ze succesvol. Met behulp van westerse wapens sloegen ze de Russen terug uit Kiev.

Maar sinds het mislukte tegenoffensief van 2023 begint de oorlog te keren. Het aantal slachtoffers neemt toe. Het moreel is laag, hoewel de soldaten vastberaden doorvechten. Ik heb in Oekraïne veel te veel strijders ontmoet om te geloven dat ze het zomaar zouden opgeven.

Maar de aanvoer van westerse wapens is zowel traag als onvolledig. Vrienden die zich in februari 2022 wanhopig wilden aansluiten, praten nu over hun weigering om te sterven in ‘Zelensky’s oorlog’.

Vrienden aan het front zeggen tegen hen: ‘Kom hier maar niet, het is chaos.’

‘Hoeveel van onze mannen zullen er nog sterven?’ is de vraag die nu wordt gesteld. ‘En voor wat?’

Het kan zijn dat Oekraïne geen bereidwillige strijders meer heeft.

In november vorig jaar zei de voormalige Britse minister van Defensie Ben Wallace dat de gemiddelde leeftijd van een Oekraïense soldaat aan het front ouder was dan 40 (andere rapporten beweren 43).

Ik kan dit uit eigen ervaring bevestigen. Het is een verbazingwekkende statistiek, vooral als je bedenkt dat de levensverwachting van mannen in Oekraïne slechts 68 jaar bedraagt.

Vergelijk dit eens met de gemiddelde leeftijd van leden in actieve dienst van de Amerikaanse strijdkrachten, die 28 is, en die van Groot-Brittannië 31 jaar.

Tot nu toe heeft Kiev gehoopt de levens van zijn jongste en slimste mensen niet te hoeven ruilen met die van Russische misdadigers en criminelen op het slagveld. Maar onder een nieuwe wet wordt de minimumleeftijd voor dienstplicht met twee jaar verlaagd van 27 jaar, wat betekent dat iedereen boven de 25 jaar kan worden opgeroepen.

Juridisch gezien kunnen rekruteringsfunctionarissen van het Oekraïense leger geen burgers vasthouden, laat staan ​​hen fysiek dwingen. Oproeppapieren worden online verzonden en persoonlijk verspreid. Maar het land valt sinds 2022 onder de staat van beleg, wat deze functionarissen de kans geeft het systeem te misbruiken.

Soms zijn de resultaten flagrant, met berichten over een man met een gebroken arm die gedwongen werd naar een rekruteringscentrum te rijden en een ander met ernstige geestelijke gezondheidsproblemen die zich moest aanmelden.

Veel steden hebben nu Telegram-berichtenkanalen die zich richten op het monitoren van de activiteiten en bewegingen van rekruteringsfunctionarissen, of ‘olijven’ zoals ze bekend staan, verwijzend naar de kleur van hun uniformen.

Toen we op een ochtend in een café in het centrum van de stad zaten, liet een vriend me de Odesa-groep zien. Terwijl ik door video’s en foto’s bladerde, zag ik dat er tienduizenden leden waren die elkaar tips gaven over de gebieden waar de olijven actief zijn.

De staat vecht terug. In maart 2023 blokkeerden Oekraïense veiligheidsdiensten 26 van deze kanalen, waaronder de kanalen die actief waren in de steden Kiev, Lviv en Odessa. ‘Dankzij de voortdurende updates hebben de destructieve platforms snel een aantal abonnees opgebouwd van meer dan 400.000’, kondigde het aan. De situatie wordt niet geholpen door het voortdurende corruptieprobleem in Oekraïne.

Volgens de wet mogen gezonde mannen tussen 18 en 60 jaar het land niet verlaten. In werkelijkheid kunnen rijke Oekraïners betalen voor ‘vrijstellingsbrieven’ om dit te omzeilen.

In toenemende mate wordt de oorlog door sommige delen van de samenleving gezien als een oorlog die wordt uitgevochten door mensen die niet over het geld beschikken om zich een weg eruit te kopen.

De Oekraïners zijn moedig en patriottisch – en ze hebben de verwachtingen van bijna iedereen, inclusief Poetin en de CIA, ruimschoots overtroffen.

Maar nu Donald Trump tekeergaat tegen het sturen van nog eens miljarden aan militaire hulp naar Kiev, en het nu steeds waarschijnlijker lijkt dat hij Joe Biden zal verslaan bij de verkiezingen van dit jaar, vragen veel Oekraïners zich af wat het nut is om te sterven als hun bondgenoten dat niet langer lijken te doen. zorg.

Maar Oekraïne is in oorlog, en een groot deel van de jeugd heeft zich aangemeld. Velen zijn nu dood. Er zullen er misschien nog veel meer volgen – geholpen door ons. We doen wat we kunnen. In november 2023 waren, als onderdeel van de door Groot-Brittannië geleide Operatie Interflex, sinds juni 2022 30.000 Oekraïners op Britse bodem getraind, in het grootste trainingsprogramma hier sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Maar zelfs dat is misschien niet genoeg. Vorige week meldde het Britse ministerie van Defensie dat Rusland wetgeving voorbereidt die de leeftijd van militair contractpersoneel dat vóór juni 2023 is aangeworven, zal verhogen naar 65 jaar, en 70 jaar voor officieren.

Op 23 februari deelde Oekraïne opnieuw een enorme klap uit aan de strijdkrachten van Moskou, door een Russisch spionagevliegtuig ter waarde van £270 miljoen ($330 miljoen) neer te halen boven Krasnodar.

Video toonde enorme rookpluimen die uit het wrak opstegen nadat de vleugel van het A-50U verkenningsvliegtuig naar verluidt was afgescheurd door een treffer van een vernieuwde S-200 langeafstandsluchtverdedigingsraket uit het Sovjettijdperk – een duizelingwekkende klap voor de toch al slinkende verzameling van Rusland.

Naar verluidt zijn tien bemanningsleden dood aangetroffen op de crashlocatie, hoewel de vliegtuigen doorgaans vijftien bemanningsleden aan boord hebben.

Het stortte neer in de Russische regio Krasnodar, waar Poetins officiële residentie aan de Zwarte Zee en een privépaleis van £1 miljard zich bevinden.

Rusland heeft nu nog maar zes van zijn ultramoderne spionagevliegtuigen over nadat een ander duur vliegtuig vorige maand uit de lucht werd geschoten, aldus Oekraïne.

Russische bronnen gaven aanvankelijk de schuld aan eigen vuur, maar Oekraïense bronnen zeiden dat de A-50U was neergehaald ‘als onderdeel van een gezamenlijke operatie van [Kyiv’s] Hoofdinlichtingendirectoraat en de Oekraïense luchtmacht.

Het verlies van de A-50U – de tweede in zes weken – zal een zware klap zijn voor de luchtverkenningen van Poetin en het vermogen van Rusland schaden om doelen voor raketaanvallen te lokaliseren en de inzet op het Oekraïense slagveld te monitoren. Het vliegtuig stortte neer nabij Primorsko-Akhtarsk.

Het Oekraïense militaire inlichtingendirectoraat GUR zei: ‘De laatste vlucht van de A-50U vond plaats op 23 februari 2024 om 15.50 uur vanaf het vliegveld Akhtubinsk en was bedoeld om terroristische taken uit te voeren van de agressorstaat Rusland nabij de nederzettingen van Primorsko -Akhtarsk-Zernograd.

‘Een abrupte stopzetting van de werkzaamheden van het Bumblebee-radarcomplex… werd om 18.45 uur opgenomen door de radiotechnische inlichtingenstations van de GUR.

‘De brandschade van de gemoderniseerde A-50U van de Russische luchtmacht werd bevestigd door de radio-onderschepping van het gesprek van de dekkingsploeg van de Su-35.

‘Een van de Russische piloten meldt op de radio dat hij het werk van luchtverdediging, flitsen en explosies heeft gadegeslagen.’

‘Felicitaties aan de bezetters met de dag van de Verdediger van het Vaderland’, zei een sardonische Oekraïense luchtmachtcommandant, generaal Mykola Oleshchuk.

Sinds Kiev geavanceerde westerse luchtverdedigingssystemen heeft ontvangen, is het in staat deze wapens in te zetten en zo een steeds grotere bedreiging voor de Russische luchtvaart te vormen.

De oorlog gaat nu zijn derde jaar in, waarbij Kiev blijft lobbyen voor steun terwijl Moskou vasthoudt aan zijn lijn en recente winsten boekte in het oosten van het land.

De gerapporteerde neerstortingen van de Su-34 kwamen slechts enkele uren nadat Poetin opnieuw een grote klap kreeg, waarbij 19 troepen gedood en 12 gewond raakten tijdens een ‘medailleceremonie’ bij een Oekraïense HIMARS-raketaanval gisteren.

Bij de treffer op een bijeenkomst van de 155e Afzonderlijke Gardebrigade van de Marine-Infanterie in de bezette regio Donetsk kwam volgens berichten luitenant-kolonel Roman Kozhuchov om het leven.

Een andere hoge officier, kolonel Michail Gudkov, commandant van de 155e Separate Guards Brigade of Naval Infantry, raakte gewond, net als majoor Alexander Abilov.

Er zijn de afgelopen vijf weken minstens vijf grote aanvallen geweest op bijeenkomsten van Russische troepen – voor inspecties of prijsuitreikingen.

Rusland is dit jaar getroffen door herhaalde aanvallen op troepenbijeenkomsten, waardoor de oorlogsinspanningen van Poetin ernstig zijn beschadigd.

Ondanks zijn opschepperij over territoriale granen rond Avdiivka, heeft hij mankrachtverlies geleden, evenals een aanzienlijke verzwakking van zijn luchtmacht en Zwarte Zeevloot.

Vooroorlogse blogger Oleg Tsarev zei: ‘Ze praten over een nieuwe prijsuitreiking voorafgaand aan de formatie, en over een nieuwe aanval met HIMARS-raketten op onze militairen en de daaropvolgende verliezen.

‘Ze zijn niet te onderwijzen.’

Telegramkanaal Dosye Shpiona zei: ‘Het commando voerde een formatie uit ter ere van het belonen van individuele militairen van de brigade die zich in de strijd onderscheiden.

‘De aanval werd uitgevoerd door twee HIMARS-raketten.’

Op 25 januari werden 24 mensen gedood op het militaire bereik van Vostochny, in de regio Donetsk. Op 4 februari kwamen 28 Russische militairen om bij een vermoedelijke HIMARS-raketaanval op het restaurant aan de Adriatische Zee ‘waar het Russische leger aan het dineren was’.

Op 21 februari kwamen ongeveer 65 mensen om het leven op een oefenterrein in Trudivske, in de bezette regio Donetsk.

De volgende dag kwamen tientallen anderen om bij een raketaanval in de regio Cherson.

Poetin waarschuwde de westerse landen vandaag dat er een reëel risico op een kernoorlog bestond als ze hun eigen troepen naar Oekraïne zouden sturen om te vechten, en hij zei dat Moskou over de wapens beschikt om doelen in het Westen aan te vallen.

Poetin, 71, richtte zich tot het parlement en andere leden van de elite van het land en herhaalde zijn beschuldiging dat het Westen erop uit is Rusland te verzwakken, en hij suggereerde dat westerse leiders niet begrepen hoe gevaarlijk hun inmenging kon zijn in wat hij noemde als de interne aangelegenheden van Rusland.

War between Russia and Ukraine: Amid the ongoing armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the latest update is that five people have been killed and ten others injured in Russian attacks in Ukraine. This update was shared by regional authorities early on Monday, as quoted in media reports.

“Civilian casualties were reported in Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kherson and Sumy Oblast,” The Kiev Independent reported.

An oblast is an administrative division of the constituent republics of Russia.

Sumy Oblast is located in northeastern Ukraine, where a couple was killed when they were hit by Russian guided aerial bombs that attacked the village of Yunakivka, located less than 10 km from the border with Russia.

One house was destroyed and five others were damaged in the attack, the Sumy Oblast military administration said.

Russian soldiers launched several attacks on Nikopol in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast on Sunday morning. A 57-year-old man was killed when a Russian drone dropped explosives directly on his truck, The Kiev Independent reported.

Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor Serhii Lysak said four people were injured late Sunday evening when Russian forces attacked the regional center of Dnipro. Two men aged 41 and 49 and two women aged 20 and 60 were hospitalized. The attack also damaged ten houses and several cars.

In Kherson Oblast, Russian attacks killed two people and injured one person on Sunday, Kherson Oblast Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said, according to The Kyiv Independent.

A 44-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman were killed when Russian forces attacked the village of Tiahynka.

Donetsk Oblast Governor Vadym Filashkin reported that five people were injured in Kostiantynivka, Kurakhove, Zakitne, Maksymilianivka and Chasiv Yar.

Russia also carried out attacks in Kharkov, Zaporizhiav and Mykolaiv oblasts, but there were no civilian casualties.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the two years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, adding that this number was far lower than estimates by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government.

“31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in this war. Not 300,000, not 150,000, not what Putin and his deceitful circle lied about. But nevertheless, each of these losses is a great sacrifice for us,” Zelenskyy said in Ukraine. Year 2024” forum in Kiev.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he would not reveal the number of troops wounded or missing and that “tens of thousands of civilians” had been killed in Ukraine’s occupied territories, but said no exact figures would be available until the war was over. .

“We don’t know how many of our citizens they killed. We don’t,” he said.

It is the first time Kiev has confirmed the number of losses since Russia launched a full-scale war on February 24, 2022.

It has been ten years, not two, since the start of the war in Ukraine. And once you understand that, you can start thinking about it clearly. What is Britain’s interest in this conflict? Why are so many in politics and the media cheering the carnage that has devastated Ukraine, the country they claim to love and admire? What did Ukraine gain from it? What can Ukraine and its people possibly gain from it?

All I ask is that you use your mind instead of your emotions. Let’s start with what happened ten years ago. It should be shocking.

In 2014, Ukraine had a rough but functioning democracy. This worked because the country was almost evenly divided between the east and west. Power shifted from one side to the other and in 2010 Viktor Yanukovych won the presidential election with 12.5 million votes, beating his closest rival, Yulia Tymoshenko, with 11.6 million votes.

Unlike the previous elections in 2004, no one seriously contested the outcome. So in February 2014, Yanukovych was the legal head of state, with two years left in his term.

If, as we all say, we believe in democracy, then this is an almost sacred fact. The widespread and justified disgust over the invasion of the US Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021 is based on the belief that power rests on ballots and not violence.

There is no clearer distinction between democracies and the rest. The losers must respect the result. If they dispute it, they should use legal methods. But generally speaking, if they don’t like the person in power, they have to wait until the next election.

There is hardly a politician or commentator in Britain who has not said this at some point in his or her life. It’s called “loser consent.” Our ordered lives depend on it and we cannot betray it here or abroad.

But now we come to the big exception. In February 2014, a violent gang infiltrated and came to dominate the originally genuine democratic protests in the Ukrainian capital Kiev.

There is much darkness to these bitter days, including the mysterious shootings of mob members. Let’s say there is a serious dispute about who was responsible, but it has not yet been resolved.

In a leaked (and undisputed) telephone conversation, Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet told EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton that there was “increasing understanding” that “behind the snipers was not Yanukovych, but someone from the new coalition’.

A UN report (published on July 15, 2014) concluded that 103 protesters and 20 police officers were killed in these events. I believe at least some of the demonstrators were armed, and the deaths of twenty police officers indicate quite heavy violence on the part of the demonstrators.

Amid all this bloodshed, two serious attempts were made to reach a peaceful, lawful outcome. The first was destroyed, perhaps deliberately, when protesters responded to it on Tuesday, February 18, by setting fire to Yanukovych’s party headquarters. On the night of Thursday, February 20, the foreign ministers of Germany, Poland and France flew to Kiev to conclude a deal with the controversial Ukrainian president.

On February 21, that deal was signed by the president and three leading members of the anti-Yanukovych opposition, in the presence of the three EU ministers.

Yanukovych offered a rewrite of the constitution to suit the opposition; a new government; early presidential elections (by December 2014); and an impartial investigation into the violence (which there never was). All parties refrained from using force.

But that Friday evening, the deal was presented to the crowd in the Maidan, an unelected body with no constitutional or democratic authority. They certainly did not represent the eastern part of the country.

Their leaders rejected the proposal and threatened to “take up arms and go to Yanukovych’s residence” if he did not resign by the next morning. The opposition leaders who had signed the deal crumbled and made no effort to defend it against the screaming anger of the crowd.

Yanukovych, whose security protection had melted away, left Kiev. But he did not resign or leave the country. A recent book by highly respected Ukrainian historian Serhii Plokhy shows beyond doubt that the elected president was still in office and in Ukraine when parliament voted to depose him. The vote was illegal because the parliamentarians did not have the votes required by the constitution. But they continued anyway.

Antidemocratic violence was thus followed by lawlessness. The offer of early elections was brushed aside (were the crowd afraid their faction would lose them?). For example, a mob overthrew a legitimate head of state. And here comes the shocking test. Western countries, including Britain, should have condemned this action. Normally they are vigilant defenders of justice and democracy all over the world, right? But in this case they approved the coup.

The then Secretary of State, William Haag, made a completely incorrect statement in the House of Commons on March 4, 2014. He said Yanukovych had been deposed “with the very large majorities required by the constitution.” This is simply not true. And so the future Lord Hague’s next claim that ‘it is wrong to question the legitimacy of the new authorities’ has seriously misled Parliament.

I have discussed this with Lord Haag. After it became clear that he could not properly defend his actions, he stopped answering and fell silent. Pathetically, an awkward letter I sent to his official address was returned to me, adorned with a sticker stating that he was not known there. If we had a real opposition in this country he would never have been able to get away with this. But we don’t do that.

The events of February 2014 divided Ukraine and started a nasty little war in the east of the country, in which (among other tragedies and horrors) many civilians died at the hands of the Ukrainian military. The disgusting Russian invasion of two years ago, indefensible and barbaric, was the second phase of the war, not its beginning.

Of course, I don’t know who was behind Yanukovych’s overthrow. There were all kinds of Western politicians and intelligence services hanging around Kiev at the time. And the West has flagrantly betrayed its own principles by condoning and forgiving the unpleasant event. But of course that does not prove that any Western country supported the coup against Yanukovych.

Yet I believe that any outside force that supported this coup is as guilty of aggression and warmongering as Russia’s Putin. Think about that as you listen to all those loud, safe voices demanding that we continue to fuel this war, where Ukrainians are dying every day for democratic principles that we do not, in fact, support.

The King has praised the ‘determination and strength’ of the Ukrainian people in a message marking the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion.

Charles III says he is ‘greatly encouraged’ by the efforts of the UK and its allies in supporting Ukraine ‘at this time of such great suffering and need’.

He said: ‘The determination and strength of the Ukrainian people continues to inspire, as the unprovoked attack on their land, their lives and livelihoods enters a third, tragic, year.

‘Despite the tremendous hardship and pain inflicted upon them, Ukrainians continue to show the heroism with which the world associates them so closely.

‘Theirs is true valour, in the face of indescribable aggression. I have felt this personally in the many meetings I have had with Ukrainians since the start of the war, from President Zelensky and Mrs Zelenska, to new army recruits training here in the United Kingdom.

‘I continue to be greatly encouraged that the United Kingdom and our allies remain at the forefront of international efforts to support Ukraine at this time of such great suffering and need.

‘My heart goes out to all those affected, as I remember them in my thoughts and prayers.’

The King has undertaken many engagements in the UK linked to Ukraine since the war began, including visiting a training site for military recruits in Wiltshire.

He has met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky several times, including during his visit to the UK in February last year.

It was announced earlier this month that Charles had been diagnosed with a form of cancer, discovered while he was being treated in hospital for an enlarged prostate.

He has started a schedule of regular treatments but postponed all public-facing duties, spending much of his time at the royal residence in Sandringham, Norfolk.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak joined other world leaders in reaffirming support for Ukraine on the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion, vowing to back Kyiv ‘until they prevail’.

The Prime Minister said ‘tyranny will never triumph’ as President Volodymyr Zelensky’s troops defend the country against an emboldened Moscow.

The UK has pledged to invest £245 million in producing artillery shells for Ukraine and £8.5 million in humanitarian funding as the conflict enters its third year.

Saturday marks two years since the Kremlin launched its attack on Ukraine, starting the biggest incursion in a European country since the Second World War.

Mr Sunak, who visited Kyiv last month to sign a new security agreement and announce an increase in military funding for the country, said on Friday: ‘When (Russian President Vladimir) Putin launched his illegal invasion two years ago, the free world was united in its response.

‘We stood together behind Ukraine. And on this grim anniversary, we must renew our determination.

‘I was in Kyiv just a few weeks ago and I met wounded Ukrainian soldiers. Each harrowing story was a reminder of Ukraine’s courage in the face of terrible suffering.

‘It was a reminder of the price they are paying not only to defend their country against a completely unjustified invasion, but also to defend the very principles of freedom, sovereignty and the rule of law on which we all depend.’

He added: ‘This is the moment to show that tyranny will never triumph and to say once again that we will stand with Ukraine today and tomorrow.

‘We are prepared to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, until they prevail.’

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, who hopes to enter Number 10 after the general election this year, said Britain would always support Ukraine ‘no matter who is in power in this country’ and added that Mr Putin’s ‘cowardice and barbarity’ will not prevail.

Sir Keir said: ‘The resistance of the Ukrainian people has inspired and humbled the world. The UK and our allies will stand in solidarity with them until their day of victory.

‘We will not waver. We will not abandon them. We will not be divided in the face of tyranny or oppression.

‘We look together to the day when Ukraine secures justice and liberty in their rightful homeland, when Ukrainians can return home and rebuild their great country, and live peacefully, freely and proudly.’

European countries are struggling to find enough weapons and ammunition to send to Kyiv, and US help worth 60 billion dollars (£47 billon) is stalled over political differences in Washington.

Ukrainian forces withdrew from the strategic eastern city of Avdiivka at the weekend, where they had battled a fierce Russian assault for four months despite being heavily outnumbered and outgunned.

Kyiv has kept up strikes behind the front line but moved to a defensive posture amid critical shortages on the battlefield.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps was asked whether the funding package announced on Saturday was enough.

‘That £245 million is just a fraction of the £2.5 billion we’re giving in direct aid and military assistance this year… but ammunition is the thing that Ukraine desperately needs at the moment,’ he said.

Mr Shapps echoed concerns raised by Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron over the progress of the US funding package through Congress, where it faces an uphill battle as hardline Republicans in the House of Representatives oppose the legislation.

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson arrived in Ukraine today, where he joined a number of allies who have come to show solidarity as the war enters its third year.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, this morning Johnson said: ‘On this grim second anniversary of Putin’s invasion I am honoured to be here in Ukraine.

‘With their indomitable courage I have no doubt that the Ukrainians will win and expel Putin’s forces – provided we give them the military, political and economic help that they need.’

He shared a photo of him standing with Zelenskyy in Borodianka, Kyiv region in January last year on one of numerous visits to the war-torn state.

It came as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni arrived in Kyiv to preside over a virtual meeting on Ukraine with G7 to discuss new sanctions against Russia.

Johnson’s premiership saw record support for Ukraine, Britain quickly becoming the second-largest donor after the United States.

The former prime minister has maintained strong relations with Ukrainian leader Zelenskyy since leaving office.

Ninety minutes after resigning in July 2022, Johnson called Zelenskyy to say his people had the UK’s unwavering support in its fight against Russia, and said Britain would continue to supply vital aid for as long as needed.

Johnson, who held the top role when Russia invaded on February 24, 2022, travelled to Ukraine a year after stepping down to receive an honorary degree from the University of Lviv.

His arrival today coincides with a virtual summit of G7 leaders due to take place at Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral later Saturday with Zelenskyy attending.

Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and Belgian prime minister Alexander De Croo arrived in Kyiv today to take part in the G7 summit.

They travelled with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on an overnight train from neighbouring Poland.

Their presence was designed to underline the West’s commitment to helping Ukraine even as it suffers growing shortages of military supplies, impacting its performance on the battlefield where Moscow is grinding out territorial gains.

Von der Leyen wrote on the social media platform X that she was in Kyiv ‘to celebrate the extraordinary resistance of the Ukrainian people’. She added: ‘More than ever, we stand firmly by Ukraine. Financially, economically, militarily, morally. Until the country is finally free.’ 

British prime minister Rishi Sunak also voiced support for Ukraine’s plight in an address to mark the second anniversary.

The Prime Minister declared that ‘tyranny will never triumph’ as he said Britain will do ‘whatever it takes, for as long as it takes’ to help them win.

Mr Sunak said: ‘When Putin launched his illegal invasion… the free world was united in its response.

‘We stood together behind Ukraine. And on this grim anniversary, we must renew our determination.

‘This is the moment to show that tyranny will never triumph and to say once again that we will stand with Ukraine today and tomorrow. We are prepared to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, until they prevail.’

The prime minister visited Kyiv last month to sign a new security agreement and announce more military funding for Ukraine.

On Friday, US President Joe Biden also announced 500 new sanctions targeting Russia’s ‘financial sector, defence industrial base and procurement networks’ in light of the shock death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in a grisly Arctic penal colony on February 16.

The new restrictions were described as ‘crushing’ by a high-level State Department official on Thursday, who also claimed they would target officials ‘directly involved in Navalny’s death’. Moscow still denies involvement in the shock death last Friday.

The US will also impose new export restrictions on nearly 100 entities for providing support to Russia and take action to further reduce Russia’s energy revenues, Biden said in a statement.

‘They will ensure Putin pays an even steeper price for his aggression abroad and repression at home,’ the president said of the sanctions.
