Brittany Higgins and David Sharaz are adjusting to their new lives in France after leaving Australia behind, as the couple cuddle outside their rustic chateau.

The pair both wore blue down jackets, while Mr Sharaz also wore a cream-coloured scarf, to brave the gloomy weather in the village of Lunas on Friday evening local time, where they plan to settle in newfound anonymity 17,000km from their former house.

When Ms Higgins arrived at the property in their dark-coloured rental Volvo, Mr Sharaz rushed outside to meet her, hugging her before escorting her inside.

Their move to Europe follows five years of intense scrutiny after Ms Higgins alleged she was raped at Parliament House in 2019, sparking back-to-back court cases.

The latest case is the defamation lawsuit brought by the man she accused of sexual assault — former Liberal colleague Bruce Lehrmann — which concluded in federal court this week.

Higgins and Sharaz bought the five-bedroom property in the sleepy village of fewer than 600 inhabitants in the Dordogne region of southern France following Higgins’ taxpayer-funded $2.4 million compensation.

The purchase – the house has a gazebo and a large swimming pool for entertaining and is worth an estimated $600,000 – has the town abuzz with talk of “the Australians”, the local mayor told media on Wednesday.

After flying out of Brisbane earlier this week, the couple traveled through Singapore, where Mrs Higgins posted on social media: “No matter how far or how wide I wander, I still call Australia home,” before arriving on the 4, 5 star Sheraton Bordeaux Airport. Hotel.

They were spotted holding hands on Thursday as they took their cavoodle Kingston and cat Clover out of quarantine at Bordeaux-Merigniac airport.

Mr Sharaz told the waiting media that the couple were excited to move into their new home with their pets at Christmas, adding that he was also looking forward to doing some mowing, referring to the castle’s overgrown grounds.

The couple’s move coincides with the conclusion of Lehrmann’s defamation case this week against Lisa Wilkinson and Network 10, which first exposed Higgins’ claims.

Mr Lehrmann has consistently denied the allegations and said his reputation has been significantly damaged.

As the case draws to a close and Judge Michael Lee ponders his ruling over the summer holidays, Ms Wilkinson’s legal adviser, Sue Chrysanthou, SC, comes up with a wild theory about why Ms Higgins was found naked by security that night.

The lawyer suggested Ms Higgins could have taken off her cocktail dress because there had been a “kind of freak heatwave” in Canberra that evening and the air conditioning in Parliament House had “broken down”.

Her sarcastic theory – the temperature in Canberra that night at the airport was a mild 16.7 degrees Celsius – was intended to convince Judge Lee that the only rational explanation for her undressing was “that sex was taking place”.

The criminal trial against Mr Lehrmann was halted due to juror misconduct and a subsequent retrial was called off due to concerns about Ms Higgins’ mental health, leaving no judicial verdict on what happened that night.

The result is that it is up to Judge Lee to determine whether Wilkinson and Network 10’s report is covered by a truth defense and whether, on the balance of probabilities, an assault occurred.

His task will be tough as Judge Lee previously told the court that parts of the evidence from both Ms Higgins and Mr Lehrmann in the trial cannot be relied on.

“The two main witnesses have real credit problems and several parts of each witness’s evidence simply cannot be accepted,” Judge Lee said.

Higgins and Sharaz bought the castle last year with an estimated value of $600,000 Australian dollars.

Ten’s barrister Matthew Collins QC agreed with the comments.

He added: ‘In relation to both key players, we will seek to convince Your Honor that there was a qualitative difference between Mr Lehrmann’s dishonesty and the successful credit attacks directed against Ms Higgins.’

“Mr. Lehrmann turned out to be a fundamentally dishonest man who was willing to say and do anything he believed would further his interests,” Dr. Collins argued.

“He was completely unconcerned with providing the court with a fair account of the events of March 22 and 23, 2019.”

According to both parties, they went to Parliament House together after hours, but their stories about what happened in the office of their then boss Senator Linda Reynolds – where there was no CCTV – differ.

Mr Lehrmann’s legal counsel has argued that Ms Higgins made up the rape claims in a moment of panic after waking up in her boss’s office after a night of partying.

According to Gibbs Wright Lawyers, in a defamation case: “The defendant bears the responsibility of establishing on the balance of probabilities that the defamatory allegations arising from the publication complained of are true, or substantially true.”

“This is because the law of defamation presumes the publication to be false until a defense of the truth has been raised and proven.”

Judge Lee will have to determine whether Network 10 and Wilkinson’s claims are covered by a truth defense, in which case they will not have to pay anything.

If he finds that this is not the case, significant damages and legal costs may be awarded to Mr. Lehrmann.

Yet Network Ten and Wilkinson argue that the segment was a matter of public interest and its preparation was reasonable, and should therefore fall under qualified privilege and not be liable for damages.

However, there is also another scenario, in which Judge Lee finds that Mr. Lehrmann was not identifiable from The Project’s interview with Ms. Higgins.

If this is established, the case will be over with nothing being found one way or the other about the events of that night.

Justice Lee is expected to issue a ruling early next year.

Laurence Fox’s new girlfriend is a conspiracy theorist podcaster who has claimed the moon landings were faked, 9/11 was an inside job, climate change is a ‘smokescreen’ and Jeffrey Epstein was ‘popped’ after Prince Andrew’s Newsnight interview.

Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Barker, who was seen accompanying Fox to the High Court today for the start of a libel trial, describes herself on Instagram as a model, body double and stuntwoman. She was born in America but now lives in the UK.

She regularly appears on Elite Thinking Club, a ‘critical thinking’ fringe podcast that touts itself as a ‘show dedicated to critical thinking’ but airs wild conspiracy theories including the idea Princess Diana was murdered on the orders of the Queen.

Asked in an episode on the theory of evolution whether humans are descended from apes, she replied: ‘I think that’s what we’re made to believe and that is what we should be believing [sic] but I don’t think that is. No. I think we come from another race.’

Barker also claims that financier Epstein was killed following Prince Andrew’s Newsnight interview – but Epstein died in August 2019, three months before the Duke of York’s excruciating interview with Emily Maitlis took place.

The Elite Thinking Podcast’s YouTube channel has 500 subscribers, and began posting episodes three years ago with a single host, Chris Jules Julien.

Barker began appearing in episodes at the start of 2021, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, and was quick to begin sharing radical views on topics commonly up for debate in conspiracy theory circles.

Julien’s TikTok channel, where he posts clips from the podcast, has nearly 35,000 followers.

The show is available on a number of mainstream podcasting platforms, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

In a video on conspiracies surrounding the Royal Family, shared in February 2021, Barker claimed Jeffrey Epstein was killed because of his links with Prince Andrew.

The disgraced financier died in prison in August 2019 in what was ruled to be a suicide; he had been arrested on suspicion of sex trafficking shortly before his death, prompting a raft of theories suggesting he had been murdered.

She said in the podcast: ‘The minute Prince Andrew had to do that interview that was it, Jeffrey was going to be popped. Because he’s royalty – and you mess with the royals you ain’t going to come out alive are you.’

However, the interview itself was only recorded in November 2019, three months after Epstein died.

In March 2021, Barker appeared to suggest that the September 11 attacks had ‘grey areas’ of unanswered questions, making apparent references to a theory popular among conspiracists that heat from jet fuel couldn’t have melted the World Trade Centre’s steel construction.

In an episode entitled ‘The truth behind 911’, Barker claims to have seen a ‘different perspective’ on the al-Qaeda-orchestrated attack after visiting the US.

She said: ‘Being around American people I was hearing about these grey areas which wasn’t on the media [sic]. Things like the fuel, the steel, about the building and the way it came down.’

She added that her father appeared to suggest the attacks had been a so-called ‘false flag’ operation to justify the US invasion of Afghanistan.

Ms Barker continued: ‘My dad was an ex-military man. I told him I was petrified on the flight and he told me I would be fine.

‘I got there and he told me they need to warrant having a war – this was their warrant. This was their way of getting all of us to say ”yes, go get them”.

‘So I came back from my trip with a different perspective on it. Those who went to work that day in that building did not think that another human being – those in power and people running the country and outside sources would ever do something like that.’

She added: ‘When I came back was when I realised the world isn’t what we think it is. We need to look into the grey areas.

‘We need to think more, we need to speak to people, we need to go to these places and actually learn from those people who have experienced these thing that were there. Because they are the people who should be telling the stories, not the media and newsreaders.’

Later in 2021, Barker appeared on the podcast again to suggest that climate change was a ‘smokescreen for something else’, as a means to ‘control’ people.

‘I feel like [climate change] is the next emergency they want to throw at us,’ she said.

‘It’s like we’ve gone from the Covid emergency to climate change…the next thing we want to control you with is climate change.

‘I’ve been hearing all these different radio broadcasts, social media and news outlets about how the impact of us looking down was great for the planet and we may have to have these fire drill lockdowns continuously in order for us to be here and have a planet…I feel it’s a smokescreen for something else.’

And in an April 2021 episode, Barker appeared to suggest that the 1969 Moon landings had been a ‘big lie’ – another popular conspiracy theory suggesting that the Apollo 11 mission was faked.

She said on the episode: ‘Can you imagine being something like that. Imagine being back in that time and they say: ”We’re going to say you’ve been to the moon but you’re not actually going”.

‘I don’t think I could go along with it. That’s quite a big lie to keep going.’

As the coronavirus pandemic continued into 2022, Barker told an episode recorded in January that she was not vaccinated and regarded the government’s push for vaccinations as ‘propaganda’.

‘I don’t wear a mask, I’m not vaccinated, and I don’t use hand sanitiser due to the toxic chemicals…and I’m still alive, I’m still here,’ she said.

I feel like the Government feel like they’re losing control. People are fed up of it. It’s a divisive tactic – mask wearers v non-wearers and vaccinated versus non-vaccinated.

‘I’ve never seen so much push for a medical treatment and getting vaccinated and boosters like I have in a year and a half. It’s mind-blowing. All the adverts, all the propaganda. It’s just crazy.’

She later said that getting a vaccine was a matter of choice, adding: ‘It’s the coercion and manipulation. You should not be coerced or manipulated into doing something you don’t want to do.’

Barker’s social media features posts in which she rails against efforts to protect people during the coronavirus pandemic, including in 2020 when she claimed to clash with producers on a film set in Liverpool while working as a body double.

The podcaster, who has admitted that she was not vaccinated against Covid, called on-set Covid safety marshalls ‘power tripping bullies’ – and claimed she ‘won the battle’ to be on set because ‘production needed me more than I needed them’.

While she did not name the film in her social media post, she included an image of comic book character Catwoman and tagged the post #WarnerBros.

Catwoman, played by Zoe Kravitz, appeared in Warner Bros’ 2022 action film The Batman, which was filmed in Liverpool in 2020. Barker’s name does not appear in the list of credits on IMDB.

Other photos on social media show her wearing a t-shirt reading ‘I will not comply’, and waving a sign appearing to express support for the so-called ‘Blade Runners’ who have vandalised ULEZ cameras in protest at the zone’s expansion in August.

Barker was pictured holding hands with Fox as he entered the High Court to begin a libel trial on Wednesday.

Fox has shared images of him with Barker previously, posting a selfie ahead of a ‘worldwide freedom rally’ in September, captioned: ‘Off for a little stroll.’

The pair have also been pictured together at hustings ahead of the Uxbridge by-election in July, where he lost his deposit after picking up just 714 votes, and at a charity gala in London in September.

The actor-turned-politician is being sued by former Stonewall trustee Simon Blake and drag artist Crystal over a row on Twitter, now known as X, in October 2020.

Mr Fox called Mr Blake and the former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, whose real name is Colin Seymour, ‘paedophiles’ in an exchange about a decision by Sainsbury’s to celebrate Black History Month and provide a safe space for black employees.

After Mr Fox called for a boycott of the supermarket, the actor was called ‘a racist’ by the pair and actress Nicola Thorp in their own posts on the platform.

The Reclaim Party founder, who denies being a racist, is counter-suing the trio over their tweets, claiming they damaged his reputation.

Calvin Robinson, who was sacked by GB News after showing support for Fox after he made sexist remarks about political correspondent Ava Evans, appeared to confirm the relationship in a post on social media.

Responding to the claim made by lawyers in court that Fox was an ‘intelligent racist’, Mr Robinson wrote on X: ‘You couldn’t make it up. Laurence was sat there in court today with his mixed race girlfriend and mixed race close friend, being called a racist by three middle class white folks.’

Barker and Fox were contacted for comment.

New Delhi: A court in Delhi has summoned the chief minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, in a defamation case brought against him by Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. According to reports, Shekhawat has filed a libel suit against the congress veteran in connection with a Rs 900-crore credit society scam.

A summons from the Special Judge of the MP-MLA Court, Judge Harjeet Singh Jaspal, has asked CM Gehlot to appear before the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi on August 7.

Earlier, the Rouse Avenue court has reserved its order to summon the chief minister of Rajasthan in the defamation case brought by Union minister Jal Shakti.

Shekhawat had previously filed a defamation suit against Gehlot, alleging that the Congress leader had made false allegations against him and accusing Shekhawat of being involved in Rs 900-crore Sanjivani Credit Society scam.

The Union minister alleged that Gehlot defamed him as his name never appeared in the said scam when it was investigated by the Rajasthan government.

Disgraced ex-soldier Ben Roberts-Smith has been spotted for the first time since he lost his major libel case.

Australia’s most decorated living soldier was spotted at New Zealand’s Queenstown Airport on Wednesday as he boarded a flight to Australia.

The sighting comes 10 days after Mr Roberts-Smith lost his defamation suit against The Age, Sydney Morning Herald and The Canberra Times.

He had been seen in Bali the day before the verdict was passed.

Justice Anthony Besanko ruled that the allegations against Mr Roberts-Smith, including war crimes and murders, had been proven by a civil standard of probabilities.

He has not been criminally charged.

Following the findings, many have called for Mr Roberts-Smith to be stripped of his medals, including the Victoria Cross, and for the record of him to be removed from the Australian War Memorial.

Meanwhile, former SAS captain and federal Liberal MP Andrew Hastie, who testified against Roberts-Smith at the defamation trial, has broken his silence on the outcome.

He said he felt sadness and relief at the find.

“Grief for the lost Afghan lives and the families injured, for the broken relationships and for the destroyed reputations, both individually and on an institutional level, especially with the SASR (Special Air Service Regiment),” he told the ABC.

“But relief that the stark truth that many of the regiment have carried for years is now in the public domain and has been validated by a Federal Court judge.”

Mr Hastie, who is now the opposition defense spokesman, praised the soldiers who made the claims.

“They have shown moral courage. They’ve been brave,’ he said.

‘I honor their work, because it is they who have shown that the regiment has a moral impulse, which the regiment can correct itself.

“And it is they who have rejected the toxic culture and behavior.”

The Brereton Inquiry into Alleged War Crimes in Afghanistan, which released its report in 2021, found credible evidence that 39 Afghan civilians were killed by Australian special forces during the war.

It identified 25 current or former Australian Defense Force personnel as alleged perpetrators, either as principals or accomplices.

Thai activist Sutharee Wannasiri knew the poultry company had broken labor laws. She took to Twitter in 2017 to share a video of an interview with an employee who said he had to work day and night with no day off.

The poultry company hit back and sued Ms Sutharee for defamation and libel. Although a court found her not guilty in 2020, the company was not done yet.

While the case was still pending, her colleague from their human rights organization spoke up for Ms Sutharee on Twitter and Facebook. She was also charged with slander and libel. Now the colleague, Puttanee Kangkun, faces up to 42 years in prison pending sentencing.

The cases illustrate what often happens in Thailand when companies and government officials are not satisfied with public criticism. A defamation suit follows in which critics are accused of spreading untruths, and defendants are entangled in protracted legal battles and threatened with imprisonment.

Powerful figures who know they can use the courts to intimidate, harass and punish critics have taken advantage of what Thailand’s UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights has called “judicial harassment”.

Although the Thammakaset poultry company was found guilty of labor abuse, it continued to take its critics to court: first those who spoke about the labor abuse, and later those who complained about the measures the company took to silence those people. people.

Since 2016, Thammakaset has filed 39 lawsuits, mostly for defamation, against 23 individuals: migrant workers, human rights defenders and journalists. It lost all of them except one, which was later overturned on appeal.

Three are still pending.

In addition to Ms. Puttanee, Thammakaset is also suing Angkhana Neelapaijit, a former national human rights commissioner in Thailand, and Thanaporn Saleephol, a press officer for the European Union in Thailand.

All three women took to social media to criticize Thammakaset’s lawsuits. All three are charged with libel and defamation; they are tried together.

Many countries in Southeast Asia have criminal defamation laws, but Thailand stands out. Citizens “are just much more aggressive” in using the law to “drag people into legal processes that are slow and expensive,” said Phil Robertson, the deputy director of Human Rights Watch‘s Asia division.

In addition to the criminal defamation law, there is the Computer Crimes Act, which makes it a crime to upload “false” information that “could cause harm to the public”. Another law, which protects the Thai monarchy from criticism, allows ordinary Thais to file complaints for violations.

A British rights watchdog, ARTICLE 19cited statistics from Thailand’s judicial authorities showing that prosecutors and private parties have filed more than 25,000 criminal defamation cases since 2015.

“The business and political elites see this as very effective because the courts are risk averse; they accept almost any case that makes no sense on the face of it,’ Mr Robertson said.

Faced with calls to crack down on the rampant abuse of the courts, the Thai government amended its Code of Criminal Procedure in 2018 to make it easier to dismiss cases against defendants who can claim they are acting in the public interest. But lawyers say little has changed.

Sor Rattanamanee Polkla, the lawyer who Ms. Puttanee, Mrs. Angkhana and Mrs. Thanaporn said she had filed a petition to have the cases dropped under this provision, but the court denied her request.

Thammakaset’s complaint against the three women is about the 2018 video shared by Ms Sutharee, made by Strengthen rights. Mrs. Puttanee works for the organization; Mrs. Sutharee and Mrs. Thanaporn both did.

In their Twitter and Facebook posts, Ms. Puttanee, Ms. Angkhana and Ms. Thanaporn expressed their solidarity with the activists who were persecuted by Thammakaset. Their posts linked to a Fortify Rights press release and a joint statement with other human rights organizations that eventually linked to the video.

Thammakaset has cited the video, which contains an interview with an employee describing how he works long hours and has his passport withheld, in his complaint.

In 2016, Thai authorities ruled that Thammakaset had failed to pay the minimum wage and overtime wages or to provide workers with adequate leave. In 2019, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s order to pay the company about $50,000 to a group of 14 employees who filed the labor complaint.

At a hearing for the three women in March, Chanchai Pheamphon, the owner of Thammakaset, told the judge that he had already “paid his dues” to the workers, but the online criticism continued to damage his business and his reputation.

He said his children had asked him if the family’s money came from “human trafficking, from the sale of slaves”.

“How should a father feel when his children ask him this?” Mr. Chanchai said in a rising voice. “I have to use my rights to fight. But using my rights is seen as threatening, using the law to silence them.”

Mr Chanchai told the court that no one wanted to do business with him anymore. But in March, two rights groups published an investigation showing that after Thammakaset revoked its poultry farming certifications in 2016, a new poultry farm called Srabua was set up by a man who had the same address as Mr Chanchai.

Mr. Chanchai denied any knowledge of Srabua.

When asked by a New York Times reporter if he plans to file more lawsuits against critics of the company, Mr. Chanchai said, “You are a reporter for a major news agency. If someone says you’re a drug dealer, do you fight back?”

According to the Thai Human Rights Lawyers Association, decriminalizing defamation cases could have saved Thai taxpayers $3.45 million between 2016 and 2018. Defendants in civil suits can also expect to pay large sums of money out of pocket.

At the hearing in March, Ms. Puttanee, 52, brought a backpack filled with clothes to court. The commute from her home to the court takes two hours each way, so every time she attends a hearing, she books a hotel at her own expense.

She said she expects the case to take four years if Thammakaset decides to take her argument all the way to the Supreme Court. Nevertheless, Mrs. Puttanee considers herself lucky: she is in a community that has gathered around her and her lawyer works pro bono.

“But I still treat this as harassment,” she said.

At the hearing, Mr. Chanchai explained how Ms. Puttanee’s Twitter posts had defamed his company. His account lasted five hours; Mrs. Puttanee fell asleep during his testimony.

Ms. Angkhana, the former human rights commissioner, is well known in Thailand for her husband, Somchai Neelapaijit, a human rights lawyer who disappeared in 2004 and whose fate remains unknown.

She said the current lawsuit has affected her mental health.

“It’s a repeated trauma when someone attacks you, when you’ve done nothing wrong,” says Ms Angkhana, 67. “This is the real purpose of the company – to make you feel powerless.”

Ms. Thanaporn, 29, said it was ironic to fall victim to the lawsuit she denounced simply by supporting her fellow activists online.

“The fact that I can be sued for this speaks for itself,” she said.

Former President Donald J. Trump told a judge Monday night that he could not defame E. Jean Carroll by denying her decades-old rape allegation because a jury had held him liable only for sexually assaulting her.

His lawyers said in newly filed court documents that Mr. Trump’s denial that he raped Ms. Carroll in a dressing room in a Manhattan department store in the mid-1990s was truthful. Based on the jury’s verdict last month after a two-week civil trial, they argued that Ms. Carroll’s defamation claim should be dismissed.

“The key question in this case is, and always has been, whether a rape occurred in Bergdorf Goodman’s locker room,” Trump’s attorneys, Alina Habba and Michael T. Madaio, wrote, referring to the department store. The jury “found that they didn’t,” she added.

A civil jury last month found Mr Trump, 76, liable for sexually assaulting Ms Carroll – less serious misconduct than rape – and for defaming her when he called her case “a complete scam” and “a hoax and a lie” mentioned. October.

The jury awarded Ms. Carroll $5 million in damages, and shortly after the verdict, Mr. Trump made similar disparaging remarks on a CNN program and on social media. Ms. Carroll, 79, asked the judge to further punish him in a parallel case that is still open to him.

Mr. Trump’s new lawsuit came in that case, which Ms. Carroll filed in 2019. In it, she accused Mr. Trump of slandering her after she first went public with the attack, in an article in a New York magazine. At the time, Mr. Trump called her accusation “totally false” and said he couldn’t have raped her because she wasn’t his “type.” That 2019 defamation case has stalled on appeal and is still pending.

Ms. Carroll’s lead attorney, Roberta A. Kaplan, said in a statement Monday evening that nothing about the verdict in the recent trial contradicted Ms. Carroll’s longstanding claim.

“The jury unanimously found that Donald Trump forcibly inserted his fingers into E. Jean Carroll’s vagina and then lied about it, slandering her when he said he didn’t know who she was, never met her at Bergdorf Goodman, and that she had. made the whole thing up as part of a ‘scam’ or a ‘hoax’,’ Ms Kaplan said.

She added: “The jury believed E. Jean Carroll when she testified that Trump sexually assaulted her. As a result, the jury concluded that Trump knowingly lied about Ms. Carroll while claiming the contrary.”

The recent lawsuit stemmed from a lawsuit Ms. Carroll brought against Mr. Trump last November under a new state law in New York that gives adult victims of sexual abuse a year to sue people who say they have abused for battery even if the statute of limitations had long expired.

The jury awarded Ms. Carroll $2 million in damages for the sexual assault and $3 million for defamation on May 9. Mr Trump is appealing the ruling.

Mr. Trump, who is trying to regain the presidency, continued to verbally attack Ms. Carroll. On May 10, he appeared on CNN and, in response to a moderator’s questions, said he had never met Ms. Carroll, derided her account as “fake” and said the process was “a rigged deal.”

Ms. Carroll’s lawyers then filed court documents asking a judge to allow them to dismiss the separate and prior defamation lawsuit that Ms. Carroll filed against Mr. Trump — sometimes referred to in court documents as Carroll I.

Both Carroll I and the more recent charge that went to trial, known as Carroll II, have been before the same judge, Lewis A. Kaplan of the Federal District Court.

Ms. Carroll’s lawyers said they wanted to include in the Carroll I lawsuit the fact of the jury’s verdict in Carroll II, as well as Mr. Trump’s statements on CNN.

“Trump’s post-verdict defamatory statements demonstrate the depth of his malice toward Carroll, as it is hard to imagine defamatory behavior could be more motivated by hatred, ill-will or spite,” Ms. Carroll’s attorneys wrote.

They said Mr Trump’s conduct supported “very substantial” damages in the still outstanding Carroll I case “to punish Trump, to deter him from engaging in further defamation and to deter others from doing the same.” doing.”

The Carroll I lawsuit was mired in appeal after Mr Trump argued he could not be charged because he made his statements in his official capacity as president. He repeated the statements last year when he was no longer president, prompting Carroll II.

Bob Huggins will keep his job as head men’s basketball coach at West Virginia, the university said Wednesday, but will be suspended for three games and take a pay cut after he twice used an anti-gay slur and derisively mocked Catholics during an interview with a radio station in Cincinnati this week.

The university said it would rework Huggins’ contract and cut his annual salary by $1 million, down from $4.15 million. He will have to undergo sensitivity training and will miss the first three games of the 2023/24 season.

In a joint statementthe president and athletic director of the university said Huggins, the winningest active coach in Division I men’s basketball, would be fired immediately if he made similar offensive comments in the future.

During a Monday interview on Cincinnati radio station 700 WLW, Huggins described fans of Xavier University, a Jesuit institution, with a homophobic insult and underlined the school’s religious affiliation. While discussing his 16-season tenure at the University of Cincinnati and the school’s rivalry with Xavier, Huggins twice issued a homophobic insult to Xavier fans, referring to those who would “throw rubber penises on the floor and then say they didn’t. do it.”

The 69-year-old Huggins apologized as part of the university’s statement, saying he deeply regrets his comments and the pain they had caused.

“I have no excuse for the language I used and I take full responsibility,” he said in Wednesday’s statement. “I will adhere to the actions outlined by the University and Athletic leadership to learn from this incident. I have had several conversations over the last 24 hours with colleagues and friends whom I deeply respect and admire, and I am well aware of the pain I have caused.”

Aside from the pay cut, Huggins will make a personal donation to Xavier to support his Center for Faith and Justice and his Center for Diversity and Inclusion, although the amount of the donation was not specified. He will also have to meet LGBTQ leaders from across the state of West Virginia.

In August 2021, Huggins signed a contract extension through the 2023–24 season, making him one of the highest paid coaches in college basketball. Under his previous contract, Huggins would have had options to coach “or extend his relationship with the university” until June 2027. In Wednesday’s announcement, the university said Huggins’ current contract would be changed to an annual agreement that would end on April 30, 2024.

The university’s statement said the $1 million cut from Huggins’ salary would be used to support the LGBTQ center, mental health counseling center and other organizations.

“While the university has never approved and will never approve the language used on Mondays, we will use this moment to educate how the casual use of inflammatory language and implicit biases impact our culture, our community, and our health and well-being,” said the statement. said.

Huggins has been coaching in West Virginia since 2007. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022 and is one of only six men’s coaches to have 900 career wins in Division I.
