Despite them history they have fought for results and lost every match last season with a goal difference of minus 191.

Their woes led Specsavers to step in, with the opticians first turning to Harry Redknapp for help.

The former Tottenham boss attended training last December, after which Cym won for the first time in three years.

Following Redknapp’s impact, Cym has now turned to local hero Garry Monk.

The former defender, 45, played for Swansea for ten years and later became manager of the club.

His impact is still felt among the locals, with Cym defender Chris Pippins basing his game on that of Monk.

Before taking up a new job as Cambridge boss last week, the former Leeds, Middlesbrough, Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday boss took time out to visit Cym.

He said: “This is a great campaign from Specsavers as it provides insight into the heart of what is going on football in the UK and around the world – grassroots – in a unique and fun way.

That, coupled with the fact that the team is based in Swansea, where I have a playing and coaching history, I just had to get involved and meet the only person in the world who has ever based his game on me!”

Besides Pippins, Cym is full of characters that embody the beautiful game at the core of the base.

Experienced midfielder John Rees is still active at 73.

While winger Shane Prior even admits to having “legs like Bambi”.

Spare a thought for goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald though, as he is still looking for his first clean sheet after a decade at the club.

Monk, meanwhile, has returned to the dugout at Cambridge after a four-year absence.

He replaced Neil Harris, who jumped ship just 14 games into his tenure to return to Millwall.

Monk will have his first game in charge tomorrow when the U’s host Northampton in League One.

SERGIO REGUILON remains stunned by his move to Tottenham.

The Spaniard claims he was told by Ange Postecoglou that he was part of the Spurs boss’ plans at the start of the season.

But he was then loaned out to Manchester United for the first half of the season as cover for the injured Luke Shaw, before being loaned out to Brentford in January.

Reguilon, 27, said: “During the preparation I was very happy and he (Postecoglou) was happy with me, also with the staff.

“I played all the matches like a normal player.

“The week before I went to see him. “Do you want me to be at the club?” “Yes, I have to make a list and you are on my team.” It was strange.

“The next day I was outside training and I didn’t know what happened.”

Destiny Udogie emerged as Postecoglou’s first choice, while Reguilon – signed from Real Madrid for £32m in 2020 – underwent his second and third loans at the club.

This was said by the ex-Atletico Madrid star, who has another year left on his contract with Spurs this summer The times: “I know I can play for Spurs, but many aspects of football are out of the player’s control.

Reguilon has made 67 appearances for Spurs so far, with his last appearance coming two years ago.

Last season he made twelve appearances for Atletico and this season he made another twelve appearances for United.

Reguilon has played five times for Brentford so far.

But with Rico Henry expected to regain his place when he eventually returns from a long-term injury, Reguilon may also have no future at the west London club.
