A team of 21 scientists set out on an expedition in February into the largely uncharted waters of Bounty Trough off the coast of New Zealand’s South Island, hoping to find a wealth of new species.

They said the expedition paid off Sunday with the discovery of 100 new species, a number likely to increase, said Alex Rogers, a marine biologist who led the expedition.

“I expect this number to increase as we run more and more samples,” said Dr. Rogers. “I think that number will be in the hundreds instead of just 100.”

Dozens of mollusks, three fish, a shrimp and a cephalopod, a type of predatory mollusk, were among the new species found during the expedition, which was led by Ocean Census, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the global discovery of life in the Ocean, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand, and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

One creature that caused “a lot of head scratching” is a star-shaped animal about a centimeter across, but researchers have been unable to identify it, said Dr. Rogers. They think it might be a coral.

It is estimated that more than two million species live in the oceans, but only 10 percent of ocean life is known. Learning about aquatic life is crucial because marine ecosystems perform functions that support life on Earth, such as creating food for billions, storing carbon and regulating the climate, said Dr. Rogers.

“We are dealing with a situation where we know marine life is in decline,” he said. “To try to control human activities and prevent this continued decline, we need to understand the distribution of marine life better than we currently do.”

Ocean Census was founded last year by the Nippon Foundation, a Japanese philanthropic organization, and British-based ocean exploration foundation Nekton. When it started its work, Ocean Census set a goal of at least making finds 100,000 new marine species in a decade.

The group focuses on exploring some of the most under-sampled water bodies.

During the February expedition, researchers first mapped the area with an imaging system and video cameras to check whether it would be safe for their equipment and to ensure there were no vulnerable animal communities that could potentially be harmed.

They then deployed what is known as the Brenke sled, a sampling device with two nets, one close to the seabed and the other one meter above it. As it drags along the bottom, it churns around animals that live close to the seabed. To find larger animals, the researchers used other methods, such as baited nets.

Trawling the depths at 4,800 meters – or about the equivalent of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps – researchers collected 1,791 samples.

Given its depth, Bounty Trough is not of great importance to the fishery and is therefore poorly sampled, said Dr. Rogers. Geologists have done research this area but not biologists.

About 240,000 marine species have been discovered and named worldwide to date, but according to Ocean Census, an average of only 2,200 species are discovered each year.

In many water bodies, scientists still have much to learn, said Dr. Rogers.

“It’s probably the equivalent of a space mission,” he said. “We’re still in the early stages, but the number of species we’ve found in the Bounty Trough really tells us we still have a long way to go when it comes to understanding where to find life in the ocean is.”

Steve Nikoui, the father of a U.S. Marine who died in 2021 during the evacuation of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, was arrested and charged with a felony for interrupting President Biden during his State of the Union address, according to Capitol Police.

Mr. Nikoui shouted “Abbey Gate, Abbey Gate” during the president’s speech, a reference to where his son, Lance Cpl. Kareem Nikoui and twelve other troops were killed during the chaotic final days of the American presence in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Police officers quickly removed Mr. Nikoui, 51, from the stand where he was the guest of Representative Brian Mast, Republican of Florida. Mr. Biden paused briefly during the interruption but quickly continued.

A statement from the Capitol Police said officers warned Mr. Nikoui to stop, and when he did not, they removed him from the room.

In the statement, agents said: “This is a routine charge on Capitol Hill. People who illegally demonstrate/disrupt Congress are typically released after paying a $50 fine, so the misdemeanor charge is resolved without a trial.”

Mr. Nikoui has been an outspoken critic of Mr. Biden since the death of his son. In August 2021 he made told The Daily Beast that he blamed the president for the tragedy.

“They sent my son there as a paper pusher and then had the Taliban provide security outside,” Mr. Nikoui said at the time, according to the news organization.

“I blame my own military leaders,” he said, adding: “Biden turned his back on him. That is it.”

Kate Moss demonstrated her modeling talents when she stormed the catwalk at the Marine Serre Womenswear Fall/Winter 2024-2025 show on Monday.

The 50-year-old modeling legend demonstrated alongside other superstars, including Winnie Harlow, at the glamorous event in the French capital.

Showing off her timeless good looks, Kate walked alongside the stunning Canadian star, 29, to show off the eco-conscious brand’s bold upcoming collection.

Kate returned to her indie days in an oversized leather jacket adorned with the brand’s crescent moon logo, with a matching handbag.

She wore plenty of heavy black eye makeup, while her signature dirty blonde locks were worn in loose waves to add to the indie ensemble.

Kate looked stunning in the ensemble, which drowned out her figure thanks to the striking oversized silhouette of the shirt and leather jacket.

While Kate wore a loose style, Winnie showed off her figure in a flowing black dress with a zipper at the front and a bumpy texture.

Perhaps the youngest employee at Paris Fashion Week, joining the superstar couple, was when a model paraded down the catwalk while sitting in a carriage.

Kate’s appearance on the Marine Serre runway came just hours after her look-alike daughter Lila, 21, walked the runway for Stella McCartney.

The accounts of the star’s own company Grace Grove Ltd, published on Thursday, show her salary has risen from £129,458 in 2022 to £359,433 in 2023.

It comes after a very successful year for Lila, having campaigned for the likes of Pepe Jeans – an international denim brand based on Portobello Road in Notting Hill – which happens to be the model’s favorite hangout.

She also starred in a campaign for French brand Maje last year and is currently working with her mother on the front rows of exclusive shows such as Yves Saint Laurent for Paris Fashion Week.

Chuck Mawhinney, whose ability to crawl through the dense jungle and looming elephant grass of South Vietnam and then wait for hours with his aiming rifle to pick off an enemy soldier made him the deadliest sniper in Marine Corps history made, died February 18. 12 in Baker City, a city in the northeastern corner of Oregon. He was 74.

His death was announced by Coles Funeral Home in Baker City. No further details were available.

Mr. Mawhinney, who served in Vietnam from May 1968 to March 1970, had 106 confirmed kills and another 216 probable kills, an average of about four per week — more than the average company, which consisted of about 150 soldiers.

US military snipers included only Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL who served in Iraq and had 160 confirmed kills, and Adelbert Waldronan Army sniper during the Vietnam War with 109 kills, had higher numbers than Mr. Mawhinney.

As a sniper, Mr Mawhinney fulfilled a number of roles. He stayed awake all night with his rifle and night vision goggles, scanning the area around an encampment for raids. He would go on patrol with other Marines, ready to support them if a firefight broke out. But most of the time, he and his spotter, a novice sniper who helped him identify targets, would go out alone, looking for individual targets to kill as a way to undermine enemy morale.

Most of his kills came slowly, a single shot from his bolt-action M40 after hours of waiting. But some came in bursts: On the night of February 14, 1969, Mr. Mawhinney watched as a column of North Vietnamese soldiers crossed a shallow river near Da Nang on their way to a Marine camp. He began firing quickly but methodically and within 30 seconds he had killed sixteen. The rest withdrew.

He claimed no special talent as a sniper, only a willingness to practice endless hours. But he also demonstrated an unusual ability to endure grueling hours of silence, hidden in the jungle, alert to targets as insects and snakes crawled over him.

He said he had a resting heart rate of just 50 beats per minute, and he used the pumping of his heart and the rise and fall of his breathing to time his shots.

Mr. Mawhinney grew up in rural eastern Oregon and learned to shoot from his maternal grandfather. He was an advocate of deer hunting, and he spent days in the woods, camping and following his prey until he got one. It was unintentionally perfect training for his wartime future.

He was neither boastful nor shy about his task. He didn’t like killing, he said, but he accepted it as an important part of keeping his fellow Marines safe.

“I was just doing what I was trained to do,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 2000. ‘I was in the country for a long time in a very hot area. I didn’t do anything special.”

When one of his commanders installed a sniper scoreboard in their camp, ranking each man by his kill count, Mr. Mawhinney protested. It was distasteful, he said – and worse, it could encourage people to take fatal risks in the name of competition. The sign came down.

“You are at war with another country, and these people are your enemy,” he told Vietnam magazine in 2003. “I don’t think I hated the enemy at all. I did respect them. But my job was to demoralize them.”

Charles Benjamin Mawhinney was born on February 23, 1949 in Lakeview, Oregon, the son of Charles and Beulah (Franz) Mawhinney. His father had served in the Marines during World War II and fought in the Pacific theater.

After graduating high school in 1967, Chuck wanted to become a Navy pilot. But a Marine Corps recruiter convinced him by promising he could delay his enlistment by four months, until the end of deer season.

The Marines had not had dedicated snipers since World War II, but by 1967 the Corps had changed its mind. Mr. Mawhinney was among the first to complete the new Scout Sniper School at Camp Pendleton, a Marine Corps installation in Southern California. He graduated at the top of his class.

Despite his credentials, he was initially assigned to the regular infantry. Eager to be in a sniper platoon, he feigned a toothache to be sent to the rear, where he found a unit in need of a sniper. He lobbied for a transfer and got one.

Mr. Mawhinney returned to the United States in the spring of 1970 and was discharged in August. He returned to Oregon, where he worked for the United States Forest Service. He retired in 1997.

He married Robin Hood in 1970. Survivors include their three sons, Cody, Dennis and Don.

Mr. Mawhinney was silent about his years as a sniper; most of his friends in Oregon didn’t know the details. He didn’t even tell his wife.

For decades, another Vietnam-era Marine Corps sniper has Carlos Hathcockwas credited with the most murders, with 93 confirmed – a distinction Mr Mawhinney declined to dispute.

Mr. Mawhinney remained silent for a long time about his years as a sniper. But in 1991, a friend and former sniper, Joseph T. Ward, published a book revealing Mr. Mawhinney’s murder count.Credit…Ballantine Books

But in 1991 a friend and former sniper came along Joseph T. Wardpublished “Dear Mom: A Sniper’s Vietnam,” in which he revealed Mr. Mawhinney’s kill count.

As his reputation became known, Mr. Mawhinney found himself increasingly in demand as a speaker, consultant and adjudicator. “The Sniper: The Untold Story of the Marine Corps’ Greatest Marksman of All Time, a biography of Mr. Mawhinney by Jim Lindsay, was published last year.

At one point, a Marine Corps admirer managed to track down Mr. Mawhinney’s M40 sniper rifle. It has been renovated and is now on display at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Virginia.

It seems like a world ago on February 5, 1999 Princess Margaretha's grandson made his first royal appearance in front of the public as a page of honor for the late queen.

He held the role between 2009 and 2015 was responsible for wearing his great aunt's dress during ceremonial events.

Now turning 25, action man Arthur Chatto makes a living as a member of the Royal Marines, the first Royal Marine to join the regiment. He is the 30th in line to the throne.

After attending Westminster Cathedral Choir school, Arthur followed in the footsteps of Princes Harry and William by attending Eton College.

At Eton he was part of the Combined Cadet Force, which teaches students a range of military skills. He then followed his older brother Sam to the University of Edinburgh.

Arthur, who studied art history, combined his studies with a job as a personal trainer at the BoundFitness gym in the city.

In a profile of the young royal, shared on Instagram, Arthur wrote: 'I am a level 3 personal trainer, I specialize in strength and endurance training with a military focus.'

Princess Margaret's grandson is also said to be a fan of outdoor sports, including mountain climbing. The adventurous monarch has even done ice diving in Greenland and climbing in the Alps.

Arthur, who like Prince William and Harry is a keen environmentalist, was also part of a four-man team that completed an epic romp across Britain to raise money for the British Red Cross and Just One Ocean in 2020.

Speaking about the 3,800km GB Row Challenge, which took 38 days to complete, Arthur said preparing for the challenge had been 'mentally' and physically very demanding.

The preparation was not easy, as he reportedly went on 20-mile walks and camped in the Scottish Highlands in preparation for his uniformed role.

Arthur was greeted at the finish line at St Katherine Docks in London by his family and his long-term girlfriend, Lizzie Friend.

Lizzie was a fellow student at the University of Edinburgh, where Arthur studied, and a source previously told the Daily Mail: 'We hit it off straight away.

'She is very sweet and they make a very nice couple. He took her to Royal Ascot this summer as his date.'

Arthur has also made royal history, as in 2021 he became the first member to join the Marines. The late queen is said to be 'pleased and proud' of her great-nephew's achievements.

He has since turned heads as a royal heartthrob when he wore his Marine uniform to the Queen's Thanksgiving service at St Paul's Cathedral in 2022.

Arthur amassed a following on his now-deleted Instagram account after often posting revealing snaps, including a topless photo taken during a 'Scottish dip' with older brother Samuel during his freshers' week at university.

Although there is no official Instagram account, this has not stopped Arthur's photos from surfacing as adoring fans have kept his online presence alive by creating fan pages where they share photos and videos of the royal family.

The royal family seems to have enjoyed watching The Crown, he admitted to The Telegraph.

Arthur said, “Yes, I looked at it, I think it's just an interpretation. So I just kind of remember what they really are like and don't let the TV personality taint my judgment of any of them.”

The Princess of Wales will appear in BBC Two’s Secrets of the Aquarium tonight.

Kate, 41, made a surprise visit to staff at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth in July 2022, when she also attended a Protect Our Future class with young people and watched the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix.

The BBC programme, which received a four-star review for its first episodes, is a six-part documentary and was filmed in the last six months of 2022.

It shows how much planning goes into caring for the animals in the depths of Plymouth. Kate appears in the season finale, airing at 6:30 p.m., to take a look at the aquarium’s seagrass conservation project.

Ahead of the Princess’s visit, an excited staff member practices her bow, before explaining how a royal visit to the project ‘made people sit up and listen to what we do’.

The seagrass team has spent the past year nurturing seedlings at the aquarium for outplanting into the wild, with extraordinary success, the program said.

Their next challenge is to convince people not to damage the fragile new pastures. With that in mind, they invited the princess to visit the project, and she accepted.

Kate, wearing a dark jumper with white nautical stripes, paired with £199 Holland Cooper white linen shorts with gold buttons, shows interest in planting the seedlings in the scenes airing tonight.

Esther, seagrass education officer, says: ‘It doesn’t matter how many people hear about it [seagrass]it’s still happening down there, out of sight, beneath the waves.’

The team member is then filmed attempting a greeting perfect for royalty, saying, “I hope we don’t get too impressed.” Shall we bow?’

About Kate’s visit, Esther says: ‘She came and stood next to me. We showed her what to do and yes, that was exciting, literally standing shoulder to shoulder with royalty.

‘Kate’s visit was so important. Not only for the aquarium, but also for seagrass, for the project. The royal family’s visit made people sit up and listen to what we do. “Okay, if royalty is interested, it has to be something worth listening to.”

According to the National Maritime Aquarium, the BBC Two show has been 18 months in the making and “shows staff as they face challenges, heartbreak and happiness while caring for more than 5,000 amazing animals.”

The documentary series is narrated by Thick of It and Boat Story star Joanna Scanlan and features stories about caring for animals and conservation efforts.

This includes creating a cozy cave for Larry the lobster, rehoming a turtle from the Maldives, the unforeseen problems of seagrass restoration, connecting people in local care homes to the sea, and lots of content about a cheeky green turtle .

Clare Mottershead, BBC Commissioning Editor, said: ‘We look forward to bringing the wonders of this underwater world to our audiences and sharing the surprising stories of the creatures that call it home and the dedicated team who care for them.’

Olly Reed, Head of Marketing and Communications, added: ‘We’re pleased to be able to showcase the work of our charity and Aquarium to BBC viewers.

‘Our charity is committed to connecting people with the Ocean, so we’re excited to bring that connection to people’s homes across Britain!’

It comes as Buckingham Palace has maintained a contemptuous silence over Omid Scobie’s explosive new book, which labels Kate a ‘Stepford woman’ and ‘shiny thing’.

Scobie’s ‘depressingly toxic’ Endgame was today written off as yet another book by those working inside Buckingham Palace, MailOnline can reveal. Omid is particularly cruel to Prince William and his wife, who he says is called “Katie Keen.”

It is not known when the episode was filmed, but Kate was last officially in Plymouth in July 2022, when she attended a Protect Our Future class with young people at Trinity Pier and saw the Great Britain Sail Grand Prix. She is pictured with Sir Ben Ainslie

He told the Standard that Prince William was now ‘very upset, very short-tempered, quick to react’ and that staff ‘need to check which way the wind is blowing before they talk to him’.

Scobie told the Standard: “I wonder how happy he is in his role,” adding that he believes there is a “growing rift between father and son.”

Today he hit back at his critics on Instagram – ignoring some reviews – stating: ‘After all the nonsense written by people who haven’t seen the book, I’m looking forward to everyone actually being able to read Endgame for themselves. ‘.

Buckingham Palace has maintained a contemptuous silence, but a royal source has dismissed Scobie’s Endgame as yet another book about the Windsors not worthy of official comment.

The insider told MailOnline when asked if there was any truth to Mr Scobie’s claims: ‘Hundreds of books have been written about the royal family.’ Endgame was released today, but some reviews were bad.

Even the Sussex-sympathizing New York Times was withering, likening his writing to a single-section AI chatbot compared to a press release from Meghan and Harry.

The new book about the royal family was labeled ‘evil’ and ‘downright nasty’ last night. Well-placed sources described wild claims that Charles, Camilla and William were plotting to undermine Harry and Meghan as ‘depressingly toxic’.

Omid Scobie’s book also takes aim at the Princess of Wales, labeling her “cold” and castigating her for supporting mental health care while “ignoring Meghan’s cries for help.”

It tries to stir up controversy over the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s joke to deflect questions about the Sussexes’ impressive interview with Oprah Winfrey by saying: ‘Oprah who?’

He says it made Edward and Sophie seem “casually bigoted.” Endgame, which was published in Australia yesterday and hits shelves here today, paints an almost comically negative picture of the monarchy, with royals depicted as pantomime-style villains.

Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace have declined to comment, believing they have nothing to gain from pursuing the claims. Charles and William were both busy with public engagements close to their hearts: the King hosted a global investment summit and his son attended the Tusk Conservation Awards.

Those in royal circles described the book as ‘downright nasty’, ‘cruel’ and a ‘skewed’ retelling of family events ‘in the Sussex style’.

A big change can do wonders for the soul. And one Marine Corps veteran has discovered that moving to a new country can be life-changing — and really expand your vocabulary.

Presten Boydstun, 22, found himself increasingly depressed while serving in the Marines and struggling with the deaths of several friends.

Presten, who had served four years in the Marine Corps in San Diego, needed to make a change in his life and decided to take the plunge and buy a one-way ticket to Australia to work on a cattle ranch instead.

“I had a hard time when some of my friends passed away,” Presten explained to Insider.

“It became a bit sad and went down the path of depression, which was quite difficult for me.”

According to the publication, a family friend of Presten’s operated a cattle ranch in rural Western Australia and offered him a job on the farm – which he eagerly accepted.

Presten, who honorably retired from the Marine Corps in July, arrived in Western Australia on September 1.

Immediately upon arrival, he went straight to work on the site, which was located a few hours outside Perth, the capital of Western Australia.

Presten, who is in Australia on a one-year holiday visa, now works with cattle on the cattle ranch and documents his idyllic lifestyle and adventures with his border collie mix, Jess, on TikTok to his 286,000 followers.

Although he loves his job and life in the country town, Presten has noticed some major cultural differences between Australia and the United States. He admits that understanding the jargon used was an eye-opening experience.

“I’ve written down some statements that I’ve heard so far or that have been brought to my attention by Australian people,” he explained in one clip with 2.3 million views.

He then took out a notebook, in which he had written down the new words he had learned since arriving Down Under.

“I bet there’s a lot more to learn, but enjoy,” he captioned the clip.

Some of the new words in his extensive list were ‘oi’ – for hello, or getting someone’s attention, ‘na-ja’ is yes, ‘na’ is no, and ‘Eskies’ – the collective term for coolers.

Other words he mentioned were ‘avo’ (avocado), ‘arvo’ (afternoon) and ‘ute’ (short for utility truck – known in the US as a pick-up truck).

Presten added that ‘dodgy’ meant a bit rough or vague, ‘bottle-o’ was a liquor store, ‘lappy’ was a laptop, ‘fanging’ was speeding or fast, a ‘hoon’ was someone who drove recklessly , if you ‘ If you are ‘dazed’ you are tired, ‘lollies’ is candy, ‘dart or cigarette’ is cigarette and ‘television’ is television.

He also added some other sayings to the list, such as “ken oed,” which means “heck yeah,” and “we’re not here to [f***] spinning’ is ‘we’re not here to mess around’, ‘far away’ which was crazy, ‘downright’ is busy.

Despite the different language, Presten is loving his new life and learning some new slang.

Prestens Aussie slang

Oi: Hello

Yes Na: Yes

After: No

Fanging: driving too fast

Hoon: Reckless driving

Eski: Cooler

Avo: Avocado

Sketchy: rough or unreliable

Cursed: Exhausted

Dart or cigarette: Cigarette

Far away: crazy

“Really cool,” he said enthusiastically. “I absolutely love it here.”

TikTok users – mostly Australians – loved the list, with thousands of them commenting on posts.

“As an Australian, I honestly didn’t realize how many ‘sayings’ we have until you point them out in such a huge list,” one person laughed.

‘This is the best list of our Aussie sayings ever put together!!’ shouted a second.

‘Fellow American in Aus. You still need about fifty of those notebooks… Even after nine years, I still hear something new at least once a week,” joked another expat.

As well as learning some new words, Presten said he also had to adapt to driving on the opposite side of the road and some Australian dishes, such as Vegemite.

He’s documented himself drinking Milo and attempting a Tim Tam slam, which involves biting the end of the iconic chocolate chip cookie and drinking a (usually) hot drink through it.

Presten even adopted Vegemite, which, despite being quite divisive, he learned to love.

“It’s weird at first, but then it changes your life,” he joked.

Prince William enjoyed the company of some of the world’s biggest stars as the five winners of the Earthshot Prize 2023 were announced in Singapore today.

The royal, 41, perfectly co-ordinated with the ceremony’s host Hannah Waddingham, 49, – with William donning a sharp velour suit and dickie bow, while the Ted Lasso star wore a dazzling black ballgown with an emerald sash – as the pair strolled a green carpet for the 2023 Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony.

There was further glamour at the environmental prize, held at The Theatre at Mediacorp in Singapore, when Cate Blanchett, 54, looking elegant in a cream embroidered trouser suit, posed for photos alongside the heir to the throne.

Stars from the world of showbiz and politics had jetted across the globe to attend the glitzy ceremony including US actor Lana Condor, and former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern – with some helping to present the awards.

Australian wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin’s son Robert Irwin also joined those presenting awards on stage – with US star Sterling K. Brown joining Ms Waddingham as co-host.

There were music idols galore present too, with British band Bastille, US group OneRepublic and singer songwriter Freya Ridings attending the event at Prince William’s invitation.

Five recipient organisations – including a marine protection charity and a soil carbon intiative – from 15 shortlisted were awarded £1million each to continue working on solutions to the climate crisis.

The organisations scooping the prestigious prize this year were announced as Acción Andina, GRST, WildAid Marine Program, S4S Technologies, and Boomitra.

On the green carpet, home-grown star Hannah Waddingham, in a resplendent trailing ballgown, arguably stole the show as she sashayed down alongside Prince William.

Earlier, Prince William admitted he believes green campaigning is ‘an uphill battle’ while wishing finalists in the prize good luck.

The awards are aimed at recognising solutions to ‘repair’ the planet, and will see five category winners presented with £1 million each to scale up their environmental ideas.

The Prince of Wales, together with Hannah Jones, chief executive of the Earthshot Prize, met all 15 finalists shortlisted for the awards on Tuesday morning at the base of the world famous Supertrees in Gardens by the Bay.

While there, he heard more about their projects and how the Earthshot fellowship retreat in Singapore this week has helped them.

Hearing how several of the finalists hoped to scale their projects going forwards, William praised them for their work so far, saying: ‘Campaigning activism is really hard work sometimes, it’s an uphill battle, that’s the point of Earthshot – to elevate the wonderful work you’re all doing. It’s mine and Hannah’s job to scale you up.

‘Good luck to all of you.’

William also spoke with Nidhi Pant of S4S Technologies based in India, one of the Build A Waste Free World finalists – revealing that he speaks to his children about food waste.
