During the brutal Battle of Okinawa in Japan, in the final months of World War II, a group of American soldiers took up residence in the palace of a royal family who had fled the fighting. When a palace administrator returned after the war was over, he later said, the treasure was gone.

Some of these valuables turned up decades later in the attic of the Massachusetts home of a World War II veteran whom the Federal Bureau of Investigation failed to identify when announcing the find last week.

The veteran’s family discovered the cache of vibrant paintings and pottery; large fragile roles; and an intricate hand-drawn map after his death last year, and they reported the discovery to the agency’s Art Crime Team.

Geoffrey Kelly, a special agent and art theft coordinator for the bureau’s Boston field office, was assigned to the case and took the artifacts to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Asian Art in Washington. The recovered items were returned to Okinawa in January and a formal repatriation ceremony will take place in Japan next month.

“It’s an exciting moment when you see the scrolls unfolding before you, and you’re witnessing history, and you’re witnessing something that hasn’t been seen by many people in a very long time,” he said.

Verified by Smithsonian experts as authentic artifacts of the former Ryukyu Kingdom, a 450-year-old dynasty that ruled Okinawa as a tributary state of China’s Ming Dynasty, the FBI turned the items over to the agency’s Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations US Army. Command. The cultural heritage specialists brought the precious pieces back to Okinawa.

“Very few objects from that kingdom survive,” said Travis Seifman, an associate professor at the Art Research Center at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. “Reclaiming heritage, reclaiming cultural treasures and knowledge of their own history is very important to many people in Okinawa.”

The Ryukyu Kingdom ruled in Okinawa from the early 15th century until 1879, when Japan annexed the kingdom as a prefecture.

The cache of 22 artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries includes two portraits of Ryukyu kings – the only two of as many as 100 painted portraits known to have survived the war – “an incredible find,” he said.

A typewritten letter written by a U.S. soldier stationed in the Pacific theater during World War II was found with the artifacts and indicated the items had been taken from Okinawa, authorities said.

The letter described the pieces being smuggled out of Japan and trying — and failing — to sell them to a museum in the United States, said Col. Andrew Scott DeJesse, the cultural heritage preservation officer who collected the artifacts. accompanied to Okinawa.

The veteran, who was stationed in Europe, found the artifacts near a dumpster, Colonel DeJesse said, and recognizing their value, he took them to Massachusetts.

“Samurai swords, katanas, things about military personnel, that was always accepted,” Colonel DeJesse said, describing how American commanders approved soldiers’ war trophies from the battlefield.

During World War II, cultural heritage researchers known as Monuments Officers in Europe were tracking down millions of works of art, books and other valuables stolen by the Nazis. There were also officers stationed in Japan, “but the looting of heritage sites,” Colonel DeJesse said, was “not really known,” adding that Americans were not the only ones taking items from war zones.

‘The Japanese empire did it everywhere. So were the Nazis, and so was the Soviet Union. That happened systematically,” he says.

The Battle of Okinawa, which has been described as “82 days of the costliest fighting in the Pacific,” was one of the bloodiest campaigns of the Second World War. About 100,000 Japanese civilians and 60,000 troops were killed. More than 12,000 soldiers, sailors and marines died in the three-month battle. Works of art and other valuables were not the only items stolen. Some researchers have said that American soldiers took skulls and other body parts as trophies.

After the war ended in 1945, Bokei Maehira, a palace steward, returned to the palace to check on the heirlooms – including crowns, silk robes, royal portraits and other artifacts – that he and others had hidden in a trench on the palace grounds. . He found the palace reduced to ashes and the trench looted, he wrote in an academic article published in 2018.

Among the loot was ‘Omorosaushi’, a collection of Ryukyuan folk songs dating back centuries.

The US government repatriated the Omorosaushi to Okinawa in 1953, after an American commander, Carl W. Sternfelt, took the spoils of war to Harvard University for assessment.

In 1954, the United States signed along with dozens of other countries The Hague Conventiona treaty established by the United Nations to protect cultural property in armed conflict.

Still, Col. DeJesse, who has deployed twice to Afghanistan and once to Iraq, said part of his and other heritage officials’ job is training military commanders and soldiers who are unaware of that obligation.

“It’s a big problem. We advise them, ‘Hey, don’t touch it, don’t pick it up. It belongs to someone else. Just like you wouldn’t want your own church and your own museum to be looted,” he said.

The government of Japan registered other missing items from the Ryukyu Kingdom with the FBI’s National Stolen Art File in 2001. These include black-and-white photographs depicting a collection of important Okinawa cultural heritage that, according to Professor Seifman, are “in many cases all that survive from sites and objects lost or destroyed” in World War II.

Among the items recorded were the scrolls found in the Massachusetts veteran’s attic.

The veteran’s family, to whom the FBI has granted anonymity, will not face charges.

“It’s not always about prosecuting and putting someone in jail,” Mr Kelly said. “A big part of what we do is ensure that stolen property is returned to its rightful owners, even if it is many generations later.”

A Haitian migrant has been charged with raping a 15-year-old girl at a hotel serving as a migrant shelter in Massachusetts, authorities said Thursday.

Corey B. Alvarez, 26, was arrested Thursday pleaded not guilty at his arraignment that day in Hingham District Court on a charge of aggravated rape of a child. He legally entered the United States through New York in June 2023, according to James Covington, a spokesman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations unit in Boston. But it was unclear what specific immigration program Mr. Alvarez entered the country through.

The charges come as Boston and other cities grapple with questions about migrant housing and amid an intense debate across the country over U.S. immigration policy. The killing of a 22-year-old woman on the University of Georgia campus in February became a political flashpoint when a Venezuelan migrant was charged with the crime, with Republicans including former President Donald J. Trump blaming the death for President Biden’s policies. Such statements have struck many liberals as inflammatory rhetoric.

National data show that there is no causal link between immigration and crime in the country, and that the growth of illegal immigration is not leading to higher local crime rates. Lots of research to have found it That immigrants Are less likely than people born in the United States commit crimes.

In the Massachusetts case, both Mr. Alvarez and the teen, who is disabled, lived at the Comfort Inn in Rockland, a suburb of Boston, according to Rockland police. It was not clear whether the girl was also a migrant.

The Comfort Inn is part of a state and federal program to house migrant families, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. There are approximately 7,500 families registered in the emergency shelter system across Massachusetts, with just under 3,900 of them in hotels or motels, according to government figures Friday. The state reported this in December just over 3,500 families receive emergency housing were migrants, refugees or asylum seekers.

After police responded to the scene, the girl was transported to South Shore Hospital for treatment, authorities said, and Mr. Alvarez’s room was searched, but officers found no visible evidence of the crime. They added that Mr. Alvarez agreed to come to the police station for questioning, and that he was not arrested when he left with the officers.

Mr. Alvarez is currently being held without bail pending a hearing on March 22, which he has surrendered his passport. The investigation is ongoing.

The ICE unit in Boston has assigned an immigration detainer for Mr. Alvarez to the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office. This means the agency has been asked to notify the federal agency before Mr. Alvarez is released so that ICE can take custody and initiate deportation proceedings against him.

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey told WBZ News on Friday that Mr. Alvarez “was vetted by the state in terms of a background check and a check that we do for all entries into our shelter, and he approved that.”

On XHouse Speaker Mike Johnson blamed Mr. Alvarez’s presence in the country on “the president’s reckless border policies.” He added: “There are no reasons why such tragedies can occur.”

Brian Kelley, Mr. Alvarez’s lawyer, said in an interview Saturday that he was frustrated by the harsh anti-migrant rhetoric. He said critics have “really crossed the line of presumption of innocence and just assumed this young man did this.”

He added that no one “makes these assumptions about any other group of people coming to the United States.”

A British mother living in the US has revealed the big difference she has noticed in the eating habits between British people and Americans.

Although the US is famous for serving large portions, the difference British mother Caroline discovered surprised her.

Posting on TikTok under her guidance @mummiesflippinhouseCaroline filmed herself visiting an Irish-themed store in Boston, Massachusetts.

Once inside the store, you can see her browsing for snacks and sweet treats, including a host of items popular in Britain such as Mr Kipling bakery products and Quavers crisps.

She then has an unexpected moment of clarity when she realizes a huge difference between the way Brits and Americans enjoy snacks.

Caroline revealed in the video a big difference between the way Brits and Americans enjoy snacks

Caroline said: ‘One thing I’ve noticed while living in America is that British people in general tend to [prefer] chocolate, while Americans often do that [prefer] sweets’.

She picked up a pack of Haribo wine gums and added: ‘They’re more likely to eat a snack like this than a chocolate bar. British people love a chocolate bar.’

It comes after she posted a video showcasing uniquely American quirks, from relationships with neighbors to fast food chains.

She told her 707,000 followers: ‘I didn’t realize how sensitive Americans are, everything is very literal. Like I could say, “The sky is blue” and someone will argue with me and say, “Sometimes it’s red!”

Nevertheless, she found them ‘very hospitable and very friendly’. Caroline remembered a sweet anecdote from her time in Virginia.

“Our neighbor came by with a bag of popcorn and said, ‘I’m just dropping by to welcome you!’ before bursting into laughter and joking: “Ha, that would never happen in my country.”

She has since moved to the East Coast and discovered that people are more on her wavelength.

‘People [in Boston] are a bit sturdier, which is a lot more like British people, and I think I land better with Bostonians than with Southern people’.

And like many Brits, Caroline wasn’t entirely aware of the breadth of American accents, but confessed, “I think that probably goes both ways.”

“I thought it was like California, and the East Coast, and Texas. I didn’t know a Minnesota accent existed, I love it.

“My husband says Minnesota accents sound more Canadian than Canadians.”

Researchers at the New England Aquarium were conducting regular surveys of the waters south of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in Massachusetts last week when something caught their attention.

What they saw, a whale with no dorsal fin, led researchers to think it might be a North Atlantic right whale, a critically endangered species that the aquarium keeps a close eye on. But the whale’s skin was spotty, and if it was a whale, something would have been wrong.

“I had a bit of a strange feeling about it,” Orla O’Brien, a senior university researcher, said in an interview. “Something seemed wrong.”

So when the whale resurfaced and Ms. O’Brien and her observation partner, Kate Laemmle, a research technician, could see its distinctly shaped head and mottled gray-white skin, they couldn’t believe their eyes: Could it be a gray whale are? whale? In the Atlantic Ocean?

“It was really hard to understand it mentally,” Ms O’Brien said.

But it was a gray whale, an aquarium sighting described in a statement Tuesday as “an incredibly rare event.”

Gray whales are regularly found in the North Pacific Ocean, but sightings in the Atlantic Ocean, where the whales disappeared in the 18th century, are extremely rare. Experts say it’s not clear why they disappeared, but whaling may have been a factor.

According to the aquarium, five gray whales have been sighted in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in the past 15 years. The most recent occurred off the coast of Florida in December, and the New England Aquarium believes the whale is the same gray whale that researchers spotted off Nantucket last week.

Scientists say climate change is largely responsible for the strange sightings. The Northwest Passage, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans between the Canadian mainland and the North Pole, has been ice-free during the summer months in recent years, partly due to rising global temperatures. Without ice, gray whales could swim through the passage, something that would not have been possible in the last century, the aquarium said.

The whale spotted by Ms. O’Brien and Ms. Laemmle did not appear to be in bad condition, and the two observed the whale feeding, “which is good,” Ms. O’Brien said.

“But you’re left asking, ‘How did it get to this?’ share,” she said. “Which is not a positive story overall, because these passageways are only being created to allow travel through due to warming temperatures.”

Ms O’Brien said she and Ms Laemmle were unable to assess the whale’s age or sex, but planned to send photos to researchers in the Pacific to help identify it. She also said the only way to track the whale would be to report other sightings.

Joshua Stuart, a quantitative ecologist at Oregon State University, who published a study on gray whales in Octobersaid the gray whale sighting in the Atlantic Ocean was “super cool,” but there were two important contextual elements.

First, whales can swim between ocean basins because of melted ice in the Arctic, which he said is “an expected outcome of climate change.”

Second, said Dr. Stuart, the gray whale comes from what is known as an “unusual mortality event” in the past four years, most likely due to prey loss in the Arctic. The most recent estimates estimate there are about 14,000 gray whales alive, up from 27,000 in 2019, he said.

Dr. Stuart said the mass extinction appears to be waning. During mass mortality events, gray whales begin feeding on things they don’t normally eat or appear in places where they are not normally seen, such as the Atlantic Ocean.

“There is a possibility that some of these unusual observations in the Atlantic Ocean could be a result of that,” he said. The gray whales in the Pacific and Arctic “just don’t get what they need to survive, so they look elsewhere for food, so we see them in all kinds of strange places.”

But the sporadic sightings of gray whales outside their usual habitat could be a sign of things to come, he said.

“What’s really cool is that we can track the recolonization of the Atlantic gray whale in real time,” said Dr. Stuart.

He said he did not expect a full recolonization of the Atlantic gray whale to occur anytime soon, noting that the process could take decades, even centuries. But because of the rapid warming of the water, Dr. Stuart, “we may be witnessing the very beginning of that.”

Still, Ms O’Brien said it was too early to say whether something like this would happen.

“The timeline goes beyond what we could observe,” she said. “It would take a very long time for that many whales to come and stay here.”

Donald Trump moved closer to a rematch with Joe Biden in November when he defeated Nikki Haley, his last rival for the Republican nomination, on Super Tuesday.

The former president, 77, dominated the biggest day of primaries. He won 11 states by 9:30 p.m., leaving the former South Carolina governor’s dreams of the White House hanging by a thread.

Trump quickly won overwhelming victories in the states of Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Maine, Alabama, Massachusetts, Arkansas, Texas, Colorado and Minnesota.

Haley is still clinging to a glimmer of hope in Vermont, where she is neck-and-neck with Trump with about half the votes counted.

Elsewhere, she didn’t come close as Trump, the runaway Republican frontrunner, headed full steam ahead into the November general election.

The results of Super Tuesday cemented his absolute control over the Republican Party and led to increasing calls for Haley to quit the race.

Meanwhile, Biden is making gains on the Democratic side as polls close across the country. He faces only token opposition for his party’s presidential nomination.

And Trump’s string of victories on Tuesday night will make it virtually impossible mathematically for Haley to catch the former president.

Tuesday’s elections will award more than a third of Republican delegates — and more than 70% of the number needed to secure the nomination.

Haley pledged to stay in the race until the Super Tuesday contests but has made no other promises, and her campaign has no public events planned on Tuesday or beyond.

She is at her home in South Carolina and will not make any public comments. Trump is expected to address supporters at Mar-a-Lago later Tuesday evening.

Biden will be kept informed of the election results by his staff throughout the night, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Both the Biden and Trump camps are preparing for a rematch, tooThe earliest nominations for his party are March 12 for Trump and March 19 for Biden.

But after Tuesday, the battle for the general election will effectively begin. Both men are ready.

“We have to beat Biden — he’s the worst president in history,” Trump told Fox & Friends on Tuesday.

“If we lose this election, you’re going to come back to Donald Trump,” Biden said on the DeDe in the Morning radio show in North Carolina. “The way he talks, the way he acted, the way he treated the African-American community, I think it’s a disgrace.”

However, voters appear unenthusiastic about a repeat of the 2020 election, which Biden won and Trump wrongly claimed victory. Polls show that a majority of voters wanted an option other than Biden or Trump.

So now each campaign will have to focus on rallying their supporters and convincing independent voters to come to the polls this November.

And the candidates will hit the road to make their case to the American people.

On Saturday, Biden and Trump will hold separate campaign events in Georgia, a critical battleground state. No interaction is expected from them.

Biden became the first Democrat since Bill Clinton to win Georgia in 2020. Trump was convinced he had won the country and now faces federal and state charges over his efforts to overturn the results there.

An Air Force officer who set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in DC in protest against the war in Gaza has died in the hospital

Aaron Bushnell, 25, was an ‘aspiring engineer’ and seeking to ‘transition out of the military.’ The US Air Force confirmed on Monday that he succumbed to his injuries overnight.

He was hospitalized in critical condition on Sunday after he doused himself in accelerant and struck a lighter, causing his body to become consumed by flames. DC Fire and EMS said he sustained ‘life-threatening injuries’.

Horrific video of the incident showed Bushnell explaining the reasons for his ‘extreme act of protest’ while he walked up to the building and screamed ‘Free Palestine’ – as his body went up in flames.

The fire burned for more than a minute before police and security staff managed to extinguish it.

Aaron Bushnell was a DevOps engineer based in San Antonio, Texas, according to his LinkedIn

The active-duty airman was a DevOps engineer based in San Antonio, Texas, according to his LinkedIn profile. He touted himself having ‘very good communication skills’ and ‘thriving in team environments’.

Bushnell was pursuing his bachelor’s degree in computer software engineering and is CompTIA Security+ certified, a credential that indicates he has the baseline skills to perform core security functions and pursue an IT security career.

He had apparent links to at least two anarchist groups, Burning River Anarchist Collective and Mutual Aid Street Solidarity – both of which are based in Ohio. Bushnell followed the groups on Facebook.

He was seemingly raised in a devout Christian family and even worked for Paraclete Press, a Christian book and music publisher based in Massachusetts where his mother still works, according to the company’s website. His father owns a construction company.

During his youth, Bushnell also performed in a local indoor marching band called Spirit Winter Percussion.

Video shows how Bushnell approached the heavily-guarded Israeli embassy on DC’s International Drive just before 1pm on Sunday. He was in combat uniform and speaking into a camera on a selfie-stick.

‘My name is Aaron Bushnell,’ he told the camera, ‘I am an active duty member of the United States Air Force and I will no longer be complicit in genocide.

‘I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all.

‘This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.’

For more than 30 seconds he walked on silently, passing the neighboring Chinese embassy and holding an open flask of liquid in his left hand.

As he reached the embassy, he placed the camera on the ground and marched to the gate, showering himself in the fluid before placing his service cap on his head.

Tossing the flask away, Bushnell struggled to ignite his lighter as a voice is heard challenging him.

His camera recorded an unseen man asking ‘Hi sir, can I help you?’ as he approached the embassy gates.

Twelve seconds later the voice is heard asking again ‘Can I help you, sir?’ before Bushnell struck a lighter and ignited the fluid.

Dailymail.com has chosen not to show the subsequent footage which recorded Bushnell being consumed by flames for more than a minute before police and security staff managed to extinguish them.

The video shows the flames spreading all over his body, engulfing his head as he continues to scream ‘Free Palestine’, his voice cracking in agony as the flames intensify. He managed to stand for almost a minute before falling to the ground.

Sirens were already wailing in the background and a man in plain clothes pointed a pistol at him as others doused him with fire extinguishers.

He was taken to hospital by DC Fire and EMS with ‘critical and life-threatening injuries’.

Sunday morning, before he headed to the embassy, Bushnell seemingly promoted his act of protest on Facebook, sharing a link to his LillyAnarKitty twitch account, where he live-streamed the demonstration.

‘Many of us like to ask ourselves, “What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?”‘ Bushnell wrote. ‘The answer is, you’re doing it. Right now.’

The video was only seen by a few dozen people on Twitch before it was removed by the platform, however it has since been viewed by over one million people on X.

Bushnell described himself on LinkedIn as an ‘aspiring software engineer’ with a ‘passion for solving complex problems with code’.

Highlighting his educational and work experience in software development and Linux system administration, Bushnell said he was looking to ‘transition out of the US Air Force into software engineering’.

He praised his military successes, claiming that he has been ‘commended by senior leaders for my ability to explain complex technical matters’.

‘Throughout my time in the military in both leadership and followership roles, as well as prior work experience in a variety of civilian roles, I have thrived in team environments and gained very good communication skills,’ he said.

Bushnell said he could bring those ‘skills to the table in any role’, but noted he was ‘truly passionate about writing software ‘and ‘can’t wait to help drive innovation in the civilian world’.

It is understood that the airman was pursuing his undergraduate degree in computer software engineering, however it is unclear where he was studying.

His biography states: ‘I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering from Western Governor’s University, and have taken several supplementary classes in software development outside of college.’

However, Bushnell’s educational history does not list the Utah based university and instead lists Southern New Hampshire University as his current place of study. His profile indicates he enrolled at the school in May 2022 and was expected to graduate in May 2025.

His LinkedIn profile also states he attended the University of Maryland Global Campus from January to November 2023.

Bushnell has reportedly been a member of the Air Force since May 2020, when he began basic training. His profile states that he ‘graduated top of flight and top of class’ in November that year.

He says he trained as a Client Systems Technician and had ‘hands-on experience in troubleshooting, building, and repairing computer information systems’. He also trained in cyber security, earning his CompTIA Security+ certification.

He was stationed in Texas in December 2020 and worked in IT infrastructure monitoring and oversight. He was promoted to DevOps engineer in March 2023.

Prior to his military service, Bushnell worked in IT and web development at Paraclete Press in Brewster, Massachusetts for two years. He helped supported the Christian publisher with IT functions and maintained its e-commerce website.

His mother Danielle is the Purchaser and Contracts Administrator at Paraclete Press. She has been ‘beyond blessed to be a part of carrying out the mission’ of the organization for ’27 years and counting’, the firm’s website states.

His father David is a carpenter and owns Bushnell Construction, according to his own LinkedIn profile. The business operates out of Orleans, Massachusetts where David and Danielle moved in 1994 with their two sons.

Bushnell and his brother Sean were both members of the percussion ensemble Spirit Winter Percussion – also based in Orleans. The brothers appeared to compete with the marching band and even earned silver medals at a contest in 2018.

The family also appears to have strong ties to their faith, with David even linking himself on Facebook to several religious organizations, including the Community of Jesus church in Orleans. The church was previously characterized by CBC Radio Canada as a ‘mysterious and abusive Christian cult’.

Bushnell also follows several religious Facebook pages. He also follows Ohio-based nonprofits that appear to promote anarchy and the Kent State University (KSU) Students for Justice in Palestine group. There is no obvious indication that Bushnell is directly connected to KSU.

A spokesperson for the US Air Force confirmed on Sunday that Bushnell is an active-duty airman.

A spokesperson from the Secret Service told DailyMail.com: ‘The US Secret Service, Uniformed Division responded to the 3400 Block of International Drive, NW, DC regarding an individual that was experiencing a possible medical / mental health emergency.’

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal was called to the scene on Sunday in reference to a suspicious vehicle that may be connected to the person.

The Israeli embassy released a statement after the incident, reading: ‘On Sunday, 2/25, at around 1 PM, a man set himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington and was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

‘No Embassy staff were injured and are safe.’

A similar incident occurred in December when a pro-Palestine protestor set themselves ablaze outside the Israeli consulate in Atlanta.

The city’s police chief, Darin Schierbaum, described the incident as an ‘extreme act of political protest,’ and said a Palestinian flag was recovered from the scene.

At least two people were injured in the act of self-immolation, including a security guard who attempted to intervene.

Bushnell’s protest came as the White House faces growing pressure over the four-and-a-half month old conflict which has claimed more than 30,000 lives.

Democrat ‘Squad’ member Rep Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and former Jewish Rep Andy Levin are among those who have endorsed the ‘Listen to Michigan’ campaign.

‘Biden’s blockade of the cease-fire resolution will only intensify the outrage and galvanize pro-peace voices to vote ‘uncommitted’ to make their voices heard,’ said campaign leader Joseph Geevarghese.

Dearborn’s Democrat Mayor Abdullah Hammoud warned this week Biden could no longer take the Arab vote for granted.

‘My greatest fear is that Mr Biden will not be remembered as the president who saved American democracy in 2020 but rather as the president who sacrificed it for Benjamin Netanyahu in 2024,’ he said.

The fin whale, the world's second-largest animal after the blue whale, now lives full-time in the waters around New York and New Jersey, according to a new study that tracked the ocean giants through their songs.

This endangered whale typically spends the summer in feeding grounds in the Arctic and Antarctic waters and migrates to the tropics to reproduce and give birth in the winter.

But some fin whales live year-round in the New York City area, according to new research from a team of scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society in The Bronx and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

The new research, combined with older data from this region, suggests these whales may have been living there for a decade or more.

Four years of audio recordings made from a buoy located about 40 miles off the coast of Long Island, New York, revealed that male fin whales remain in the area year-round.

The buoys captured singing whales every month of the study period.

Males are the only ones who sing, but since fin whales mate in winter, females are likely to be nearby when the males sing their winter songs. And while the females may migrate during the warmer months, at least some males seem to stick around, the scientists found.

The area where these whales live is known as the New York Bight, which extends outward in approximately a triangular shape east of Long Island, New York, and south of Cape May, New Jersey.

Fin whales grow to about 80 feet long from tip to tail, and as adults they weigh 40 to 80 tons — 80,000 to 160,000 pounds.

They can live 80 to 90 years, but they are threatened by climate change, entanglement in fishing gear, lack of prey due to overfishing, ocean noise such as radar tests, and being hit by ships.

“While they may not be seen as close to shore as other whales and dolphins, it is truly remarkable that the second largest animal to ever live on this earth can be found here year-round here in the New York Bight for our coasts is present,” the study said. co-author Howard Rosenbaum, director of the Wildlife Conservation Society's Ocean Giants Program, in a rack.

“Hopefully our efforts will lead to increased efforts and best practices to better protect these amazing, endangered animals in the NY Bight.”

The New York Bight fin whales tend to occupy this mapped area, but the traffic lanes (yellow dotted lines) of ships can pose a threat to whales, both from direct attacks and from the noise of their engines disrupting whale songs.

Females give birth every two to three years, after a gestation period of 11 to 11.5 months.

Scientists believe that fin whales are monogamous and form bonds between mating pairs.

Because there is almost a year between the time they mate and the time they give birth, their annual migrations bring them back to the same location for both events.

This likely means that calves are being born and adult whales are mating in the waters around New York and New Jersey.

The fin whale is a baleen whale, meaning it feeds on small fish and small marine invertebrates such as krill by filtering them through its huge comb-like baleen plates.

Currently, the fin whales that live in the northwest Atlantic Ocean — including in the New York Bight — are managed as a single population, but previous studies and the new study have identified multiple groups of whales, the authors wrote.

“More information is needed on the distribution and behavior of fin whales in the New York Bight to help inform how to protect this endangered species from the range of potential stressors and threats that occur year-round in these waters,” says co-author of the study. Mindi Rekdahl, associate marine conservation scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society, said in the statement.

The study was published in the magazine Scientific reports.

By analyzing recordings of whale song made from January 2017 through December 2020, scientists were able to track the whales' seasonal shifts.

“The New York Bight buoys play a critical role in protecting wildlife, like the fin whale, in one of the busiest waterways in the world,” said co-author Mark Baumgartner, a marine ecologist at Woods Hole. “The data collected allows industry, government and the public to know when whales are nearby.”

Fin whale songs tend to be repetitive, so the main characteristic that changes in them is called the 'inter-note interval' (INI), the amount of time between notes.

The scientists found that in most years the INI was shortest from September to December, meaning the whales were often calling.

This makes sense since that is their mating season.

Groups of fin whales live in the New York Bight all year round. Females may migrate to colder waters to teach their calves how to feed in the summer, but at least some males remain in the waters around New York and New Jersey year-round.

In the spring, from March to April, the INIs became longer.

“Since the songs followed predictable seasonal shifts from short INIs to long INIs and had a distinct INI pattern within each season, a single song pattern was present in the NYB during these years,” the researchers wrote.

In other words, whale songs followed a clear seasonal pattern each year.

Remarkably, this pattern was the same as previous researchers had tracked in the region a decade ago.

However, they discovered that one year did not follow the pattern: 2019.

This year there was no short INI period in autumn and winter.

This may reflect a year in which a shift in reproductive behavior occurred, the authors wrote.

'Instead, fin whales may have continued to forage mainly in the sea [New York Bight]while reproductive fin whales may have used another region for breeding activities,” they wrote.

DailyMail.com has created a map of the top 10 whale watching locations according to the Wildlife Conservation Society and the New York Aquarium.

When fin whales feed, seabirds tend to flock to the site, relying on the whales to spot schools of fish that they can swoop in and exploit.

You may be able to catch a glimpse of a fin whale from the shore, but the best way to spy these animals is by going out on a boat.

The list of locations was published in 2019 but is “still relevant today,” co-author Carissa King Nolan, assistant marine conservation scientist at the Wildlife Conservation Society, told DailyMail.com.

“From those locations, people would most likely see humpback or bottlenose dolphins,” she said. “Fin whales are generally found further from shore, so someone is less likely to see a fin whale in one of those places.”

However, it doesn't hurt to try.

A doctor has warned of three ways using your phone is 'killing your brain' and what you should do if you 'don't want to live a stressful life'.

Stress expert Dr. Harvard's Aditi Nerurkar, from Boston, Massachusetts, explained the negative effects our cell phones have on our brains while speaking with podcast host Steven Bartlett on an episode of his show, The Diary of a CEO.

She explained that excessive use of high-brightness phone screens and exposure to graphic content can contribute to stress, anxiety and depression.

The doctor also stressed that creating 'digital boundaries' with our phones is 'essential for our mental health and wellbeing'.

Here, FEMAIL reveals the three phone habits Dr. Nerurkar mentioned that are negatively impacting our daily lives.

Dr. Aditi Nerurkar, from Boston, Massachusetts, warned of three ways using your phone is “killing your brain” and what to do if you “don't want to live a stressful life”

Night scrolling

The specialist discussed how constant cell phone use can negatively impact mental health through a phenomenon known as “popcorn brain.”

This happens when the user has difficulty disconnecting from the continuous stream of online information.

She claimed that our desire to scroll on our phones is a “primal urge” to look for danger, which stems from a feeling of stress.

She explained: 'There has been a lot of bad news lately. In fact, it feels like the onslaught of bad news, one after another, whether it's a climate disaster or a conflict in some part of the world or something else, is happening all the time now.

'The flow of information is fast and unprecedented, which is why we are constantly scrolling and scanning for danger.

'When we were all cave people, there was a night watchman. That person sat by the fire while the tribe slept and that person scanned for danger to keep the tribe safe.

'In modern times, we have all become that night watchman and scroll incessantly when we feel a sense of stress because it is our primal urge.

'It's our amygdala's way (parts of the brain responsible for processing emotional stimuli) to sense a sense of security because we're looking for danger.

'But we are no longer part of a tribe, we are no longer cave people. So what do we do? We scroll, that's how we look for danger, especially when we feel stressed.'

Check your phone regularly

Dr. Nerurkar urged people to stop checking their phones immediately after waking up as this leads to increased stress and dependence on mobile phones, making stress even worse.

She said: 'Most of us check our phones 2,600 times a day, that's a statistic… When you wake up, before your second eye is even open, you're scrolling.

'Research shows that 62 percent of people check their phone within 15 minutes of waking up and about 50 percent in the middle of the night. “I am guilty of this,” she said.

Dr. Nerurkar recommends limiting your phone use to 20 minutes per day, “and setting a timer for interaction and consumption if necessary.”

Consuming traumatic content

The doctor said consuming traumatic content on social media can lead to emotional distress, PTSD and indirect trauma, especially for those who work in journalism.

She explained: 'Graphics and videos on your phone can increase the risk of PTSD and mental health problems because they trigger the fight or flight response and can lead to indirect trauma.

'Research shows that your risk of PTSD increases when you consume graphic images, even if what you're consuming is happening thousands of miles away, like in any conflict, any climate disaster, whatever.

“If you start consuming graphic images and videos, you increase your risk of PTSD, even if you haven't had direct trauma, because it's indirect trauma you're seeing.

“And so it's a cycle. The more videos you consume or the more graphic content you consume, your amygdala gets activated, your primal urge to scroll starts to go haywire, and then you scroll some more, and then you scroll some more, because you you don't feel safe. This is a common phenomenon.'

As product placement goes, it doesn’t get much better than the Super Bowl.

A communal TV experience shared across all 50 American states and beyond, this year’s event  – won by Kansas City Chiefs for the third time in five years – drew in an average 114 million viewers across the globe.

No surprise, given NFL games have made up an impressive 93 of the top 100 broadcast programs across the United States over the last year.

That kind of attention brings in big money, big brands and even bigger celebrities – as every commercial break that interspersed the Chiefs’ victory over San Francisco 49ers illustrated.

Indeed, companies have forked out close to $7 million a piece for a 30-second spot in the hope of capitalizing on the commercial buzz with a series of high-profile celebrity endorsements.

Only a Super Bowl could encourage Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez to flog donuts, Sir Anthony Hopkins to play a football mascot and the classically trained Patrick Stewart climbing a ‘mountain of entertainment.’

But who else featured during Sunday night’s extravaganza? Here is a roundup of this year’s standouts.

DUNKIN’ DONUTS

Dunkin Donuts has finally unveiled their full Super Bowl ad featuring Ben Affleck trying to start his pop music career in a rather hilarious fashion.

After numerous teases over the past week featuring influencer Charli D’Amelio, Dunkin Donuts has released their full Super Bowl spot during the first half of the big game.

The earlier teases showed the 51-year-old actor and filmmaker trying to break into the music biz, though the full ad revealed who was helping him along the way, including his childhood friend Matt Damon.

The ad spawned mixed reactions from fans on social media, with some calling it the best of the night and some calling it ‘cringe’ during the game, which the Kansas City Chiefs won 25-22 over the favorited San Francisco 49ers in overtime.

The ad begins with Lopez, 54, in a recording studio, with a bejeweled custom Dunkin’ cup at her side, while Jack Harlow tries to talk Affleck out of it.

‘I don’t think you should do this,’ Harlow says, though Affleck explains why he has to do this.

‘Last year she came to my work. Now I’ve gotta show her what I can do,’ Affleck insists, while, inside the studio, JLo is told that Affleck is here… which she’s not happy about.

Beyoncé surprised fans by teasing forthcoming new music as she stunned in a Verizon Super Bowl ad — for which she reportedly received a $30million payout — on Sunday.

The 42-year-old icon — who attended the big game alongside other notable stars — moved through various personas in the minute-long commercial, attempting to ‘break the internet’ with over-the-top performances.

It comes after days earlier the phone company teased the singer’s appearance in the advert with two brief bits shared on social media.

In one clip, actor Tony Hale squeezed lemons behind a lemonade stand and said: ‘Hold up, she wants me to squeeze all these lemons by myself? This better work.’

The clue was a reference to the pop star’s 2016 surprise Lemonade visual album.

And just like she did in eight years ago, the Grammy-winning musician blew fans away on Sunday as she dropped two new singles.

Beyonce ’16 Carriages’ full lyrics

[Chorus]

Sixteen carriages drivin’ away

While I watch them ride with my dreams away

To the summer sunset on a holy night

On a long back road, all the tears I fight

Sixteen carriages drivin’ away

While I watch them ride with my dreams away

To the summer sunset on a holy night

On a long back road, all the tears I fight

[Verse 1]

I saw Mama prayin’, I saw Daddy grind

All my tender problems, had to leave behind

[Pre-Chorus]

On the back of the bus and a bunk with the band

Goin’ so hard, gotta choose myself

Underpaid and overwhelmed

Still workin’ on my life, you know

Only God knows, only God knows

Only God knows

[Chorus]

Sixteen carriages drivin’ away

While I watch them ride with my fears away

To the summer sunset on a holy night

On a long back road, all the tears I fight

Sixteen carriages drivin’ away

While I watch them ride with my fears away

To the summer sunset on a holy night

On a long back road, all the tears I fight

[Verse 2]

Sixteen dollars, workin’ all day

Ain’t got time to waste, I got art to make

I got love to create on this holy night

They won’t dim my light, all these years I fight

[Pre-Chorus]

It’s been thirty-eight summers, and I’m not in my bed

On the back of the bus and a bunk with the band

Overworked and overwhelmed

I might cook, clean, but still won’t fold

Still workin’ on my life, you know

Only God knows, only God knows

Only God knows

[Chorus]

Sixteen carriages driving away

While I watch them ride with my fears away

To the summer sunset on a holy night

On a long back road, all the tears I fight

Sixteen carriages driving away

While I watch them ride with my fears away

To the summer sunset on a holy night

On a long back road, all these tears I fight

[Interlude]

Oh, oh

Oh

[Bridge]

At fifteen, the innocence was gone astray

Had to take care of home at an early age

Had to sacrifice and leave my fears behind

You’ll remember me ’cause we got somethin’ to prove

In your memory, on a highway to truth

Still see your faces when you close your eyes

[Outro]

Sixteen carriages drivin’ away

While I watch them ride with my dreams away

As she announced an upcoming album, a country-genre follow-up to 2022’s Renaissance, she also released two new singles in tandem.

Along with the music came breathtaking artwork, which included a very scantily clad Beyoncé, who posed pantless.

In one snapshot, she put on a very busty display as she wore a silver hardware bra underneath a cropped black blazer.

The caption to her 319 million followers, she wrote, ‘TEXAS HOLD ‘EM and 16 CARRIAGES out now.’

The 16 CARRIAGES artwork was a closeup black and white image of Beyoncé — full name Beyoncé Knowles Carter — in a black cowboy hat.

She rocked a voluminous and wispy bob haircut underneath the headgear.

David and Victoria Beckham have been praised by Super Bowl viewers for their hilarious commercial for Uber Eats.

The former footballer, 48, and his fashion designer wife, 49, were called the ‘best part’ of the night, with several fans saying they were ‘still laughing’ over the hysterical advert.

The star-studded commercial plays on the premise that to remember what Uber Eats delivers you have to forget something else and ‘make a little room in your brain.’

It also features appearances from Friends stars Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer, rapper Jelly Roll and singer Usher.

The ad sees people forgetting important details, like Jennifer not remembering who David is or Jelly Roll forgetting he has face tattoos.

One scene shows the Beckhams in their kitchen, with David saying to former Spice Girl Victoria: ‘Remember when you used to be a Pepper Lady?’

Victoria, who is hilariously wearing a T-shirt that reads ‘David’s wife’ responds: ‘Wasn’t it the Cinnamon Sisters?’

David then suggests: ‘Basil Babes?’ while Victoria guesses: ‘Paprika Girls’ leading David to scoff: ‘No that’s absurd.’

The funny clip was praised on social media, with one person gushing: ‘My favorite couple Victoria and David Beckham on the #SuperBowl ads. Truly keeps giving!’

State Farm debuted its highly-anticipated new Super Bowl commercial, reuniting  Arnold Schwarzenegger with his Twins and Junior co-star Danny DeVito.

Off the top of the hilarious advert, a man comes running out of a burning home with two puppies in hand seconds before a fiery explosion.

Once the smoke and fire clear it becomes apparent that it’s the Terminator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who’s the hero, as he hands a mother of two the two dogs.

‘Thank you Agent State Farm,’ the women tells the former California governor, who’s dressed in the insurance company’s trademark red shirt and tan khakis.

‘Like a good neighbaaa State Farm is there,’ he shoots back, in a classic mispronunciation of the word neighbor, which the director tries to correct after one take amid a movie-like set.

‘Hey Arnold, I’m hearing neighba. It’s neighbor,’ he tells the actor, who responds by saying, ‘That’s what I said neighba.’

The two proceed to go back and forth about how to pronounce the world neighbor.

Frustrated by his lack of being able to properly pronounce the word the director announces, ‘Let’s go again.’

The shoot picks back up with Schwarzenegger piloting a stationary helicopter in a CGI sequence where he again drops the company’s trademark line: ‘Like a good neighbaaa State Farm is there.’

And once again, the two have the same problem, forcing the director to yell ‘cut’.

‘Now what,’ the longtime Hollywood leading man yells out to the director.

‘It’s neighbor,’ he tells the Twins actor, who screams out: ‘Neighbaaa.’

Enter actor Kevin Miles, best known as Jake From State Farm, who proceeds to try and educate Schwarzenegger on the proper way to say ‘neighbor’.

‘Yea, neighbaaa, just like it’s written on the papaaa,’ he tells Jake while holding the script for the production.

Eventually, during the world premiere of ‘Agent State Farm’ a new clip is shown on the large movie screen, only Danny DeVito has now joined the cast, as part of the director’s script change.

The two try to do the trademark line together, only Arnold pauses to hear how his Twins co-star does a perfect take.

‘Like a good neighbor State Farm is there,’ De Vito says perfectly, prompting a nod of frustration from his co-star.

In the last scene, the two actors are seen sitting together in the theater seats when Schwarzenegger turns to him and says: ‘You are a backstabbaaa,’ for which DeVito corrects him one last time: ‘I am a backstabber.’

SQUARESPACE

Squarespace called on Martin Scorsese and his daughter Francesca for their Super Bowl spot.

The ad plays heavily on their 57-year age gap, with the famed director telling his daughter he’s trying to make a ‘really, really short film. Like 30 seconds’ about a website.

This prompts Francesca to teach her father how websites work, starting with domains, before pulling up the website-building platform.

The filmmaker criticizes Francesca’s choice of fonts before they settle on one that earns his approval.

‘This website slaps, kid, doesn’t it?’ Scorsese wisecracks, much to the embarrassment of his daughter.

‘I really regret ever teaching you that,’ she says.

‘It’s time to pump yourself up baby,’ Cari B declared in her new and controversial commercial that aired during the Super Bowl LVIII broadcast from Las Vegas.

A 30-second spot for NYX Cosmetics was approved by NFL representatives, but it turns out the second half of the original 60-second spot was deemed to be NSFW (not safe for work).

The rapper, 31, showcased her womanly curves in a skin-tight bright orange bodysuit as she advertised the company’s Duck Plump Lip Gloss.

While dancing on stage with an array of colorful characters, the Shake It starlet could be heard seductively purring like a kitty just before she demanded: ‘Be bigger. So big. Plumper,’ which led to her to tell her audience to ‘feel the plumping power.’

‘New Duck Plump Lip Gloss from NYX Professional Makeup,’ she announced at the end of the segment.

It turns out before airing during the Super Bowl the original commercial was cut down to 30-seconds due to its sexual connotations.

As a result, the second half of the spot, the last 15 seconds, fades to black and then shows a QR code directing viewers to watch the unedited, 60 second version that’s now being shared across across NYX Professional Makeup’s YouTube and social channels, according to Billboard.

The uncut version was released on the internet ahead of the kickoff for the big game, garnering more than two million views on YouTube by press time.

Pink sent the crowd wild when she brought both her children on stage on the first night of her Australian tour on Friday.

The American singer, 44, has taken her epic Summer Carnival tour Down Under for a series of shows across the country and kicked off in style for her first show.

It was a very eventful first show at Sydney's Allianz Stadium, as Pink had to briefly interrupt the concert when a fan went into labor and was wheeled out by doctors.

Pink also shared some sweet moments with her own children Willow, 12, and Jameson, seven, who she shares with her husband Carey Hart, during the sold-out performance.

The global megastar, whose real name is Alecia Beth Moore, brought her daughter Willow on stage for the duet Cover Me In Sunshine.

Willow follows in her mother's singer footsteps as she wowed the audience with her talents as she confidently sang the lyrics to the song.

Videos from the concert showed Pink appearing emotional as she stood to the side of the stage and watched, with her daughter taking center stage during the song.

Pink was every bit the proud mother as she beamed from ear to ear as she watched Willow sing effortlessly to the impressed audience, who cheered her on.

The mother and daughter shared a tight hug on stage after their duet as Pink doted on the youngster.

Fans took to social media to praise the 'talented' Willow, who previously performed on stage with Pink on the very first night of her Summer Carnival tour in June.

One gushed: 'Willow you are so talented. I'm a fan!'

“She's so effortless. Always such great work. Her parents have every reason to be just as proud of both their babies,” another added.

Someone said: 'Proud mum, Willow has a beautiful voice and everyone in the audience loved this duet tonight. Great show as always.'

“I love how Alecia looks at her daughter Willow! Such a proud, loving mama bear;” “She's so effortless.”

Elsewhere during the show, Pink also brought along her son Jameson for his stage debut in an adorable moment.

The youngster was briefly seen running onto the stage after Pink was given a chocolate bar, but sweetly decided to hand it to her son.

Jameson jogged outside to greet his mother and waved briefly to the crowd before heading back into the crowd to rejoin his family.

As the crowd cheered, Pink said, “He got my shyness!”

“I had one chance to eat a whole piece of candy and gave it to my child,” she added jokingly.

Pink had a very eventful first night of her Australian tour, as she also had to stop the concert briefly when a fan went into labor.

After seeing a pregnant woman being wheeled out of her concert by a doctor, the So What hitmaker paused midway through her performance of Our Song to see what was going on.

When she discovered the concertgoer was having contractions, the mother of two excitedly tried to find out the baby's gender.

After the first night of her Australian tour, Pink took to Instagram to share photos from the concert and discuss her favorite moments, including doing stunts in the pouring rain.

'Is it Alicia or Alex who is born? she asked, referring to her own birth name, from the stage.

Pink, who admitted she didn't feel like they had to “watch” anymore, urged the crowd to give the woman some “privacy.”

'Wow, Our Song, that was the one that did it. I wouldn't have called them! “I thought it was going to be Get The Party Started or “Never Not Gonna Dance Again,” she said.

'That is exciting. I don't even know what to say. But we have to sing now. Good luck! It will be great! You're going to do great,” she shouted.

This isn't the first time a fan has gone into labor at one of her shows, as in August, a fan named Angela Mercer went into labor during her concert at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, and later welcomed a son.

After the first night of her Australian tour, Pink took to Instagram to share a gallery of photos from the concert and show off her favorite moments.

She shared a series of photos and videos of herself flying over the crowd in a harness in one of her famous death-defying stunts, despite the fact that it was raining heavily and she refused to be deterred.

Pink also posted two photos of her husband Carey and their children Willow and Jameson, fast asleep backstage as they all rested after the packed show.

'We helped bring a baby into the world, we found a new favorite candy bar. Jamo made his debut and I outlived my entire family.

'The crowd also flashed on the way back to the dressing room. Accidentally. I think. I'm so happy to be here!!!!!'

The global star will travel the country for a series of shows on her Australian tour before ending in Queensland on March 23.

Pink was born and raised in the United States but has become an 'honorary Australia' after breaking records for concert and album sales Down Under.

According to a report in New idea Pink hopes to start a 'new chapter' in Australia with her family last year and is considering setting up a 'base' Down Under.

She has long considered Australia a second home and said she was “exploring” possible citizenship in February 2023.

“Last year I was thinking about applying for citizenship, I'm not even kidding,” she said on 60 Minutes.

Pink added that she told her husband Carey Hart that they had to move with their children Willow, 12, and Jameson, seven.

“I was like, if we're going somewhere, Carey, that's where we're going. So I was kind of looking for it,” she added.
