The Princess of Wales today revealed she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy following her shock cancer diagnosis.

Chemotherapy uses powerful drugs to attack tumors and is typically given to directly treat cancer or shrink a tumor in preparation for surgery.

As in the case of Kate Middleton, chemo can also be used as a preventive option in the hope of preventing the return of cancer.

Today, Kate, 42, said in a statement that she has undergone this preventive form of chemotherapy. She started treatment at the end of February.

At the time, it was believed that the reason for Kate’s surgery was not cancer.

Today she said subsequent tests showed it was cancerous.

Kate was then advised to undergo preventive chemotherapy and described herself as being in the ‘early stages’ of that treatment.

Preventive chemotherapy, also called adjuvant chemotherapy, aims to prevent cancer from returning once the main tumor has been removed from the body.

Cancer can spread to other parts of the body, a process called metastasis, in which small cancer cells break off the main tumor and take root elsewhere.

These “new” cancers can be difficult to detect, so doctors who specialize in treating cancer, called oncologists, often advise patients to undergo preventive chemotherapy in an attempt to eliminate any remaining traces of the disease.

Preventive chemotherapy is usually administered as an infusion or tablets, where they are then carried throughout the body by the bloodstream.

Depending on the type, chemotherapy can be administered in a hospital or at the patient’s home.

There are more than 100 types of chemotherapy drugs, but they all work in a similar way and circulate through the blood.

The drugs are cytotoxic, meaning they are toxic to cells and especially to cells that are dividing rapidly.

Because cancer cells divide more than healthy cells, they are more affected by chemotherapy, which is why it is used as a treatment for the disease.

However, other types of fast-growing cells, such as hair, bone marrow, skin and the lining of the digestive system, are also damaged.

This leads to some of the famous side effects of chemotherapy, such as hair loss or thinning, fatigue, easier bruising and bleeding, an increased risk of infection, diarrhea or constipation, nausea or vomiting, rash, and more.

Often a patient undergoing chemotherapy is also taking other medications intended to alleviate or combat some of these symptoms.

The specific dosage and type of chemotherapy used varies depending on the type of cancer.

The effectiveness of preventive chemotherapy varies considerably from patient to patient.

Factors that influence its success include the specific type of cancer, when the cancer was originally treated, the patient’s age, and whether he or she has any other health problems.

The specific type of cancer Kate has has not been revealed.

Around 375,000 cases of cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year, with 167,000 patients dying from the disease each year.

Survival rates vary considerably by type of cancer. In total, 50 percent of cancer patients will still be alive ten years after their diagnosis.

Kate’s battle with cancer in her own words: Full emotional video statement from the Princess of Wales

I wanted to take this opportunity to personally thank you for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding while I was recovering from surgery.

It’s been an incredibly tough few months for our whole family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.

In January I had major abdominal surgery in London and at the time my condition was deemed to be non-cancerous. The operation was successful. However, tests after the surgery revealed that cancer was present. My medical team therefore recommended that I undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.

This obviously came as a huge shock, and William and I have done everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.

As you can imagine, this has taken time. It took me time to recover from major surgery before I could start my treatment. But the most important thing is that it took us time to explain everything

George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that suits them, and to reassure them that I will be fine.

As I told them; I am doing well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirit.

Having William by my side is also a great source of comfort and reassurance. As does the love, support and kindness shown by so many of you. It means so much to both of us.

We hope you understand that we as a family now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.

At this time I also think of all those whose lives have been touched by cancer. To anyone facing this disease in any form, please do not lose faith and hope. You are not alone.

In his videoDavid Domoney (@daviddomoney) explained how beautifying your garden can actually repel snails.

The TikToker told his followers that while seedling plants are at their most vulnerable in early spring, so are the pests that feed on them.

To keep slugs and snails out of your flower beds, David suggested creating habitats in your garden.

This means that more animals are encouraged into your space and a new ecosystem is created.

Encouraging creatures such as birds and squirrels into your garden will reduce the number of slugs that nibble on your plants.

The green-fingered expert recommended creating environments for the slug predators.

He gave examples of hanging bird feeders, but also of planting shrubs and hedges.

David also advised his viewers to add a small pond to their gardens.

My garden was a mess – the first change was free and our fence makeover cost a pound, it’s so much better already

According to the experts at MilorganiteCreatures that live in and around ponds are common predators of slugs.

“Toads and frogs make great garden partners, they eat many insects including mosquitoes, slugs and snails,” they said.

And if you don’t have room for a pond in your yard, the pros suggested creating a rock pile to attract frogs instead.

Simple gardening tips to save money, maximize space and repel pests

  1. Banana peels, vinegar and coffee grounds are often recommended as natural fertilizers.
  2. Dollar Tree sells four packets of seeds for $1.25.
  3. Try a vertical planter like the one from Amazon Mr. Stacky stackable planter with 5 levels$35 to make more use of a small space.
  4. Use nets such as the Garden Net Pest Barrier$8, from Amazon to keep away bugs from eating your veggies.
  5. Try sacrificial planting to reduce pesticide use and keep pests out of your garden. By deliberately growing certain plants to attract agricultural pests, you can keep them away from the plants you want to protect. Examples include marigolds, lavender, catnip and chives.
  6. For annoying weeds in your garden, the Grampa’s Weeder – The original upright weed puller tool with long handles$45, from Amazon is a handy tool that you can use without having to bend over.

For best results, place your rock pile in a spot in your yard that receives equal amounts of sun and shade throughout the day.

David, who opts for natural pest control solutions, also recommended forming leaf piles in your garden.

This step can help provide additional habitat and reduce the slug population in your garden.

Dario Amodei, CEO of the high-profile AI startup Anthropic, told Congress last year that new AI technology could soon help unskilled but evil people create large-scale biological attackssuch as the release of viruses or toxins that cause widespread illness and death.

Senators from both parties were alarmed, while AI researchers in industry and academia debated the severity of the threat.

Now more than 90 biologists and other scientists specializing in AI technologies used to design new proteins – the microscopic mechanisms that drive all creation in biology – have signed an agreement that wants to ensure that their AI-enabled research will progress without exposing the world to serious harm.

The biologists, including Nobel laureate Frances Arnold and labs in the United States and other countries, also argued that the latest technologies would have far more benefits than harm, including new vaccines and drugs.

“As scientists engage in this work, we believe that the benefits of current AI technologies for protein design far outweigh the potential harms, and we are eager to ensure that our research continues to benefit everyone,” the agreement said.

The agreement does not aim to suppress the development or distribution of AI technologies. Instead, the biologists want to regulate the use of equipment needed to produce new genetic material.

This DNA production equipment is ultimately what makes bioweapons development possible, said David Baker, director of the Institute for Protein Design at the University of Washington, who helped broker the deal.

“Protein design is just the first step in making synthetic proteins,” he said in an interview. “You then have to actually synthesize DNA and move the design from the computer into the real world – and that is the right place to regulate.”

The agreement is one of many efforts to weigh the risks of AI against its potential benefits. While some experts warn that AI technologies could help spread disinformation, replace jobs at an unusual rate and perhaps even destroy humanity, tech companies, academic labs, regulators and regulators are struggling to understand these risks and find ways to mitigate them. to deal with.

Dr.’s company Amodei, Anthropic, is building large language models, or LLMs, the new breed of technology that powers online chatbots. Testifying before Congress, he argued that the technology could soon help attackers build new bioweapons.

But he acknowledged that this was not possible today. Anthropic recently had one detailed study proving that if someone is trying to acquire or design biological weapons, LLMs are marginally more useful than a regular internet search engine.

Dr. Amodei and others worry that as companies improve LLMs and combine them with other technologies, a serious threat will emerge. He told Congress that this would only take another two to three years.

OpenAI, maker of the online chatbot ChatGPT, later conducted a similar study that found LLMs were not significantly more dangerous than search engines. Aleksander Mądry, a professor of computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and head of preparedness at OpenAI, said he expected researchers would continue to improve these systems, but that he had not yet seen any evidence that they could create new bioweapons. .

Today’s LLMs are created by analyzing vast amounts of digital text pulled from the Internet. This means they regurgitate or recombine what is already available online, including existing information about biological attacks. (The New York Times has taken OpenAI and its partner Microsoft to court, accusing them of copyright infringement in the process.)

But in an effort to accelerate the development of new drugs, vaccines and other useful biological materials, researchers are beginning to build similar AI systems that can generate new protein designs. Biologists say such technology could also help attackers design biological weapons, but they point out that actually building the weapons would require a multimillion-dollar laboratory, including DNA production equipment.

“There is a risk that doesn’t require millions of dollars in infrastructure, but those risks have been around for a while and are not related to AI,” said Andrew White, co-founder of the nonprofit Future House and one of the biologists. who signed the agreement.

The biologists called for the development of safeguards that would prevent DNA production equipment from being used with harmful materials – although it is unclear how those measures would work. They also called for safety and security assessments of new AI models before they are released.

They did not argue that the technologies should be bottled.

“These technologies should not only be in the hands of a small number of people or organizations,” said Rama Ranganathan, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of Chicago, who also signed the agreement. “The community of scientists should be able to explore and contribute to these freely.”

A New York judge on Thursday effectively barred former President Donald J. Trump from revealing the identities of potential jurors during his first criminal trial later this month, stressing the need to protect those who could decide the highly sensitive case .

The judge presiding over the trial, Juan M. Merchan, granted a request from the Manhattan district attorney’s office to withhold the names of jurors from the public. The judge also ordered that their addresses be hidden from everyone except the lawyers in the case.

Trump’s legal team, which is defending the former president against charges of covering up a possible sex scandal during the 2016 election, agreed it was appropriate to keep the jury information private.

A lawyer for Mr. Trump, Todd Blanche, declined to comment Thursday.

New York State does not allow juries to operate in complete anonymity, meaning defendants are allowed to know the names of the jurors. However, Judge Merchan sought to shield the names of the jurors in Trump’s trial from the broader public, underscoring the potential harm in a case involving a polarizing figure like the former president who could whip his supporters into a frenzy.

The restrictions and concerns about juror safety reflect the volatile environment surrounding Trump’s legal entanglements, including four criminal cases and several civil trials. After Mr. Trump recently lost a civil fraud case in New York brought by the state’s attorney general, envelopes containing white powder were sent to both the attorney general’s office and the judge who had overseen the case. The judge was also the victim of a hoax bomb threat on the day of closing arguments.

Jury selection in the criminal trial against Mr Trump is scheduled for March 25, making it the first prosecution of a former US president. He is accused of a series of crimes stemming from a hush-money payment to a porn star during the 2016 presidential campaign — a payout that Trump allegedly concealed from voters.

For now, it is unclear what punishment Trump faces if he violates the order preventing him from revealing the identities of jurors. The district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, had sought to revoke Trump’s access to jurors’ names if he endangered their safety, but the judge postponed ruling on that request.

Instead, Judge Merchan suggested he would address any potential penalties for Mr. Trump if he were to rule on another request from Mr. Bragg — that the former president be subject to a silence order.

If the judge approves, the order would bar Trump from “making statements or directing others” to make statements about witnesses about their role in the case. Mr. Bragg also asked that Mr. Trump not comment on the case to prosecutors, with the exception of Mr. Bragg himself, and to members of the court staff.

It would be just the latest gag order imposed on the former president. In Trump’s criminal case in Washington, which accuses him of plotting to overturn the 2020 election, a judge has imposed such an order. And the judge in the civil fraud trial, Arthur F. Engoron, ordered Mr. Trump not to comment on court personnel.

Mr. Trump has railed against the justices, and his campaign has called Mr. Bragg’s request for a gag order “an unconstitutional infringement of President Trump’s First Amendment rights.”

Yet judges generally do their utmost to protect witnesses and especially jurors.

After a federal jury returned a verdict against Mr. Trump in a recent defamation trial, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered the jury not to reveal the identities of the other jurors and strongly encouraged them to remain anonymous forever . In the federal system, jurors are allowed to remain anonymous, even from parties to the case.

“My advice to you is that you never reveal that you were on this jury,” Judge Kaplan said. “And I won’t say more about it.”

William K. Rashbaum reporting contributed.

South Africa has asked the United Nations’ highest court to issue emergency orders to Israel to end what it called the “genocidal starvation” of the Palestinian people, citing UN warnings that Gaza risks was under threat of famine.

The request made Wednesday to the International Court of Justice in The Hague was part of a case filed by South Africa in December accusing Israel of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. Israel has strongly denied the accusation of genocide and on Thursday the Foreign Ministry called on the court to reject South Africa’s latest request.

“South Africa continues to act as the legal arm of Hamas in an attempt to undermine Israel’s inherent right to defend itself and its citizens and to release all hostages,” said Lior Haiat, a spokesman for Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. said on social media.

It was not immediately clear when the court would respond to the request. In January, in an initial ruling in the broader genocide case, the court ordered Israel to act to prevent its forces from committing genocide in Gaza and to increase the amount of humanitarian aid reaching the territory’s citizens.

Last month, South Africa asked the court to issue an emergency injunction to stop Israel from sending troops to the southern Gaza city of Rafah. The court did not do this, but said Israel must adhere to its original order to prevent genocide.

The judges of the World Court, as it is also known, have not ruled on the core question of whether a genocide is taking place in Gaza, a complex charge that will likely take them months or years to decide. For now, they have ordered a series of measures, amounting to temporary orders, aimed at protecting Palestinian civilians, as they found the dangers of genocide “plausible.”

The genocide case has thrust the usually slow-moving court into the global spotlight, turning it into a platform for tense arguments and disputes over Israel’s war in Gaza. Despite the symbolic weight of the charges before it, the court, which settles disputes between UN member states, does not have any means to force Israel to follow its orders.

In its request on Wednesday, South Africa accused Israel of causing widespread hunger and near-famine throughout Gaza. Health authorities there say children are dying every day from malnutrition and dehydration, and aid groups say people are hungry enough to resort to food leaves, donkey food and food scraps.

“Palestinian children are dying of hunger as a direct result of Israel’s deliberate acts and omissions – in violation of the Genocide Convention and the court’s order,” lawyers for South Africa wrote in the filing.

For months, international observers and aid agencies have warned that Gaza’s 2.2 million citizens are facing famine, amid acute shortages of food and water. Distributing limited supplies within the territory has become more challenging, amid the destruction of infrastructure and increasing lawlessness as desperate people loot aid convoys.

In asking the court to intervene, South Africa pointed to last week’s deadly aid delivery in northern Gaza and Israel’s attempts to block UNRWA, the main UN agency providing aid to Palestinians. refugees, to discredit. South Africa said the humanitarian situation in Gaza had deteriorated rapidly in the weeks since the court refused to issue an emergency order to stop a possible Israeli advance on Rafah. At the time, the court said the “dangerous situation” throughout Gaza required Israel to comply with its order to prevent genocide.

“The situation that was ‘dangerous’ then is now so terrifying as to be unspeakable,” South Africa said in the dossier.

Adam Sella reporting contributed.

She also urged viewers to add a ‘living mulch’ to their garden plans.

It reduces workload and adds nutrients to the soil.

From soil to stove (@fromsoiltostove) has a passion for growing vegetables in raised beds in the backyard.

She feeds her young family with fresh produce from her garden.

In this aftershe encouraged existing and future gardeners to consider a change in their growing habits.

“If you buy seeds for a vegetable garden this year, don’t forget to include these three,” she said.

“These are three essential seeds for your vegetable garden.”

They are unusual choices, but they worked well for her.

“I have a few ideas for seeds that you wouldn’t necessarily think of buying for your backyard vegetable garden that work wonders,” she added.

FLOWERING HERBS

Anyone with a creepy crawly phobia will like this one.

“Plant these sporadically in the garden or even in large bags,” she said.

“Not only will it attract beneficial insects, but it will also deter some pesky insects and keep them away from your plants,” she added.

Flowering herbs include:

  • Thyme
  • Dill
  • Fennel
  • Coriander
  • Basil

Plant cowpeas at the edge of your garden, a few feet away from your tomato plants, she advised.

“There is a chemical compound in peas that is similar to that of tomatoes,” she said.

“So the bugs and insects that like tomatoes are also attracted to the chickpeas and will usually congregate on those things, away from our beautiful tomato plants.”

LIVING MULCHES

A living mulch is very effective at keeping weeds down, but it also looks very nice.

“Living mulches are low-growing flowering plants that you place around your vegetables,” she said.

“Not only do they help retain moisture, but they also help control weeds, such as perennial weeds and other weeds that grow in and around your vegetables.

“It reduces garden work and retains moisture in the soil,” she added.

Living mulch plants:

  • Dear Alyssum
  • Small gemstone marigolds
  • Creeping Thyme

The commenters were grateful for the gardening tips.

“I needed this. I lost 100% of my Brussels harvest to slugs,” said one fan.

“I planted one marigold for every vegetable plant I put in the ground last year and had almost no pest problems,” said another.

“Cowpeas are also a great way to add nitrogen to your soil,” said a fellow gardener.

“Taking notes. I’m going to try all these things this year,” another added.

“Top tip: cook your sausages on bread,” he captioned a photo of him doing just that TikTok page.

“Fried bread with sausage (and they don’t stick!),” he added, showing off the crispy bread once it was done.

People were quick to comment on the TikTok post, with one writing: “Tbf if this works you’re a genius!”

“I do it with a chicken Kiev on bread and it makes a garlic fried bread,” added another.

“This is basically the same as ‘bread and drippings’ that you would have eaten during the war if you didn’t have meat,” wrote a third.

“Or better yet, just cook your sausages and then fry your bread with the fat that remains,” someone else argued.

To which another replied: “Why would you do that when you could do this?

“Faster and less hassle!”

“A little gravy and you’re done!” someone else was enthusiastic.

But others were unimpressed by Neil’s suggestion to cook sausage.

“Dirty,” one person called it, while another added: “Yes, I’m sure 20+ minutes of cooked toast with sausage juice is delicious…!”

“That is the most disturbing thing I have ever seen,” someone else dramatically commented.

“Bread soaked in animal fat,” mused another.

“Top tip…please don’t do this,” someone else wrote.

“I’m going to call the police!”

“Sausages should be cooked in the oven with onion, tomato and black pepper,” another commented.

“You’ll never want them any other way again!”

“That is ridiculous!” someone else raged.

It can also be difficult to clean an air fryer when you no longer use it.

And home appliance brand Ninja, which has one of the best-selling air fryers in the country, recently caused controversy with their cleaning method.

They teamed up with content creator Ciara, who goes by The Tummy Fairy on social media, to show their recommended way to clean your air fryer.

“Just add a squirt of dish soap and a quarter cup of baking soda,” Ciara instructed.

“You’re going to fill that all the way with boiling water, right up to the brim, and we’re going to let it sit for twenty minutes.

“Then pour it all out, rinse it with warm water, dry it with a paper towel and you’re done.

“It’s like brand new.”

The House of Representatives on Thursday passed its latest short-term relief measure to avoid a partial government shutdown at the end of the week, overcoming objections from right-wing Republicans to give Congress more time to resolve funding disputes problems that have persisted for months. .

The measure, initially floated by Speaker Mike Johnson, would extend funding for half of the government by one week, through March 8, and the rest by three weeks, through March 22. The Senate was expected to approve the measure as early as Thursday evening. cleaning up for President Biden and preventing a lapse in federal funding for several agencies that would otherwise begin at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

It passed by a vote of 320 to 99, with Democrats providing the majority of votes and Republicans roughly divided.

Congressional leaders cleared the way for the legislation Wednesday when they said they had reached agreement on six of 12 annual spending bills, and planned to finalize details, debate the package and ensure it passes by March 8 would be signed into law. If they don’t, they will face another partial shutdown next week.

And even if they do, lawmakers will still have to agree on the other six spending measures, and then implement them individually over the next three weeks, or face another possible shutdown.

For months, Congress has been locked in seemingly intractable spending negotiations as Republicans sought sharp cuts and conservative policy mandates refused to accept a deal with Democrats. Thursday’s vote marked the fourth time since September that lawmakers actually entered the fray and passed a stopgap bill that kept government funding at current levels.

It was also the latest example in which Mr. Johnson, who had vowed never to pass another stopgap spending bill, was forced to turn to Democrats to win passage of crucial legislation, sidestepping opposition from right-wing Republicans who refused to pass it law to allow. such measures to get votes.

Mr. Johnson said Thursday before the vote that Republicans in the House of Representatives, with its razor-thin majority and with Democratic control of the Senate and White House, were “trying to get the aircraft carrier back on real budget and spending reform.” He noted that lawmakers had tried to negotiate the spending bills separately, rather than packaging them into a single, sprawling package for an up-or-down vote — although the legislation scheduled for a vote next week would include six funding measures in one bill would bring together. .

“We have broken the omnibus fever. This is how Washington has been run for years,” Mr. Johnson said. “It was important to break it down into smaller pieces.”

Echoing comments he made personally at his conference, Mr Johnson said he was “excited” and “anxious” to “turn the page” on this year’s negotiations to fund the government, and in instead, start negotiations to finance the government for the next few years. fiscal year, which starts in October.

The text of the package of six spending bills that congressional leaders agreed to this week was expected to be released this weekend. Among the conservative victories House Republicans highlighted during a closed-door meeting Thursday was a measure that would block a move by the Department of Education that could have expanded Pell Grant access to more than a quarter of a million students . House Republicans estimate that the new FAFSA guidelines would have increased the program’s cost by $3 billion annually.

They also moved to ban the Department of Veterans Affairs from flagging veterans deemed mentally incompetent without a court order in the FBI’s gun background check database.

As negotiations dragged on, Mr Johnson had become increasingly outspoken behind closed doors about the limits of his influence at the negotiating table.

Republicans are divided over what to push for in the spending talks. Ultraconservative lawmakers who rarely support spending legislation have been the loudest voices in favor of cuts and tough policy provisions, but more mainstream and politically threatened Republicans have refused to support them. And far-right lawmakers have routinely blocked consideration of spending legislation, requiring Democratic votes to remove the bills from the House of Representatives.

“These are Republicans in the House of Representatives facing reality,” Rep. Patrick T. McHenry of North Carolina said of his colleagues.

“He is making the inevitable decision that was clear in September,” Mr. McHenry said of the speaker. “It was clear in November and December – it has been clear for months that this is the outcome.”

Hard-line conservatives who have lobbied for sharp cuts and a slew of conservative policy diktats — and rioted after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy passed a stopgap bill with the help of a bipartisan coalition — signaled their disappointment Thursday.

“Just more of the same,” Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, an influential conservative, said of the deal. “We’re not going to do anything that’s actually going to change the border.”

He added: “It’s just the swamp doing what the swamp does.”

Is theft on the rise at airlines? The simplest answer is that we don’t know.

Airlines do not make their in-flight theft statistics public. However, recent events have put the issue in the news.

In In December 2023, a man was accused of stealing $23,000 (£18,200) cash from three fellow passengers on a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore while in October Police have arrested a man who was traveling from Taipei to Tokyo suspected of serial thefts while on the run.

Are these high-profile cases related to a general increase in the number of light-fingered passengers during flights?

Not necessarily, says Jonathan Frankham, General Manager UK at World Nomads Travel Insurance. However, they are a reminder that you should be careful with your belongings during a flight.

While there are no concrete statistics on in-flight theft showing whether or not it is increasing, several high-profile cases have recently put the issue in the news.

Jonathan said: ‘While we have not observed any discernible trend in claims submitted suggesting that in-flight baggage theft is historically widespread or on the rise in recent years, it is still critical to be vigilant and take steps to prevent to ensure the safety of assets and important matters. documents.’

Most people carry several valuable items with them when flying. In addition to a wallet and phone, it is not unusual to carry a passport, laptop, cash and perhaps a camera or other valuables. Jonathan warns that this makes it easy for thieves to be caught.

He said: ‘It’s a calculated gamble on this part [of the thieves], which takes advantage of travelers’ sense of security once they are comfortably seated on board. Yet it is precisely during these moments – the buzz during meals, the dimmed lights or those quick sprints to the toilet – that thieves can try their luck.’

In the case of the arrest in Tokyo, reports said the 51-year-old suspect would pretend to check his own luggage into the overhead bin, but would instead steal US dollars, euros and yen from the bags of fellow travelers. The cash was exchanged for lower denomination Cambodian riel or Indonesian rupiah to maintain the weight and size of the wallet.

It’s not just cash or valuables that could be targeted. Passports continue to fetch a significant price on the black market.

How do you ensure that you do not become a target of theft from an aircraft?

Pack smartly and keep your valuables with you

Do not leave valuables, such as passports, cash or phones, unattended

Do not leave valuables, such as passports, cash or phones, unattended

This is your first line of defense. Jonathan said: ‘Packing smart is crucial. Choose a sturdy backpack, preferably one that can be securely closed and marked with colorful zippers for easy identification. [If] the zipper is missing or has been tampered with, it is important to notify an employee immediately.

‘Store larger bags in overhead lockers so they are safe. If space is available, it can be helpful to place them across the aisle so you can easily see if someone is walking through who shouldn’t be.”

For valuables such as passports, cash and phones, Jonathan advised: ‘The best practice is to use a secure fanny pack or carry it in your pocket. Do not leave them unattended and always keep them in sight. This not only minimizes the risk of theft, but also ensures that insurance claims are not negatively affected by negligence.”

What should travelers do if they become victims of thefts on board?

Report the incident to the airline as soon as you notice anything missing, in accordance with the guidelines of the Montreal Convention.

Jonathan explained: ‘This international treaty requires airlines to provide compensation for lost or damaged baggage on international flights. Although the treaty position on stolen baggage is less explicit, it is crucial to notify the airline as soon as possible.

“Second, travelers must obtain all necessary documentation to support their case. This also includes requesting a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) from the airline. Additionally, it is vital to keep all related documents such as tickets, luggage tags and receipts for any emergency purchases as these form an essential part of any subsequent insurance claims.

‘It is important to also involve the local police. Reporting the theft to the police and obtaining a citation is a crucial step as it provides official documentation of the theft, which is often required for insurance claims.”

What should travelers do if they need to make an insurance claim?

Mealtimes, bedtimes or trips to the bathroom provide the perfect time for opportunistic thieves to strike

Once you’ve notified the airline and the police, Jonathan says it’s essential to thoroughly review your travel insurance policy. ‘Although it usually covers such incidents, it is essential to understand the limits and exclusions of the policy, and additional premiums may be required for high-value items,’ he added.

‘Next, collect all necessary evidence, including proof of ownership, age and value of the stolen items, which are crucial to the claims process.

‘It is also important that travelers assess their responsibility in the situation. Ensuring that valuables are safe and that luggage is not left unattended is crucial, as negligence can affect the viability of a claim.

‘If in doubt or have any questions, travelers should not hesitate to contact their insurer.’
