Grim acts of ‘sushi terrorism’ have forced four of Japan’s ‘big five’ sushi restaurants to scrap self-service after footage showed customers rubbing their saliva on plates.

Sushi served on the conveyor belt has long been a favorite among diners, but there are now fears they are on their way out due to the horrific behavior of some customers.

Leading restaurants in Japan that use the Kaiten – or rotating – serving system are being forced to switch to more traditional methods of serving their raw delicacies as a result of the trends filmed and posted on social media.

Now, only one of the five largest sushi chains in Japan, Kura Sushi, remains committed to keeping its sushi available to customers.

The “sushi terrorism” trend in Japan has customers doing gross things at restaurants, such as licking bottles of soy sauce and eating ginger straight from a communal jar.

Yoshinoya

In April, footage showed a man, locally named Ryu Shimazu, dining in Yoshinoya, Osaka, using a pair of chopsticks to push large amounts of red grated ginger from a shared black container into his mouth.

According to local reports, he was arrested for conspiring to interfere in the affairs of the popular eatery.

Yoshinoya was subsequently forced to stop offering the band serving position after Shimazu “caused fear and ill feelings among other customers and raised questions about safety and security in the food service industry.”

But the heinous acts of ‘food terrorism’ did not stop there.

A kind of Sushiro

Other footage also shows a teenage diner at Akindo Sushiro, Japan, touching pieces of sushi on a conveyor belt with freshly licked fingers and cups, before leaving them in a pile for other customers to use.

The chain’s owner said the footage led to a sharp drop in shares after it went viral, racking up nearly 40 million views in June.

According to The Asahi Shimbun, Sushiro then removed the tires and introduced a large touchscreen to virtually show dishes instead of parading plates of food past guests.

A monitor, called Digital SushiroVision, or Digiro, shows animated images of sushi dishes moving around on the conveyor belt at each table and counter that can be ordered.

“Digital technology has helped us create a new way to enjoy conveyor belt sushi,” said Kohei Nii, president of Akindo Sushiro Co, the chain’s operator.

‘Digiro offers a happier and more enjoyable dining experience.’

The creepy clips have not only caused much embarrassment for the popular eateries, but have also increased costs for the targeted restaurants, who have been forced to apologize to their disgusted customers.

Choshimaru

Worried that the wave of ‘sushi terrorism’ in Japan is growing and images of the sickening acts are regularly appearing on social media, Choshimaru, a chain that operates restaurants in and around Tokyo, revealed last year that it would be taking drastic measures to combat the problem. to fight. after a diner stubbed out a cigarette in a jar of pickled ginger.

The chain’s staff initially began bringing condiments and cutlery to tables each time a new group of guests were seated.

But the eatery went one step further, revealing that conveyor belts at all 63 restaurants would be shut down – and more staff would be brought in to manually deliver orders.

While this took away the popular and fun element of ordering sushi, the company reasoned that the absence of plates traveling on a conveyor belt through the restaurant would make it virtually impossible for pranksters to tamper with other customers’ orders.

The new measures include installing antibacterial covers to protect the fish from stray saliva droplets and AI camera systems to identify suspicious customer behavior.

They have also added microchips to the boxes the sushi plates come in.

In addition to monitoring how long they have been on the leash, they can detect if the case has been tampered with, so customers can avoid sushi that may have been compromised.

“Conveyor belt sushi is something we are proud of as part of Japanese culture. “We want to ensure that our customers can safely and comfortably eat belt-delivered sushi,” a company official said last year.

These fancy, highly-acclaimed restaurants have certainly left a bad taste with some customers.

DailyMail.com has analyzed reviews left by Tripadvisor users to find some the worst ratings for three-star Michelin eateries in the US.

Despite their merit and high price points, there are seven restaurants with dozens of reviews deeming them ‘poor’ or ‘terrible.’ 

Bite your way down to see some of the complaints dished out by disgruntled diners – with everything from poor customer service and inedible dishes to rip off prices and menu spelling mistakes thrown into the mix.

Chef Daniel Humm’s New York restaurant Eleven Madison Park made its mark as the first ever vegan restaurant to be awarded three Michelin stars.

The Michelin experts highlight the restaurant’s precision, with ‘nothing out of place’ and an array of ‘custom made’ features, ‘from the staff’s suits to the handblown water vases.’

Addressing the plant-based menu, they describe it as ‘a bold vision of luxury dining’ which ‘elevates the concept to unparalleled heights.’

Standout dishes, they say, include ‘the freshly baked,’ the quenelle of tonburi, mimicking caviar, and ‘toothsome braised seitan, wrapped in spinach and dressed with morels.’

Eleven Madison Park has more Tripadvisor reviews than its contemporaries, with 2,697 entries. 

While the feedback is mostly positive, 162 diners (6 per cent) have left negative reviews. 

One patron who visited the swanky spot in January claimed his wife got some kind of tummy bug after eating there. 

He revealed: ‘Unfortunately, about six hours after we left, my wife had the chills, was nauseous, threw up, and had diarrhea. 

‘After eight to ten hours of that, she was feeling better. Not sure what she had, but something at dinner was not right.’ 

Another review left in October 2023 slams the service. It reads: ‘This was our second time at Eleven Madison Park and I was very surprised we weren’t welcomed as returning guest… very disappointing for a restaurant of this caliber. 

‘From the time we stepped into the restaurant and was led to our table, the mood was off and things didn’t quite feel right. 

‘From beginning to end the service was horrible! It literally took 30 minutes for us to get our first glass of wine. We felt it was way too much unnecessary time spent between meals. So much that we kind of thought they forgot about us.’

Masa, New York: From $750 per person

The Japanese eatery slides in at one of the more expensive spots, with its Omakase tasting experience priced at $750 per person. 

In terms of what bites to expect, the Michelin team says some of the signature creations include ‘a sweet chunk of hairy crab meat dressed in citrusy yuzu,’ a ‘glass coupe of minced toro and a very fine and generous – pile of Osetra caviar,’ and ‘wonderous’ Maine uni ‘served in its shell with caramelized custard and paper-thin white truffle.’

On Tripadvisor, the restaurant has 298 reviews and while many are positive, there are 39 negative pieces of feedback. 

One diner who visited the restaurant this February deemed their experience an ‘absolute catastrophe.’

Detailing their disappointing evening, they wrote: ‘What should have been an exceptional evening turned into a series of disappointments. 

‘The ambiance was marred by an out-of-place chorus of Happy Birthday songs and a distracting photoshoot at the counter. Mishaps followed, from discovering a hair on one of my plates to the unexpected unavailability of a pre-ordered wine bottle.

‘The most disheartening moment came during the Toro course, where conflicting explanations about its origin cast doubt on the restaurant’s integrity. 

‘Despite addressing concerns with the director of operations, disappointments persisted.’

Another poor one out of five review left in February 2022 reads: ‘Ridiculous, bad service, fast food type of sushi… 

‘I don’t know how Michelin gives the stars!!?? Portions and plate setting were amateur.’

Addison, San Diego: From $375 per person

Addison became San Diego’s first three Michelin star restaurant in December 2022. 

The Michelin guide praises chef William Bradley for ‘transforming this Southern Californian oasis into a world-class dining destination’ since opening it in 2006. 

The food is described as combining ‘global inspiration and Californian sentimentality’ with a ‘playful yet polished’ edge. 

Example dishes given include chicken liver churros, Kumamoto oysters with pickled green strawberry and Iberian ham ‘folded over a gloriously golden potato.’

The restaurant’s ten-course tasting menu changes seasonally and is available for $375 a person. 

While the experts applaud Bradley’s innovative culinary skills, some Tripadvisor reviewers are unconvinced with 21 negative reviews out of 297 (7 per cent). 

One reviewer who visited in December 2023 deemed it their ‘worst experience in a Michelin star restaurant ever.’

They wrote: ‘For starters, a glass of champagne was between $250 and $550…

‘Then the food was mediocre at best. The fish dry, the meat rather tasteless.

‘And the background music was too loud and too “hard” for a dinner. We complained twice and were told that it was the playlist of the chef and that’s it…

‘And the whole dinner was still not finished after 3.5 hours. We left without dessert, It was well past 11pm and we were tired and disappointed.’

Another reviewer who visited Addison the previous month also seemed unimpressed, simply branding it ‘pretentious.’

Their write up reads: ‘Pretentious, uncomfortable, overpriced and food is not memorable. 

‘So much effort is expended on trying to impress rather than trying to make the customer comfortable.’

The Michelin guide praises Keller’s ability to ‘pair classic French techniques with wildly fresh ingredients in a setting that is a perfect storm of restaurant greatness,’ with some of his signature dishes including ‘oysters with white sturgeon caviar in a warm sabayon studded with tapioca pearls,’ and ‘Wolf Ranch quail is then presented with white asparagus and dark cherries.’

While the majority of diners have given The French Laundry a thumbs up, it has a total of 143 negative reviews out of 1,725 entries (8.2 per cent) with the complaints ranging from the food being ‘pretentious’ to ‘rip off’ prices. 

One customer wrote after their visit in March 2023, ‘absolutely the worst Michelin rated restaurant with any stars.’

Their main complaint was that their reservation made through American Express’ concierge service wasn’t in the system and they were made to wait for an hour.

Another diner who visited in July 2022 deemed the experience ‘nothing memorable.’

They wrote: ‘If I could rate zero stars, I would. This overpriced dinosaur is a tourist trap with unfriendly service, pretentious food from a generation ago, and a poorly executed shuffle of untrained children. 

‘I could not wait to leave. If this is a great restaurant, then American dining should be the laughing stock of the world. What an embarrassment.’

Benu, San Francisco: From $390 per person

Benu’s website notes that it was the first restaurant in San Francisco to receive three stars from the Michelin Guide in 2014. 

The guide describes the Asian eatery as an ‘oasis in the center of the city’ with chef Corey Lee whipping up ‘highly-technical small bites.’

Some of his creations are revealed as ‘barbecued quail with house-made XO sauce’ and ‘faux-shark’s fin.’

It currently has 23 ‘poor’ or ‘terrible’ reviews out of 260 on Tripadvisor (8.8 per cent) but none of these are recent. 

The last review giving the restaurant just a one rating out of five and titled ‘wildly overpriced and pretentious’ is from March 2022.

The customer vented: ‘The “meal” is not so much of a meal as it is a floorshow. It’s a theatrical experience and the dishes are merely props. 

‘If you have no palate and you are easily dazzled by unique appearing foodstuffs, this may be the place you are looking for. For me, it was a disaster.’

Other disgruntled diners previously complained of ‘bland’ food and ‘rude’ service and one entry from August 2018 deems it ‘worst restaurant ever.’

Single Thread in California landed three Michelin stars in 2019. The Michelin Guide reveals that the restaurant ‘combines exquisitely with the deeply personal vision of owners Chef Kyle Connaughton and head farmer Katina Connaughton.’ 

The majority of the ingredients are sourced from the neighboring 24-acre field, while the style of the Connaughton’s cooking is said to be influenced by their time in Japan.

No dishes are detailed, but the guide says the ‘expert use of the donabe (Japanese claypot) is a signature, transforming seafood and vegetables alike.’

In total, the restaurant has 13 poor and terrible reviews out of 143 (9 per cent).

One disappointed diner wrote after their visit in January: ‘While the food presentation was visually appealing, it regrettably fell short in terms of taste. The flavors didn’t live up to the promising aesthetic. Moreover, the service had a somewhat awkward vibe, which affected the overall dining experience.

‘The letter sent to diners requesting a tip in advance is in poor taste. A gratuity is supposed to be an expression of gratitude, not a compulsory subsidy.

‘A check brought to the table before dessert is served is ludicrous.’

Another reviewer who visited in January 2023 titled their entry ‘well short of expectations,’ with their final note being: ‘Not something we would recommend for the cost vs value received in return.’

In terms of the food, chef John Shields and Karen Urie Shields are praised for their bold and creative cooking style. Some of the menu items are revealed as ‘wagyu sided by a truffle-flavored doughnut with marrow glaze’ and new potato ice cream.

Despite the praise, out of all of the three Michelin’s in the country, Tripadvisor reviewers gave Smyth the most damning reviews. 

One unhappy customer said of his experience in 2022: ‘I had very high expectations when I visited Smyth, but I have to say that I had a very poor experience (not even remotely comparable to other Michelin-starred restaurants in Chicago). 

‘The tasting menu was repetitive (three courses of lobster?) and very oily, so you could not taste the ingredients… The ‘caviar’ courses are not prepared with real caviar (from sturgeon), but with regular fish eggs – the chocolate caviar plate is inedible. 

‘The last dessert (the ‘mussel’) had a very strong bitter aftertaste. Service was rushed and inattentive.’

Another Tripadvisor reviewer wrote after visiting the eatery this January: ‘Disappointing on multiple levels; do not recommend. Top three critiques: the food started to taste the same (akin to blended seafood in salt), took four ‘courses’ and an ask to receive the martini I ordered, and a spelling error, which is ‘fine’ if you’re not a three star Michelin restaurant.’

But just how ‘properly’ is that? And how does the chain’s low-cost offering compare to a fine-dining version of the classic Brit favourite?

I endeavoured to find out, heading to a Toby Carvery in Worthing, West Sussex, for a three-meat roast costing the princely sum of £13.99, then trying the Sunday roast at London’s only Michelin-starred pub, Fulham’s renowned Harwood Arms, where a set three courses sets you back £70 plus tip.

What happens when the humble Sunday roast gets the Michelin-star treatment? Can it possibly be worth paying high-end prices for when you can get essentially the same dish with change back from £20? Read on to find out…

TOBY CARVERY – THE ‘HOME OF THE ROAST’ – WORTHING

It was a filthy February day when I headed to the Home of the Roast in Worthing. The very bones of me were cold – ideal circumstances for a bolstering feast.

It was my first-ever Toby Carvery visit, but many friends I respect were, if not evangelical, certainly warmly affectionate about Toby’s Sunday roasts. 

It was time to put this British institution through its paces.

In the interest of journalistic rigour, I had intended to order a ‘starter’ of pigs in blankets. But as soon as I mentioned I planned on the carvery, my waiter informed me that the ‘carvery deck’ was around the corner and to queue there for my serving. As a carvery naïf, I did as I was told.

My dining companion ordered mac ‘n’ cheese, which was delivered and demolished by the time I returned with my laden plate. (They had schlepped out in a tempest to the restaurant with me, so I didn’t admonish them. Also, they were 10 years old.)

When I made it through the winding queue to the ‘deck’ I was told to choose three meats. Wanting to make it to pudding, I limited myself to slow-cooked beef and pork loin. I associate canteen-style buffets with the slop they served in the mess tent on M*A*S*H, so I fretted a little.

I needn’t have: The beef was tender. I slathered it in English mustard and wondered how they’d managed to keep a soft, yielding texture for meat sunbathing under a heat lamp. A form of wizardry.

The pork loin, alas, erred towards what the Scots evocatively call ‘chugh’ – leathery meat. I had forgotten the apple sauce in the tumult of the ‘carvery deck’ – a fatal error. An undignified end for the poor pig.

The roasties had the damp kiss of the microwave, but their interior had the critical ‘smoosh’ factor one needs from a Sabbath spud. Yorkies were the size of a sombrero. Though greasier than ideal, I was impressed – crispy exterior, pancake-y interior, substantive but not stodgy. Admirable.

Dessert was apple and blackberry crumble. I wanted warm stewed fruit crowned with hot golden rubble, to warm my insides as ballast against the squall outside. And so it proved – a school dinner favourite, done perfectly well.

Now, a moan. There’s a Monty Python sketch in which a waiter, distraught his customer has been given a dirty fork, goes into increasing paroxysms of horror at letting the diner down. Reader, that waiter would spontaneously combust if he saw the glassware at Toby Carvery. I’m not Lady Muck, but I do prefer a clean tumbler.

Verdict: Crucially, Toby’s Carvery is not attempting a swizz – £13.99 for a mountain of well-prepared meat, endless veg, and as many roasties as you can pile on your plate. The ambience may be lacking – it’s dining without flair – but if you’re after a good feed, you’re quids in. 

PROS: Flavoursome meat, comforting food, mountainous puddings, value for money.

CONS: All the atmosphere of an airport lounge, queueing for food, dirty glassware.

Rating out of five: ***

Cost: £13.99 for three-meat carvery, with all the trimmings, £6.49 for a kid’s meal / £9.98 for two desserts / £5 gratuity.

If you’ve swerved Michelin-star establishments in your time for fear of tedious poncery, The Harwood Arms will not frighten you. 

Definitely ‘gastropub’ in feel, thoughtful touches suggest a studied casualness – scuffed, leather-bound chairs, antique pine tables. There is a hint of a hunting lodge theme that stops short of going full, fusty Balmoral.

That’s reflected in the menu, which is heavily game-orientated, and offers gently remixed versions of time-honoured British standbys. We’re not talking arty ‘deconstructions’ or weird-for-the-sake-of-weird innovation, just slightly more creative takes on dishes that – well, you can order at Toby Carvery.

Ok, not my first course, in fairness. A starter of grilled red deer tongue, strafed with drops of quince paste and beetroot doesn’t scream ‘British comfort food.’

But oh, let me tell you what a time I had eating it. Meat perfectly seared on the outside, with a superlatively yielding texture inside. Smokey, whisper-soft meat was cut through with the sweetness of the quince and beetroot. At the risk of sounding salacious, of all the tongue I’ve had in my time, I didn’t expect a deer’s to enter the top ten.

Then, to the main event – Iberian Pork with Jowl, with apple sauce, Yorkie, roasties, broccoli and carrot. Toby Carvery doesn’t tell you what farm its meat comes from, but The Harwood Arms does – and I have every reason to suspect my pig had a gorgeous life back at Whitley Manor, judging by how succulent yet lean it tasted. Ribbons of whisper-pink pork dissolved in my mouth.

As to the Yorkie? It was pretty good. Nothing rapturous. Yorkies are never the most flavoursome part of the roast, but it was just what you needed from a side dish that is essentially a carrier for other flavours, designed to complement one another.

This is where the dish triumphed. Every component existed in symphonic accord with the other – the apple sauce made the pork sing, and the roasties acted as a carbohydrate conductor that brought the whole mouthful together.

This was the platonic ideal of roasts. Can a roast dinner be elevated? You betcha.

I did not particularly need nor want dessert, but, one-woman Woodward and Bernstein that I am, I ate it to bring you the culinary scoop. Apple parfait with hazelnut and shortbread. 

Cherub-fat orbs of fresh apple cream, cut through with delicate hazelnut ice cream and biscuit that snapped so crisply it could moonlight as a twig. ‘This is what angels eat for breakfast,’ I moaned. I had found a pudding so delectable it would be worth suffering the fate the kids in Willy Wonka endure for stealing sweets.

Reader – the meal was plentiful. I am truthful when I say I had to let my belt out two notches.

Which is my only major complaint about Harwood. You have to have three courses on a Sunday, and you have to share the roast between two. Both caveats seem unreasonable – a roast is a hefty meal, and I loathe being overfull. Also, why should you have to have a companion with you to enjoy a handsome meal just because it’s the Lord’s Day?

It’s a silly prejudice, in my eyes. I’m sure there’s a justification related to covers and overheads, but it sits poorly with me.

Verdict: When you pay over the odds for a meal, the hope is, as much as anything, you’re paying for an experience. Toby Carvery is food as background noise – an old sitcom episode you put on for comfort but also to talk over.

At The Harwood Arms, food is the main event. The pub satiates hunger, yes, but more than that, they create gorgeous memories. I couldn’t afford to eat like this with any regularity, but if your pound stretches to it, it’s worth the splurge.

PROS: Spectacularly delicious food, laidback atmosphere, pudding of celestial quality

CONS: Seems churlish to insist on three courses, and having to dine with a guest, at these prices

Reports indicate that as of January 2024, as many as 1.8 million people had signed up to take part in Veganuary – an initiative that encourages people to ditch meat and dairy for a month – and beyond.

While just a few years ago it was difficult to find a vegan option in stores or on menus, plant-based eating is now being described as the fastest growing fast food segment of 2021.

Food delivery service Ubereats reported a staggering 163 percent increase in vegan food orders that year, showing a clear demand for food that is both meat and dairy-free.

But perhaps most importantly when it comes to food launches, Veganuary is described by co-founder Matthew Glover as a ‘bigger retail event than Christmas’ when it comes to food launches.

January is filled with plant-based launches, with retailers, diners and other food suppliers eager to join the Veganuary contingent.

In other words: there is plenty of demand for vegan food, and supermarkets and restaurants are happy to meet that growing demand.

However, some have noted that demand for plant-based products could have peaked, with a vegan eatery in Macclesfield, Cheshire admitting earlier this year that it had been forced to put meat on the menu to make more money.

Adonis Norouznia said he made the decision to change the menu at Nomas Gastrobar after too many customers came to the restaurant only to leave after reading the vegan menu.

Additionally, a number of meat alternative brands have seen sales decline, causing some businesses to face closure.

However, market research has attributed this to the cost of living crisis and the relatively higher prices of meat and dairy alternatives.

A report from market research company NIQ, entitled Flexitarianism: from niche to mainstream, shows that 14.3 percent (4.1 million) British households will follow a vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or flexitarian diet by 2023.

According to Katrina Bishop, UK thought leadership activation manager at NIQ: ‘UK consumers are facing challenging economic pressures, and price is a major factor preventing flexible eaters from purchasing meat and dairy alternatives in the current climate.

‘This is reflected in the impact Veganuary has had in driving new interest this year, with retailers’ focus being more on the overall price message, impacting sales during this period.’

Vegans do not eat any animal products and choose to avoid all meat and dairy products on ethical grounds.

The Vegan Society describes veganism as a philosophy and way of life that seeks to eliminate – as far as possible and practicable – all forms of exploitation of and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.

In addition to excluding animals and their secretions from their diet, vegans avoid wearing their skin (i.e. fur, leather and wool) and using animals for entertainment. For example, they do not visit circuses that use animals, or zoos or aquariums.

But while it’s becoming easier to have a vegan meal when you eat out, one group of people have complained that this comes at a loss: vegetarians.

Unlike vegans, vegetarians simply avoid consuming meat.

Although veganism is a protected belief under the Equality Act, vegetarianism is not so much a preference for simply avoiding meat – and some veggies are irritated by the subjugation of their diet to the trendy alternative.

This means that if restaurants offer a vegan meal, it covers both bases and is acceptable for both vegans and veggies.

And a fourth agreed, writing: ‘Well, I’m with that reader too! The gradual entry of vegans into restaurant menus, replacing virtually all vegetarian options, is a source of enormous disappointment.”

A fifth added: ‘It’s not exactly a big deal but there is now a trend towards making the one vegetarian option on a menu also vegan. People deserve real cheese!’

However, the topic was hotly debated, with a number of people arguing against having both vegetarian and vegan options on the menu.

One wrote: ‘Keep the vegan options as some of us are vegetarian by choice and then have a dairy intolerance. Knowing it’s vegan makes it easier to ask or choose and know it’s okay to eat without the risk of disease.”

Another wrote: ‘It’s a matter of cooking with the lowest common denominator. There are three times as many vegetarians as vegans, but many restaurants no longer have a vegetarian option and expect us to have to make do with vegan.’

Meanwhile, a third added: ‘I’m a vegetarian, I don’t mind the vegan choices, although I will ask if it can be vegetarian if it has cheese in it.’

And a fourth wrote: ‘The question people need to ask themselves is: why are they vegetarian? When it comes to animal welfare, bite the bullet and choose the vegan option and stop complaining.”
