Married At First Sight groom Jack Dunkley has been branded a 'shameful narcissist' by viewers after his cocky antics in Tuesday night's episode.

The Gold Coast personal trainer, 34, raised eyebrows after describing himself as an “alpha male” and a cross between “Christian Gray and Tarzan”.

'I have quite a sexual appetite. Very kinky. And I heard that's it [Christian Grey] all of them too,” said Jack, who walked down the aisle with bride Tori Adams.

Viewers rushed to criticize Jack on social media, with many slamming the producers of MAFS for casting him in the first place.

'Are they deliberately looking for narcissists?!?!' one commented.

“You're not an alpha if you have to say you are!” Secondhand shame,” another wrote, as someone else agreed: “Oh god, here we go!!! Total narc – we are now seeing the beginnings of trauma bonding.”

While Jack and Tori hit it off at their wedding, things quickly changed when Jack admitted that he wasn't sexually attracted to his new husband.

“There are no sexual sparks flying for me right now,” he admitted.

His revelation was a bombshell, considering the couple's seemingly passionate bond.

“I don't think we're sexually connected, well, we're not sexually connected at all,” he added.

For Jack, a personal trainer with a high sex drive, emotional connection is essential.

'I have a pretty high sex drive. I have to invest in the girl. I need to be connected. If not, I'd rather be alone,” he explained.

Marisa integreert klankgenezing in haar diensten.

Taylor Swift fans were left in shock when it was revealed in April that she’d called it quits with Joe Alwyn after six years together.

And with the hitmaker, 33, moving on from The 1975 frontman Matty Healy with American footballer Travis Kelce, DailyMail.com is taking a look back at her extensive dating history.

July- October 2008: JOE JONAS

Taylor dated Joe in the early days of her singing career back in 2008, but sadly split after only a few months together

Taylor dated Joe in the early days of her singing career back in 2008, but sadly split after only a few months together.

The singer revealed that she was dumped over ‘phone call’ and their relationship was inspiration for the star’s much-loved album Fearless.

The Grammy-winning songstress then went onto slam Joe during an appearance on The Ellen Show, saying: ‘There’s one (song) that’s about that guy, but that guy’s not in my life anymore, unfortunately. That’s ouch.

‘We haven’t talked since, but you know what, some day I’m gonna find someone really really great who’s right for me.’

‘When I look at that person, I’m not even going to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18.’

But in 2015, Joe revealed he harbored no bad blood with Taylor during an interview with Access Hollywood, admitting that having a song written about you goes with the territory of dating a musician.

And in 2021, Taylor hinted that she and Jonas were back on civil terms during another appearance on Ellen’s Burning Questions segment.

The star was asked what the most rebellious thing she did as a teenager was, which caused Taylor to laugh.

‘Probably when I like put Joe Jonas on blast on your show,’ she began. ‘That was too much, that was too much.’

Meanwhile in 2021, Taylor put out previously unreleased track Mr. Perfectly Fine which is believed to be about ex Joe.

August – November 2009: TAYLOR LAUTNER

Taylor and Taylor dated back in 2009, having first met while filming the upcoming ensemble romantic comedy Valentine's Day, where they shared an on-screen kiss.

Taylor and Taylor dated back in 2009, having first met while filming the upcoming ensemble romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, where they shared an on-screen kiss.

She described the moment as ‘life-changing’, and he appeared equally smitten, saying he definitely considered her ‘his type’.

When quizzed about their relationship on a U.S. radio show at the time, the Love Story singer played it coy.

She said: ‘I don’t know, he’s an amazing guy and we’re really close… and ah… yep.’

However it was a mere two months before their relationship was over.

‘He liked her more than she liked him. He went everywhere he could to see her, but she didn’t travel much to see him,’ a source told Us Weekly at the time. ‘They decided they were better as friends.’

It has long been rumored that Swift wrote Back To December about her 2009 relationship with Lautner.

November 2009 – February 2010: JOHN MAYER

John Mayer reportedly dated Taylor from December 2009 through February 2010 when he was 31 and she was 19

John Mayer reportedly dated Taylor from December 2009 through February 2010 when he was 31 and she was 19.

They originally met when she collaborated on his song Half of My Heart.

The romance seemingly ended on bad terms based on her scathing song Dear John which many people believe is about him.

The name of the song as well as lyrics recalling her age (19) at the time of the romance appear to lead to the conclusion that is is fact about John and their rocky but brief romance, although the songstress never confirmed it was about him.

The timing of the song also confirms its about John: She released the song in October 2010 on her Speak Now album, eight months after their reported split.

The tune gave insight on how Taylor and John’s reported romance went wrong, with the singer singing in tune: ‘Dear John, I see it all now that you’re gone/ Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with / The girl in the dress cried the whole way home.’

She also wrote the lyrics: ‘Well maybe it’s me / And my blind optimism to blame / Or maybe it’s you and your sick need / To give love and take it away.

‘Dear John, I see it all now, it was wrong / Don’t you think nineteen’s too young / To be played by your dark, twisted games.’

He added more fuel to the fire two years after the songs release when he told Rolling Stone magazine that he felt ‘really humiliated’ about the song, which ‘made’ him ‘feel terrible.’

October – December 2010: JAKE GYLLENHAAL

Swift and Gyllenhaal made headlines when they dated for just three months in the fall of 2010, when he was 29 and she was 20.

Sources told tabloids at the time that it was ‘serious,’ and they were even spotted together over Thanksgiving weekend.

Nearly two years after they split, Swift released Red, which included track number five, All Too Well, with allusions to the actor.

In the original lyrics, Swift sings about taking a trip upstate with her romantic partner, leaving her scarf at his sister’s house, dancing in the kitchen, and falling in love before it all ended.

She later teased on numerous occasions that the song as she originally wrote it lasted about ten minutes, but verses were cut for time.

Gyllenhaal, though, denied knowing anything about being featured on her album.

‘Do I [have a song]? I don’t know,’ he told Howard Stern in 2015.

Earlier this year, Taylor released a 10-minute long, deeply personal version of All Too Well, which offered added new dramatic details in recounting their romance, singing that she was in 'hell' and felt 'shame' (pictured, the music video)

The song would have firmly been in Swift’s past had it not been for the drama with her masters. In 2009, after Scooter Braun purchased her masters, Swift accused him of exerting ‘tyrannical control’ over her music, and the two had a bitter feud in the press.

At the urging of fans, Swift began rerecording all of the songs for which he owned the masters, which she has started to release — including several never-before-released tracks on each one.

Most damning, though were revelations that Gyllenhaal told Swift the problem was their age difference.

July- October 2012: CONNOR KENNEDY

Taylor and Connor – the son of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and the late Mary Kennedy – were first spotted together at the Kennedy family home in Hyannisport in July 2012

Taylor and Connor – the son of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and the late Mary Kennedy – were first spotted together at the Kennedy family home in Hyannisport in July 2012.

But the summer romance barely lasted three months. Insiders said Taylor – who was four years older than Conor – freaked the 18-year-old by coming on too strong – and because of her apparent obsession with his famous family.

‘Conor’s just an 18-year-old kid and wasn’t ready for anything super serious,’ a pal told RadarOnline.com.

‘But Taylor is looking for her soulmate and it kind of freaked him out with how strong she came on,’ the insider went on.

The friend also said that Taylor was obsessed with the Kennedy family – and was living out a fairytale with Conor.

‘She was more obsessed with the idea of dating a Kennedy, than the actual Kennedy she was dating,’ the pal added.

December 2012 – January 2013: HARRY STYLES

Fledgling couple Harry and Taylor dated from November 2012, with a source telling The Sun at the time: ‘Harry is head over heels for Taylor and even admitted he loves her while they were in the Big Apple.’

However they split just three months later in January 2013.

At the time it was reported she had ended their fling after an angry row during their New Year’s vacation.

He is largely believed to be the inspiration for her tracks Style and Out Of The Woods, both off of the album 1989.

In 2015, she admitted she always knew her relationship with Harry was doomed for fail.

In a video posted to celebrate the one year anniversary of her hit album 1989, she revealed that the number one feeling she felt during her three month fling with the One Direction singer was ‘anxiety’.

Before belting out a one-off acoustic version of Out Of The Woods, she elaborated on the relationship that inspired the song.

‘I’m going to play you a song that I wrote about a relationship that I was in that the number one feeling I felt in the whole relationship was anxiety,’ she explained as she sat at her piano.

In 2015, she admitted she always knew her relationship with Harry was doomed for fail because she felt ‘anxious’ the whole time

‘Because it felt very fragile, it felt very tentative. And it always felt like, ‘Okay, what’s the next road block? What’s the next thing that’s gonna deter this?

‘How long do we have before this turns into just an awful mess and we break up? Is it a month? Is it three days?’

The former One Direction-er previously spoke about Taylor’s songwriting back in 2017.

He kept coy about the songs, but defended Taylor against critics telling Rolling Stone: ‘I mean, I don’t know if [Out Of The Woods and Style] about me or not, but the issue is, she’s so good, they’re bloody everywhere.’

March 2015 – June 2016: CALVIN HARRIS

Taylor is rumored to have started their relationship after meeting the hunk at a BRIT Awards after party in London in February 2015.

However the couple ended up splitting in 2016 after a very public romance, with reports stating the relationship had ended because he was ‘jealous’ of the superstar singer’s success.

Calvin later accused Taylor’s team of leaking that she had secretly written the lyrics for his hit track with Rihanna, This Is What You Came For.

He wrote soon at the time: ‘Hurtful to me at this point that her and her team would go so far out of their way to try and make ME look bad at this stage though. I figure if you’re happy in your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do.

‘I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy [Perry] ETC but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it. Please focus on the positive aspects of YOUR life because you’ve earned a great one. God bless everyone have a beautiful day.’

Calvin later admitted ‘all hell broke loose’ when he split from Taylor.

He told GQ: ‘It’s very difficult when something I consider so personal plays out very publicly. The aftermath of the relationship was way more heavily publicized than the relationship itself.

‘When we were together, we were very careful for it not to be a media circus. She respected my feelings in that sense. I’m not good at being a celebrity.’

He continued: ‘But when it ended, all hell broke loose. Now I see that Twitter thing as a result of me succumbing to pressure. It took me a minute to realize that none of that matters. I’m a positive guy. For both of us it was the wrong situation. It clearly wasn’t right, so it ended, but all of the stuff that happened afterwards.’

June – September 2016: TOM HIDDLESTON

The couple – formerly known as Hiddleswift – became infamous due to their enthusiastic public displays of affection.

They shocked fans around the world after they were spotted locking lips on a beach in June 2016 – marking the beginning of their romance.

But the most infamous moment occurred during their July 4th weekend break in Rhode Island, where Tom was photographed frolicking in the surf with his lover while wearing a vest that was emblazoned with the message ‘I heart TS’.

Tom insisted that their relationship wasn’t a ‘showmance’ when talking to The Hollywood Reporter.

‘The truth is that Taylor Swift and I are together, and we’re very happy,’ he said. ‘That’s the truth. It’s not a publicity stunt.’

The couple even took the huge step of meeting one another’s parents, with Taylor jetting to the UK to spend time with Tom’s mother in Suffolk, while he went to her adopted home town of Nashville.

However it was soon reported she put the brakes on the relationship after having regrets about how public the first few weeks were and getting the impression that Tom liked the limelight.

A source told Us Weekly: ‘Taylor knew the backlash that comes with public displays of affection but Tom didn’t listen to her concerns when she brought them up.

‘I think she feels a little embarrassed that the whole world saw them so serious and now it’s over.’

According to the publication, the pair were also struggling maintain a long-distance relationship, and met up in her Rhode Island home just last month in a bid to work through their problems.

They ended up breaking up in September of that year an insider exclusively told DailyMail.com that the pop star felt ‘uncomfortable’ with the actor’s desire to be ‘so public’ about their romance.

Tom had asked Taylor to the Emmy Awards that month, but she began questioning whether he was with her for ‘the right reasons’ and ultimately decided to call off the romance.

The actor commented in a GQ profile in a 2017: ‘Taylor is an amazing woman. She’s generous and kind and lovely, and we had the best time.’

He also nixed speculation the relationship was a stunt purely designed for publicity, insisting: ‘Of course it was real.’

He claims they were both seeking a normal relationship, adding: ‘So we decided to go out for dinner, we decided to travel… She’s incredible. [But] a relationship in the limelight… A relationship always takes work. And it’s not just the limelight. It’s everything else.’

Taylor began dating the Conversations With Friends star, 31, in late 2016 after they were rumored to have crossed paths at that year’s Met Gala in New York City.

The Lover singer reportedly kicked off her romance with Joe just months after her shock split from Loki actor, Tom Hiddleston, in September 2016.

Taylor gave fans insight into their burgeoning romance by alluding to Joe in lyrics on her hit 2017 album Reputation, including the song Gorgeous where she recalls ‘making fun of’ his English accent.

The Grammy Award-winner opened up even more on her 2019 album Lover, where she gushed about her ‘London boy’ on multiple tracks.

The song Cruel Summer is also rumored to be about the overlap between the beginning of her romance with Joe and the end of her fling with Hiddleston.

Joe told The Sunday Times in 2018 that he finds it ‘flattering’ that Taylor uses him as her musical muse.

Just two years later, Taylor welcomed her beau into the songwriting world by allowing him to pen lyrics for her 2020 alum, Folklore.

Using the pseudonym ‘William Bowery,’ Joe co-wrote two songs for the Grammy Award-winning album and three more songs for Folklore’s sister record Evermore.

Although she feels safe opening up in her music, Taylor previously stated that her relationship with the British hunk ‘isn’t up for discussion’ in the press.

She discussed the decision to keep their romance ‘private’ in her 2020 Netflix documentary Miss Americana, which included rare footage of herself and Joe.

Though the pair have yet to make a red carpet debut, they’ve attended several high-profile events together – including the Golden Globes in 2020.

They were hit with engagement rumors in July 2022 but Taylor seemingly shut them down in the lyrics on her latest album Midnights.

A source told the outlet that the split was ‘not dramatic’ and that the relationship had simply fizzled out.

They had first connected – and been at the center of romance rumors – back in 2014.

Matty had been seen publicly supporting the singer on her The Eras Tour, shooting the star loving glances as he attended her Nashville concerts.

The pair were also seen in NYC numerous times, leaving a recording studio and heading for dinner with her pals, Margaret Qualley, Phoebe Bridgers and Zoe Kravitz.

He had also been seen sneaking out of her NYC apartment.

A friend close to the star confirmed Taylor is ‘single’ again. It is not clear why the pair have split.

Back in July, the Chiefs star first expressed his interest for Swift on his podcast that he hosts with brother, Jason, called New Heights With Jason and Travis Kelce.

He opened up about attending her Eras Tour concert in Kansas City and stated, ‘If you’re up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets, and I received a bunch of them being there, but I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it.’

However, he wasn’t able to do so, admitting, ‘I was a little butthurt that I didn’t get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her. She doesn’t meet anybody — or at least she didn’t want to meet me. So, I took it personal.’

Earlier this month in September, Travis addressed romance rumors that had begun circulating between him and Swift during an interview on The Pat McAfee Show.

The host brought up the speculation that was ‘being talked about by the whole entire world right now.’

The professional NFL star admitted to McAfee, ‘It’s life, baby. I threw it out there, I threw the ball in her court.’

On September 24, Taylor was seen attending the Kansas City Chiefs game against the Chicago Bears and joined Kelce’s mother, Donna, in a VIP section at the stadium.

The Grammy winner sported a red and white-colored ensemble to show her support for the recent Super Bowl champions and appeared to be having a blast with Kelce’s mother as they shouted and cheered on the team and tight end.

Also earlier in September, a source told DailyMail.com, ‘Travis and Taylor are talking and Travis is absolutely interested.’

‘He has shot his shot and would love to take Taylor on a date and see where they can go in the relationship department.’

The insider added, ‘The one problem that they have now is that their schedules are so all over the place that it is difficult to get together without being seen and everything else that comes from being the celebrities that they are.’

‘It isn’t organic to Travis and his liking, but he certainly likes the rumors, because he actually would love to date Taylor if she would give him a chance.’

Swift has since attended a total of three Kansas City Chiefs games and is expected to attend more but ‘doesn’t want to be a distraction,’ a source dished.

The couple had their first public PDA outing on Saturday, October 14 when they were spotted holding hands while on a date night in New York City.

Travis flew to Argentina in November to watch Swift perform her Eras Tour show and they shared a passionate kiss when she walked off stage.

He’s since marveled over her ‘genius’ and she has moved into his Missouri home as she enjoys a two month break from touring.

Eitan Yahalomi, 12, was beaten and forced to watch videos of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, said his aunt, Deborah Cohen.

And Emily Hand, who lived to be nine in captivity, now speaks only in whispers, her father says. She was convinced that her time in Gaza had lasted a year.

Many of their experiences, including their conditions, where they were held and how they were separated, remain unknown. But interviews with their relatives reveal hints about the ordeals of children held hostage by Hamas in Gaza for more than 50 days.

Eitan’s aunt spoke about his experiences to a French broadcaster. Emily’s father was interviewed on CNN. Both struggled to remain calm as they spoke.

Like many hostages, the children return to Israel without knowing whether their relatives are alive, dead or held captive. Some children, including Eitan, have been released while their fathers were held hostage.

Eitan, who was described by relatives as a boy who loved nature, animals and football, told Ms Cohen that children in captivity were threatened with a gun every time they cried “to silence them”.

“Hamas made him watch the gruesome images, which no one wants to see,” she further said BMTV. “They let him look at it.”

The reporter clarified: “We are talking about the gruesome images of October 7, right?”

“Yes, yes,” Ms. Cohen replied. “The whole thing.”

“How can you feel good after experiencing something like that?” said Mrs. Cohen. ‘I’ll go up to him and give him a big hug. He still has a long way to go.”

Emily’s father, Thomas Hand, said that one night after she came home, she cried until her face was “red and blotchy.”

‘The most shocking and disturbing thing about meeting her was that she was just whispering, you couldn’t hear her. I had to put my ear to her lips,” said Mr. Hand. “She was conditioned not to make any noise.”

  • The dog Simona was ’emotionally affected’ by the separation of her two owners

For one family dog, the separation from her two owners was all too much: she waited days for her owner to come visit her, but he had to leave after a few hours.

The family home that the dog, affectionately named Simona, had known for the first years of her life changed forever when her owners Jader Castano and Lina Ochoa decided to divorce in 2021.

Lina had full custody of Simona and refused to allow Jader, a rector at the Colombian university, to make guaranteed visits to see and play with the dog, which he affectionately called his “hija perruna” or “dog child.”

That meant Simona would wait weeks to see her beloved Jader again – and the belly rubs never lasted long enough before her master had to trudge away from her.

Jader was convinced that Simona was “emotionally affected” every time their encounters ended and that the principal himself became depressed after losing the dog in the divorce – so much so that he could not eat a meal due to his grief, according to court documents.

For one family dog, the separation from her two owners was all too much: she waited days for her owner to come visit her, but he had to leave after a few hours (file image)

After months of heartbreak, Jader decided to do something about it and took the matter to court, hoping that he would be able to see Simona during pre-arranged and guaranteed visits.

And judges at Bogota’s Supreme Court ruled last month that the dog should be legally considered his “daughter” and treated as a child in divorce proceedings in the first case of its kind in Colombia.

Jader had sued his ex-wife for refusing to let him make scheduled visits to Simona, arguing that the dog was part of the “family core” and that they had a “bond of love.” He said both he and the dog had both been hit hard by the separation and lack of frequent visits.

Before the Colombian judges, the lawsuit demanding regular visits was ruled out by a broader question: Should Simona be treated as a family member?

Their answer was yes – and the judges ruled that Simona had been a member of the ‘multispecies’ family before the divorce.

‘In the present case it must be emphasized that the plaintiff [Jader] considers Simona his daughter and that Simona also receives a reaction because of Jader and Lina’s divorce.

They ruled that Jader was now entitled to regular and scheduled visits to his beloved dog Simone, who the judges said had also suffered emotionally after the marriage collapsed.

In 2016, Colombian judges ruled that animals are not objects that people can simply transport, but living beings with feelings.

The court also ruled that owners must care for the emotional and physical well-being of their pets and protect them from pain.

But the latest ruling went much further, declaring that pets can be viewed as family members – and should be treated as such.

According to the Harvard Review of Latin America, the rights of animals and pets have become enshrined in the laws of countries throughout Latin America in recent years.

‘Latin American legal systems are at the forefront when it comes to considering animals as family members. “Because of a recent global change in attitudes toward animals in Western societies, many people today recognize themselves as part of a multispecies family,” the Harvard Review wrote.

In Peru, a court ruled in 2018 that a three-year-old pig named Petunia was a family member and should not be separated from her owners.

With every mass shooting, Americans look to one grim indicator – the number of deaths – as a measure of the devastating impact. But the damage left by gunshot wounds reverberates among survivors and families, causing mental health disorders to skyrocket and placing enormous burdens on the health care system. a new analysis of private health insurance claims.

In 2020, gunshot wounds became the leading cause of death for children and adolescents in the United States. Although the government does not systematically track non-fatal gunshot wounds, existing evidence suggests that it does two to three times as common as fatal. These wounds can be especially catastrophic in children, whose bodies are so small that the amount of tissue destroyed is greater.

“What comes after the shot is so often not talked about,” said Dr. Chana Sacks, co-director of the Gun Violence Prevention Center at Massachusetts General Hospital and author of the new study, published Monday in the journal Health Affairs . The research, which analyzed thousands of insurance claims, identifies lasting damage to families and communities.

  • In families where a child died of a gunshot wound, surviving family members experienced sharp increases in psychiatric disorders, took more psychiatric medications, and made more visits to mental health professionals: fathers had a 5.3-fold increase in treatment of psychiatric disorders in the year after death; mothers had a 3.6-fold increase; and surviving siblings had a 2.3-fold increase.

  • Children and teens who survive gunshot wounds become, like Dr. Sacks put it, ‘more lifelong patients’. During the year after the injury, their medical costs increased by an average of $34,884, a 17-fold increase over baseline, driven by hospitalizations, emergency room visits and home care, the study found.

  • Children and adolescents who survived the most serious gunshot wounds and required treatment in an intensive care unit struggled significantly. In that group, diagnoses of pain disorders increased by 293 percent, and psychiatric disorders by 321 percent.

The study examined the medical records of 2,052 children who survived gunshots, 6,209 relatives of children who survived, and 265 relatives of children who died from gunshot wounds, comparing each with five control subjects. Because the study was based on private insurance claims, it did not reflect the experience of families who were uninsured or had public insurance.

The rising costs associated with firearm injuries are making it “increasingly an economic issue,” said Dr. Zirui Song, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and co-author of the study. The prevalence of gunshot wounds has quadrupled in the past 12 years among the population covered by private insurance, he said.

In an article published last year in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Song puts the annual cost of firearm injuries in lost wages and medical expenses at $557 billion, or 2.6 percent of gross domestic product. The new study is the first to focus on the costs of non-fatal gunshot wounds, he said.

“The cruel reality is that when someone dies from a firearm injury, they are free in society – no more health care expenditures, no more tax dollars, no more resources used,” he said. “But actually surviving a firearm injury is quite expensive for society. How big that was was previously unknown.”

National data on nonfatal gunshot wounds is “disturbingly unreliable,” but many survivors face long-term disability, said Dr. Megan Ranney, an emergency room physician and the dean of the Yale School of Public Health, who was not involved in the study was involved.

“They may have been shot in the intestines, or through a major blood vessel, a bullet may have gone through their lungs,” said Dr. Ranney. “They may also have been shot in the head or spine.”

Trauma physicians have long observed the ripple effect of shootings on the health of family members and communities, she said, often due to repeated emergency room visits for nightmares, anxiety or depression, but “we’ve never been able to measure it. ”

Clementina Chery, a Boston woman whose 15-year-old son was fatally shot in a crossfire in 1993, and who founded the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, an organization to support families who have lost members to gun violence, she said she has often seen survivors struggle with addictive behavior, job loss, suicidal or homicidal thoughts in the years after a young person has died.

“In that immediate aftermath, I just felt like I was having an out-of-body experience,” Ms. Chery said. She turned to alcohol, she said – “a little wine here, a little wine there” – and found it difficult to leave her house. Her marriage ended. What finally woke her up, she said, was the realization that her younger children were no longer paying attention.

“I was literally going through the motions,” she said. “I wasn’t alive. It was like, what do you call it, a mechanical robot.”

The ripple effect of gunshot wounds is important because these injuries are often concentrated in specific communities. mostly communities of color, where many young people know someone who has been shot, said Dr. Sacks.

She traced her interest in the subject to the 2012 mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where her cousin’s 7-year-old son was among 20 children murdered. The child’s death “changed my life” and continued to shape large families and communities in the years that followed, she said.

“We can’t look at this as a problem that starts and ends with the bullet going in and then the acute surgical care,” said Dr. Sacks. “Leaving the hospital is just the beginning of the family’s journey, and I think we should treat it that way.”

Rahkim Sabree owns a home in Hartford, Connecticut, invests and has savings. But that’s not always enough to make him feel safe. Unexpected expenses, regardless of cost, cause him discomfort.

“I get very anxious when I have to spend money,” Mr. Sabree, a 33-year-old financial coach and advisor, said. This sometimes causes him to put off paying for necessary things, such as new shoes or household repairs.

During his teenage years, Mr. Sabree, who is black, lived with his family in subsidized housing and paid for his groceries with food stamps. “When it got really bad, we were without electricity and water,” he said. More than once they were almost kicked out. It was embarrassing to see an eviction notice on the door, Mr. Sabree recalls.

Those experiences shaped the way he spends and saves. Feeling in control of his money brings peace of mind, Mr. Sabree said. But when that control slips away, fear creeps in. “It feels like something is happening to me, rather than me making something happen,” he said.

Experiences like Mr. Sabree’s can lead to some financial psychologists’financial trauma— an intense and lasting emotional response to current or past financial problems, he said Alex Milkumianpsychologist and founder of the Financial Psychology Center in Los Angeles.

Financial trauma can trigger negative thoughts, flashbacks, and anxiety — symptoms that reflect post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. Unlike everyday stress, trauma does not wax and wane. It ultimately damages your relationship with money, said Thomas Fapa financial therapist in San Francisco.

Common causes of financial trauma include medical debt, financial insecurity, and an economic crisis. For example, survivors of the Great Depression were less inclined to invest in the stock market because they feared another crash, which would hurt their retirement savings.

Trauma can also cross generations in different ways, such as inheriting debt from your parents. Dr. Melkumian added that systemic issues, such as racism and discrimination, may also play a role.

Unlike PTSD, financial trauma is not a mental health diagnosis, so financial advisors and therapists often overlook it. Many people are never told that scary experiences with money can damage their financial and psychological health, said Mr. Faupl. Nevertheless a 2016 questionnaire found that 25 percent of Americans, including 36 percent of millennials, reported symptoms of PTSD caused by financial problems.

A telltale sign of financial trauma is avoidance of money, said Dr. Melkumian. In other words, some traumatized people may refuse to budget, open their accounts, or discuss their finances.

Avoidance can also mean neglecting to spend when you should. For example, Mr. Sabree often attributed his behavior to frugality. But he realized that his choices, as opposed to saving for a rainy day, were sometimes motivated by a desire to avoid poverty one more time.

Any painful experience with money can make you feel unsafe, said Aye Evans, a financial therapist in New York City. This often leads to negative thoughts, she explained, such as “I’ll never have enough money” or “I’ll never be good with money.”

Overspending can also be evidence of financial trauma. You could try to compensate for the feeling of deprivation as a child by overindulging yourself as an adult. For example, you may waste your savings on a vacation, eat out too much, or spend all your money on online shopping.

Chantel Chapman, a 40-year-old entrepreneur in Richmond, British Columbia, was once a spendthrift in this way. For nearly a decade, she bought gifts, outfits and dinners she couldn’t afford, she said. This left her with nearly $10,000 in credit card debt and $10,000 in tax debt, stunting her savings.

Like Mr. Sabree, Mrs. Chapman grew up without financial security. But while Mr. Sabree’s financial trauma made him frugal, Mrs. Chapman’s resulted in overspending.

“I had a skewed relationship with money,” she said. Ms. Chapman said she feared debt, but her desire to belong to a wealthier crowd had caused her to spend beyond her means. Trauma turned her into a people pleaser, she said, adding, “I thought I had to look a certain way to be accepted.”

Sabotaging your financial future is another danger signal. You might believe that having a high-paying job makes you selfish or is something you don’t deserve, Mr Faupl said. As a result, saboteurs may refrain from applying for a higher-paying job, or they may never ask for a raise.

Once you can recognize the signs of financial trauma, you can work on a solution. To begin with, try to examine the “problem through the window of money,” Mr. Faupl. From this point of view, ask yourself, “What should I do to address my financial situation?”

Any thought, feeling, or memory associated with the trauma can cause distress. For example, if you lost money during the 2008 financial crisis, seeing the stock market fall may cause anxiety. Or if you’re saddled with student debt, the end of the payment break can be nerve-wracking.

“It can feel like watching a scary movie all over again,” says Michelle Griffith, senior wealth advisor at Citi Personal Wealth Management.

Ms. Griffith has seen a resurgence of financial trauma in some of her clients. In 2009, some people lost up to 40 percent of their retirement savings. Now, with the possibility of another recession, they worry about a recurrence. This can make people fear the risks associated with investing, Ms Griffith said, forcing them to cash in on their investments or retirement accounts too quickly.

When the emotional tide is high, Ms. Griffith recommends guiding decision-making by facts. “Even bear markets are recovering,” she said. And for the past 70 years, the stock market has fallen by 5 percent several times a year. Knowing that dips are temporary can help ease the sting, Ms Griffith said.

While no one can predict the future, being able to recognize your triggers puts you in a better position to take care of yourself, Ms Evans said. Even taking a few deep breaths, walking or talking to a friend is calming, making you less likely to resort to impulsive actions, she said.

Boundaries help us feel safe in relationships, and they can also control our financial behavior.

For example, Ms. Evans recommends that overspenders remove credit cards from apps and online stores. The excitement of a purchase creates a dopamine rush, which can hinder your self-control, she said. But if your credit card isn’t handy, it’s harder to enjoy.

People who avoid money may take small risks, such as pushing themselves to spend $10 or $20 on a joyful experience. Dr. Melkumian calls this “compulsory spending” and said it was a way to get out of your safe zone. It does the opposite of what the negative emotion tells you to do, he said.

Any behavior that intercepts avoidance is also beneficial. Ms. Griffith suggested automatically transferring money from your checking account to your savings each month. You can also automate your monthly bill payments and allocate money from each paycheck to your retirement account.

Recovering from financial trauma is a two-pronged approach. You have to address both the financial aspect and the trauma it has caused, Mr Faupl said.

Talking to one financial therapist specializing in financial trauma is the first step. With a background in psychology and money, the financial therapist can help you understand the relationship between your painful experience and your financial problems. For example, if your family had a fight about money when you were a kid, Mr. Faupl said, you might avoid difficult financial conversations as an adult. Or if you grew up without financial security, you may be hoarding money later in life.

In addition to therapy, taking a financial literacy course or speaking with a financial advisor can put you on the road to success.

As part of her recovery, Ms. Chapman turned to psychotherapy and financial education. However, none of her therapists made the connection between her trauma and money problems. She was told to exercise willpower, which caused more embarrassment, she confessed. Hoping to educate others, Ms. Chapman co-founded the Money traumaan educational site that provides financial trauma literacy classes.

Mr. Sabree also strives to help others, especially those in the black community, develop healthier financial habits. In his personal and professional experience, financial trauma never really goes away.

“It’s not like turning off a light switch,” he said. It cannot be erased, but you can work through it.
