Georgia, with its long history of black voter suppression, has been ground zero for fights over voting rights laws for decades. The state has often seen stark disparities in turnout between white and non-white communities, with the latter typically voting at a much slower rate.

But not always: In the 2012 election, when Barack Obama won a second term in the White House, the turnout rate for black voters under 38 in Lowndes County—a Republican-leaning county in south Georgia—was actually four percentage points higher than the turnout of black voters under 38. rate for white voters of a similar age.

It turned out to be temporary. Turnout for younger white voters in Lowndes was 14 percentage points higher in 2020 than for Black voters of the same age, according to new research from Michael Podhorzer, the former political director of the AFL-CIO.

What happened in between? It’s impossible to say for sure because there are many variables, including the fact that Obama is no longer on the ballot.

But a growing body of evidence points to a pivotal 2013 Supreme Court decision, Shelby County v. Holder, that overturned a core part of the Voting Rights Act. The court effectively struck down a provision that required counties and states with a history of racial discrimination in elections — including all of Georgia — to obtain permission from the Justice Department before changing voting laws or procedures.

The result was a slew of laws that imposed restrictions on voting, such as limiting voting by mail and adding voter identification requirements. (One new provision in Georgia, which prohibits most people from providing food and water to voters waiting in line within 50 yards of a polling place, was featured on a recent episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”)

For years, political scientists and civil rights leaders argued that the Supreme Court’s decision would lead to a resurgence of suppression of historically marginalized voters because local and state governments, many in the South, would no longer need federal permission to change voting laws and regulations. Two new studies support that theory.

This month, research from the Brennan Center found that the gap in turnout rates between white and nonwhite voters “grew nearly twice as fast in previously covered jurisdictions as in other parts of the country with similar demographic and socioeconomic profiles.”

In other words, the turnout gap tended to grow fastest in areas that lost federal control after 2013.

Podhorzer’s research analyzed turnout at the provincial level. He found that the growing disparity in racial turnout since the Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby was felt most acutely by younger voters across the country.

These are trends that worry Democrats when it comes to areas like Lowndes, home to Valdosta State University, with more than 12,000 students.

Podhorzer discovered that older voters are more resistant to voting changes because they have developed a fixed voting behavior. But it is much more likely that younger or new voters will be discouraged or prevented from voting.

It is “a kind of generational replacement, with older and established voters maintaining their voting habits, while new restrictions hinder younger voters,” Podhorzer said in his report, which will be released this weekend.

In Bulloch County, Ga., Winston County, Miss., and Newberry County, S.C., the racial turnout gap among young voters grew by 20 percentage points or more between the 2012 and 2020 elections. In each of these counties, the gap for both Gen X and even older voters has never grown by more than 11 percentage points.

The youth vote in November will be critical, especially for President Biden. He won 60 percent of voters under 30 in 2020, as exit polls show, an important part of his coalition. But the 2022 midterm elections saw that a downward trend in the youth vote, and young voters have expressed exasperation with the president heading into this year’s elections.

A caveat: Using turnout to assess the impact of changes in voting laws is an imperfect assessment at best because it does not take into account other motivating factors, such as close races or polarizing candidates. It also ignores aspects of the cost of voting, such as the time it takes.

Seeing a more substantial racial turnout gap among young voters goes against some conventional wisdom about recent changes in voting laws. Political experts have often argued that limiting access to mail-in voting or reducing the number of polling stations is likely to impact older voters, who are often less mobile.

But Bernard Fraga, a professor of political science at Emory University in Atlanta, noted that seeing a wider racial turnout gap among young voters was “fairly consistent with the previous literature on who should be most affected by these types of laws.”

“For populations that have historically been disenfranchised or less likely to vote, small changes in voting bills can have a much larger impact,” Fraga said, “because they are less resilient to this type of oppression. ”

By all estimates, a relatively small number of voters in just a few states are likely to decide this year’s presidential election: the undecided voters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Wisconsin.

Do you live in one of those states? Not sure whether to vote for President Biden, former President Donald Trump or someone else? If you lean one way, can you be persuaded to change your mind? Are you considering not voting at all?

The Princess of Wales has touchingly revealed how she is reassuring her young children amid her battle with cancer after the announcement she is fighting the disease.

The mother-of-three says she and Prince William have explained the situation to their children George, Charlotte and Louis, after the ‘huge shock’ of her diagnosis.

Princess Catherine said had told them she is doing ‘well and getting stronger every day’ and that she was ‘focusing on the things that will help me heal’.

The 42-year-old also revealed that she was comforted by having her husband by her side, and that they were doing ‘everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family’.

In a televised address, the future Queen revealed that she had been diagnosed with cancer after undergoing a successful abdominal operation in January, and that doctors have advised her to undergo preventative chemotherapy.

Speaking from a bench surrounded by daffodils and spring blossom, the Princess of Wales revealed her shock diagnosis this evening.

‘I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery,’ she said.

‘It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.’

Kensington Palace has said it will not be sharing details of what kind of cancer the princess has, or what stage of cancer it is and has asked people not to speculate.

The future Queen revealed that she and her husband have been focusing on their children during this difficult time.

She said: ‘But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok.

‘As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits.

‘Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too.

‘As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both.’

It is understood that the King – who is also currently undergoing cancer treatment himself – and the Queen have both been informed of the news.

Earlier she revealed that she had been diagnosed with cancer after undergoing a planned operation at The London Clinic two months ago.

‘In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous,’ she said.

‘The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present.

‘My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.’

The Princess of Wales added that the news had left the family shaken and they have been coming to terms with her diagnosis in private.

She said: ‘This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.

‘As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment.’

Catherine added that she and her family would like privacy while she battles the disease.

She said: ‘We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment.

‘My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.

‘At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer.

‘For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.’

This evening’s announcement will send shockwaves around the world and came after weeks of speculation – and wild conspiracy theories – about her health. It also creates a fresh crisis for the British Royal Family at a time where King Charles is also battling cancer. In January Sarah, the Duchess of York, was diagnosed with skin cancer, just six months after being treated for breast cancer.

It comes after sick social media trolls spent weeks spreading wild rumours about her wellbeing as palace aides refused to comment on her recovery from abdominal surgery in January.

The princess is now on what has been described as a ‘recovery pathway’ having commenced a course of chemotherapy in late February.

It is for this reason that Prince William pulled out of a memorial service for his late godfather, King Constantine of Greece.

Kensington Palace has strongly asked people not to speculate on what cancer she has.

However they say that she is in ‘good spirits and focused on her recovery’.

‘She is hugely grateful to the medical team for the care they are providing to her,’ a spokesman said.

‘She now needs time, space and privacy to complete her treatment and make a full recovery.’

It is understood that the announcement was made tonight not because of unpleasant social media speculation about her health and whereabouts – although that has been upsetting and unpleasant – but because her children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louise, five, broke up from school today, which gave them the opportunity to take them away privately and protect them from the inevitable public shock.

A spokesman for the princess said: ‘We will not be sharing any further private medical information. The Princess has a right to medical privacy, as we all do.’

However her spokesman confirmed: ‘The Princess is now on a recovery pathway having commenced a course of preventative chemotherapy…in late February.’

The palace will not confirm how long her treatment is expected to last and has asked the media and public not to speculate.

It also said it would not confirm where her treatment would be taking place, a spokesman adding: ‘We will not be sharing any further private medical information. The Princess has a right to medical privacy, as we all do.’

Asked when the princess was given the news by her doctors, a spokesman explained: ‘Once post-operative tests had been completed and results reviewed.’

They added: ‘The Princess wanted to share this information when she and The Prince felt it was right for them as a family. ‘

A source said it had been ‘an incredibly tough couple of months for the entire family’ and it had been important for the princess to come to terms with her diagnosis, to recover form her surgery and begin her pathway to recovery.

Throughout this period the couple’s children have been her priority.

It is understood that William and Kate wanted to tell their children at a time that was right for them and to allow them to understand and process the news before it became public.

With the children having broken up from Lambrook School today for the Easter holidays this afternoon, they decided that now was the right time to share the statement.

Sources say their concern recently, despite global and social media speculation, was to put Catherine’s health and their children first.

It is now hoped, aides said, the speculation around the princess comes to a stop.

Catherine is apparently determined to go about her normal routine, which she sees as an important part of her recovery, and has asked for people to respect her privacy.

Joni Mitchell’s music has quietly returned to Spotify, more than two years after she followed Neil Young in protest against what she called “lies” about the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines on the streaming platform.

There was no official announcement of Mitchell’s decision, but on Thursday, fans on social media began to note with excitement that a number of her albums were reappearing on Spotify. By Friday morning, most if not all of Mitchell’s original albums had returned, including classics like “Blue” (1971), “Court and Spark” (1974) and “Mingus” (1979).

Representatives for the singer-songwriter, her record labels and Spotify did not respond or comment Thursday and Friday when asked about the apparent return of Mitchell’s albums.

In January 2022, Mitchell said with a post on her website titled “I Stand With Neil Young!” that she would delete all her music from Spotify. Young had done so after criticizing the service for its support of Joe Rogan, the podcast star whose show had come under fire from doctors and public health officials who said some of Rogan’s guests were promoting misinformation about Covid vaccines.

“Irresponsible people spread lies that cost people their lives,” Mitchell wrote.

Young returned his music to Spotify last week, saying: “My decision comes as the music services Apple and Amazon have started offering the same disinformation podcast features that I opposed at Spotify.” Rogan previously had an exclusive deal with Spotify, which has since been extended – for a reported $250 million – to allow distribution of his show on other platforms.

Mitchell, 80, has become more active in recent years after suffering an aneurysm in 2015 that initially left her unable to speak. She has made several appearances, including at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival and the Grammy Awards in February, and will play two “Joni Jam” shows at the Hollywood Bowl in October with Brandi Carlile and others.

Hoping to give her children a head start when they grow up, Samantha has Simon, Jonah and Asher, nine, eight and six respectively, pay “sham bills.”

Each week the children are given an allowance of $6 (£4.76), of which $1 (79p) is expected to go towards their expenses, a further $1 for groceries and a final $1 for utilities.

The children receive their money by doing chores during the week and can keep track of everything through workbooks that their mother has created.

The insurance representative of HollandMichigan, USA said: “Once a week we sit down with the boys to check our financial records, take out their workbooks and wallets and then talk about a financial literacy.

“We charge our kids rent for a few reasons. I want them to have self-control when it comes to their money and to be able to control their spending.

After years of trying to get her financial life in order, Samantha is steadfast in trying to ensure that her children are better prepared for adulthood than she is.

The 30-year-old realizes her kids are still young, so she makes sure they know they’re saving for a treat and makes it as fun as possible.

The workbook created for them is divided into six sections: earning, saving, spending, giving, investing and spending.

She uploaded a video on TikTok she showed off her parenting technique and it was viewed more than seven million times, with many parents taking the advice and doing similar things.

However, not everyone was so positive about their feedback.

Some parents have taken the comments, and sometimes her private messages, to heart to let her know that what she is doing is wrong and that she should just let her kids be kids.

One TikTok user said: “Just let kids be kids!”

While a second added: “They are way too you to do stuff like this, just leave them alone!”

Samantha did joke that her children won’t be evicted if they don’t pay rent for a month.

The negative feedback hasn’t stopped her from helping families around the world.

She said: ‘My husband and I found ourselves seriously in debt and not in good financial health.

We charge our kids rent for a few reasons. I want them to have self-control when it comes to their money and to be able to manage their expenses

“It took us years to get our financial lives in order and get ourselves out of the hole we were in.

“Because of this experience, I really wanted to make sure my kids could avoid this as much as possible.

“Once a week we sit down with the boys to have our money date.

“Then we take out their workbooks and wallets, discuss a financial skill for the week and hand out their pocket money.

“They receive this for doing chores during the week, and then budget it depending on the goals they are working on.

“So many parents have told me they’re going to try it with their kids, or that they wish their own parents would teach them similar things.

“A lot of people really don’t like it and want to let my children be children. It’s been a heated debate in the comments of my videos for weeks.

“It was great to see so many parents investing in their children’s finances future.”

A WELLNESS coach has revealed the two anti-aging foods she swears by.

She revealed her anti-aging advice for glowing skin, backed by science.

Valerie (@valerieribon) shared the skincare tip in a TikTok video.

More than just keeping up a good skincare routine, she explained that a nutrient-dense diet was also crucial.

She started eating two foods that turned back time as she got older.

“These are weird things I do to look good when I’m old,” she said.

“If you want to be warm when you’re old, you should have oranges because they contain naringenin.”

Naringenin, a flavanone, is commonly found in citrus fruits and has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and protective properties.

Studies have shown that flavanone protects cells against skin aging caused by UVB rays and oxidative stress.

Along with oranges, naringenin is found in high concentrations in grapefruits, sour cherries, tomatoes and Greek oregano.

Most read in Hair & Beauty

“Naringenin blocks the enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid in the body,” Valerie added.

To plump the skin from within, Valerie also deliberately ate foods with high concentrations of hyaluronic acid.

From banana peels to ear massages: five natural anti-aging hacks revealed

“Bone broth is the food with the highest levels of hyaluronic acid,” she said.

Hyaluronic acid, a natural fluid found in the eyes and joints, acts as a lubricant for tissues and joints.

When used on the skin, the liquid helps make the skin flexible, increasing its elasticity.

Hyaluronic acid is often used in cosmetics to stretch the skin and help prevent wrinkles and fine lines.

Anti-aging tips

  • Keep your skin hydrated internally by drinking water and externally with a moisturizer.
  • Always use sunscreen, even if you are not in direct sunlight.
  • Use vitamin C to brighten the skin and don’t forget to apply it to your neck.

Other foods rich in hyaluronic acid include root vegetables, such as turnips, carrots, potatoes and onions.

Leafy greens, such as broccoli, avocado, kiwi, beans and okra, are also hyaluronic acid-friendly.

Valerie added that while any form of bone broth will do for its anti-aging benefits, one was superior.

“Preferably grass-fed,” she said.

One commenter shared helpful foods for vegetarians who couldn’t eat animal byproducts.

“Eat lots of tofu and tempeh! Snow mold and bamboo extract help with collagen production and skin elasticity and do not involve animal cruelty,” they said.

A young Australian man says the ‘saddest part’ of being Australian is that Aussies don’t support others when they try something new.

Leo, from Melbourne, claimed in a video that Australians find it “cringeworthy” when they experiment with new things, such as creating TikTok videos, podcasts or new business ventures.

This idea, called “Tall Poppy Syndrome,” is the “perceived tendency to disparage or discredit those who have achieved notable wealth or prominence in public life.”

In a now viral TikTok videoLeo said: ‘The saddest thing about Australia is the fact that whoever tries it ‘cringes’.

“If you don’t agree with me, check out the comments section of literally every Australian creator.”

Leo, from Melbourne, claimed Australians don’t support others when they try something new and find it ‘cringe’. For example, if they make TikTok videos, start a podcast or try dropshipping

Leo claimed that “every Australian” he has met who has become successful has experienced “the exact same thing”.

“They start out, their friends think they’re super weird, eventually they leave or isolate themselves and become successful,” he said.

“No one has ever really supported them.

“Then when they meet an Australian who’s already successful, there’s a weird bond because you’ve all done the exact same thing – which basically means you had to ignore a bunch of bulls*** on the way to success.”

Instead of judging, Leo encouraged others to support those who are starting or trying something new, no matter what it is.

“Maybe next time you see your friend trying something out, just support him. Go like their ‘cringe’ TikToks they make, go like the things they make, or buy their dropshipping product they start up,” he continued.

“I think a culture change would benefit everyone.”

The video has since been viewed more than 610,000 times, with some notable Australian content creators and business owners joining the conversation.

‘Tall poppy syndrome. I think a big part of Australian culture is about people not being too big for their boots,” one person commented.

“I think it’s definitely changing, I’m 24 and from Melbourne’s west, our group of guys, we’ll all be happy for each other when they start to gain traction and become successful,” said another.

Luke Moore, who has well over half a million TikTok followers, joined the conversation and said, “I can vouch for this.”

Another person added: ‘This is why I keep everything to myself, tall poppy syndrome is bad.’

YouTuber turned business owner Brittany Saunders agreed, saying she too was the “cringe kid” in high school.

‘Who is laughing now?’ She added.

Flintoff was seriously injured in a car crash at the Top Gear test track in December 2022 while filming the now-canceled car show.

But after recovering from the ‘life-changing’ injuries he suffered, the 46-year-old is back to work for the BBC.

Flintoff appears to be filming the second season of his hit show “Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams,” in which he tries to get kids involved in cricket.

The star posed for a photo with young cricketer Subhajit Naskar at the Cricket Association of Bengal. In the second season, his show focused on cricket in India.

While other pictures showed the retired England all-rounder being presented with a jersey of Indian Premier League team Kolkata Knight Riders by Bengal cricket president Snehasish Ganguly.

The second season of Flintoff’s show comes after he… MEGA a seven-figure deal with the BBC last year.

A TV insider told The Sun that the star’s return to the screen is a hugely positive step after the harrowing crash.

They said: “This will be a huge comfort to his fans as it shows he is making a good recovery and returning to two of his greatest passions: sport and television.

Horror crash by Freddie Flintoff

FORMER England cricket captain Freddie, 46, was rushed to hospital after the 120mph crash at the Top Gear test track in December 2022.

He was injured in an accident at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey.

Freddie suffered several broken ribs and serious facial injuries that left scars on his face.

Filming for the show, which Flintoff co-hosts with Paddy McGuinness and motoring journalist Chris Harris, has been halted since the horror crash.

Following the crash, the BBC announced at the time that continuing filming would be “inappropriate”, adding that a health and safety review would take place.

It was not his first accident, having previously lost control of a motorized tricycle at 120mph in a race against co-hosts Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness.

Freddie had to wait 45 minutes for an air ambulance.

But judging by the most recent photos, his scars have healed extremely well.

‘Obviously there are some scars, which everyone expected, but Freddie seems to have made huge progress since he last played cricket in public.

“He clearly feels comfortable enough to be in front of the camera again, which was not the case this time last year.

Top Gear’s Paddy McGuinness gives health update on Freddie Flintoff after horror crash as he discusses future of BBC show

“These are nervous first steps because he is recovering both mentally and physically, but the TV program he is making is a real passion project for him.”

The first season of Flintoff’s show saw him return to his hometown of Preston to get young people involved in the game that made him an international superstar.

And fans are eagerly awaiting the second season of the series, which will now take Flintoff to cricket-mad India.

The FA Cup match was shown live on ITV, and as the stars began to gather in the tunnel, one of the player escorts was seen breaking his heart.

Fernandes, 29, quickly spotted the sobbing child and tried to comfort him as they prepared to walk onto the field in front of a raucous crowd.

Seconds later it was time for action, but as the teams entered the Theater of Dreams, Fernandes went the extra mile to care for the overwhelmed child.

He had taken the boy in his arms and then carried him outside, while the boy held on tightly with an arm around the ex-Sporting Lisbon CEO’s neck.

Viewers were quick to notice Fernandes’ act of kindness, and even fans of other clubs couldn’t help but praise the usually polarizing player.

A rival supporter started the love-in, posting on X: “I can’t stand him but fair play to @B_Fernandes8 with that little mascot.”

Another said: “Awh bless bruno with the little kid mascot.”

A third wrote: “the little guy in the front stood there sobbing next to the upset mascot, bless him.”

Along with a heart emoji, another post read: “Bruno comforting and carrying his concerned mascot.”

A fifth read: “Bruno’s little mascot is so cute.”

While a sixth wrote: “Bruno runs the scared mascot. The biggest game of the season and he’s the captain. F*** the haters.”

Another added: “Bruno Fernandes makes me like him because he’s so nice with that little overpowered mascot.”

And an eighth wrote: “I’m not a fan of Bruno Fernandes but I have to give him credit for looking after the young Utd mascot who was clearly nervous/upset.”

Former United captain Roy Keane worked for ITV as a pundit, and he couldn’t resist a cheeky joke after watching the first scene of the boy crying in the tunnel.

Host Mark Pougatch said: “There’s a lot of pressure on a lot of different people here this afternoon and this poor little mascot is a little overwhelmed at the moment, he has a soothing word.

“I think we need Uncle Roy to go see him.”

That led to the ever-dry Irishman replying: “I think he’s worried about the game, the mascot.”

Zac Young‘s boozy twist on a classic red velvet cake is the perfect treat to get Us in the St. Patrick’s Day atmosphere.

The Food Network star, 41, exclusively shared the recipe for his delicious Guinness Green Velvet cake in the latest issue of We weekly.

“The cake has just a hint of cocoa and allows the malty, hoppy flavor of the Guinness to shine through, especially when paired with the whiskey-enriched salted caramel glaze,” says Young. Us of the dessert.

The recipe is not only festive and fun, but also versatile. “Try it as a loaf, a single-layer round, or even cupcakes!” Young adds. The recipe enhances the flavors and appearance of a typical red velvet cake by adding Guinness’s famous stout and a dash of green food coloring. Not to mention, the frosting also contains a bit of Irish whiskey and is covered in green and gold sprinkles.

Children in the Gaza Strip are facing severe and rapidly increasing food shortages, and an alarming number are suffering from the most life-threatening form of malnutrition, United Nations experts said Friday in their most dire assessment yet of the evolving crisis.

About one in 20 children in shelters and health centers in northern Gaza experience “severe wasting,” the most critical sign of malnutrition, defined as dangerously thin for their height, according to UNICEF, the U.N. agency for children. The findings were based on screenings conducted by the agency and issued on Friday.

Among children under the age of two, acute malnutrition, meaning the body is deprived of essential nutrients, has become quite common in Gaza, the screenings showed, with the most severe prevalence in northern Gaza. In some areas, it emerged that the number of cases of acute malnutrition had doubled since the last record in January.

Even in Rafah, the densely populated area in southern Gaza with the greatest access to food, 10 percent of children under the age of 2 are acutely malnourished and 4 percent are severely wasted.

Before the war, UNICEF said, the rate of acute malnutrition among young children was less than 1 percent, and severe wasting was extremely rare.

Lucia Elmi, UNICEF’s Special Representative in the Palestinian Territories, who returned from Gaza last week, said she was particularly alarmed by not only the number of children suffering from malnutrition, but also the speed at which their health was deteriorating. Young children cannot be adequately fed with just water, flour and bread, she said.

“They need protein, they need vitamins, they need fresh produce and they need micronutrients, and all of this is completely missing,” Ms. Elmi said in an interview last week. “That’s why the decline has been so rapid, so fast and on this scale.”

Children are bearing the extreme costs of the war in Gaza, both physically and mentally, children’s rights groups and experts reiterate. According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, more than 12,000 children have been killed in the conflict and 27 children in northern Gaza have died from malnutrition or dehydration.

Palestinian parents say their daily struggle, besides the threat of bombings, is finding enough food for their children. Many have said they choose to give what little they have to their children rather than to themselves.

United Nations Population Fund representative for Palestine Dominic Allen, who just returned from a trip to Gaza, said Friday that conditions there were worse than he could “describe or show in pictures or imagine.” . He said at a news conference in Jerusalem that everyone he saw or spoke to was “thin, emaciated and hungry.”

“The situation is beyond catastrophic,” he said.

Israel has said it will not limit the amount of aid entering Gaza through border crossings and recently indicated as much support for new initiatives to get aid into Gaza via land, air and sea. Humanitarian groups have criticized Israel, saying its insistence on checking every truckload of aid – and rejecting some – is a major cause of the food shortage.

The CEO of Save the Children, an aid organization in the United States, Janti Soeripto, said the crisis is currently by far the worst in the world for children.

“Every time I talk about Gaza, I think to myself that it couldn’t get any worse,” she said in an interview. “And every week I’m proven wrong.”

Without a ceasefire, it has been difficult for teams to provide safe and comprehensive assistance to the Palestinians.

Rachael Cummings, director of humanitarian public health for Save the Children in the United Kingdom, said from Rafah that the lack of sanitation – including dirty or salty water and sewage on the streets – was exacerbating the hunger crisis there.

“If a child doesn’t eat enough food or the right composition of food — they have poor water, poor sanitation — they’re going to get very sick very quickly,” she said.
