  • Residents say the man was holding a large knife

A normally quiet residential street has been thrown into chaos after a man allegedly started attacking innocent people with a machete.

Residents said the man started his rampage on Marion Street in Leichhardt, in Sydney’s inner west, about 10.35am on Saturday.

They said the man tried to attack another man with the machete on the street.

“The (passerby) man fell to the ground, but managed to escape unharmed,” the witness said news.com.au.

“Then another person was walking down the street with a backpack and he tried to cut at them and the man who was holding his backpack in front of him to protect himself.”

The man was eventually ‘arrested’ by police officers.

NSW Police said a man had been arrested following a police operation in Leichhardt.

Officers rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a man threatening people with a machete before running into a building.

“A perimeter was established and – with the assistance of specialist resources – an operation was launched to locate the man,” police said.

“The man was arrested without incident at around 12.30pm and taken to Newtown Police Station where he is assisting police with inquiries.”

The man was checked at the scene by ambulance personnel.

The investigation into the incident continues.

Buses were diverted for up to an hour when Marion Street was closed between Cromwell Street and Elswick Street.
