SRINAGAR: A joint team of security forces shot a terrorist during a anti-terror operation in the Rampora area of Sopore in north Kashmir Baramulla District Saturday evening. Till the time of going to press, the area was being searched to root out trapped terrorists, believed to be two to three in number.
This was the second gunfight in Sopore sub-division in less than 24 hours and took place a day after the killing of two terrorists in Sagipora area on Friday. This was also the fourth encounter in North Kashmir in five days. Earlier this week, similar operations were carried out in Bandipora and Kupwara districts in which a terrorist was killed each. No fewer than eight terrorists have been shot dead since the beginning of this month.
While official sources said the terrorist killed in Rampora was a Pakistani, a top police officer said the identity would be known after the operation was completed.
Earlier on Saturday, a joint team of Army, CRPF and J&K Police launched a cordon-and-search operation in Rampora based on intelligence information about the presence of terrorists there. As security forces approached the suspected hideout, trapped terrorists rained bullets on the search party, triggering a gun battle.
