Tetris Forever brings 15 Tetris games to Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation and PC

Tetris already held the Guinness World Record for the most ported computer game in history, with 200 variations across 70 platforms. And that number just got bigger with the announcement of Tetris Forever for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

You won’t have to wait long to get back to obsessively organizing blocks like you used to: the game is scheduled for release in 2024, but no specific date has been announced yet.

Tetris Forever features “more than 15 playable classic games from the series’ history,” according to the publisher Digital solar eclipsethat specializes in restorations and reissues. These include the 1988 Famicom version of Tetris, along with Super Bombliss, Super Tetris 2: Bombliss, Super Tetris 3, and Tetris Battle Gaiden. Digital Eclipse says the game will also include a faithful recreation of the 1984 Soviet-era classic Electronika 60.

In addition to the classics, a new Tetris variant is also coming with Tetris Forever. It’s called Tetris Time Warp, a game mode that “warps” players through different eras of Tetris history. As they warp, they experience the different graphic styles from those eras, along with the unique gameplay mechanics of those older games.

Tetris Forever won’t just feature Tetris games. Digital Eclipse will also feature over 90 minutes of documentary footage exploring the creative collaboration between Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov and Henk Rogers, founder of The Tetris Company. According to Digital Eclipse, the two will talk about the history of Tetris and their roles in it.

The announcement was part of Nintendo’s September 2024 Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase and Indie World Showcase, which was streamed live on YouTube on August 27. Other game announcements included the Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, and more than a dozen other titles.

Nintendo Switch owners get even more Tetris

The game will be released on multiple platforms, but Nintendo Switch owners can look forward to a little something extra. In addition to Tetris Forever, the Switch will also be getting the original NES version of Tetris, which will be available this winter via Nintendo Switch Online. The NES version of the game is best known as the version used in competitive Tetris play.

There are also plans for another Tetris 99 Grand Prix Event for Nintendo Switch owners, also scheduled for this winter. It’s a last-player-standing event where 99 players play Tetris simultaneously and continue until only one remains.
