‘That’s ‘super weird,’ people say as mother plans to name twins after famous lovers
A PREGNANT woman has raised eyebrows after revealing the names of her twin babies.
Choosing names for twins that match can be tricky, but she caused a stir with the names she came up with.
One of her friends went to Reddit to give their opinion on the names in question, which referred to two very famous fictional lovers.
They wrote: “(Not really a post I’m worried about) my girlfriend is planning to name her twins Romeo and Juliet.
“I like both names on their own and think they go well together, but I also worry that people will find the names strange, since everyone knows them as the star-crossed lovers.
“She didn’t seem to think it was strange until I brought it up and I’m afraid I’m being paranoid over nothing.
“She says she will change it if other people find it weird (that’s why I’m posting this), but she doesn’t know what she’s going to change.”
The person added that her stepbrother’s twins are named Cassandra and Apollo.
The friend added: “I think [it] is even stranger when you consider that Cassandra didn’t even love Apollo and was cursed for rejecting him.”
They asked Reddit users for their opinion, saying, “Is it weird to name siblings after famous lovers?”
People quickly agreed that the mother should not choose this name.
Someone wrote: “Personally, I would never use twin names (or even sibling names) of famous/famous romantic couples.
“I think it’s strange.”
Another added: “It’s super weird.”
And a third noted: “Especially because Romeo and Juliet is such a classic that everyone knows. It’s not an association you can avoid.”
Meanwhile, someone said: “If she wants something inspired by Shakespeare but without the uncomfortable implications, there’s always Sebastian and Viola, the real-life twins from Epiphany.”
Meanwhile, a pregnant woman likely felt disappointed when her favorite baby names were met with disapproval.
She shared a list of unique name options with voters.
Reddit user Today’s Secret Word shared the parents’ situation in a post.
“My girl name list is in between (I’m 9 months pregnant) and I need help choosing something unique,” the mom wrote.
“If you don’t like my choices, just keep it to yourself!”
Her selection of options includes Umbrella (pronounced Um-bri-ella), Berghandi (Burgundian but with Gandhi’s name), Poakly (a combination of poison ivy and periwinkle), Periwinkle, and Xaxbella.
Are Unique Baby Names Worth It?
You may think that a unique name will make you stand out, but is it really?
Josie Griffiths, deputy editor of Fabulous, talks about the problems she had with her name as a child.
As a child, I wanted nothing more than a personalized keychain with my name on it.
But it wasn’t. The closest I could get were Rosie, Joseph (not so nice for such a little girl) and Joanne.
Josie is short for Josephine, a French first name, and I’ve been in my twenties without ever meeting anyone with the same first name.
When I try to introduce myself to people I get called all sorts of random names like Tracey and Stacey and it can be quite annoying.
Although I’ve met a few Josies in the past year (there are a few around my age), it’s still a much rarer name than most of my friends’ names.
Overall I don’t mind it, at least it’s not crude or spelled weird.
And that means I can get away with ‘doing a Cheryl’ and just calling myself Josie.
I’m getting married this year and some friends are shocked that I’m changing my last name. It’s not considered cool or feminist these days. I explain to them that I’m not that attached to Griffiths because I always just say ‘Hi, I’m Josie’ when I call a friend.
I like being unique and I will definitely try to achieve this when naming my own children.
You have to watch out for the crude names, so after nine years as a lifestyle journalist I will definitely avoid them.
