The 10 tips to create the perfect Christmas house, from ordinary to timeless
WE all love a B&M or home bargain to pick up some new Christmas items.
But interior designers have emphasized that this holiday season is all about timeless decorations.
So forget plastic reindeer and disposable decoration and embrace elegance, sustainability and thoughtful details.
Here, three interior design experts share their tips for creating a chic and welcoming Christmas home.
Embrace natural elements
Lynette Pymm, founder of Black by designsaid: “Natural materials such as pine cones, eucalyptus and berries give a sophisticated, rustic look to the Christmas decoration.
“Spread them in bowls or make a simple, fresh garland for a grounded, elegant look.”
Layered lighting for atmosphere
Nicole Hussey, creative manager at comfortablesaid: “Soft lighting is the key to that cozy winter feeling.
“Integrate warm white Christmas lights and candlelit lanterns for a soft glow that enhances the festive atmosphere without overwhelming the room.”
Vintage and reclaimed ornaments
Tracey Haag, founder of Where saints gosaid: “Using vintage ornaments or embellishments made from reclaimed materials is a great way to add character.
“These pieces are unique, often beautifully crafted, and they bring a sense of history and nostalgia that is perfect for Christmas.”
Choose a statement color palette
Lynette added: “Color is everything. Instead of sticking to red and green, try a sophisticated palette—think deep forest green with gold, or midnight blue paired with silver.
“It keeps the look fresh and stylish, with a nod to the season.”
Sustainable packing stations
Nicole added: “Set up a wrapping station with eco-friendly paper, ribbons and string.
“It keeps everything organized and provides a nice look if you use brown kraft paper or recycled fabric.
“Add a sprig of pine for a simple, festive touch.”
Use structured throws and pillows
Tracey added: “Layering textures adds warmth to a space. Choose soft throws made of faux fur or wool and cushions made of rich, wintery fabrics.
“Not only is this cozy, but it adds visual interest that doesn’t feel too seasonal.”
Handmade centrepieces
Lynette said: “Christmas is a great time to experiment with handmade decorations.
“Try a centerpiece made from candles, small glass vases, and greenery from your garden.
“It’s easy, sustainable and a great way to make table decorations festive without traditional gimmicks.”
Go big for green
Nicole said: “Use greenery that goes beyond just the tree. Garlands, wreaths and small evergreens in pots around the house are timeless and add a fresh, vibrant feel that isn’t too overtly ‘holiday’.”
Personalized place settings
Tracey adds, “A simple way to make holiday meals feel special is to personalize each setting.
“Use handwritten place cards or small decorations that your guests can take home.
“It’s a thoughtful touch that doesn’t require mass-produced decorations.”
Bring in hot metals
Lynette added: “Accents in brass, copper or gold make any space feel festive and luxurious.
“You can add them through candlesticks, frames or mirrors, just enough to reflect light and warmth around the room.”
