Without the warmth of the summer sun and summer breeze, clothes can remain damp and musty, making drying them a frustrating and time-consuming process.

And now that winter is approaching and we are deep into autumn, many people are having difficulty with this.

An additional problem here may be that clothing starts to develop a musty smell.

One mother even started working on it online forum Mumsnet to express her difficulties in drying her clothes.

The anonymous woman wrote: “Is it possible to get the musty smell out of clothes?!

“This is because it takes too long to dry in the airy place in winter and now certain items have retained the damp smell even after being washed several times, line dried in the wind etc.

“Any tips or tricks for this or general no-dryer laundry tips would be greatly appreciated.”

And one person suggested: “Try the detergent in the fabric softener slot.

“Wash with bio powder.”

One person suggested spinning clothes on a high setting and then hanging them on a door frame or near a window.

“Heat rises from radiators and heaters,” they noted.

Another tip was to avoid putting clothes directly on the radiators as this makes them work harder and can increase your energy bills.

Instead, use the surrounding heat to dry your laundry more efficiently.

How to dry wet laundry indoors, in winter

Drying rack or drying rack

Fill your drying rack with wet laundry and place it near a heat source (such as a radiator or direct sunlight) to distribute the air around your clothes.

Dehumidifier

Connect a dehumidifier in a room where clothes are hanging so that they dry quickly and prevent moisture and mold. Many now have a laundry setting.

Tumble dryer

A tumble dryer can heat moisture from wet laundry, which saves time and can be used in all weather conditions.

Heated airer

Many brands and stores now sell heated airers for as little as £30. The racks are heated by electricity and can speed up drying time.

Open a window

Choose a spare room or unused room to keep your laundry and open a window but close the door behind you.

Use curtain poles

Hang wet laundry on radiators and then hook them on curtain rods with the radiators underneath. The heat will rise and dry the items. Alternatively, if you have a shower curtain rod, you can hang your clothes in the bathroom with a window open.
