The AAP alliance could have helped Congress in Haryana, but only to increase its tally by three – Times of India

The AAP alliance could have helped the Congress in Haryana, but only to increase its tally by three
The decision not to enter into an alliance with AAP cost a lot Congress victory in the Haryana Assembly elections? Not really, if we just look at the arithmetic. There were only three seats out of 53 that Congress did not win, in which AAP got more votes than the margin for the eventual winner.
So even if we were to assume that an alliance between the Congress and the AAP would have collected all the votes that the Congress and the AAP got on their own, the alliance would have won at best three more seats, taking the total to 40 against the 37 the alliance had won. Congress actually won.
Of the three seats, only one was actually won by the BJP. That was Assandh in Karnal district, where the BJP got 54,761 votes, beating the Congress tally of 52,455 by 2,306 votes. The AAP candidate got 4,290 votes here.
The other two chairs were the only ones that did that INLD won in Dabwali state and Rania in Sirsa district.
In Dabwali, INLD got 56,074 votes and Congress 55,464, meaning INLD won by 610 votes. The AAP candidate got 6,606 votes. In Rania, INLD got 43,914 and Congress 39,723, but lost by 4,191 votes. AAP got 4,697 votes.
Assuming a seamless transfer of votes between the Congress and the AAP, these three seats could have been won through an alliance between the two. That would have meant 47 seats for the BJP, 40 for the Congress-AAP alliance and none for INLD, which would not have changed the outcome, although the gap would have narrowed.
Of course, alliances are not just about arithmetic, but whether an alliance between the two parties would have created excitement among AAP and Congress is a moot question.
