Every month, Netflix adds movies and TV shows to its library. Here are our picks for some of the most promising new titles of July. (Please note: Streaming services sometimes change their schedules without notice. Sign up for our for more recommendations on what to stream.) View newsletter here.)
‘Lost’ Seasons 1-6
Start streaming: July 1st
This wildly entertaining and often surprising sci-fi epic returns to Netflix, just in time for the 20th anniversary of its debut episode. What begins as a story about a seemingly random group of airliners who crash-land on an uncharted island grows over the course of six seasons into a multi-century saga, as the castaways stumble across the mysteries and history of their strange and dangerous new home. An innovative flashback structure balances island adventure with smaller stories about these people’s lives before they crash-landed. “Lost” works both as a rich, character-driven drama and an addictive puzzle game, littered with clues and curiosities. It’ll be interesting to see whether a new generation of fans becomes as obsessed with it as early 2000s TV audiences were—and whether they’ll quarrel with the show’s ending as much.
‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’
Start streaming: 3 July
This long-awaited sequel, coming 30 years after “Beverly Hills Cop III,” sees Eddie Murphy return to one of his most memorable roles: Axel Foley, the smart, quick-witted Detroit cop who somehow keeps finding himself back in Los Angeles to solve crimes. In “Axel F,” the old-school action hero shows up to help his estranged daughter Jane (Taylour Paige), a lawyer whose life may be in danger. While teaming up with Jane’s ex-boyfriend, Detective Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Foley reunites with a host of old friends, including Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), John Taggart (John Ashton), Jeffrey Friedman (Paul Reiser) and Serge (Bronson Pinchot). The film is being promoted as a full-on ’80s throwback, with big stunts and R-rated jokes.
‘Cobra Kai’ Season 6, Part 1
Start streaming: July 18
The sequel to the “The Karate Kid” film franchise is coming to an end with a three-part season that begins with five episodes in July. “Cobra Kai” began as a simple spin on the 1984 original, with jerky villain Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) becoming more of an underdog and hero Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) becoming someone out of touch with his humble roots. As the series has progressed, these characters — and their children, who also compete in martial arts tournaments — have evolved in ways that make their motivations and relationships more complex. The story has expanded to encompass more parts of the “Karate Kid” mythology, but it remains a surprisingly sensitive look at how people overcome the family histories and socioeconomic circumstances that initially shaped them.
‘Skywalkers: A Love Story’
Start streaming: July 19
Acrophobes should probably avoid this head-scratching documentary about a pair of famous Russian “roof-toppers” who climb as high as they can on sky-high buildings and then take photos to document the feat. Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus fell in love while pursuing their passion for extreme climbing. When their relationship began to falter, they tried to rekindle their romance by plotting to break into the upper floors of the world’s second-tallest skyscraper, in Kuala Lumpur. Because Nikolau and Beerkus documented and shared so much of their adventures on social media, “Skywalkers” director Jeff Zimbalist and co-director Maria Bukhonina have plenty of footage to work with. They tell a story that’s part about a risky act of criminal trespassing and part about a couple who must learn to trust each other to survive their big stunt.
‘The Decameron’ Season 1
Start streaming: July 25
Loosely based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s influential 14th-century collection of short stories, “The Decameron” is set in Florence during the Black Death and follows an eclectic group of aristocrats and their servants as they seek refuge from the plague in a country villa. Created by Kathleen Jordan (best known for the tongue-in-cheek satire “Teenage Bounty Hunters”), the miniseries features a cast of signature comedic actors, including Zosia Mamet (“Girls”), Tanya Reynolds (“Sex Education”), Saoirse-Monica Jackson (“Derry Girls”) and Tony Hale (“Arrested Development”). Rather than the sprawling anthology format of the book, this version chronicles the misadventures of the houseguests as days of isolation and fear lead to a breakdown of social and sexual inhibitions.
