While the Victoria Sponge is one of the most iconic British baked goods, a quarter (25 percent) of Brits said the creamy texture and versatile flavours of the American cheesecake were their favourite.

Other unconventional baked goods that made it into the top 30 include doughnuts, banoffee pie and cinnamon rolls, as adults increasingly opt for sweet treats found overseas instead of classic cakes.

And while 60 percent say they prefer traditional cakes, modern baked goods like pistachio croissants and chocolate Oreo cake also make the list.

The research was commissioned by local convenience store chain SPAR to celebrate the Blooming Great Tea Party with Marie Curie, an end-of-life charity that encourages people to bake their favourite cakes and hold a tea party to raise money.

Ian Taylor, spokesman for the retailer, which is donating money on selected items sold in-store to support the cause, said: “The results show just how diverse our cake preferences are.

“From a rich chocolate cake to the classic lemon tart, there’s a cake for every taste and occasion.

“With cheesecake now the UK’s most popular teatime treat, it’s clear that people are looking for baked goods that evoke flavours inspired by dishes from around the world.

“The popularity of traditional cakes is no surprise, as we are a country that loves classic baked goods. However, cakes come in all shapes and sizes, so it can be hard to pick a favourite.

“We love seeing how baking can bring people together and encourage kindness. Hosting a tea party is a great way to unite the community, showcase their baking skills and support good causes.”

The generational differences in our favorites are also clearly visible: 15 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds more often choose a red velvet cake, compared to 28 percent of those aged 55 and over, who prefer a coffee cake.

And it seems that older people are no longer the best bakers in the country: almost half (49 percent) of 18- to 34-year-olds say they like to bake at home. That’s 23 percent more than people aged 55 and over.

Generation Z is also the generation that bakes most often (15 percent), an average of almost three times a month, while 30 percent of people aged 65 and over never bake at all.

Television shows such as The Great British Bake Off (20 percent) and Mary Berry’s Absolute Favourites (10 percent) are inspiring people to bake more, including the younger generation.

However, almost half (47 percent) believe their grandparents are better bakers than they are, while 17 percent believe they are better than their parents.

Impressively, 41 percent can bake a cake without following a recipe, and a quarter (25 percent) can bake without paying attention to the quantities. Among 18- to 24-year-olds, this figure rises to 42 percent.

Research has shown that 41 percent of all adults bake just for fun, while 35 percent do it for special occasions such as birthdays or family gatherings (27 percent).

Another 72 percent think it is important to enjoy a piece of cake and a cup of tea with friends and family. 44 percent think that baking a cake shows that you care about someone.

And of those who participated in the study by OnePoll.com33 percent have baked cakes for charity, while 74 percent agreed that taking a moment to enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake helps when you’re feeling stressed or anxious.

Suzy Pelta, an experienced cake baker and winner of the Lorraine’s Cake Club Competition, who created a recipe for a lemon and honey cake in honour of the Blooming Great Tea Party, added: “Baking is a great way to show your love to your friends and family.

“I love that baking gives you the opportunity to be creative, make something delicious and make others happy, all with a few simple ingredients.”
