One of the things I miss in the 1980s, except my childhood, my waist and my belief in humanity, is the Boombox. The Boombox is one of the most important pieces of audio technology ever made: it has taken music from the bedroom or living room and on the street, soundtracking rap -fighting and breakdancing and changing pop culture for the better.
And now it’s back! Back! BACK!
The new we are rewind GB-001 looks like a tree box. It plays tires like a tree box. And it absorbs those tires like a tree box. But it also comes with a number of very welcome improvements compared to the devices from the 80s where it is so clearly inspired.
We are rewinding GB-001 Boombox: important functions and prices
The big differences this time are batteries and Bluetooth. The first means that your Boombox will not have the habit of the battery that I remember from my Lang-Goone Sanyo: the rechargeable and user replaceable 3000 mAh battery is good for 10 hours on speakers and 15 with headphones.
Secondly, there is Bluetooth 5.4, so that you can stream from your smartphone if you prefer not to bring a bag full of audio tapes with you. You can also connect an external sound source via the 3.5 mm connection or use an external microphone for recording.
It is much louder than my tree box once was: 104W Power thanks to class D reinforcement.
The spec includes dynamic power control to reduce distortion, Dolby B emulation for those noise-reduced cassettes and support for both normal (type I) and Chrome (type II) tires. And at 6.81 kg (slightly less than 15 pounds) it is not so heavy that you don’t want to take it anywhere.
The new Boombox is being unveiled today, May 15, on the high-end Munich 2025 Hi-Fi Show-We are planning to detect it there as quickly as possible. There is no confirmed release date yet, but the official price is very reasonable for £ 379 / € 449 (around $ 505 / AU $ 781).
