The Disturbing First Trailer for The Last of Us Season 2 is Here, and I’m Not Ready to Get My Heart Broken Again
The last of us The first trailer for Season 2 has been released online – and, judging by the footage it contains, I’m confident it will be just as emotionally devastating as its video game counterpart.
The two-minute teaser, which was released yesterday (September 26) as part of the 2024 The Last of Us Day celebration, is packed with unsettling, atmospheric and drama-filled moments. It also gives us our first official look at the new characters, including those featured in The Last of Us Part IIthe multi-award winning Naughty Dog game this season is based on – which will appear in Season 2, as well as scenes taken straight from the post-apocalyptic action video game.
Not only did HBO release the first trailer for Season 2 on The Last of Us Day, aka the day in the games when the Cordyceps virus destroyed civilization as we know it. In a press release, the Warner Bros. studio confirmed. Discovery also said the critically acclaimed Max show would debut on its primary streaming platform sometime in 2025. This is the first time HBO has revealed when one of the top Max shows will arrive. returns, although HBO chief Casey Bloys suggested it will air in the “first half” of 2025 when questioned about Season 2’s launch in mid-September.
This year’s festivities wrapped up with the reveal of a plot brief for Season 2. Indeed, as part of the same press blast, HBO provided some insight into where The last of us The next chapter of the TV show begins after the final episode of the first season. “After five years of peace following the events of the first season,” it reads, “Joel and Ellie’s collective past catches up with them, bringing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the world that they left behind. .”
The last of usThe second season doesn’t have a release date in the UK or Australia yet, and we don’t know where it will be available to watch. But with the hit series launching on Sky and Now TV in the UK, plus Binge in Australia, I’d be very surprised if season 2 doesn’t release on these services around the time it debuts on Max and HBO in the US.
Who are the new characters we see in The Last of Us Season 2 teaser?
Aside from Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna and Rutina Wesley – who will next reprise their roles of Joel, Ellie, Tommy and Maria from season 1 – every character we see in the first season 2 teaser will be new to anyone who hasn’t yet played the second game in Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed video game series.
So who’s who inside The last of us first images of season 2? The biggest revelation is Abby’s, The Last of Us Part II‘s deuteragonist and the person responsible for it That soul crushing moment in the aforementioned game. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil what happens for anyone who hasn’t played the franchise’s latest title yet. What I’m saying is that for anyone who has, or anyone who has been told about it, it will be absolutely heartbreaking. to see it come to life in HBO’s live-action adaptation. Anyway, HBO confirmed that No one will save you‘s Kaitlyn Dever was cast as Abby in January.

Next on the newcomers front, Dina – Ellie’s love interest, and an integral part of the story, in The Last of Us Part II – is featured in a number of notable trailer scenes, including one adapted directly from the game. Dina is played by Mrs. Web And Alien: Romulus star Isabela Merced, whose casting was also announced early this year.
Another prominent supporting character in The Last of Us Part II and the TV retelling is Jesse, one of Ellie’s best friends and a patrol leader for the settlement of Jackson, Wyoming where Ellie, Joel and many others live. Jesse will be played by Netflix Beef star Young Mazino.
As for the rest of Season 2’s supporting cast, many of whom will be familiar to anyone who played Naughty Dog’s most recent title, Jeffrey Wright (The Batman) plays Isaac, Tati Gabrielle (Kaleidoscope) will Nora, Spencer Lord (Riverdale) has been hired as Owen, Danny Ramirez (Top Gun: Maverick) is on board as Manny, and Ariela Barer (Atypical) joined the cast as Mel.
Finally, Catherine O’Hara will guest star in the series’ second season as a yet-to-be-named character. She can be seen talking to Joel at several points in the teaser and it is O’Hara’s unnamed person who eventually asks him “what have you done?”, which harkens back to events in The last of us season 1 finale. At first glance, it appears that O’Hara is the Jackson settlement’s therapist, perhaps trying to help Joel overcome his guilt and gain the courage to tell Ellie the truth about what happened in the season’s finale 1 happened. Alternatively, O’Hara’s character could be one of the town’s new leaders – after all, five years have passed since the end of Season 1 – who Joel confides in. I guess we’ll have to wait until season 2 arrives to find out for sure.
