The Dunelm hack that will keep ‘draughty old houses’ warm this winter
As temperatures drop in Britain but energy bills rise, Britons are looking for ways to stay warm without spending a lot of money.
From investing in electric blankets to purchasing dehumidifiers or only turning on the heating at certain times, there seems to be a hack for everything.
But there’s a Dunelm hack that uses no electricity at all and keeps the house warm, especially in ‘draughty old houses’.
Share on the Dunelm TikTok pageone homeowner revealed in a video how she pulled off the heating trick.
She explained that homeowners will need to invest in a tie rod, which costs £4 from the home improvement store.
The woman explained it was a “viral tie-bar hack.”

She shows how to do that in a video, saying, “If you have a drafty door like me, go take that pull rod out of the coop, add a thermal door curtain and you’ll thank me later.”
She then explained that she now does this at every door in her house.
The trick is done by taking the tie rod and weaving a thermal door curtain on it.
These can cost between £20 and £35 at Dunelm.
She then places the tension rod near her front door and ensures that it is completely covered by the curtain.
This technique works by trapping air between the fabric and the door, creating a thermal barrier that insulates your home.
The curtains are made of multiple layers of fabric that contain offensive materials.
These also help with sound insulation.
This “wallet-friendly” heating hack was praised by many homeowners who rushed to the video’s comments section to share their thoughts.
One wrote: “My mom did this when I was a kid.” Another commented: “I have to do this, I’m losing so much heat.”

5 Money-saving tips for autumn/winter
1. Make your home draught-free
It takes time and money to heat your home, so it’s important that you do everything you can to keep the heat in. Close your doors and windows and fill any gaps with weatherstripping.
2. Turn down your thermostat
According to Energy UK, lowering the thermostat by just one degree Celsius can reduce your heating costs by up to 10% and save you around £85 a year. And if you don’t have a thermostat, installing one can save you up to $70 per year!
3. Move furniture
Ensure that large, bulky furniture such as sofas does not block the radiators.
4. Wash clothes at a lower temperature and add extra spin cycle
Unless it is bedding, towels or very dirty items, turn the temperature down to 20 or 30 degrees and rotate the machine twice to remove excess water.
5. Heat the person, not the house
There is no point in heating up a room with no one in it, so pay close attention to which radiators are on.
