This is what we know.

There is a “pretty good literature” that suggests that these three new color additives – Galdieria extract blue, butterfly wake -up flower extract and calcium phosphate are called – especially in the small quantities used to paint food, said Jamie K. Alan, a university university.

Calcium phosphate, which exists naturally in milk, has been used a lot in the United States for decades, in products such as calcium supplements, packaged sandwiches and reinforced plant milk and fruit juices, said Alireza Abbaspourrad, a associate professor of food chemistry and ingredient technology at Cornell. Now it can be used as a white color for ready-made chicken products, donus sugar and certain sweets.

Research shows no safety problems with calcium phosphate used to color food, said Katherine Thompson-Witrick, a university lecturer in food science at the University of Florida. Because calcium phosphate adds calcium to foods, some adults with kidney stones may want to limit their consumption of products that contain it, said Monica Giusti, a professor of food science at Ohio State University that has studied natural dyes.

Butterfly PEA Extract, which is derived from the dried petals of the Butterfly PEA Plant, is also approved to be used in the United States to change some juices, candies, alcoholic beverages and other products, since 2021 the butterfly wade has been added in parts of Asia for colors and there are no safety problems with the extracts with the extract.

The additive can now be used in more foods, such as breakfast cereals and snacks, including regular potato, corn and tortilla chips and pretzels.
