The first tri-fold phone is almost here – and it’s already been spotted in the wild
As our list of the best foldable phones will tell you, there are more foldable phones to choose from than ever before. However, we still don’t have a tri-foldable phone on the market – and it’s looking increasingly likely that’s about to change.
If Gadgetschina reports, Richard Yu, the former CEO of Huawei, has been spotted carrying what appears to be a tri-fold handset on a plane. Well-known tipster Digital chat station has said that this is indeed the device we are looking at.
A tri-fold phone is a foldable phone with an extra fold and even more screen space. Think of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, but with an extra panel on the side, so you’re essentially looking at three standard phone screens stuck together.
Of course, that adds to the bulk when the phone is folded, since you’re dealing with an extra layer. For some users, though, that could be a worthwhile trade-off: the main display would be about 10 inches, corner to corner.
Incoming Phones
Just a few days ago, we heard that Huawei had managed to meet certain durability standards with its tri-fold phone. The fact that the company’s former CEO is using one confirms the rumors of an imminent launch.
The tri-foldable is thought to debut from September. September is also the month we expect to see the new iPhone 16 series make its debut, while the Pixel 9 phones are set to be unveiled next Tuesday.
Samsung is the brand most people think of when it comes to foldable phones, despite continued competition from OnePlus and Motorola. There have been rumors of a tri-foldable coming from Samsung, but it’s not here yet.
If Huawei does indeed manage to be first to market with this particular model, it seems likely that the device will run HarmonyOS Next, a desktop-style operating system designed to take full advantage of the 10-inch screen real estate.
