Mayor Ras J. Baraka of Newark was arrested on Friday outside of a detention center in the city that used the federal government as part of its campaign to deport immigrants without papers.
Alina Habba, a lawyer for President Trump he called as Interim -Mamerican lawyer of New Jersey, announced the arrest in a post on social media.
After his arrest, Mr Baraka, 55, was taken to an immigration and customs enforcement facility in Newark, said his assistants.
Mr Baraka “committed a violation and ignored several warnings of research into domestic security to remove himself from the ice detention center,” wrote Mrs. Habba. “He willingly chose to ignore the law. That will not be in this state. He has been taken in custody. Nobody is above the law.”

Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, described the episode as a “bizarre political stunt” in a post on social media. She said that Mrs. Watson Coleman and Mr. Mendez, together with ‘several demonstrators’, ‘had locked up in a security hut’.
“This illegal break and entering a detention facility endangers the safety of our law enforcement agents and the prisoners,” said Mrs. McLaughlin. “Members of the congress are not above the law and cannot be illegal instead of detention facilities. If these members had asked for a tour, we would have facilitated a tour of the facility.”
