The most unusual tricks Brits use to make gardens bloom – including the use of BONES
Some of the most unusual tricks people use to make their gardens flourish include using bones as fertilizer, destroying fungus with cinnamon, and singing to their plants.
A survey of 2,000 adults found that gardeners often use strange strategies to help their plants grow, including throwing used tea bags on the ground.
Other examples of gardening tricks include making beer traps for slugs, using fireplace ash as fertilizer, and watering plants with potato water.
The average gardener spends three hours a week tending to their outdoor space. Television shows, social media and gaming are among the biggest sources of inspiration.
Sabrina Carmona, Vice President of Farm Heroes Saga King, the mobile game developer behind the farm-inspired match-3 puzzle game, said: “The research has revealed some weird and wonderful ways that people are tending to their gardens.
“It was interesting to discover some of these things and understand why gardening has become such a popular pastime.
“But for those who don’t have access to outdoor space, or perhaps don’t have time to garden, you can still get your nurturing effect from a mobile game.
“Hopefully you get the same sense of fun, escapism, and reward from tending virtual crops as you would from real ones.”
The research shows that 66 percent of people who garden do so because they are happy with the results.
47 percent say it provides them with a place to escape, and 45 percent enjoy the nurturing aspect.
More than four in ten (42 percent) enjoy watering plants, 31 percent enjoy mowing the lawn and 35 percent enjoy harvesting their own fruit and vegetables.
Tomatoes, strawberries and potatoes were the three most popular products to grow, with 27 percent wanting to save money.
Common goals for gardening include improving mental well-being (47 percent), helping the environment (40 percent) and learning new skills (25 percent).
However, 49 percent want to spend more time in green spaces than they do now.
The survey found that 95 percent agree that it is important to make time for the things you enjoy, with lack of time cited as the main reason why 54 percent do not garden as much as they would like.
The research, conducted via OnePoll.comit also turned out that 54 percent would rather go to a garden center than a nightclub.
And 72 percent believe it’s an activity that all ages can enjoy – and not just seniors.
Sabrina Carmona adds: “Gardening is a versatile and rewarding hobby that can be adapted to your lifestyle and space, and can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities.
“This inclusivity is something that has been demonstrated in the research and is also a fundamental element of our game development.
“Whatever your background, age or circumstances, it is incredibly important to find moments of fun and enjoyment in our busy schedules.
“Gardening – whether physically or virtually via a puzzle game – can provide countless benefits. It can provide much-needed moments of escape, a sense of accomplishment or help you learn a new skill.”
