Race legend Derek ‘Tommo’ Thompson has ever confirmed the date of his last shift -after a 66-1 winner with his wife.
The man who is forever famous for the side-splitting ‘It is actually a man, Derek’ Clip will put his microphone on Wolverhampton on July 22 for the last time.
Tommo, whose many fans will undoubtedly miss his photo! Photo!’ Calls, started to comment at the age of 15.
Now, after having written history as the youngest caller of the Grand National in 1973, he believes that the time is right to walk away at the age of 74.
He thinks he is the oldest sports commentator in the world.
The Guinness World Records may have something to say about that, because last year they mentioned the 86-year-old Turkish caller Orhan Ayhan as the oldest.
Anyway, it was a great stint for fan favorite Tommo.
A natural behind the microphone with a flair for the dramatic, Thompson tried his hand like a jockey and King Charles Memorable denied his only victory like Jockey – in a charity race in Plumpton in 1980.
But he had to find his true calling in the stand instead of on horseback.
He made his debut on the microphone as a new teenager who called point-to-point meetings.
The king of one carriage was quickly arrested by the BBC, where he was part of their national coverage before he went to ITV and then channel 4.
There he was a popular figure in their formidable line-up with the will of the late John McCririck and Alastary Down – A menstrual punters often mentions the Golden Age of Racing.
In later years he became known to many as the archetypal Alan Partridge figure, partly thanks to Teen curling lines in promotional videos, including the notorious: “Is it going well? I thought that was you!”
Fortunately, Tommo will not turn his back all the way.
The comment icon, who announced his retirement at the end of last yearWill keep the game in the game with some horses.
And among them is 66-1 Redcar winner Cheerleader, the first to wear his colors in around 40 years.
The three-year-old Merrieveeulen Tommo owns with wife Caroline flew home in a 5F competition under Joanna Mason.
She had not received much among former trainer Karl Burke, but showed bundles of improvement for Tina Jackson.
A radiant Tommo could not stand still after the victory and said: “Tina, who is my brother’s partner, is currently one of the most popular trainers in the UK.
“It’s my wife Caroline, she will look at this, she bought the horse, gave it off for six months, gave it to Tina, brought her softly … Tears will flow over her face.
“Well done, honey.”
Well done, indeed – and for you, Tommo, for an unforgettable career in racing.
