But there’s one drink that’s taken the internet by storm: bone broth.

In conversation with ladies HealthDietitian Sonya Angelone, RD and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, said bone broth is made by stewing the meat and bones of an animal (usually chicken or beef) in water for a long time.

Doing this breaks down the cartilage in the bones and connective tissue of the meat into collagen protein, which remains in the broth even after you remove the vegetables and meat. says Angelone.

It’s thought the drink, which is packed with collagen and other nutrients, can make your skin glow and help with aging.

The collagen protein in bone broth helps keep your skin elastic and hydrated, among other things.

Collagen can be difficult to find in food sources, making bone broth a great way to support skin health.

As we get older, collagen becomes increasingly important to add to our diet.

Our bodies naturally produce collagen, but once we reach our mid-20s the process slows down.

By age 60 – 80% of our natural collagen is lost.

You need bone-in meat, chicken takes the least time to cook (about six hours), while beef and lamb take eight to 24 hours.

Once you’ve removed the meat from the bone, you’ll want to roast the bones to bring out their flavor, along with any vegetables you like.

When you’re done, put everything in a pot and cover it with water.

“You can also add a little vinegar to dissolve the cartilage and release the nutrients,” says Angelone.

What is collagen?

  • It plays an important role in maintaining the elasticity and hydration of the skin
  • As we age, collagen production decreases, leading to wrinkles, sagging skin and reduced skin firmness

It’s important to note that while collagen-based skin care products can provide benefits, their effectiveness can vary greatly.

Some experts suggest that topical application of collagen may have limited effectiveness compared to other skin care ingredients that stimulate collagen production in the skin.

Once cooked for the recommended time, strain the meat and vegetables and you have liquid gold bone broth.

You can use the bone broth for soups, stews and all kinds of dinners.

Alternatively, you can enjoy it as tea or coffee whenever you feel like a warming drink.
