The only lesson I’ve learned from life: Gok Wan MBE, 47, says it’s okay to stay on your own path

  • Presenter Gok Wan MBE, 47, says he is better at fashion expert role
  • He feels much more comfortable with a cake machine or needle and thread
  • He says that the older he is, the better he has been able to identify his strengths

Gok Wan MBE, 47, is a food expert on TV’s This Morning, and has fronted other shows such as How To Look Good Naked and Gok’s Fashion Fix. The presenter lives in London with his bulldog Dolly.

I’ve been featured on This Morning for two decades and even acted as a substitute host for Holly [Willoughby] and Philo [Schofield].

I enjoyed it, but I don’t know if I was good. Some people are sincere presenters, and then there are others like me, who are better in an expert role, talking about food or fashion.

It’s fair to say that I always feel much more comfortable with a pie machine or needle and thread in my hand, so I think it’s best to stay in your own job.

And while TV is super exciting and gives me a huge adrenaline rush, it’s a really tough gig, and I believe there are others out there who do it much better than I do. Another thing I’ve discovered with live television is that you can’t have a downday. It is likely that there is something going on in our personal lives that could make us disappear from the screen.

But that can’t happen when you’re presenting live TV, so it’s a huge responsibility, and one that always makes me a little nervous.

That’s why I have tremendous admiration for the broadcasters who do it every day, because they leave their world behind once they’re on the air, and that’s not easy.

Plus, I think naming your strengths is one of the things I learned as I got older. I get a lot more enthusiasm from teaching people, so whether that’s advising women on what to wear or showing viewers how to cook a bad Asian dish – I’m here.

Through my career I have met some very famous faces and even made friends with some.

I count [comedian] Alan Carr as a good friend, and I will never forget to walk into his living room and see [singer] Adele is there. I knew she and Alan were friends, but I had no idea the Grammy winner would be at his house.

I loved how sober she was and that her last meal would be a Big Mac. That’s my kind of girl!
