The reason why Nine newsreader was forced to abort her news bulletin about a devastating car crash on the Gold Coast

A Channel Nine newsreader was forced to leave her program midway through Friday morning.

Presenter Jayne Azzopardi was doing a news broadcast today about a devastating car crash on Queensland’s Gold Coast when her voice started to falter.

At one point, the 44-year-old presenter appeared to be vomiting as she began her story.

After a brief coughing fit, Azzopardi appeared to recover and continued.

She later explained that the interruption was due to a scratchy throat.

“Excuse me,” Azzopardi said as he apologized to viewers.

She continued: “I don’t know what’s happening to my voice this morning.”

The newsreader, who replaced Brooke Boney on Nine’s morning program last month, then took a sip of water to clear her throat.

The accident happened as Azzopardi reported that the 37-year-old man involved in the car crash on the Gold Coast fortunately escaped unscathed after crashing his truck into a fence and overturning.

Last month, Channel Nine confirmed that Azzopardi, who co-presents Weekend Today with Clint Stanaway, would replace Brooke Boney as the weekday newsreader for Today later this year.

Azzopardi joined Nine in 2009 as a political journalist in Canberra and moved to the Sydney newsroom in 2011.

She was previously a newsreader for Weekend Today and was appointed presenter in April 2023.

Meanwhile, Australian entertainment reporter Renee Bargh will join Today on a “more regular” basis, alongside veteran Richard Wilkins.

Bargh worked as a weekend presenter for Today Extra and also co-hosted The Voice Australia in 2020, alongside Darren McMullen.

Boney burst into tears when she announced in March that she would be leaving today and moving abroad to pursue a Masters in Public Policy at the prestigious University of Oxford.

“I have some really big news for you this morning. I’ve been offered a place at Oxford University later this year, which means I’ll be leaving the show after the Olympics,” Boney said on radio at the time.

‘I don’t want to go into too much detail now as there’s still plenty of time for goodbyes and thank yous, but I wanted to tell you all the good/bad news from this morning.’

She admitted that the decision to give up her role on the show was “very difficult”.

“It was always my dream to study at a foreign university, and this just felt like the right time to take that step,” she explains.

“I’m so grateful to come here every day and I love you all so much. So it’s made the decision really hard. But it just means that you all have to plan a trip to the UK to come and visit me.”

Boney first joined the Today Show in 2019 as an entertainment reporter, replacing Richard Wilkins, the longtime editor who moved to Today Extra.

Last year, Boney was promoted to newsreader, succeeding Alex Cullen, who focused exclusively on sports.
