The Samsung Galaxy S25 series may support seamless software updates

The Samsung Galaxy S25 series is confirmed to be launched in the first half of 2025. Now a tipster suggests that Samsung’s alleged flagship smartphone range will feature support for Android’s A/B over-the-air (OTA) update system via two separate partitions that will make the process of downloading and installing software updates seamless. This system allows the user to continue using the device even when the update is being installed, without any downtime.

A/B system updates on the Samsung Galaxy S25 series

In one after on X (formerly Twitter), tipster @chunvn8888 suggested that the alleged Samsung Galaxy S25 series will support A/B system updates. It is speculated that this will work via two separate partitions on the system storage. When the update is activated, its installation will begin on the inactive ‘B’ partition, while the smartphone’s system will continue to run on the ‘A’ partition.

This allows the user to continue using their device during the process and the only downtime that occurs is when it reboots to the updated disk partition. If the OTA update fails or the device encounters an error, it will restart on the old partition or operating system so that it can still be used, reducing the chance of it entering an inactive state, which is usually is called ‘bricking’. ‘. Users then have the choice to try installing the software update again.

According to For Android, another benefit of the A/B system is the elimination of the need for sufficient system storage to download the updates. Instead, they are streamed to the device. The only downside is that the device will take longer to boot on the new partition after the latest software is installed.

This update system was first rolled out to devices running Chrome OS and has since been introduced to the Google Pixel series. The Samsung Galaxy S25 series could be the company’s first offering to support A/B system updates, if the tipster’s claims turn out to be true.
