The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the real winner of the Paris Olympics – here’s why
It’s hard to believe, but the 2024 Paris Olympics close on August 11, while the Paralympic Games end on September 8. After the medal events, Olympians and Paralympians will return home… and they’ll all have new phones.
As with previous Olympic Games, Samsung is a sponsor and has given each Olympic and Paralympic athlete a special edition of its latest foldable flip phone. The aptly named Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition comes with a special edition Flip leather case. It’s also a very limited edition, with only around 17,000 being made.
Chances are you’ve seen an unboxing of it on social media, especially if you’re on Olympic TikTok. If you’ve been following the games, there’s one thing, besides the sheer talent of each athlete, that every bronze, silver, or gold winner has in common. A victory selfie with a small, square yellow phone: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition looks a lot like the one you and I can buy, and you can read our extensive Z Flip 6 review. It’s the same shade of yellow available to everyone else, with some custom graphics on the back – namely the Olympic and Paralympic logos, with a note that Samsung is an official sponsor.
Inside the device, you’ll find the same Samsung OneUI on top of Android, and a slew of pre-installed apps that would come in handy in the Olympic Village. There’s also a custom splash screen featuring Samsung’s note to Paralympians and Olympians. The case itself sports a custom wallpaper on the front, offering a nice pop of color and some protection amid the mix of plastic and leather. You can check out our unboxing of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition below.
Apart from that, it’s the same Galaxy Z Flip 6, with a 3.4-inch cover display and 6.7-inch main display, both of which are AMOLED for a vibrant viewing experience. As for the cameras, the dual lenses on the front will come in handy for taking a selfie with an Olympic medal or just taking photos on a regular day. The 50-megapixel wide and 12-megapixel ultrawide lenses both use the cover display as a convenient viewfinder.
Above are some promotional photos of athletes using the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Olympic Edition on stage to take a selfie on one of the biggest stages in the world. If you’re interested in checking out or owning the Olympic Edition of this foldable phone and aren’t an Olympian or Paralympian, a few have surfaced on resale sites like eBay.
As I write this, I see a handful of them on eBay – some brand new in box and others lightly used – for as little as $1,500 (USD), but many with bids at a higher price. Here you can view the search results for the phone; some even call up the supplied e-sim with data to get started.
Of course, if you want to take a victory selfie of your own, you can pick up a standard Galaxy Z Flip 6, which has many of the same features but without the Paralympic or Olympic logos and without the limited-edition case. Over at Samsung, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 starts at $1,099 , but as always, there are various promotions and discounts available.
