The scenic route: heading for the Goodwood Revival in a Morgan is just the kind of nostalgia you need
I picked up the red Morgan Plus Four from the dealer in Kensington, squeezed myself in with the help of some Swarfega, pressed the starter and it was gone with blocks!

With the hood stretched out in front of me, the wheels just behind my rear and the refined creaking of a modern BMW engine under the hood, it was the perfect set of wheels for the weekend. The destination: Goodwood Revival, where everything to do with cars and style from 1948-1966 (the track’s original era) is celebrated in the best possible taste. Dress up, stall, eat, dance and have a glass of bubbly as you watch cars of yesteryear screaming about the track at full throttle. The festivities begin on Friday and many stay on site or at a nearby hotel for the weekend.
I decided to drive there and back on Saturday and Sunday to fully enjoy the trip. On a clear morning I left London for two hours to pick up my plus one in Rye, East Sussex. Leather riding gloves on, roof down – I definitely got a lot of attention.
People really liked this car, or was it my outfit? Lots of happy faces wave and give me the thumbs up. At least I think it was their thumb. It’s also comfortable, thankfully, because we still had two hours of driving ahead of us.
It was at this point again with the roof up, so as not to ruin my passenger’s hair, or to let her borrowed vintage bunker hat end up in the hard shoulder.

We wound our way along picturesque winding roads, over the top of Brighton, then up Worthing and Goodwood. The Revival will celebrate 25 years next year and it has now become an essential part of the calendar for many. Even if cars aren’t your thing, I bet you can’t help but be captivated by the sight and roar of a 1960s Ferrari, Lotus or Jaguar speeding around the track.
After a great day I drove us home. It was a lot of driving – it felt like I was part of some kind of 24-hour Le Mans endurance test. The magic of it all had an effect on me.
The next morning it was early again behind the wheel, back to Goodwood via Surrey to pick up my 23 year old niece, who enjoys being involved in the vintage side of the event. She looked so trendy that she was chosen to enter the best dressed contest. I was unfortunately overlooked.
Another brilliant day ended with the emotional sight and sound of Spitfires overhead.

Goodwood Revival is the perfect place for all ages to celebrate the bygone era enjoyed by my parents, grandparents and maybe you too. This coupled with a Morgan simply confirmed this: Cool Britannia still reigns, OK.
