The Secret Dishwasher Button That Can Cut Your Water Bill By Nearly A Quarter
With the cost of living showing no signs of decreasing anytime soon, we are all looking for ways to save on our energy bills.
And according to one dishwasher expert, most appliances have a secret button that can reduce energy consumption by as much as 20 percent.
Gwilym Snook explains that by pressing the button, the amount of water used during the cycle can be reduced, which also reduces laundry costs.
“Did you know that you can save up to 20 percent energy with the energy saving function?” he asked.
“There is a common misconception that the ecocycle uses more energy because it takes longer to complete the cycle.
“Essentially, every eco mode ensures that the dishes are washed at a lower temperature and less water is used.

“This means that economic functions use on average 20 percent less energy and water compared to a standard function.”
The AO.com expert also tackled another misconception, namely that it is cheaper to wash dishes by hand than to put them in the dishwasher.
“According to the Energy Saving Trust, washing dishes by hand accounts for four percent of the average household’s water use, while dishwashers use only one percent,” he explains.
“This is because the dishes are washed while the tap is left open. This is a common mistake that is causing more and more households to lose money on their energy bills.
“If you use a dishwasher properly, it is more environmentally friendly and hygienic.
“When you use a dishwasher, you can be sure that the water is the right temperature and clean enough to thoroughly wash the dishes.
“This is something that is much more difficult to achieve with hand washing.
“In addition, multiple sinks are needed to keep the water clean enough for effective washing.”
However, there are a few tips and tricks you can follow to ensure you get the most out of your dishwasher.
How to save on your energy bill
SWITCHING ENERGY SUPPLIERS may seem like a hassle, but luckily it’s quite easy to change suppliers and save a lot of money.
Shop – If you have an SVT deal, you’re likely to be throwing away up to £250 a year. Use a comparison site such as MoneySuperMarket.com, uSwitch or EnergyHelpline.com to see what deals are available to you.
The cheapest deals are usually found online and are fixed deals. This means that you pay a fixed amount, usually for a period of 12 months.
Switch – Once you have found one, all you need to do is contact the new supplier.
It is useful to have the following information, which you can find on your invoice, at hand and to pass it on to your new supplier.
- Your postal code
- Name of your existing supplier
- Name of your existing contract and how much you payA current meter reading
Your current supplier will then be notified and the switch will be initiated.
It will take up to three weeks to complete the switch and your power supply will not be interrupted during that time.
And one of the most important factors in making your machine as effective as possible is the amount of water you put in it.
While washing a half load is a “complete waste” of energy and money, you should also be careful not to “overload” the machine.
“Make sure the water from the spray arms can reach all objects,” he concluded.
