The Secrets Behind Lana Del Rey’s ‘Insta Baddie’ Transformation
LANA DEL REY will be hitting the stages of Reading and Leeds festivals this weekend, and will undoubtedly deliver a stunning performance.
It’s been a busy year for the 39-year-old Video Games singer, who wowed fans around the world when she performed at California’s Coachella festival in April.
She looked stunning in a blue Dolce & Gabbana dress embellished with Swarovski crystals, which she paired with a glittering white cowboy hat. boots while showing off warm caramel tones in her hair.
It had all the hallmarks of a so-called ‘glow up’ and made her almost unrecognisable compared to the year before, when she took to the stage at Glastonbury with darker hair and a more structured outfit.
With all eyes on her again this weekend, how did Lana make her “insta baddie” – a woman who looks perfect – shine?
Tips from best friend Taylor Swift
Lana showed off a noticeably slimmer figure during her Coachella performance, leading many to believe she was using injections to lose weight.
The Summertime Sadness singer has yet to respond to the suggestion, but she did explain the reason behind her smaller frame.
In May, the star shared a post on Instagram showing herself wearing a Dogpound sweater.
Dogpound is a gym where Lana’s best friend Taylor Swift gets personal training.
The company appeared to confirm that Lana also uses Dogpound’s personal training services, posting “Fammm” on her post.
They then shared the post and wrote: “Guess who’s in the new summer outfit?”
Taylor enlisted the help of Dogpound to prepare for her massive Eras tour and has been training six days a week, up to two hours a day.
Slimming shots
Lana previously told Harper’s Bazaar that the secret to her “Insta baddie” look was drinking wheatgrass.
She said, “I drink so much wheatgrass, wear so much neon, go to so many spinning classes, it’s ridiculous.
“I live the secret life of an Instagram villain, quietly in LA”
Babydoll makeup trend
Lana used to wear a chunky, kohl-eyeliner look, but has switched to the babydoll makeup trend in recent appearances, which, according to Mia Lyndon, author of Fabulous, makes her look younger.
Mia explains: “Burnt skin, an over-lined cupid’s bow and OTT blush are all hallmarks of the babydoll makeup trend – and Lana has totally nailed it.
Four Ways to Give Yourself a Glowdown
Thick, fluffy lashes are out, as are fake tan and long nails… here’s how to get the ultimate glow-down in four steps…
The term “glow-down” refers to a woman removing her makeup from what was once the most popular beauty choice, for a more natural look.
Eyelash extensions – Thick, bold “Russian lashes” used to be all the rage, but today girls are opting for subtle, individual eyelash extensions to lengthen their existing lashes.
Nails – The long, plastic claws are gone, more and more women prefer BIAB or gel-manis.
Hair color – Remember when everyone wanted ice-cold white hair? Not anymore! Millions of women are trying to go back to their roots (literally) and add soft blondes and warm golds to their hair in an attempt to achieve the “old money blonde” look.
Makeup – Contouring your face shape is a thing of the past. Instead, women are adding freckles and sweeping blush across their cheekbones.
“Reminiscent of Disney princesses and Bratz dolls, this fully glam look, popularized by celebrities like Sabrina Carpenter, clashes with the once-dominant ‘clean girl’ aesthetic, but is now the winner.
“Overly accentuated eyes and lips are key to Lana’s Coachella look, giving off a soft, Bambi-esque vibe.
“I’m especially impressed with her eye makeup, where she combines a flattering copper eyeshadow with warm chocolate and illuminating champagne tones, and tapered lash extensions (which give that doe-eye look).
“It’s finished with white eyeliner on her lower waterline, an age-old trick to make eyes appear brighter and bigger.
“This is, of course, a world away from the unfinished, shabby chic look she’s sported in the past, which often featured grungy kohl eyeliner and oversized cat hairs. Instead, her new use of brighter, lighter eye makeup creates a softer, more youthful look.”
Mia adds that Lana’s new lighter hair gives her a more beautiful look.
She explains: “Speaking of change, Lana also dyed her hair and this new balayage look combines creamy blonde, copper and auburn highlights.
“Her parting and face-framing layers, styled in soft waves, take her look to the next level without it looking too tacky – I’m not having it.”
Advanced mode switch
Fabulous fashion editor Clemmie Fieldsend shares how Lana’s fashion sense has developed over the years.
She says: “Lana has gone from being an American bombshell to a vampire siren.
“Our first introduction to her was her music for Video Games.
“The white vest, the gold jewelry, the pale pink pan-stick style lipstick. It was all very stylized trailer trash.
“This style then evolved into lace dresses and floral crowns – think Coachella and Snapchat filters.
“Maybe she was taking notes from Taylor Swift’s stylebook, who also went through a ready-made babydoll phase.
“Luckily it didn’t last that long.
“She experimented with Priscilla Presley-esque hair and wore sixties dresses with appliqués and pastel shades, which didn’t really suit her sultry voice or attitude.
Since then, she has updated her style with a more sophisticated mix of corset dresses, dark and vampy makeup and matching dresses.
This was most evident when she wore one of Alexander McQueen’s runway looks for this year’s Met Gala: a drab cream tulle dress covered in embellishments that resembled thorny branches, with a single large branch perched on her head.
We can’t wait to see what Lana pulls out of her fashion bag this weekend.
