These Pixel 9 AI features may be coming to older models
The Google Pixel 9 series launched last month and arrived with several exclusive features powered by artificial intelligence (AI). However, a report now suggests that the Mountain View-based tech giant is planning to roll out some of the AI features to its older Pixel phones as well. Features such as Reimagine and Auto Frame are said to be in testing phases and could potentially be available on the Pixel 8 and earlier models via the Google Photos app.
Exclusive features of the Pixel 9 on older models
In a reportAndroid Authority, in collaboration with tipster AssembleDebug, discovered cod strings that reference the availability of Google Pixel 9 exclusive features on older Pixel models. The discovery was reportedly made following an APK teardown of the Google Photos for Android app version 6.99. Notably, the strings were found in the Google Photos app for the Pixel 9 series.
Two Magic Editor features — Auto Frame and Reimagine — are said to be testing for Pixel smartphones launching between 2021 and 2023. This includes devices from the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel 8 series.
Auto Frame can generate a better frame for a photo that’s already been captured, using AI. It’s said to improve image composition and even offer suggestions, such as a wider view. Meanwhile, the Reimagine feature uses generative AI to modify various elements in an image. Users can type in prompts to change the appearance of grass, skies, trees and other items to their own preference.
However, a similar version of the Google Photos app for non-Pixel Android phones makes no mention of the AI features, suggesting that these features, while introduced on older Pixel devices, will remain exclusive to the company’s smartphone lineup.
It’s important to note, however, that APK teardowns often contain references to various features that developers may be testing. Not all features will make it to the public release of the app. It’s unknown if and when these AI-exclusive features will roll out to older Pixel models.
