Ever desired that your digital advertising blocker could also work offline? This in development AR-Glass software could do that exactly, and it could be one of the first apps I download if I get a few.
Ar -glasses – be it from Bite” MetaGoogle and are Android XR partnersOr one of the other brands that strive for this field – look more and more as if they will be the next big thing in technology, but one fear I have heard of some is that they give our technology a new way to shoot advertisements for our faces.
We are bombed by inescapable banners and pop-ups a frustrating experience that sounds like prime material for one Futurama episode.
Fortunately, one AR software developer has made a tool that goes in the opposite direction by blocking advertisements where they appear.
🚫🕶️ I built an XR app for a real-world advertising blocker with snap @sectacles. It uses Gemini to detect and block advertisements in the area. It is still early and experimental, but it is exciting to imagine a future in which you control the physical content that you see. pic.twitter.com/yskfff6rxsJune 19, 2025
Stijn Spanhove Brought to social media to show off an “early and experimental” build of the app, but even in this early stage it already offers a number of impressive functions.
As you would expect, when you are switched on, the app can cover up large plate advertisements, cover them with a red blocker and a short description of what is underneath, such as “Bol. Billboard” – but it can also hide advertisements in newspapers and logos on skewers and grain boxes.
For now, however, the blocker is not perfect.
I would claim that the Big Red Blocker distracts more than an advertisement, and it may take a while to appear, although there is a great spatial consciousness, because the Blocker drives well in place while the AR glasses struck their heads.
That said, with AR glasses still away from their debut from consumers for some time, there is enough time that these nods are worked out.
As Spanhove emphasizes, AR -glasses will enable us to arrange the content that we see in both the digital and the virtual world, and although it is reasonable to worry about how this function can be abused, it is always nice to be reminded that many app -makers will be responsible with the Power AR deflating.
