This is when Apple could offer Gemini integration with Apple Intelligence
Gemini, Google’s native artificial intelligence (AI) model, reportedly won’t be integrated with the iPhone for a few more months. Earlier this year, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI, which will integrate the latter’s AI platform ChatGPT with the former’s AI suite, Apple Intelligence. This integrated AI experience will reportedly roll out to users in December. However, Gemini, which was also touted to be integrated into Apple Intelligence, would be delayed to give ChatGPT an exclusive window.
Gemini integration with the iPhone will reportedly happen in 2025
Writing in his weekly Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman say that the integration of Apple Intelligence with Google Gemini is not planned until 2025. The update comes after Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, commented on the matter in an interview at the company’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC 2024). The executive said the Cupertino-based tech giant could integrate its AI suite with other models such as Gemini.
While Federighi said integration with multiple AI models is possible, Gemini’s specific name drop sparked curiosity among enthusiasts. Now the Bloomberg report sheds further light on this development. Gurman claimed that Gemini won’t arrive on iOS until next year. However, it remains unclear whether this will happen in the first half of the year or close to the launch of the iPhone 17 series.
Gurman claims that Apple may want to give OpenAI a period of exclusivity before integrating another AI model. It is unknown whether this was a clause mentioned in the partnership agreement or if Apple agreed to this, as it is not paying the AI company for ChatGPT integration with Apple Intelligence.
Regarding future updates for Apple Intelligence, the journalist also says that the iOS 18.2 update, due in December, will finally bring Apple Intelligence to all compatible iPhone models. However, this global release will not include Europe or China.
The report claims that Cupertino-based tech giant Apple Intelligence could expand to countries under the European Union in April 2025, with expansion to China only likely after the release of iOS 19 in October.
