This is why Google tests verified check marks in search results
Alphabet’s Google is testing showing check marks next to certain companies in search results, a company spokesman said Friday, in an effort to help users identify verified sources and avoid fake websites.
Fraudulent websites pretending to be official companies or services can appear in online search results, presenting users with false information about the company, misleading users and potentially damaging the brand.
“We regularly experiment with features that help shoppers identify trustworthy businesses online, and we are currently running a small experiment with check marks next to certain businesses on Google,” the spokesperson said.
Google already uses automated systems to identify pages with ‘scam’ or fraudulent content and prevent them from appearing in search results.
The Verge reported the development earlier on Friday, adding that it was seeing blue verified check marks next to official sitelinks from companies like Microsoft, Meta and Apple in search results.
Only some users were able to see the feature, The Verge said, indicating that Google has not yet widely rolled out the test.
