Thousands of households will not receive deliveries until AFTER 6pm under new Royal Mail shake-up plans

  • Thousands of Brits won’t receive mail until after 6pm in a Royal Mail shake-up
  • Bosses want postmen to deliver rounds later in the day when people are home
  • Busy to ensure next day packages and items from online orders arrive on time
  • The Communications Workers Union (CWU) calls the plans ‘outrageous’

A proposed commotion at the Royal Mail could see millions of Britons waiting until after 6pm to receive their deliveries.

The pressure to ensure that next-day packages and items arrive on time is causing postal operators to reorganize the way deliveries are made.

Because most online orders are placed late at night, postal workers want postal workers to start rounds later in the day to maximize the chances of customers receiving their purchases the next day.

A projected map of the changes suggests more than 100 areas of the UK will receive mail after 5pm, including parts of London, Cornwall, Cumbria, Wales and Scotland. De Telegraaf reports.

But in 17 areas, including Abbey Wood in London, Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria and Truro in Cornwall, Brits can wait for their parcels after 6pm.

A proposed uproar at the Royal Mail could mean millions of Britons have to wait until after 5pm to receive their deliveries

A Royal Mail spokesman insisted that all letters be delivered ‘by 5pm’ at the latest, as opposed to the current 4pm cut-off time.

The proposals are likely to come up in negotiations with the Communications Workers’ Union, which has so far labeled them “outrageous.”

The CWU is already planning union action after an overwhelming majority of members voted for it, after arguing over wages and conditions.

A CWU spokesperson said: “The changes would allow our members to deliver up to five hours in the darkness of winter.

“This is just one example of how Royal Mail is overwhelming the UK postal service and why our members are voting for strike action to defend it.

“Postmen have and deserve the public’s support to win this battle.”

The Royal Mail says it has given workers a 2 percent pay rise from April 1 and is offering the CWU a 3.5 percent increase – conditioned on improvements in productivity and an overhaul of postal workers’ rosters.

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: ‘We are in talks with the Communication Workers’ Union about shifting tee times to meet growing customer demand for more next day parcel delivery and to reduce our impact on the environment by transport more mail by rail over time. .

“We have made it clear that these proposals are all subject to negotiation and detailed design, and that no plans have been finalized yet.

“More parcel companies are now delivering later in the evening to meet changing customer needs, and we are redesigning our network to handle the growing number of parcels, including investments in two new super hubs.

“As part of our ongoing planning and negotiation, we are investigating a number of changes that would mean we would still deliver letters before 5pm, as opposed to 4pm today.”
